Pioneer FH-X520UI

Overview

Our take on the Pioneer FH-X520UI

Go big, go bold

Fill the 4" tall dash opening in your car with Pioneer's FH-X520UI CD receiver. This striking receiver covers the space with a multi-color display that lets you choose from thousands of colors — you can even set up one color for the display and another for the buttons. For some extra visual excitement, MIXTRAX syncs the audio from many of your sources, adding transitions between songs along with a light show that pulses and changes color with the beat of the music — like cruising down the road with your own personal DJ on board. (Need Bluetooth? Check out Pioneer's FH-X720BT CD receiver.)

Pioneer FH-X520UI

Customize the display and button colors to match your car.

Plenty of music and media options

Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input, and you'll be able to control your music files and playlists. If you're a Pandora® fan, you'll have control of your favorite stations from the receiver when your iPhone's connected, plus you can create stations on the fly. You can also use the USB input to tap into the music files stored on many Android devices, while the front aux input handles just about any other audio source. If you can't live without CDs, you'll enjoy stellar playback of your store-bought and home-burned discs.

You shape the sound

Pioneer's potent MOSFET amplifier delivers plenty of power, and you can use the 5-band EQ to shape the sound for your vehicle. You can also switch quickly between seven preset equalizer curves to get the sound you're looking for during your drive. The two pairs of preamp outputs make it easier to add external amplifiers or a powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Everyone on the Crutchfield team that I dealt with was very professional took their time explaining things to me and what made me very comfortable I would definitely deal with Crutchfield again

Bought this unit to replace factory unit in my 2013 Ford F150. Order the mounting brackets, wiring harness and antenna adapter package that came free with this unit which made it a breeze to install. Looks and sounds great. Have not had any problems.

Extremely dim illumination. You cannot see the time display if you are driving in the daylight. I wish I would not have purchased this unit. Don't you make the same mistake. Pioneer said they have had complaints about the dim illumination. Wished they would have included that info.

Beyond expectations, sound and ease of use stand out the most. Used with factory speakers and thought would most likely need to upgrade but this units ability and unlimited options to be adjusted made it sound like a whole new system.

Pros: Price, sound reproduction and ease of operation.

Cons: None I can think of !

Fits the bill for my Trans Am. Customer Service Team Member Zeke answered all of my questions promptly and got the correct adapter to retain my steering wheel controls. I also like the ability to customize the display so that I can match my original gauge lighting.

Pros: Much better sound quality than the factory Monsoon stereo provided. It is now much louder with less distortion using the same speakers.

Cons: Not all steering wheel controls work. I could have done something incorrectly during the install but have not worried with attempting to fix it. Volume and track selection work and that was all I really wanted anyhow.

I just installed this in my fiance's 2005 Honda CR-V EX. We both love the mixtrax mode, and being able to customize the display color, she loves the bright pink i like matching it the orange of the factory lights, I was very surprised at how light this unit is, and the majority of the inside of the unit is empty. I went with this head unit because my brother has one of these in his 4runner, we both like the double Din size, and with the trim piece installed it fits very well into the dash opening. The front USB port is perfect, and the little door that covers it is very cool too!.

Pros: immediate improvement in sound quality over stock, easy to set up, wide range of color options for display, great iPhone compatibility and charging.

Cons: none of the screws that came with unit that are used to mount the factory deck brackets to the aftermarket head unit really fit flush or well, but they can't be seen and it only bothers my OCD nature.

Great price and upgrade from the factory head unit. It was easy to install in my Toyota p/u using the two-piece, screw wire connectors. The supplied trimming for around the unit fit very well and looks good. Very well worth the price. Great shipping too. I received everything the next day after placing the order.

The headunit is good for increasing sound quality, which is exactly what I got it for. However, the only thing keeping this from being a five star rating, is that it makes my subwoofer sound like trash. Whatever it did, my subwoofer now only sounds out really low notes; it resembles that of thunder. I don't exactly want to listen to a low rumble in the back of every song. I'm sure it's user error that's done it, but I have no idea how to fix it. Now I can't listen to music without an obnoxiously loud bass in the background. My old headunit allowed me to adjust the bass how I please; this one has settings for the bass but it won't fix the trashy sound it's reduced my subwoofer to. I'm not sure what I did wrong with it, but it certainly does not sound how it used to. Other than it nullifying my $400 subwoofer, the sound quality is nicer in my car and the headunit has a cool display. If there is any sunlight, however, you will not be able to read the display.

Pros: Good sound quality Cool display

Cons: Expensive Will have to heavily modify the settings if you have a subwoofer Cannot see the display at all if there is any light outside

I purchased this unit to replace my stock unit which went out on me. It was easy to install with the recommended wiring harness. I would recommend purchasing wiring connectors for a better install. I just used electrical tape. It took me 2 hours in total for my Toyota Yaris.

    Pros: Easy to use

Cons: No dedicated on/off button. Cannot keep led lighting to just 1 color mode.

