Overview

Our take on the Pioneer MVH-X360BT

Designed for digital

Pioneer's MVH-X360BT digital media receiver lets you enjoy music from your iPhone® or iPod®, select Android™ phones, or a USB thumb drive. You also get built-in Bluetooth® technology and Pioneer performance – all at a surprisingly nice price. Plus, you can still check out the news or a ballgame on good old-fashioned AM/FM radio.

Great tunes, no discs needed

With direct iPod and iPhone control, you can plug your device into the receiver's USB port and make music selections through the receiver. As a bonus, the receiver will also charge your device while you're playing your tunes. If you own an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, you can take advantage of Siri® Eyes Free functionality with a touch of a button, accessing a variety of functions with your voice commands.

If you're using an iPod, iPhone, or USB device, Pioneer's integrated MIXTRAX virtual DJ technology can turn your music collection into a non-stop playlist, with customizable transitions and effects that will make your car feel more like a club. Android users can control their music via Bluetooth or plug into the front panel USB port and play music while getting a charge. You can also plug in a thumb drive and enjoy MP3, WMA, and WAV files, or use the aux input to connect an MP3 player or portable satellite radio tuner.

Pioneer MVH-X360BT Digital Media Receiver

Pioneer's smartphone-friendly MVH-X360BT receiver also offers hands-free calling and music streaming.

Built-in Bluetooth™

The MVH-X360BT features built-in Bluetooth, so you can enjoy hands-free calling and wireless music streaming while you drive. You'll speak into the included external microphone and hear the other end of the conversation through your vehicle's speakers. With “Guest Mode,” you can add or replace a mobile device with ease -- a great feature for a family car with multiple drivers, or one driver with multiple devices.

Compact chassis, big performance

With no CD player to worry about, Pioneer's designers were able to fit lots of features into a chassis that's 40% shallower than their CD receivers. Pioneer's powerful MOSFET amplifier gives you outstanding sound, while Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR) technology brings back the musical detail lost when you compress music. A 5-band graphic equalizer lets you adjust the sound to suit your tastes, while a set of RCA preamp outputs will allow you to expand your system for maximum performance.

This digital media receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

The bluetooth connection drops the sound every once in a while, sometimes stops the music player completely. Re-connecting the BT device doesn't help. I have a more expensive Pioneer radio in my truck and it doesn't have the same issue with the same phone.

The positives are that it works like you would expect. Here are the two negatives. First; the display screen is completely unreadable during the day. The screen is not bright enough and there is no setting to make it visible on a sunny day. Second; the control options are very confusing and I've always had a hard time changing a setting. It's been very frustrating. Overall, I would recommend this product though. I put it in my patrol car and its a heck of a lot better than the factory system. LOVE THE BLUETOOTH!

    Pros: Bluetooth and remote control

Cons: Very low visibility display screen and difficult control settings

Purchased to replace an older aftermarket cd receiver with poor fm performance and lacking BT. My wife likes the local radio stations and this unit pulls in all the station the previous unit couldnt. Ive own several of the original Pioneer Supertuners (days of cassettes) so I hoped the genetics were still there. The MVH-X360BT also has very intuitive controls which is great for the technically inept. BT works perfectly which a Windows phone although most features dont. The mic isnt overly sensitive and mounting on the visor is probably best. Ours in on the column. All in all a great unit for the price. Cant really complaint about anything. And of course, it went in effortlessly with the kit!

Pros: Price, interface, sound quality, features, build quality

    Cons: For under $100, none.

The radio sounds great, looks good. I am not a techno type person and I find it a little difficult to use. I find myself fumbling trough menus. It was a little wide for my dash (2002 Sonata) and the panel that covered it had to be trimmed. The buttons on the left that are blue are very bright at night. I had a small problem during installation but Mike at Crutchfield support quickly helped me through it.

    Pros: Sounds good, looks good.

Cons: I would prefer more basic controls rather than a menu based operation. I guess that is part of being behind the times:-)

I bought this simply because of the price. I needed a cheap head unit for a 2nd car. Other than this unit doesn't have a CD player, I still cling on to the past, this product is awesome! The controls re easy to work with using the display. It has plenty of power and the audio adjustment features are very elaborate for a budget stereo. Bass, mid, and high frequency adjustments plus variable loudness settings. The best feature is the Bluetooth! It's so covenient. I feel much safer driving and taking calls now. The auto answer feature makes taking and making calls a breeze.

Pros: Bluetooth Phone & Bluetooth IPOD-MP3 player support, detailed audio adjustment features, easy to read and informative display.

Cons: none that I've worried about!

