Pioneer DEH-X5500HD

HD Radio — enjoy the difference

If you listen to a lot of radio, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of the HD Radio tuner that's built into this car stereo. The free broadcasts of your local HD Radio station are like regular radio, but with improved sound quality — FM broadcasts are near CD-quality, while AM is as clear as regular FM. And many stations, particularly public radio, broadcast extra channels of programming, so you can easily switch between news, music, or other alternative programming.

MIXTRAX livens up your music

Pioneer's MIXTRAX feature complements this receiver's bright display with its variable-color illumination. Turn it on, and it adds a light show to your favorite playlists as the display pulses in time with your music, and it inserts transitions and cool effects between songs, keeping the energy high while you're cranking the tunes.

Great sound at the heart of it all

The DEH-X5500BT carries on the tradition of solid Pioneer sound with a powerful internal amp that leaves most car audio factory systems in the dust. You'll also enjoy a 5-band equalizer for tone control, plus Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever to perk up the sound quality of compressed music files. If you're looking to build a bigger system, hook up amps to the two pairs of preamp outputs to get things really rocking — a suite of sound controls will tailor the output of the receiver to your amps.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Great product exactly what I wanted and more.

Bought this to upgrade from a factory 2003 Ford F250 CD/Tape player. This review is based upon this player, no amp, and factory speakers. If you've read the spec sheet on this player you can see you're getting a lot for what you pay. I can remember when a player like this would cost twice what this one does. Would I buy it again? Yes. For the money this unit is a steal.

Pros: Sound amplification - noticeable sound difference compared to factory player Equalizer - offers a wide array of sound structuring as there are several presets to choose from or you can customize yourself. Very versatile. Bass boost - nice addition to the equalizer; adds more 'depth' to the overall sound of the bass Nice clear display Remote - this is a nice addition as the buttons on the unit are a bit small to mess around while driving USB player - one of the main reasons I bought the unit

Cons: Cons: Tiny buttons on player Quite a few options - I hate to call this a con, but some people may find it a bit daunting to learn all the functions of this player. I think it is more of a lack of detail in the manual. However, you can find videos online of better explanations for the different options.

Has a lot of functionality but have only have one function button with a long menu to get to them. A pain especially if driving. Likewise with getting station info. Most radios I have used give the full song title and artist and station. This only displays one or the other and not enough of the title so I just leave it on station frequency.

    Pros: Inexpensive.

    Cons: See review for cons.

Always buy through crutchfield. I just got my first car and wanted to replace my stereo so I looked here and found this pioneer. The next day I went to a big box store and bought the same model stereo there, bad idea, the stereo was cheaper but instillation gear was 30 bucks. Crutchfield would send all the install stuff free when you by crutchfield and their tech service is superb. My dad bought his stereo through crutchfield and they helped make the order. If you are deciding between pioneer, alpine, and kenwood go pioneer. Pioneer has the best value and the mix feature is awesome. Dad went with a kenwood for his truck and now that my parents have seen my stereo my mom wonders why my dad went kenwood instead of pioneer. They wish the kenwood had as many illumination options as mine and the mix. Untop of all the extra colors and features the pioneer is so much easier to control with so much more power. The pioneer is a 4 channel 50 watt putting out plenty of power for your car speakers. I will never by a stereo not made by pioneer.

Pros: Colors, The mix, Power, Easy to use, Affordable, High quality

Cons: None I wouldn't trade my stereo for any other one.

Seems to be a fantastic unit, well built and lots of fun features. It definitely takes some reading and re-reading of the manual to figure out how to use some of the features as it isn't overly intuitive. That said, once you take the time to learn the interface, it's a blast.

    Pros: multi-color interface, iphone/pandora interface

I simply can't figure out how to work this unit to my satisfaction. The instructions don't explain the purpose of most functions and getting the sound quality the way I'd like requires a PHD in electronic engineering! HELP! Furthermore, the buttons are way too small to be useful!

Pros: Good price, nice looking product.

Cons: Nearly impossible to figure out how to operate by one's self. The owners manual is useless too!

Great deck, so great in fact that I have it installed in both of my cars. Full of features, including the Mixtrack which was fun for about 5 minutes. HD radio is decent, but I mainly use it for the USB front input... got a thumbdrive loaded with music.