The site recommended all the right stuff to install this unit into my 2006 GMC Sierra with the 7 Speaker Bose speaker system. Fairly easy install once I got the harnesses attached and heat shrink on the wires. Maintained all the functionality (+ steering wheel controls) I had before plus added all the features my 17 year old son wanted (Blue tooth, iPod interface, etc). Tech support was quick to answer my only question. About 2 weeks in, unit started doing radio station searches at random times. Called Tech support and they had a new unit in the mail with a return shipping label that day. Customer service that is top-notch which is unusual in today's world!

Pros: Clean and Easy install. Cool functions. Great Price and Value!

Cons: Interior dash mods were not exactly in line with the instructions. I had to cut material from the lower area in the back of the mounting well vice the top (per the instructions.

This thing sounds great, compared to the OEM Ford radio it replaced. The fit in the dash was good, and the trim made the job look professional. The buttons and controls left me underwhelmed. Controls not as simple and intuitive as the old Ford stereo it replaced. Too easy to end up in the menu, while trying to switch modes (say radio to cd). Lighting colors and brightness can display many variations, which is a nice feature.

Pros: Good sound, both radio and cd player Lighting and colors offer many user variations Fit well in the dash

Cons: Buttons and controls not found to be intuitive or well placed Difficult to read buttons and display, especially in bright light

First I'd like to say the Reciever really made my 05 Scion tC come alive with factory door speakers and a kicker 400.1 amp complemented by a 10" JL w0 series subwoofer. Has many display color options to pick from to match your dash colors. My only complaint is the brightness during days of decent sunlight, you cannot see anything on the screen and I'm assuming it may have to do with the curvature of the screen reason I rated it 4 stars more like 4.5. Besides the sun glare/ brightness issue this is a solid radio and I'm sure would be phenomenal with I decent set of components.. Pioneer has never let me down and is actually the only stereo I will purchase for my vehicles.

Upside: All around, I love it and I made the right choice. This stereo sounds great and is easy to use. I use it with my iPhone primarily and have had no issues at all. It sounds great and was reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this product. Downside: I rated the "Coolness Factor" at 3 stars because 1) I think it's an unnecessary and irrelevant category. 2) If coolness is based on the level of crazy multi color lights on the display, I would rate it 3 stars. I can't stand the crazy light thing. I believe my stock stereo looks cooler because it isn't trying so hard. What is with the lights? It's like these stereos with their lights are the definition of cool from a guy wearing shades indoors at night with a flipped up fluorescent polo shirt from the 80's. So no, it's not cool unless you are that guy. Personally, I think a stereo that looks stock and behaves aftermarket is rockstar level sexy. At this price point though, this is the most understated appearance I could find with the options I wanted. All is not lost here (that is why I give it 3 stars and not 0) because the lights can be adjusted to glow one color as explained by a Customer Service guy. I gave the build quality 4 stars because of the installation kit doesn't work with all cars. I will leave a full review on the kit itself. All in all: I will use Crutchfield for as long as they are around. Fantastic website and the best customer service of any company I have ever worked with.

Pros: Great product, ease of use, compatible with my needs, great value, would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade.

Cons: Lights are a little over the top. The installation brackets are NOT universal as described. It may work fine for other cars but I have a 2006 Ford Focus ZX3 and they didn't work for me. I ended up having to snap off large pieces of the bracket just to get it to fit in the opening properly. It is still slightly crooked because clearly the brackets provided do not work. I'm not going to fuss about it and re-install though because I can't be bothered. I made it work but buyer beware.

This is a pretty amazing radio for the cost point. It has all the bells and whistles - cd, aux imput, Ipod control, USB, Bluetooth, etc. The sound quality is great and the changing color display is cool. The negatives about the radio are the controls. Moving through the menus to adjust brightness, EQ settings, effects, and whatever else are cumbersome at best and downright maddening at worst. Pioneer would have done well to simplify the menu and the common adjustments. Aside from that, the radio is a real bargin. Lots of bang for your buck.

Pros: Great sound lots of options great price

Cons: The design of the menus is idiotic

Great improvement in quality of sound through the stock speakers. Easy to install given that all required adapters were part of an install package, some items free or at a considerable discount. Had to cut a bracket in the rear, to fit the added depth of the unit on a Chevy Cobalt 2006 LS

Pros: Price is low and quality is great, with a 64gb USB it can pretty much handle all my songs. Love the color choices, I left it on Amber.

    Cons: None

Easy install.Changing light pattern is really good not to bright as some have said also has dimmer switch on face plate. DJ mix option is only available with ipod usb device and is kinda like a scan for music, DJ mix works better with pop/hip hop style music kinda muddled with classic rock but still cool with the light show.overall very happy.

Pros: Easy install with all that Crutchfield sends with your purchase. I have a Mach 460 Ford sound system and read tons of complaints about trying to hook up an aftermarket head unit but i had no problems.