Excellent value. Read Review for details.

OK, for the money, this is a great value. I wanted to upgrade my 10 year old car radio so it had some kind of USB port to play music and podcasts from my iPod and it has me covered. I wanted to be able to hook my phone up so I could listen to conversations over Bluetooth rather than sticking a Bluetooth thingie in my ear. My Samsung Captivate Glide is not compatible so I"m not completely happy. I'll upgrade my phone in a few months and this radio will have me covered. The dimmer doesn't dim the buttons so it is too bright at night. The display is not bright enough (with the dimmer off) to read the clock during the day. This isn't good. I rated ease of use in the middle because there are a lot of options and not a lot of buttons. I really don't know how you could make it easier to use in the single DIN form factor with limited buttons. What's the point of the removable face plate? Who's going to steal a radio at this price? If you live in that kind of neighborhood, you probably need to worry about your whole car being stolen. Altogether, though, for the price, it's a good deal. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably buy a double DIN radio with a touch screen. It's just hard to drop $300 on a 10 year old car.

Pros: Heck of a bang for the buck

Cons: Too bright at night and too dim during the day.

If you dont have a CD collection, a digital media reciever is all you need.. i have all my songs on my phone and bluetooth connectivity really helps in keeping the wires out of my car. Phone calls can be answered using this device, so if your car came without that, this is a great feature. The build quality is just like any other reciever, a bit plasticky, but gets the job done. I cant comment much on sound quality since i dont have high end speakers, nor do I have discerning ears. But I find the audio good enough. The blue buttons on the left are a tad bit too bright, dimming doesnt help. The reciever has enough power to drive my door speakers (basic Kenwood ones costing about $60-70) loud enough that I generally go upto 80% of the volume where it becomes too loud. A separate subwoofer would be good in my setup since my doors start rattling and buzzing. This has an output for subwoofer like most recievers. Interface is not top notch, but for a single line display, it is alright; just like most other ones on the market. I dont find use for the remote. The included mic for phone calls picks up audio clearly, even from the back seat if you are parked. The USB port has a 1 Amp rating, so you can charge your phone on the go, even if you dont have a separate car charger. Due to the one line display, browsing through files on usb isnt that easy.

Pros: value for money bluetooth Ability to do phone calls good call quality

Cons: Interface isnt very intuitive, the manual isnt that good either. bright lights!!

The radio performs as advertised. Bluetooth setup is very easy (easier than the factory radio in my 2009 Mazda 6). Perfect radio if your primary way of listening to music is digital via Ipad, Ipod.

Pros: Love the fact that you can connect via bluetooth, via USB, and the headphone (jack). So you can connect any device. The Crutchfield install kit was awesome. Fit perfectly

Cons: I took out a larger radio so I have room in the dash for a bigger replacement. The buttons are kind of small, I should have considered a unit with a larger face. Also my stock controls are red and this unit has blue lighting so it doesn't match the rest of the dash. Really not the radios fault - my selection ability.

This replaced the factory radio in a Honda Civic. It was a tremendous improvement in sound, and so much better having tons of music on a little thumb drive. The blue tooth worked flawlessly for making and receiving phone calls. My model of Civic required the stock radio to remain connected in the car for the locks to work, so the installation was a bit of a pain, but that's specific to my car. My only real complaints are the display. Many have said is hard to read, and they're right. It's almost impossible to read during the day. At night however, the blue lights under the button are blinding. Unbelievably bright. I had to tape over them so I could see to drive. Unfortunately, my car was stolen about a month after installing this unit.

Pros: Good radio. Good sound. Bluetooth phone calls. MP3s from thumb drive.

Cons: Bright lights at night. Difficult to read display in the day.

I only kept this unit for about 2 weeks before returning it. I wanted to like it, but the sound quality just was not there. To be able to drive the polk speakers in my car to a level that had decently 'full' sound you had to use too many of the sound adjustments (bass boost, loudless, eq, etc)... there were just too many sound processing options overlapping and stacked on top of one another so all options sounded either flat or way over processed. The menus were poorly laid out and the button interface was very messy. I used to be a big fan of Pioneer car electronics but i was not too impressed with this model (maybe it's just the pricepoint or the fact that they don't put as good of digital to analog processors in the media receivers. I ended up buying an Alpine for not much more and am much happier now.

    Pros: Cost

Cons: Sound quality, menus, build quality, design/style

This unit does what I needed which was to add bluetooth and an audio input. The price was reasonable as this was an upgrade for a 2002 Toyota Tacoma double cab truck. I had to add an anti-glare cover to make it usable.