Pros: Adjustable display colors, ease of use.

Cons: Using the shuffle play mode with thousands of songs can be interesting... sometimes I might hear the same song more than once in an hour. Also, if you are skipping through songs and you hear your most favorite song ever and you accidentally skip over it, game over. You can't go back while in shuffle mode.

I ordered this CD receiver to replace the factory unit in my 2002 Saturn SL2 tat had begun speaking to me (e.g., doing whatever it wanted when I tried to make a selection). It has more options than I needed, and fit very well into the car. The multiple color LED options made it easy to 'match' the look of my car also. In addition, it was easy to install with the Crutchfield Master instructions. My 11 year old son did the installation. His first.

The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD I just bought and installed is a fine replacement that gives me the features I wanted: HD Radio, CD player that will play most all professional and home burned CDs, Aux input, and USB input. Installation on my 2007 Focus was easy once I figured out there were a couple of options and some of the install parts were not needed depending on the intall. Operation is OK, but the small buttons and interface could be better. It is still a learning experience. But it lets me plug in my Kindle fire to play music, put music and audio books on either the Kindle or the thumb drive, and play my CDs. Other than the small myriad of buttons and less than fool proof interface, I have found the FM reception is not the best. The stock Ford radio did better.

Pros: Easy install. Good value for what you pay. The features I was looking for.

Cons: Small user interface buttons and mediocre user interface. Keep the manual handy until you are fully versant in it's use and features. FM reception is not stellar.

After extensive research, I settled on this Pioneer model and was it a great choice. Very please with the sound quality, the features (IE: Apple direct connect, 3mm jack to name two), and the ease of installation. I put this in my 1996 Camaro and Crutchfield had the instructions, installation parts, to perfection. Very easy to understand these installation instructions. Took me about 30 minutes.. Back to the radio, it is very cool looking, plenty of color options for the display. One other common "con" in reviews I would agree with - it is somewhat difficult to understand the operation manual and to implement the changes, however, I think a lot of that is just getting used to it, as we all know, when you get a new phone, computer, or anything, it takes a little getting used to. THIS UNIT IS A GREAT DEAL!

Pros: Many features, ease of installation, great sounding unit.

Cons: Operation manual is difficult to understand, making adjustments is a little trying at times.

After much hemming and hawing, I finally decided to replace the factory cassette head-unit in my '95 BMW 318i convertible. Did quite a bit of research, narrowed down my choices to some pretty basic "must-haves" such as HD, USB and Aux ports, and also the ability to match display/button colors to my interior displays. The unit was pretty easy to install;. I had a couple issues with a mystery blue wire that when not connected resulted in no am radio reception, but fm was fine. A quick call to Crutchfield tech support quickly resolved the issue of the mystery blue wire which fixed the am radio problem. The unit itself is pretty nice. Lots of options and controls. Personally I don't think it's all that complicated. It took me 15 minutes of just playing with the options to get a good handle on the operation. The HD-FM / Standard FM pulls great signals. This with only a stock 18" flex antenna on the rear fender. I rarely have fade and it switches seamlessly between regular and HD. The display is really hard to read during the day. Not because the display is too dim, but the face of this unit is ultra high-gloss that reflects everything around. The only other negative that I would agree with is the user manual. It is poor-quality print and a very small font. It is pointless to even include it. Do yourself a favor and go to the Pioneer site and print out your own enlarged version. I increased the print-size to 150% just to make it look normal! Otherwise a nice unit.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to use, HD Radio reception, connectivity, variable light and button colors

Cons: High-gloss face too reflective. Manual nearly impossible to read.

I was looking for a good radio for my 06 Ford Ranger, when I purchased it, it still had a tape deck. I had 4 Kenwood FKC-C6894 6X8's already in the truck. I was surprised at how much better those speaker sounded with this deck. For a little over $100 I was not expecting much, but it was night and day. So glad I upgraded, it sounds great, even at higher levels. This deck has some nice features like the USB and front input and the option on screen colors is great. This unit is solid and worth every penny. Crutchfield is the only place to get your next stereo, they send you everything you need and the install was simple and fast.

Pros: Great power and sound, clear even at high volume levels and has a nice little remote.

