Our take on the Pioneer MVH-X360BT

by Jon Paulette
Pioneer

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Designed for digital

Pioneer's MVH-X360BT digital media receiver lets you enjoy music from your iPhone® or iPod®, select Android™ phones, or a USB thumb drive. You also get built-in Bluetooth® technology and Pioneer performance – all at a surprisingly nice price. Plus, you can still check out the news or a ballgame on good old-fashioned AM/FM radio.

Great tunes, no discs needed

With direct iPod and iPhone control, you can plug your device into the receiver's USB port and make music selections through the receiver. As a bonus, the receiver will also charge your device while you're playing your tunes. If you own an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, you can take advantage of Siri® Eyes Free functionality with a touch of a button, accessing a variety of functions with your voice commands.

If you're using an iPod, iPhone, or USB device, Pioneer's integrated MIXTRAX virtual DJ technology can turn your music collection into a non-stop playlist, with customizable transitions and effects that will make your car feel more like a club. You can also set the background display to pulsate and change color along with the tempo of the music.

Android users can control their music via Bluetooth or plug into the front panel USB port and play music while getting a charge. You can also plug in a thumb drive and enjoy MP3, WMA, and WAV files, or use the aux input to connect an MP3 player or portable satellite radio tuner.

Pioneer MVH-X360BT Digital Media Receiver

Pioneer's smartphone-friendly MVH-X360BT receiver also offers hands-free calling and music streaming.

Built-in Bluetooth™

The MVH-X360BT features built-in Bluetooth, so you can enjoy hands-free calling and wireless music streaming while you drive. You'll speak into the included external microphone and hear the other end of the conversation through your vehicle's speakers. With “Guest Mode,” you can add or replace a mobile device with ease -- a great feature for a family car with multiple drivers, or one driver with multiple devices.

Compact chassis, big performance

With no CD player to worry about, Pioneer's designers were able to fit lots of features into a chassis that's 40% shallower than their CD receivers. Pioneer's powerful MOSFET amplifier gives you outstanding sound, while Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR) technology brings back the musical detail lost when you compress music. A 5-band graphic equalizer lets you adjust the sound to suit your tastes, while a set of RCA preamp outputs will allow you to expand your system for maximum performance.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The MVH-X360BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer MVH-X360BT.

SPP + USB Pairing w/ Guest Mode: With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the MVH-X360BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings (your phone must also support SSP). When your paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this head unit, but only one device can be used at a time. You can also pair your Apple iPhone by simply connecting it to the Pioneer head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display. In addition, the MVH-X360BT features "Guest Mode", which allows you to add and replace a mobile device instantly to the receiver. Guest Mode is a great feature for a family vehicle with multiple drivers or a driver with multiple devices because it allows users to pair and delete devices easily without a lengthy registration or deletion process.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The MVH-X360BT supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The MVH-X360BT allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the MVH-X360BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
Note: The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Song/Artist Info): The Pioneer MVH-X360BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. The MVH-X360BT will be able to control basic playback features; Play, Pause, & Skip Tracks (app must also support). The head unit will also display your music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

    USB & Android Integration

Front-Panel USB Input (Android Compliant): The unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) or USB Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) compliant device; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The USB port enables audio playback & control of MP3, WMA, and WAV music files stored on your portable USB MSC/MTP device through the Pioneer MVH-X360BT. USB devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the digital media receiver's USB port (1A) and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

    • File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA albums and tracks on a connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. Music files are listed first by Artist name, then by Album name, and finally by Song title.
    • Song/Artist Information: During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information; including artist, song, and album name.
    • Playback Controls: The Pioneer digital media receiver provides basic operations like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random for USB device playback. When a compatible Android smartphone is connected, the head unit will control music playback functions; you will not be able to control your music from the smartphone.
Note: The unit's front-panel USB port supports Android OS 4.0+ (Ice Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean) as a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) device. It also supports Android OS 2.2+ (Froyo/Gingerbread) as a Mass Storage Class (MSC) device; as of 11/25/2013. The receiver does not support Android OS 3.1+ (Honeycomb) or other Android operating systems not listed.

