The future looks and sounds amazing

The Pioneer VSX-1130 is your gateway to the latest A/V receiver technology in an affordable package. With Dolby Atmos surround sound and 4K video upscaling and pass-through, you'll be ready to make the most of upcoming content and experience a higher level of realism in your home entertainment than ever before. A host of wireless music streaming options puts near-infinite listening possibilities at your fingertips, while easy-to-use setup and control apps for your phone or tablet allow for intuitive navigation and operation of your home theater system.

Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it flies overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back as it roars directly above you. The VSX-1130 supports a 5.1.2 Atmos setup. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add a pair of in-ceiling speakers to your five-channel system, or pick up a pair of Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Connections you can put to good use

If you're waiting for more Atmos content before taking the plunge, there are other things you can do with the VSX-1130's height channels in the meantime. Use them to power a pair of rear surrounds in a traditional 7-channel system, bi-amp your main speakers for increased clarity, or reassign them to get stereo sound in a separate room. A second HDMI out means you can also send video to a second zone. Don't want the kids distracting you while you're catching up on your Netflix shows? Pop in a Blu-ray for them to watch in Zone 2 while you enjoy your favorite shows in the living room. Two subwoofer outputs with the option to use the second one in Zone 2 give you even further flexibility.

Get more music from more sources

The VSX-1130 connects to your home network for instant access to your entire digital music library. vTuner® makes thousands of global Internet radio stations instantly available, and a comprehensive array of wireless music streaming options including Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay means you'll never be at a loss for good music. If you have a Spotify® subscription, Spotify Connect gives you wireless access to the entire Spotify music library, complete with onscreen album art and music info, and you can play all of your favorite Pandora® stations, too.

High-quality audio and pinpoint surround sound accuracy

Typically only found in higher-end receiver models, the VSX-1130 boasts a built-in ESS SABRE digital-to-analog-converter that lets you get the most out of all your digital music, including compressed music files. There is also support for high-resolution playback of WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, and DSD files, along with multi-channel WAV and FLAC files. When it comes to home theater sound, Pioneer's MCACC Pro calibration system with full support for Dolby Atmos will take care of compensating for differences in speaker size, distance and level, taking into account your room's layout to give you spot-on audio performance with a minimal amount of effort. Just connect the included setup microphone to the receiver, and the rest of the process is automatic.

Easy interactive setup and control

Setting up the VSX-1130 is a straightforward process. Pioneer's Start-Up Navi app takes you through your initial network setup, and the receiver's built-in AVNavigator gives you a step-by-step walkthrough of all of the connections. You can fine-tune your settings using your computer, smartphone, or tablet. The Interactive Contents section of the AVNavigator lets you explore all of the receiver's features. Just push a button on the virtual remote, and AVNavigator will activate a given feature and tell you what it does. Once you're all set up, the iControlAV5 app for Apple and Android™ lets you use your device as a Wi-Fi remote to control your system.

Discrete Direct Energy Amplification: The Pioneer VSX-1130-K AV receiver is equipped with a discrete 7-channel amplifier rated at 100 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20Hz-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels). The Discrete Direct Energy Amplifier design creates a wide range frequency response that makes it ideal for reproducing new high resolution audio formats. With this proprietary amplifier design, Pioneer's engineers have found the key to managing the wide fluctuations in heat that can significantly alter the overall audio performance of each of the discrete amplified channels. By utilizing a new temperature compensation circuitry of the temperature fluctuations are effectively minimized between channels to maintain high quality audio from all connected devices. The Direct Energy amplifier also features a low impedance, high current, and compact circuit design to maximize performance in the critical output stages.

Amplifier Assignment: The VSX-1130-K's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup. Both the Surround Back and Front Wide/Top Middle speaker terminals can be connected at the same time. In this case sound will be automatically output from either the surround back or front wide/top middle speakers based on the type of surround format.