I would say this radio is an excellent choice on a budget which exceeded my expectations based on price. I installed this radio in a 2001 Ford F-150 which had another aftermarket radio already. The sounds was better than expected even with the factory speakers, once I replace the speakers with Pioneer TS-G6844R's it was better yet. The "Coolness Factor" has to be all the different colors you can choose from. The build quality feels solid.

Pros: Sounds is better than expected from a value priced radio.

Cons: Buttons could be a bit larger. for seek/scan and station presets.

It does everything i expected and then some. There was no wiring diagram with it but if you know how to match colors then you should be ok. Figuring out how to set it up correctly for your sound system is important and will work great when you figure it out. Great radio for the money. Great power for good speakers so no need to buy a jvc just because it has more rms watts.

    Pros: price

Cons: hard to figure out what frequency to set things at, you just have to try different things. Better Instruction manual and wiring diagram would help.

The primary reason I replaced the factory unit in my 2006 Ford Freestyle was iPod/iPhone integration, allowing me to have my full music collection instead of just a few CD's on hand. I had to make one call to support to confirm wiring for the factory subwoofer, but otherwise installation was pretty straight-forward. I'm very happy with the sound quality for all types of listening (radio, CD, aux, iPod inputs). My teenage son asked if we could swap stereos from the 2001 Taurus he drives. After explaining that there is no standard plug-and-play interface for car stereo wiring, he understood why that wouldn't work. He really likes the bass that this unit delivers as well as the variable color illumination, HD radio sound quality and the "Christmas light-like" funkiness of the mixtrax function. The only complaint I have is the instruction manual. The font is very small for my middle-aged eyes and I would appreciate a description of each of the functions. Don't just tell me how to change the setting, include a sentence on why I would want to (for example, why would I want to change the "Slope level" for the subwoofer?). I also wish there was an indicator light when the radio is operating in HD mode. These aren't major issues. Overall, I'm very happy with the sound quality and value of this unit.

Pros: Sound quality, HD radio, Crutchfield telephone support, variable illumination

    Cons: Instruction manual

I researched several stereos for my Jeep YJ and I was originally focusing in on an Alpine unit, but then I read the reviews on this Pioneer unit and I was pretty impressed. After comparing several things between the Alpine and the Pioneer I settled on the Pioneer, primarily because of the reviews, price and HD radio feature. I am so glad I purchased the Pioneer. It was very easy to install due to the straightforward wiring and excellent instructions provided by Crutchfield. Once I had it wired up I fired it up and what a difference from the OEM stereo! It sounds so much better. The YJ has tiny 4" speakers to begin with but the Pioneer really helps them sound much better. I never had HD radio before, but it really does sound much better than regular analog stations. The USB, aux and Pandora functions are also very cool. The USB port allows me to play and charge my iPod simultaneously (NOTE: The iPod sounds better through the USB port than the aux port). Overall, a great unit and major upgrade from the factory unit. As a final note I wanted to let everyone know that I bought this Pioneer stereo through Crutchfield's online outlet store as a "Scratch & Dent" item for a significant savings. Scratch & dent items are noted on the website to have "minor" cosmetic blemishes, but let me tell you that my Pioneer looked like a brand new unit. I was expecting to find the face/display scratched or something like that but I couldn't find any damage whatsoever. Thank you Crutchfield!

Pros: Price - Bang-for-the-Buck Sound quality HD radio USB port Pandora feature Multi-color display with Mixtrax

Cons: System menus Difficult to program, however, once you do get it programmed it sounds great!

Outstanding unit. The factory unit in my mom's 2003 Nissan Sentra crapped out on her some time ago. At first the CD motor burned out and then after awhile the radio was shot as well. After shopping around online and in brick-n-mortars I settled on this head unit, mostly because of the reviews I read here at Crutchfield. I feel compelled to throw my hat in the ring along with the others. I have 0 experience with car stereos and this was my first ever attempt installing one. Was basically plug-and-play. Took about 30 minutes from start to finish. The receiver itself is truly awesome. The sound quality is outstanding. I can't get over how the 10 year old factory speakers on the basic audio package thump in her little car. LoL! I'm seriously considering getting something in this line for my truck. The illumantion color variety is large and this, along with the USB port were the main reasons I settled on this head unit as they were features that my mom seemed most interested in when we poked around in Best Buy. I still don't know what this mixtrax thing is... Limited HD radio stations in the area where she lives but on a drive to Kansas City noticed about 25-30 stations picked up. Sound quality on these HD stations is great. Really sounds like a CD. Anyway, easy to install, easy to setup, sounds awesome, cool display color options. Couldn't have been happier with the value and quality of this product... oh, and my mom likes it too... =]

Pros: Easy to install, sounds awesome, illumination options are "cool", awesome value

Cons: As with most aftermarket head units I've looked at, the buttons are small and can be a bit of a pain to use while driving. However, the remote remedies this issue for the most part, allowing for easier adjustments while driving.