Cons: Getting the sound settings(loudness, Bass Boost,Hertz, ...)adjusted takes some trial and error. Could be because of the stock speaker set up but once it is adjusted sounds great even with top down.

Some of the buttons are small, but you get used to them. Takes a while to find out how to use all of the features it comes with. Totally worth the buy though. I was able to install this myself in about an hour . (Not including wire crimping) If you're looking to buy this radio or any other product for your car, this truly is the place to come. CD Player in my factory unit broke so was looking for an inexpensive replacement. This unit lived up to all the outstanding reviews. For my particular vehicle there were three different harness possibilities. Of course mine didn't match harness sent with my order. One call to customer service and correct harness was received next day. Installation was relatively simple, had to trim the dash opening, but harness made install a plug and play. Sound quality is excellent. Absolutely love the USB port. Only rated coolness factor a 3 because it's irrelevant to me.

Pros: Instructions made the install a bit easier, great sound quality. Everything I expected and more, great overall buy. Especially since it came with wiring harness for my vehicle and a install kit.

Fantastic upgrade over the factory CD changer in my Mazda MPV, it has more than enough power for the factory speakers and provides switching for the factory subwoofer. The controls are easy to use, my only complaint is that some of the colors are very hard to see in daylight. I have selected my own custom color, but its still dim in full daylight.

Pros: easy to install, easy to use, great sound, a lot of bang for the buck...

For the money you cant go wrong. The EQ and sound shaping abilities of this unit far exceed anything in this price range. I have it hooked up to the S/O M-4075 running 2 Kicker CS693 6X9 in the doors and a S/O M2-8SVC 8" sub behind the drivers seat of my 2014 Silverado standard cab. I did a lot of research before making the decision to buy this product. I was looking for the best sound and aesthetic features for my buck without paying for a bunch of bells and whistles I wasn't going to use. I also wanted something to replace a factory stereo that I could install myself without any unexpected surprises or expenses.

Pros: Installation was easier than I imagined using the instructions provided to me. The flashing multi colors weren't quite my thing, so I was pleased to find I could choose the color I wanted and customize from there. Using the 5 band equalizer I was able to tailor the quality sound to get those crisp sharp highs to shine perfectly within those smooth deep lows.

Cons: I only found one feature that made me feel more could be done to improve. The mix feature promises the ability to give you a track presentation like that of a club or DJ. I expected the songs on my playlist to transition into one another smoothly taking into consideration beats per minute like on some DJ apps. Instead the track you are listening to is interrupted using a sound effect and the next track starts abruptly say 30 seconds in by another sound effect.

    Cons: none.

This is a solid and well functioning head unit for a great price. It has a built-in mosfet amplifier which works well to power most after market speakers. It has two pairs of rca preamp outputs, which is nice if you are adding an amp and sub to your system. Overall a good double din stereo receiver.

Pros: Preamp outputs. Mosfet amp. Great price. Double din. Slick looks.

Cons: No dedicated subwoofer preamp output. No hd radio.

I bought this head unit to replace my Mach 1000 in my 04 GT. It was basically a color match plug and play. My father and I got this installed in about 30 minutes (I had to go find wirenuts) and turned it on. The most majestic of all melodies filled my ears when I heard the amazing quality bursting forth from my two 10's in the back. Never before had I heard such range of bass. This is a beautiful replacement for the crappy Mach 1000 6 CD Changer.

Pros: AUX, USB, Sub Control, Color Variety, Bass Boost, Easy Installation

    Cons: Kinda hard to program

My Pioneer receiver was received very quickly and was a fairly easy install. I like that Crutchfield includes any extras needed for installation at no extra charge. I haven't had it that long, but I'm very pleased with the look and sound so far.

Pros: Looks & sounds good. Easy installation.

    Cons: None, so far.

Overall, a good product. Installation was easy. I have never installed an after market stereo. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Sound is good. I like the color selection for the display.

Pros: Good price especially for a student on a budget. Looks great in the car. Several complements on sound/looks.

Cons: The flimsy GM dash kit. But that is a separate review. Would not prevent me from recommending the stereo - I had to ask my dad to help.

If you are not looking for a lot of features (bluetooth, NAV, DVD, etc.) this is a great product. Used this as a factory radio replacement due to a non-working CD. Couldn't be happier with the upgrade. More power than the factory radio - makes the upgraded speakers sound really good, plus now have iPhone and iPod functionality. Can stream Spotify and Pandora through the iPhone. Other reviews have talked about display being either too bright or too dim. I believe the bigger problem is the glossy surface on the radio which makes it difficult to read during daylight hours. May look into a matte finish cling film to see if that helps.

Pros: Good sound, great value. Crutchfield installation kit is a huge bonus! Easy to install and wire.

    Cons:

Pros: Ease of install and proper fit in dash

Cons: Will take a little time to figure out all the features with this radio. But I guess for a negative that is not too bad