Pros: bluetooth, usb audio input, fit

Cons: Can't see the display due to glare. The blue leds lighting the buttons are always on, even with the unit off. Only 2 modes for dimming the display. Display options (clock, device, time left in track, bouncing equalizer bars, track info - which scrolls by) are not particularly useful. I would like the track info displayed without scrolling. Button labels are hard to read.

I upgraded from a factory 1991 radio unit who's display would no longer illuminate and didn't have useful functionality. This is really a top shelf setup for a casual listener and to have the associated hardware, mounting items, and shipping included makes the deal even better. The only items you'll need besides what's included in the box are some butt connectors and heat shrink or solder, depending on how you'll be making the connections and a grounding lug. The connection instructions are clear and after getting the wires connected and bundled, installation of the unit is a breeze.

    Pros: Value, functionality, sound.

    Cons: None.

I think that this radio is perfect for that person that has a phone that streams music. The fact that it also has a USB attachment and AUX is also very nice because you basically have any way of playing music that could want besides CD's but lets face it...who does use CD's anymore?

Pros: USB, AUX, and Bluetooth compatible. The Bluetooth works great and people can still hear you clear with the windows open.

Cons: Only thing I would say is the CD slot missing for those that use CD's

Overall a good value at $100. I have no need for a CD player any longer, so the fact that it did not have one was fine. I really liked the fact that it offered hands free for my phone. I was skeptical on how well it would work. The fact that it came with an external mic gave me hopes that it would be at least useable. I have had several phone conversations using the hands free option and everyone says the sound quality is good. On my end I'm getting a full duplex call too, so I've been very pleased with it. I do not like the brightness of the source, phone, and band buttons. At night, they are so bright they distract me as I drive. Also, the screen is not bright enough during the day. The dimmer setting is so slight, it's useless.

Pros: Built in hands free and music via Bluetooth. Easy to use. Good value for your money.

Cons: Source, phone, and band buttons are too bright and distract me when I drive. No separate bass/treble control. Tone is controlled by preset equalizer and loudness. This is one of my biggest pet peeves for any car audio.

This head unit replaced a tape deck in a 2001 Corolla, bringing my car into the modern age. It was a snap to install. Sound quality is superior to the factory unit, but mostly I wanted the unit for Bluetooth and hands-free. Bluetooth streaming from an Android phone works well, and call quality through the unit and mic (mounted next to the rear view mirror) is also quite good. The display is readable under most lighting, and while the blue light is a bit on the bright side, with the dimmer on at all times, it's not too distracting. If anything, I wish the lighting was more understated; car manufacturers seem to get this right in their factory units. Flashy lighting aside, the interface is pretty good, considering how much functionality needs to be packed into a single DIN unit. Once programmed for your phone, it's pretty intuitive.

Pros: Good sound, Bluetooth, good call quality, front USB charging port

Cons: Display hard to read in direct sunlight, 80s style lighting

I have owned this item for about 6 months now. I love it. I mainly purchased this item because of the simplicity of not having a CD mechanism built into it. I don't use CDs and haven't for a long time now. Connecting the phone to the unit is simple. Crutchfield does not disappoint with the included MasterSheet and everything needed to install. The only thing that I notice that isn't included are the end caps to crimp the wires but that is expected. (first time purchasing a head unit from them) It wasn't a big deal because I solder the wires and heat shrink them anyways. If you are looking for a replacement to a sub-par stereo in your car or upgrading from stock, then this will be a wonderful choice because of the price and features you get with it.

Pros: Simple design, sound quality is decent, price is great.

Cons: When using the Pandora app on the phone, and choosing Pandora as a source, it sometimes doesn't connect. The unit will display something along the lines of unable to connect. Another con that I found was when using Pandora and you turn off the car, the music will continue to play through the phone for a few seconds (anywhere between 1sec to 10 seconds).

Really all most people will ever need in a receiver. Has outputs for amps, etc,. Built in crossover and EQ. Can't imagine what else more expensive receivers can add that would justify the cost. Easy to install. Took maybe 30 minutes.

Pros: Value. Has most all of the bells and whistles. Visibility in sunlight is better than expected but not perfect. I was concerned the blue lights on the unit would bother me a night but they do not.

Cons: Tiny labeling of buttons impossible to read if you are over 40. Balance, Fade and other audio adjustments requires going through too many menus to get to. Should have an "audio" button to take you straight there as my Jeep requires constant adjustment depending if the roof is up or not. As with all units these days, displays are too flashy and busy. Wish they made more OEM type aftermarket units without all the flashing lights and used more manual controls instead of having to go into menus.