The stock CD changer finally died after 9 years and with much consideration, I chose the DEH-X5500HD as the replacement. Crutchfield sales and tech people were exemplar and well appreciated for their efforts. Installation went smoothly enough, although this was no simple plug and play proposition. I wanted to utilize the factory amp and speakers, so I had to solder in about a dozen wires to make it happen. I wished I had a better schematic, but with 10 minutes of patient help from a Crutchfield techy, we got her done. Sounds great. Added new life to a favorite truck.

Pros: This HU is packed full of features, several I'll never use, many features to keep me busy learning how to setup and use.

Cons: The mounting bracket wasn't a factory fit... and the wiring diagram left much to be desired. If this Pioneer lasts half as long as the stock HU, it'll be money well spent.

Purchased the Pioneer X5500HD to upgrade my factory radio which had degraded to the point of a single speaker. It was time. The sound on the Pioneer is great, really crisp and clear, and was like hearing the music for the first time again! Install was pretty fast: 2.5 hours from start to finish. That said, the controls/menu functionality are along the lines of garbage, in my opinion. I'm definitely no stranger to tech; I read the manual 3 times in an attempt to try and control the illumination display, figure out the difference between "BLEND" and "HD" and why both have to be on. I'm also having a son-of-gun of a time trying to tune into HD radio, another reason I purchased this model (Dallas has several around the area). At the end of the day, there does not seem to be a way to make the illumination panel STOP rotating through a bunch of different colors (none that I've found), so get ready for a disco experience. Other than that, sound is great, great value, and it's manufactured well. I would have given this 4-out-of-5 Stars, but the controls/menu function made for a dismal, awful experience. I pray to God I never have to disconnect the negative terminal again, so I don't have to go through set up.

Pros: awesome sound from factory radio upgrade, makes factory speakers sound like a rockstar, HD Radio

Cons: controls/menu functionality is the worst. illumination is a bit techo/disco for my liking, I would like one solid color

I installed this in a 97 Lincoln Town Car. It's not exactly what I was looking for and knowing what I know now, I would probably have purchased a different unit. However, that being said, the unit works well and I'm not upset with it and would recommend it to others. After quickly browsing the manual I was able to navigate through the menus, set the clock, adjust the equalizer etc. After only owning it a short time I was able to do this be second nature. One of the easier to use units I've purchased. It has variable color display presets. Custom tweaking of the colors or brightness would have been nice. Hey it also has a 5-band EQ. Very nice! The button lighting was too bright at night. The dimmer function is almost useless as it barely dims the light. Perhaps if the stereo was mounted in a lower position it wouldn't be as much of a problem. Quite frankly is dangerous to drive in the country at night with the stereo lights that bright. I don't think it would be possible to see deer, or other obstacles that enter the road from the right side. I actually have to hang something in front of the knob so as to reduce the glare. The display lighting doesn't have enough contrast with the background when using most of the available colors. Some where acceptable but none were great.

Pros: Value. Ease of use. Variable color display. Remote Control

Cons: Button lighting too bright. Display lighting too low of contrast. Dim function pathetic.

Very easy to use, and works perfectly in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler, and with the adapter it looks like it was meant to be there. It was easy to install as well as it is easy to program... Plus the LEDs look awesome!

Just installed this today. Getting it to fit properly inside the mount was a little frustrating, and it looks like I have some minor tweaking to do after I pop off the dash cover again. Sound quality is great, especially on FM radio. My old stock GM radio would be static-y all the time, very minor but noticeable. Lot's better now with this one. 2000 Chevy Blazer

Pros: Really cool look, love the illumination and HD radio capabilities. I was surprised to see how many HD stations there are that I never knew about. Sound quality on regular FM stations is excellent too.