    • Surround Back (7.2ch): The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback.
    • Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers: 5.2.2ch.
    • Dolby Atmos (5.2.2ch): The receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Top Middle Left/Right and Surround Left/Right for Dolby Atmos 5.2.2ch playback.
    • Front Wide (7.2ch): The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Wide Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for more front effects from select surround sound formats.
    • Bi-Amp (5.2ch): Five speakers are powered in the main room (Front L/R, center, and Surround L/R) with the surround back amplifier channels reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.
    • Speaker B (5.2ch + 2ch): The VSX-1130-K's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Speaker B for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback of the same source in another room.
    • Zone2 (5.2ch + 2ch): In addition, the AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback of a different source in the second zone.

192kHz/24-bit ESS Sabre DACs + TI Aureus DSP Engine: The Pioneer VSX-1130-K receiver is equipped with 192kHz/24-bit ESS Sabre Premier digital-to-analog converters (DACs) to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with clearer sound. The VSX-1130-K AV receiver is equipped with a Texas Instruments (TI) Aureus Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Engine for better surround sound reproduction.

PQLS Jitter Reduction: PQLS (Precision Quartz Lock System) is a digital audio signal transfer control technology using the HDMI Control function. It offers  higher-quality audio playback by controlling audio signals from the receiver to a PQLS compatible Pioneer Blu-ray player. This enables removing jitter that has a negative effect on the quality of the sound and is generated upon transmission.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Pioneer VSX-1130-K AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Dolby Atmos: Dolby Atmos is one of the most significant home entertainment introductions since the launch of surround sound. Dolby Atmos adds height to the sonic landscape, creating a true 3D, multi-dimensional space that puts listeners inside the experience. Played through Atmos-enabled speakers like the new Elite Home Theater Speaker System or dedicated ceiling-mounted speakers (all sold separately), theatrical releases created in Dolby Atmos simply come alive. Dolby Atmos brings new life to traditional soundtracks, putting sounds into motion and delivering the full impact of the artist's work like never before. To enjoy Dolby Atmos, users must have Blu-ray Disc content encoded for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos-enabled receiver, and new Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, add-on modules, or at least two overhead speakers.

    • Ceiling Mounted Speakers: Ceiling speakers are used for maximizing effects in Dolby Atmos listening mode. Install these speakers midway between the position just above the listening position and the position just above the front speakers, or simply install them just above the listening position.
    • Dolby Enabled Speakers: There are two types of Dolby Enabled Speakers; one is to be placed on the top board of other
speakers such as front speakers and surround speakers; the other is integrated within the front or surround speakers. Dolby Enabled Speakers are designed with their output facing toward the ceiling to create an elevated audio effect in the Dolby Atmos mode by providing sounds echoing off the ceiling.
Note: Globally, more than 100 cinema blockbusters have been released featuring Dolby Atmos soundtracks in the past two years, and many more are on the way. Major Hollywood studios are partnering with Dolby to create home video versions of both current box office releases and previously released favorites for release starting in 2014.

Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your Dolby Digital (Plus/TrueHD) and DTS (ES/HD) movie soundtracks using your existing 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".

MCACC Pro Room Calibration: MCACC (Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration) is taken to a new level of performance with MCACC Pro. Designed by Pioneer for Atmos-enabled receivers and speaker systems, MCACC Pro calibrates sound output using a microphone to monitor the sound environment and an equalizer to optimize and precision-tune each speaker to the room. Pioneer engineers have even included dual independent subwoofer output tuning, each with individual EQ. Tailoring left- and right-channel low frequency response curves lets you achieve optimum subwoofer performance based on specific room placement, creating powerful bass response and seamless integration with your main speaker system. With the push of a button, it's like having a professional acoustical engineer fine-tune your home theater system.

    • Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration (MCACC): The VSX-1130-K features Pioneer's exclusive Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC), providing an optimized multi-channel listening experience by measuring every speaker's connection, noting its size and distance from the listening point, sound levels and timbre in order to calibrate, customize and maximize performance specifically for your room. An auto-calibration microphone is included.
      • 3 Correction Curves: After a single calibration is performed, each of the following three correction curves can be stored separately in the MCACC memory. SYMMETRY implements symmetric correction for each pair of left and right speakers to flatten the frequency-amplitude characteristics. ALL CH ADJ is a 'flat' setting where all the speakers are set individually so no special weighting is given to any one channel. FRONT ALIGN sets all speakers in accordance with the front speaker settings (no equalization is applied to the front left and right channels.
      • EQ Pro & S-Wave: In addition to measurements at the listening position, you can use two more reference points for which test tones will be analyzed for standing waves. This is useful if you want to get a balanced 'flat' calibration for several seating positions in your listening area. Place the microphone at the reference point indicated on-screen and note that the last microphone placement will be at your main listening position.
      • Discrete Subwoofer EQ: The dual discrete subwoofer EQ determines the distance and characteristics of both of your subwoofers, and makes adjustments using four different frequency parameters and an extremely low-latency DSP to reduce phase and timing errors that are often found in other room calibration systems.
      • Full Band Phase Control: The AV receiver's Full Band Phase Control feature uses phase correction measurements to make sure your system's sound arrives at the listening position in phase, preventing unwanted distortion and/or coloring of the sound. Full Band Phase Control technology takes into account each speaker's high-, mid-, and low-frequency ranges respectively. As a results, the AV receiver provides coherent sound reproduction through the use of phase matching for an optimal sound image at your listening position.
    • Manual MCACC Setup: You can use the settings in the Manual MCACC setup menu to make detailed adjustments, after the Auto MCACC Setup has completed.
      • Fine Channel Level: You can achieve better surround sound by properly adjusting the overall balance of your speaker system. You can adjust the Channel Level of each speaker in 0.5 dB increments (+/-12dB).
      • Precision Speaker Distance: For proper sound depth and separation with your system, it is necessary to add a slight bit of delay to some speakers so that all sounds will arrive at the listening position at the same time. You can adjust the distance of each speaker within a millimeter.
      • Standing Wave: Acoustic standing waves occur when, under certain conditions, sound waves from your speaker system resonate mutually with sound waves reflected off the walls in your listening area. This can have a negative effect on the overall sound, especially at certain lower frequencies. Depending on speaker placement, your listening position, and ultimately the shape of your room, it results in an overly resonant (boomy) sound. The Standing Wave Control uses filters to reduce the effect of overly resonant sounds in your listening area.
      • EQ Adjust: Acoustic Calibration Equalization is a kind of room equalizer for your speakers (excluding the subwoofer). It works by measuring the acoustic characteristics of your room and neutralizing the ambient characteristics that can color the original source material (providing a 'flat' equalization setting).
      • EQ Professional: This setup minimizes the unwanted effects of room reverberation by allowing you to calibrate your system based on the direct sound coming from the speakers. Performing the Acoustic Calibration EQ Professional procedure is effective when the lower frequencies seem overly reverberant in  your listening room.

Stream Direct Modes: You can use the receiver's two Direct Modes when you want to hear the truest possible reproduction of a source; all unnecessary signal processing is bypassed.

    • Direct: Sources are heard according to the settings made in the Manual Speaker Setup (speaker setting, channel level, speaker distance), as well as with dual mono settings. You will hear sources according to the number of channel in the signal.
    • Pure Direct: Analog and PCM sources are heard without any digital processing.

Advanced Surround Modes: The Advance Surround Modes create a variety of surround effects. You can choose from Action, Drama, Advanced Game, Sports, Classical, Rock/Pop, Front Stage Surround, Extended Stereo, or Headphone Surround.