MP3/WMA/WAV Playback: The Pioneer MVH-X360BT supports the following types of MP3/WMA/WAV files loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type USB (MSC/MTP)
    File System FAT 12/16/32
Playable File Types MP3: bit rate of 8-320 kbps w/ sampling rate of 32, 44.1, 48 kHz
    WMA:
bit rate of 48-320 kbps w/ sampling rate of 32, 44.1, 48 kHz
WAV: bit rate of 8- or 16-bit w/ sampling rate of 16-48kHz or 22.05-44.1kHz (not compatible w/ MTP)
    Maximum # of Folders/Files 500 folders/15,000 files
Tags ID3 tags (ver.1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4), WMA tags

Media App Control (for Android): The Media App Control mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps on your Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.3+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Media App Control lets you take control of compatible music apps on your paired Android device through the Pioneer MVH-X360BT. Media App Control allows you to play, pause, and change tracks from a compatible music app directly from the controls on the Pioneer head unit. The app's name (i.e. "iHeartAuto"), station identification, and song/artist information will be displayed on the head unit's LCD screen (when applicable, depending on app). Compatible music apps include (as of 11/25/2013):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The MVH-X360BT is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player.

    AM/FM + Pandora Radio

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Pandora Internet Radio (for iPhone & Android): The free Pandora App (either from iTunes Apps or Google Play) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer MVH-X360BT using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android smartphone. Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the MVH-X360BT via the appropriate Pioneer iPod connector cable (130CDIU51/130CDIU52, sold separately) or the connector-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Pioneer MVH-X360BT. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. The MVH-X360BT provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information.

    • Station List w/ Shuffle: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z). You can also listen to songs played randomly from various stations within your Station List.
    • New Stations: New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing.
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song/artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The MVH-X360BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power specifications for the MVH-X360BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer MVH-X360BT features one pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's preamp output scan be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or non-fading subwoofer outputs. When the head unit's preamp output is configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The MVH-X360BT employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs. You can adjust the crossover slope from -12 to -24.
    • LPF: When the preamp output is configured as a subwoofer channel, a low pass filter only allows frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to be output to your connected subwoofer. The crossover slope can be set from -12 to -24.

Equalizer: The Pioneer MVH-X360BT features a Preset & Custom EQ. The built-in equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The two Custom modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80Hz, 250Hz, 800Hz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz) from +/-6dB. Custom 1 can be set separately for each source (except for USB/iPod/Pandora); while Custom 2 and the other 5 presets are shared settings used for all sources.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Audio Level Settings: The Pioneer MVH-X360BT digital media receiver offers a variety of audio settings to tailor the bass, treble, and volume level to your preference.

    • Bass Boost The MVH-X360BT features a bass boost function which can be used to enhance low-frequency bass sound. The bass boost function can be set between 0-6.
    • Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone/iPad. It is also not supported by USB MTP devices.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer MVH-X360BT in-dash digital media receiver features detachable face security. No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

LCD w/ LED Backlight: The MVH-X360BT features a single-line, multi-segmented LCD with LED backlight that offers a black background and white alphanumeric character text (up to 12 characters). The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu to On or Off.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose different patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can press the "DISP" button to turn off). When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the "DISP" button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On, you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The MVH-X360BT comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause source, change the display, and adjust the audio. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel). In addition, you can answer/end calls from a Bluetooth connected smartphone.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I've always loved Pioneer stuff ever since I worked for another retailer. They've always had some of the best quality at the same prices as everyone else. This headunit does almost everything. Play music or make calls from your phone, play music off a thumb drive, whatever.

    Living with the MVH-X360BT

Let me join the other reviewer who had issue with the illumination. The buttons to the left of the volume control are translucent, the light bouncing around in them makes the labels hard to read and they ARE TOO BRIGHT at night, despite the hardly effective dimming control. I'd sooner have these buttons appear the same as the ones to the right of the volume--black with white, backlit labels. Dimming, on the other hand, sets an acceptable brightness level on the dot matrix display which, in the daytime, is nowhere near bright enough to be read at a glance on higher brightness. The alternate function labels above the six frequency preset buttons are not illuminated at all and must be memorized for use at night. The receiver sounds great, and is fairly easy to operate and navigate.
    Pros:
    Sound Operation Price
    Cons:
    Illumination, as described

This is my third Pioneer head unit in the same car in 10 years - my sister is buying the one I just took out (first one fried after about four years). I bought this one because I'm tired of holding my phone super lower and on speaker to avoid being pulled over because I never charge my hands free headset. I love the look of it, my last unit was just the Main Control scrolly knob, I'm glad to have preset buttons back again! My only gripe is the brightness. The dimmer takes the blaring blue tones down to a little bit less blaring blue tone. It's bright. So bright that it's distracting. I just drove home from my dad's (he installed it) and had to cover it with one hand the entire time. My old unit was dim, it was easy to see at night as well as during the day. I plan on trying to dim the buttons with a sharpie first (sigh, I know, horrible) and if that doesn't do it, which I doubt it will, I'm going to use nail polish. I'm sure I'll have to touch it up over the years but I'll live with it.
    Pros:
cheap, good quality, easy to install
    Cons:
very bright blue buttons, unable to really dim them.

I have had several similar Pioneer units in the past, and they don't disappoint. You get a functional little receiver that's not flashy but gets the job done. I wanted to stream audio and make calls from my phone, and listen to the radio. This does exactly that. This unit can also play MP3s from a thumbdrive or you can hook up an iPod via USB to get iTunes controls. I did find the BT audio to be a little picky. My phone does not automatically connect to this unit, but that may be a problem with the phone and not the player. This means you will need to manually set BT as the source on the receiver and connect your phone if it's anything like mine (Google Nexus 4). THERE IS NO CD FUNCTIONALITY! The sales page makes this pretty explicit so make sure you don't miss that. If you want to play CDs you need a different unit.
    Pros:
Simple functional DIN receiver. Makes phone calls, streams audio over bluetooth, plays MP3s.
    Cons:
Did you automatically find and connect to phone over BT. Very little customization options (I have owned Pioneer units with adjustable LED lights and the such.) Wiring harness did not have audio channel names printed on the wires, but the colors are standard so it shouldn't be an issue to wire it up to your vehicle. The wires did not come with the tips pre-clipped, which is a minor issue but it would have been nice to have.

Great for my needs. Requires a bit of set up to get the blue tooth working properly with two or more devices, but once figured out, it runs well. Works right off of a USB drive filled with my entire library of mp3's. Set up could have used a bit more user friendly and ergonomic controls and better navigation through menus, buttons felt slightly cheap (my own gripe I suppose). Sounds excellent in my stock speakers and a lot of functionality once you get used to it. Definitely a great buy.

    Good entry level unit

Written By Rivern, New Jersey on Monday, March 24, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is probably the cheapest Pioneer unit I've ever purchased so I wasn't expecting all the bells and whistles of a higher end unit. It provides all the normal functions of course and great sound I've come to expect. It handles bluetooth calls well as well as detecting the bluetooth on my phone to play music. One very minor annoyance is that when it connects it will automatically start playing music store locally through the default music app. I tend to use TuneIn Radio and Google play as my main music choices. My girlfriend uses here Ipod without any issues. All in all this is a good unit with some cool basic features and is definitely worth a buy.
    Pros:
Great sound and features for the price.
    Cons:
Display is hard to see in bright daylight. (Could also be because of the angle of the unit in my car. The unit slightly tilts upwards due to design)

    Great Radio Great Price

Written By John, Central Missouri on Friday, March 21, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my wife's Jeep Cherokee because the clock would display a random time when you turned on the ignition and she wanted to listen to her music. The stock radio was just a radio, it was AM or FM that's it. So after I put a new Pioneer DEH-X4600BT in my truck I decided she should have a new radio as well. The MVH-X360 and the X4600 differ only in the fact that the X4600 has a CD player and is four channel the X360 doesn't have the CD and is two channel. My truck has four speakers and the Jeep has two. In my research I wanted to know the difference between two and four channel and it said that you give up the fader, however when setting up the X3600 there's is a fader in the audio setup, and the radio wire harness has wires for all four speakers, so I'm still a little confused about the difference, I'll have to do a little more research. You can read my other review for the DEH-X4600BT about purchasing from Crutchfield's and the how easy the units are to use.

    Great Aftermarket Head Unit!