Cons: Feels kind of cheap, which sucks because I paid this much for it. I mean, I'm not going to be throwing it around like a football but for the price it could be a little sturdier. Not enough to dock it down to a 3 star.

Pros: Aux port USB port Changes colors Loud Bass can go high Easy to control Not a lot of money for a good radio

Cons: No I need to spend more money on some Better speakers because this radio is so good.

Pros: Easy to use sounds great

Cons: The size was a little to wide truck trim had to be slightly modified

Freaking awesome radio. I had a Panasonic radio before and a friend suggested I get the Pioneer because Pioneers are the top car stereo quality brand. I said ok let me try it out and man am I glad I did. I have infiniti speakers installed with the dynamat and when I say my radio kicks it KICKS! and I don't even have an amp. The right speakers are important!!! If you don't have the right speakers you won't enjoy the radio. I am so happy with how the radio works and the color schemes are cool to play with. I strongly recommend this radio. You won't go wrong. BIG UP Crutchfield for their great customer service and their product offerings!!! Yuh Dun Know!!!

Pros: Powerful Head unit even without an amp.

    Cons: None

Easy to install. Ipod works great with this unit and it even charges it. But buttons are small and really hard to adjust while driving.

Pros: everything was there for installation and was in and working in less than 30 minutes

Cons: Hard to adjust while driving. Radio controls very small and remote should help for passenger

    Pioneer does it again.

Works great it's a very sturdy build and I mean it I had my aux cable plugged into my phone to the stereo and got out of my car and rippe it out it broke the aux cable but did nothing to the stereo. Great for subs and just regular speakers.

Pros: Sturdy, plenty of color options, sound quality is great.

Cons: Buttons are a tad small and takes a little while to get use to all the feature but what new item doesn't

I've been using this receiver/CD for a few months now. I can not believe how much better this radio sounds compared to the OEM unit. I have a hard time keeping the volume low enough to not damage ears! Installation was a breeze. Instructions on which configuration of the bezels to use, weren't very clear. Most of the time I use the USB input with a new "mini" flash drive.

Pros: Easy to use once you learn the menu system. Awesome sound quality.

Cons: From drivers seat, hard to read the left side of display with fingers on the knob.

Finally got it installed. Now I am a PRO. Any questions feel free to ask if you have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. By the way a big thanks to ALL of the tec support guys I called and asked questions with , BUT a really BIG thanks to Rudy x 5506. He thought past saying follow the instructions and said lets eliminate the wires you won't need, then the installation was so much easier. Thanks!!

Pros: Very cool colors. Easy set up. Sounds great. I only have standard speakes - but it still sounds much better than the OEM radio I had. And I now have a CD player. Great product for the price, better if I did not have to waste money on the GMOS thing.

Cons: It really SUCKS that you have to buy a GMOS to make the connections. Really?? I have nothing but the standard package. No onstar, no power this or that, a standard radio. I had to take an easy 2 plug from the OEM standard truck radio to a mind blowing array of wires just to hook this up. BAD.

I originally owned a Pioneer stereo which was great, but it was outdated and was missing features that I would like to have (like mp3 playing capabilities). I ordered this one and got it installed today and it makes my whole system sound 10x clearer, louder, and overall better. AND I'm able to play my iPod directly from it. I would recommend this stereo to anyone that is looking for a great quality stereo.

Pros: Makes speakers sound much clearer & looks great

    Cons:

Pioneer makes great head units and because my P8400BH was so good I got this model for my girlfriends '04 Camry. Install was very easy once I figured out one little hiccup. When installing the dash kit you do not need to use the metal brackets that the old stereo used. I thought this was the case because it snapped into the dash and looked like a support piece so I was trying to make it work. After some searching online and a quick call to Crutchfield support it was quickly determined they weren't required. The head unit unfortunately cannot be dimmed lower than the almost useless "on/off" setting. So even when ON it's annoying bright. I sent an email to Pioneer support asking why my older 8400 model can be dimmed to my liking yet this newer model can't. They simply said it wasn't a feature.

Pros: HD radio, USB connectivity, AUX input. Lots of useful features for a good price.

Cons: Display is too bright and the settings menu doesn't let you set it to your level.

    Excellent Choice