    • Front Stage Surround: Allows you to create a virtual surround effect using only front speakers and a powered subwoofer.
    • Extended Stereo: Allows you to listen to multi-channel stereo through all 7.1 speakers.
    • Headphone Surround: When listening through headphones, you can still get a virtual surround sound effect.

Audio Enhancements: The Pioneer VSX-1130-K offers several audio enhancement settings to improve your listening experience.

    • Advanced Sound Retriever: Even compressed audio such as WMA, MP3, and AAC is enhanced with another Pioneer exclusive, Advanced Sound Retriever, by filling in areas where subtle details were left out during the compression process. When audio data is removed during the compression process, sound quality often suffers from an uneven sound image. The Sound Retriever feature employs new DSP technology that helps bring CD quality sound back to compressed 2-channel audio by restoring sound pressure and smoothing jagged artifacts left over after compression.
    • Hi-Bit 24: This feature creates a wider dynamic range with digital sources; like CDs, DVDs, or BDs. Smoother, more delicate musical expression can be achieved by converting 16-bit PCM or 20-bit compressed audio signals to 24-bit.
    • X-Curve: Most soundtracks mixed for cinema sound too bright when played back in large rooms. The X-Curve setting acts as a kind of re-equalization for home theater listening, and restores proper tonal balance of movie soundtracks.
    • Dialogue Enhancement: Localizes dialog in the center channel to make it stand out from other background sounds in a TV or movie soundtrack. By moving from UP1 through UP2 and UP3 up to UP4, you can make the sound source seem to relocate upwards.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II/x Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the soundfield forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Virtual Settings: Choose between 4 Virtual Speaker Modes - V.Height (when you're not using front height speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front height channel through your front speakers), V.Wide (when you're not using front wide speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual front wide channel through your front speakers), V.Depth (when this mode is selected, the soundfield expands virtually behind the display, resulting a soundfield with the same depth as the 3D picture to achieve a better sense of presence), or V.SB (when you're not using surround back speakers, selecting this mode allows you to hear a virtual surround back channel through your surround speaker)

Audio Level Controls: The Pioneer VSX-1130-K offers a variety of audio level controls to tailor your audio.

    • Auto Level Control: The Auto Level Control lets you hear high frequency sounds, dialog, and surround effects better at low listening volumes.
    • Input Volume Absorber: This feature can be used to correct for the differences in volume levels between input sources.
    • Dynamic Range Control: This function adjusts the level of dynamic range for movie soundtracks optimized for Dolby Digital/DTS formats. This feature is helpful when listening to Dolby Digital/DTS soundtracks at low volume levels.
    • Loudness: The Loudness function is used to get good bass and treble from music sources at low volumes.
    • LFE Attenuate: Dolby Digital and DTS audio sources can include ultra-low bass tones. Set the LFE Attenuator as necessary to prevent the ultra low bass tones from distorting the sound from the speakers. The LFE attenuator can be set to 0, -5, -10, -15, or -20 dB.

Audio Connections: Here is a lists of some of the audio connections that you'll find on the VSX-1130-K AV receiver.

    • Digital Inputs: The Pioneer receiver is equipped with one optical digital input and one coaxial digital input.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen Display (via HDMI): If your home theater system is enclosed in a cabinet, it's often difficult to know the status of certain functions, such as current volume level. With On Screen Display (OSD), your receiver's basic information, such as volume, input, and surround mode, will overlay on screen as you make adjustments with the remote, so you don't have to switch to a blank screen background. Meanwhile, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) lets you easily navigate Internet radio and iPod/iPhone contents. Both the OSD and GUI operate via HDMI. If your TV is connected to the composite video, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Zone 2: In addition to the main listening room, you can also enjoy audio/video playback from a different source in another room of your home using the receiver's Zone 2 function. The receiver's Zone 2 function offers speaker level outputs, as well as HDMI connectivity.