Written By Jon A., Kansas City, MO on Wednesday, March 19, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was definitely a great decision to buy this. I was having trouble with my cassette adapter that I was using in my 4Runner, and decided to upgrade it. After hearing from my cousin that he really like his, I decided to pull the trigger on this one. It came relatively quickly, and I was very excited to use it. After wiring it up and getting it set back in my head unit mounts, I was very pleased with it's performance. It doesn't feel cheap when I'm pressing buttons on it, and the sound quality is great. (especially since I got new speakers too!) Having Bluetooth is awesome because I just get in the car and my music starts playing where it left off, no hassle with repairing it. Also, having the wiring harnesses and the diagrams sent with this package from Crutchfield was awesome. I didn't have to worry about which wire goes where and how it plugged in. It was very simple. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to someone who wants a great after market head unit, but doesn't want to break the bank.
    Pros:
-Lots of customization for your EQ -Bluetooth sounds very nice, I was pleasantly surprised -The ability to scroll through songs using the display and not my iPhone is very nice -Very subtle design, it doesn't look out of place in my vehicle -Easy to install in my vehicle
    Cons:
-Screen is a little hard to see during the day, but not a huge issue -You have to pick the right place to put your microphone so it doesn't pick up road noise.

VERY COOL! The Bluetooth links automatically to my cellphone. Makes driving safer and stress free.
    Pros:
Bluetooth link at a great price. If you need an upgrade buy this! I won't be seen holding a cellphone again while driving!
    Cons:
I think this does not link via the usb to my android very well. Seems to be made more for an iPhone. But, I have not dug into it yet.

Bought this item for my grandsons 95 Chevy Camaro z28 . Didn't want to crave up the dash to install so with the included adapter kits for the stock Bose system installation was a breeze . They even included directions on how to take off the panels on the dash to get the old out and new one in . Sounded better than I thought it would .
    Pros:
Great sound over the stock system plus able to answer cell phone with the blue tooth connection .
    Cons:
    None

    Great unit

I bought this unit for one of our company vehicles that had recently had its Kenwood deck stolen out of it. Living in the police state of California, I wanted to find something with Bluetooth but I didn't want that one specific function to "break the bank" just incase it got stolen again. Incredibly easy to use, the Bluetooth sounds and works just the same as my bosses Lexus, and you can change songs playing from your iPhone with the included remote. I'm considering ordering 3-4 more of these for some of the other work vehicles and one for my personal vehicle. I cannot believe for what I paid I was able to get so many features and install it myself in under an hour.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, easy, works fantastic with the iPhone, clicker and Bluetooth mic included
    Cons:
No CD player but do they even sell CDs anymore?

I have a 97 subaru legacy. Took about 2 hours to remove old stereo correctly. Lots of screws and a few small panel to remove. Was able to snake the microphone under the dash and thru side panels right to the visor. People say the I sound clear on hands free. My stock speakers sound better, now I'm getting some better speakers
    Pros:
$ Bluetooth iPhone compatible. Hands free mic

    Jeep Install

Written By Lawley, El Paso, TX on Saturday, March 15, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation was very simple and actually only had to look at the master cut sheet twice I believe. It took me a few minutes to learn how to navigate through the menus with the remote, but that's my fault because I didn't take 5 minutes to look at the book. After flipping through it while eating I pretty much know how to do everything I need to.
    Pros:
Price was great. No cd interface; which is the primary thing I was looking for. Very easy to setup and use.
    Cons:
Not many different display options, but it only being a single din I'm not sweating it to much. I would like to be able to set the color I want versus the standard blue, but there to for the price I'm fine with it.

This is quite a nice head unit. Overall it's a well rounded device with plenty of features and great audio quality.

It has a fairly subdued style once it's installed but the lights are always bright. Even with the dimmer mode enabled.
    Pros:
    - Well Priced - Good sound quality - Great features - Simple install - Decent looking - Good receiver range (both Bluetooth and FM) - Decent internal amp (You wont power subs with it but it's quite alright for some Coaxials)
    Cons:
    - Very bright buttons even when dimmed (Really the three large ones on the left) - Like most aftermarket head units, it is kinda gaudy. - It was a bit confusing to get Bluetooth set up properly but after you do it connects instantly

Decent device for the money, I would consider spending a bit more for a quality head unit.
    Pros:
Installed easy. Works ok. Fairly easy to set up.
    Cons:
Bluetooth Sync is somewhat flaky. Sometimes connects to Pandora, Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes shows correct song title on screen when listening to MP3s via BT. Volume knob is garbage. If you barely touch it wrong it scrolls through menus instead of turning volume up or down. I will give it a try, but probably return it/replace it with a better unit.

This receiver was installed into a 2008 Corolla to replace the 6 CD changer factory unit. The primary objective was to supply iPod / iPhone music playback and hands-free iPhone use at an affordable price. The unit installed easily and was very easy / intuitive for my 18-yr old to set-up for their personal use.
    Pros:
    - iPod / iPhone playback and hands-free calling - Easy install and set-up (e.g. bluetooth pairing) - long microphone wire for very flexible placement - Great features for the price
    Cons:
    - None....yet...everything is exactly as advertised. No surprises.

Great value for the money $99, my early 2000s car now has hands free calling, blue tooth audio, greater equalization control that my stock Bose speakers are realizing their full potential. I am not missing the CD Player (the Pioneer does not have one) at all. Besides, one can cram in multiple CDs (music, audio books) onto a flash drive, and use the USB port.
    Pros:
Value for the money, sound quality, ease of install
    Cons:
Radio reception is not the best. I have lost FM and AM stations that I used to get clearly on my stock unit.

Replaced the wife's Pioneer DEH-4800MP with this. She is very happy with the upgrade. It syncs to her phone as soon as the car starts, no AUX wire to mess with, and she loves the "hands free" calling. My just order one for my car now cause I'm a little envious...
    Pros:
Sounds good, enough features to make the wife happy, and was priced nicely.
    Cons:
Having to run the wire for the "hands free" mic behind the dash, but considering you are adding this feature to an older car, its really not much of a con I guess.

Spartan product for a good price

Written By Tophs, St Louis, MO on Monday, March 03, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice product. Just wanted to make my 1999 Ford Ranger a little more modern. Upgraded a tape/CD deck to this, which let me ditch all my CDs (and my Top Gun soundtrack cassette tape), and just use my iPhone for music now. The trim adapter and wiring harness from Crutchfield were great and made installation very doable for someone with no experience whatsoever working on something like this. This unit isn't anything fancy, but was pretty much all I needed to start playing music from my phone wirelessly.
    Pros:
Bluetooth connection is great. iPhone setup is pretty easy (once you figure it out). Very affordable. Integration with my iPhone 5s is pretty good.
    Cons:
Screen is a little too dim during the day. Instruction manual is next to worthless. When using an iPhone in bluetooth mode, you can't scroll through songs/artists/albums/etc using the stereo controls. You can work around this by either plugging your iPhone in via USB, or just using Siri commands. The downside is Siri screws up what you're asking for fairly often.

    Fantastic connectivity and sound

Written By Rich, Northeast on Saturday, March 01, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The install went well, no complaints. The unit produces loud, clear music with tight bass, I am more than happy with the quality of the sound. Three thumbs up, really.

Now for the gripes, which are petty considering the price but they're still gripes. The display is impossible to read in the sun and there is only a high or low brightness control. The display tries to look "cool" with graphics and whatnot but in this day and age with high resolution displays in our pockets, these graphics look cheesy and dated. The Bluetooth is superb, I don't even have to take my phone out of my pocket when I get in the car, it just connects and my music plays. Beautiful !
    Pros:
Very smooth functioning Bluetooth Quality sound
    Cons:
Cheap display and annoying graphics Poor visibility in direct light No dimmer, only hi or low brightness Due to limited character space, they abbreviate everything which makes understanding menu functions difficult sometimes.

I can't believe the features for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Two years ago I purchased a Pioneer double din video screen model with bluetooth and it cost a fortune. After I installed it I found out it required an extra $200 module for bluetooth streaming, not just using it for phone functions. I was ticked, Especially considering how worthless the screen function turned out to be since it has such a tiny viewing angle, is low quality, hard to press, and I have probably use it a total of 10 times. I got a blackberry bluetooth streaming module (for $30) to be able to stream music but it's still a pain to have to connect to both devices whenever I start my car since half the time my phone doesn't.

Fast forward two years and my wife needs a new stereo. I get this one for a small fraction of the cost and while it does not have the worthless screen, it does everything much better. Interfaces with android apps, streams bluetooth music, and i easier to use The only thing more difficult is choosing music on the USB.