I was just replacing a factory unit in an older truck and wanted Bluetooth. This does that just fine, have had no problems connecting and sound is good. What i don't like is the display is hard to read, this is probably cause this is my secondary vehicle, my daily driver has lcd touchscreen so that is what i am use to. This unit if it's sunny out and i have sunglasses one i can't see it. Not a huge deal was just surprised how much better my screen is in my other vehicle. Overall it's great option as a cheap basic unit to be able to use Bluetooth but if i was putting this in my daily driver I would probably go for something a little nicer.

Pros: Price, Bluetooth, easy to install

    Cons: display unreadable in sun

For the price how can you complain? Good radio. Good sound. Good looks. Easy to hook up to my father-in-law's 1989 BMW. Not much else to say but it does the job and provides a nice update to an classic car.

Pros: Good looking, great sound, simple controls

Cons: Would have been nice if this unit offered storage of an MP3 player INSIDE the unite (like some Sonys) -- note there is plenty of room inside the (mostly empty) unit. Amazing how they have miniaturized the electronics these days.

Bought this unit to replace the factory head unit in my Ford F-150. The built in double DIN had radio and CD player but did not have auxilary or bluetooth, which I wanted. Installation was easy with the included harness and dash kit. Was happy that the unit included a external microphone as every unit I have used without a external microphone was unusable for calls. Setup was easy and pairing my phone was also easy. The unit will display lots of useful information on the display, though if you would like the clock to display you are stuck with only seeing "BT Audio" and the time. I wish it would display the time and also cycle through some of the other data. Overall the unit is very nice and for the price it was well worth it. My only few complaints is that I have not found a setting to stop the whatever I was listening to last to autoplay when I start my car. I like the feature but I would like the option to turn it off. Also, I wish they would have placed the "Pause/play" button in a more prominent location. Since this is mainly a bluetooth unit it is nice to have the controls I use the most easily accessible. The pause button is integrated into the "4" key and is difficult to find while driving. I with they would have made this a dedicateed button on the left side. Phone calls work very well using the external mic. I mounted my mic on the driver sun visor. I am using an Android device and the built in Siri integration also works for Google Now by holding down M.C. button.

Pros: Great price and easy instillation. External microphone is a nice addition and lots of inputs for your phone. Screen is bright and readable (I dont have as much an issue as others have with the brightness). Google Now (or Siri) can be activated using the unit.

Cons: Wish the "Pause/Play" button was in a better location. Making phone calls on the unit is very clunky. Would be much easier to just use your phone or dial using voice activation. I wish you could always view the clock while also seeing other data on the display.

I wanted to replace the OEM radio in my 1995 F-150 that would have blue tooth. Features for price was a big factor in my decision. This radio was said to interface with iPhone for hands free use with phone and audio playback. It is as advertised. Setup was as easy as any bluetooth interface I have ever used. I used the OEM speakers and the sound is really good though I am sure it would be improved with better speakers if that is in your budget. I have not used the handsfree mic often and there seems to be some wind noise with the window down but that is to be expected. Install was a breeze wit the most time consuming part was soldering the wiring harness but it is worth the effort.

This isn't a bad little box for the money you pay for it. It does everything a cheap replacement for an aged OEM unit should do. The bluetooth works well, the microphone is good, it's relatively easy to use, and it sounds good. The complaints about the blue buttons on the left are justified, they are just less annoying in my car because of the placement of the radio compared to the driver. The display is a bit hard to see at times, but I can read it. One thing I hate is when you plug your phone in to USB, it automatically switches to the USB from the source you were on previously and you can't turn this "feature" off. Then when you start the car the next time, the unit is turned off and you have to re-select your source.

Pros: Works well, sounds good, does it's job.

Cons: Display isn't great, auto source selection when plugging your phone in to the USB.

Pros: - Bluetooth works well with my Android phone, when using matching settings (see con).

Cons: - Numbered button labels cannot be seen at night, so you have to memorize what some buttons do. - Can't read display at all during daytime, maybe I have to mess with the settings. - Balance seems off at centered settings; the driver hears more sound from the right side than left. - For some reason, BT connection is not an isolated step. I seem to get good connections when unit is set on "BT Audio" but not on "App" or others, for which I usually see "Connection Failed". Should just connect 1

Let me join the other reviewer who had issue with the illumination. The buttons to the left of the volume control are translucent, the light bouncing around in them makes the labels hard to read and they ARE TOO BRIGHT at night, despite the hardly effective dimming control. I'd sooner have these buttons appear the same as the ones to the right of the volume--black with white, backlit labels. Dimming, on the other hand, sets an acceptable brightness level on the dot matrix display which, in the daytime, is nowhere near bright enough to be read at a glance on higher brightness. The alternate function labels above the six frequency preset buttons are not illuminated at all and must be memorized for use at night. The receiver sounds great, and is fairly easy to operate and navigate.