    • Speaker Level Outputs: By using the receiver's Zone 2 speaker-level outputs on the VSX-1130-K, you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.2ch surround sound in your main room and play a different 2ch audio source in the other room. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled from the receiver's front-panel control or included IR remote. Only AM/FM tuner, Network, Internet Radio, USB/iPod, Bluetooth, and analog input audio sources can be sent to Zone 2 in this setup.
    • HDMI Output: The Pioneer receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI output, so two different HDMI audio/video feeds can be sent to two different displays (Main Zone & Zone 2) at the same time directly from the receiver's HDMI inputs. HDMI Zone 2 will output up to 4K video and 2-channel audio for the HDMI input source (1-7) selected; when HDMI 3-6 inputs are select in the main zone, it is only possible to select the same input in Zone 2. You can also listen to Bluetooth, Internet Radio, Network Music, and USB/iPod sources in stereo through HDMI Zone 2. Volume will be controlled by your connected TV or receiver in Zone 2.
Note: When Internet Radio, Network, Bluetooth, or iPod/USB is selected in the Main Zone, it is only possible to select the same input as in the Main Zone for Zone 2. When listening to AM/FM radio, you cannot select different stations for the main room and Zone 2. Optical/coaxial digital audio sources and analog video sources are not output to Zone 2.

Gapless Playback: The Pioneer AV receiver offers Gapless Playback for AIFF, Apple Lossless, WAV, FLAC, AAC, and MP3 music files. The silent section between tracks are skipped when playing music files, eliminating the interruptions that usually occur when playing live or convert contents.

Sleep Timer + Auto Power Down: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set to 30, 60, or 90 minutes. The receiver will also automatically turn off the power when it has not been operated for 2, 4, or 6 hours.

ECO Mode: The new, energy-saving ECO Mode found on all 2014 Pioneer AV receivers goes far beyond the conventional wisdom about "green" electronics, with a standby power consumption of only 0.1 watt when enabled. Pioneer's ECO Mode offers all of the convenience features of today's modern AV receivers, including Network Standby and HDMI CEC support, while reducing power consumption in both on and standby modes, you can feel better about your entertainment experience without sacrificing power or features. Not Clear how to play zone 2 speakers in another room, how is that accomplished, is that what the speaker B connection is used for?
    pat  Feb 01, 2016
    1 answer
    A
Have had the receiver for a few days. The iControl AV5 app on a smart phone or tablet seems to be easier to use for speaker configuration than the remote and TV monitor. Connect the Zone 2 speakers to Surround Back. Use the IControl AV5 and select HD Zone to choose the input for the HD Zone and to control the volume and other audio features. I am able to use the HD zone for audio alone and for 2-speaker audio and video on an HD TV in a second room. You cannot do 7.2 with Dolby Atmos in the main room and use zone 2 in another room. You can do 5.2 surround and zone 2.

Does the zone 2 hdmi pass audio and video to a second tv if watching the same content on the main out?

Yes.: "The Pioneer receiver also provides a Zone 2 HDMI output, so two different HDMI audio/video feeds can be sent to two different displays (Main Zone & Zone 2) at the same time directly from the receiver's HDMI inputs. HDMI Zone 2 will output up to 4K video and 2-channel audio for the HDMI input source (1-7) selected; when HDMI 3-6 inputs are select in the main zone, it is only possible to select the same input in Zone 2." Q
Is it possible to output 4k video to the primary hdmi and the same video in 1080p to the second hdmi output?
    felix  Dec 01, 2015
    1 answer
    A
No. There are two problems with that: The receiver will not downscale the 4K resolution for a 1080 display & the 1080 display will not have the required HDCP 2.2 capability for copy-protected 4K video content. You can have 4K video source playing in the main zone and a different (non-4K) video source playing on the secondary TV at the same time though. I hope that helps!

This receiver has a HDMI video output to a second zone but does not mention how you would get audio to accompany that video? I would like to send audio and video via HDMI to a second TV in another zone, can that be done with the VSX-1130?