    Pros: Sound Operation Price

    Cons: Illumination, as described

    Works great!

This unit is easy to use and sounds great. Only problem is the Dimmer is not nearly as effective as I'd think it should be. Left side buttons are pretty bright blue and shine right into your face at night.

Pros: Bluetooth is easily paired. Interface is intuitive.

    Cons: Dimmer not very effective

    Screen not visible

This is my third Pioneer head unit in the same car in 10 years - my sister is buying the one I just took out (first one fried after about four years). I bought this one because I'm tired of holding my phone super lower and on speaker to avoid being pulled over because I never charge my hands free headset. I love the look of it, my last unit was just the Main Control scrolly knob, I'm glad to have preset buttons back again! My only gripe is the brightness. The dimmer takes the blaring blue tones down to a little bit less blaring blue tone. It's bright. So bright that it's distracting. I just drove home from my dad's (he installed it) and had to cover it with one hand the entire time. My old unit was dim, it was easy to see at night as well as during the day. I plan on trying to dim the buttons with a sharpie first (sigh, I know, horrible) and if that doesn't do it, which I doubt it will, I'm going to use nail polish. I'm sure I'll have to touch it up over the years but I'll live with it.

Pros: cheap, good quality, easy to install

Cons: very bright blue buttons, unable to really dim them.

I have had several similar Pioneer units in the past, and they don't disappoint. You get a functional little receiver that's not flashy but gets the job done. I wanted to stream audio and make calls from my phone, and listen to the radio. This does exactly that. This unit can also play MP3s from a thumbdrive or you can hook up an iPod via USB to get iTunes controls. I did find the BT audio to be a little picky. My phone does not automatically connect to this unit, but that may be a problem with the phone and not the player. This means you will need to manually set BT as the source on the receiver and connect your phone if it's anything like mine (Google Nexus 4). THERE IS NO CD FUNCTIONALITY! The sales page makes this pretty explicit so make sure you don't miss that. If you want to play CDs you need a different unit.

Pros: Simple functional DIN receiver. Makes phone calls, streams audio over bluetooth, plays MP3s.

Cons: Did you automatically find and connect to phone over BT. Very little customization options (I have owned Pioneer units with adjustable LED lights and the such.) Wiring harness did not have audio channel names printed on the wires, but the colors are standard so it shouldn't be an issue to wire it up to your vehicle. The wires did not come with the tips pre-clipped, which is a minor issue but it would have been nice to have.

Great for my needs. Requires a bit of set up to get the blue tooth working properly with two or more devices, but once figured out, it runs well. Works right off of a USB drive filled with my entire library of mp3's. Set up could have used a bit more user friendly and ergonomic controls and better navigation through menus, buttons felt slightly cheap (my own gripe I suppose). Sounds excellent in my stock speakers and a lot of functionality once you get used to it. Definitely a great buy.

This is probably the cheapest Pioneer unit I've ever purchased so I wasn't expecting all the bells and whistles of a higher end unit. It provides all the normal functions of course and great sound I've come to expect. It handles bluetooth calls well as well as detecting the bluetooth on my phone to play music. One very minor annoyance is that when it connects it will automatically start playing music store locally through the default music app. I tend to use TuneIn Radio and Google play as my main music choices. My girlfriend uses here Ipod without any issues. All in all this is a good unit with some cool basic features and is definitely worth a buy.

Pros: Great sound and features for the price.

Cons: Display is hard to see in bright daylight. (Could also be because of the angle of the unit in my car. The unit slightly tilts upwards due to design)

I installed this in my wife's Jeep Cherokee because the clock would display a random time when you turned on the ignition and she wanted to listen to her music. The stock radio was just a radio, it was AM or FM that's it. So after I put a new Pioneer DEH-X4600BT in my truck I decided she should have a new radio as well. The MVH-X360 and the X4600 differ only in the fact that the X4600 has a CD player and is four channel the X360 doesn't have the CD and is two channel. My truck has four speakers and the Jeep has two. In my research I wanted to know the difference between two and four channel and it said that you give up the fader, however when setting up the X3600 there's is a fader in the audio setup, and the radio wire harness has wires for all four speakers, so I'm still a little confused about the difference, I'll have to do a little more research. You can read my other review for the DEH-X4600BT about purchasing from Crutchfield's and the how easy the units are to use.

Pros: USB, AUX input, Easy to use controls

    Cons:
