Packed with features

The AVH-X8500BHS sits at the top of Pioneer's DVD receiver lineup for 2013, offering a 6.95" touchscreen display, customizable display colors, built-in Bluetooth®, and an HD Radio™ tuner, along with some cool new features that'll really enhance your car audio and video experience. Plus, you can remove the AVH-X8500BH's detachable face — an unusual feature on DVD receivers — when you leave the car, giving you peace of mind when you've parked in a questionable spot. Check out how these impressive features will improve your drive:

  •  Built-in Bluetooth: Enjoy hands-free calling with your compatible phone, plus the ability to wirelessly stream and control music from your phone or other Bluetooth devices.
  •  Built-in HD Radio™ tuner: You'll notice the impressive sonic advantages right away — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. You can tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, for more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets you save song info, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.
  • AppRadio Mode: With the addition of Pioneer's CD-IU201S cable, you can launch and control compatible iPhone apps from the face of your receiver, putting a variety of music, navigation, social media, and other apps at your command. You can learn more and see the latest compatible apps here.
  • iPhone 5 compatibility: You can use your iPhone 5 with this Pioneer, including AppRadio Mode and video transfer. You'll need to purchase a Pioneer cable kit , and get a free firmware update from Pioneer.
  • Optional satellite radio: Add a SiriusXM tuner and subscription for nationwide access to programming you can't get anywhere else — coast-to-coast reception is a huge plus if you travel constantly. And you'll never have to worry about data charges or coverage.
  • Advanced touchscreen controls: Touch Slide technology offers greater control of receiver functions. Want a new EQ curve? Just draw it on the screen with your finger and you've got it. And you can browse video files through thumbnail images — just touch them to check out a sneak preview.
  • Dual USB ports: Two ports on the receiver's rear panel add to your entertainment possibilities, and allow you to use one for a permanent connection.

AppRadioLIVE makes it easy

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

Roll with your music

The AVH-X8500BHS is built to play your music, no matter what medium you prefer.  You can connect your iPod® or iPhone® to one of the rear USB input and use the receiver's controls to access your playlists, while tools like Alphabet Search and Link Search help you find the song you want, fast. You can also play music files from many Android™ phones when your Android is plugged into the front-panel USB port — see the "Details" tab for more info on device compatibility.

If you're a fan of streaming Internet radio, connect your iPhone to the receiver with an optional cable and take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls. Or use the Bluetooth link to tap in via your Android device. And don't forget, you can also enjoy all your CDs, DVDs, discs full of MP3 or WMA music, plus SD cards and USB storage devices loaded with music.

Customizable display and excellent video performance

You can also change the receiver's appearance to match your dash by choosing from five display colors and 112 key panel illumination options. And when you're ready to get the party started, the MIXTRAX feature creates a DJ-like experience with content from your iPod, iPhone, or Android, adding special effects between songs and variable-color lighting that pulses with the beat of your music.

The receiver's 6.95" LCD screen plays DVDs and other video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. You can keep your passengers entertained by sending video from the receiver to a rear-seat screen — a huge bonus during long road trips. And since the AVH-8500BHS has dual-zone A/V capabilities, you can listen to a different source up front while a movie's on in the back. You'll be able to view video content from your iPod or IPhone with the addition of an optional cable. And you can play it safe when you throw it into reverse by plugging in a rear-view camera.

Advanced App Mode gives you touchscreen control over the apps in your phone.

Tune the sound to your taste

This Pioneer sports an 8-band equalizer for making your music sound perfect in your car, and you'll find an auto-equalization feature to tune your system (microphone required). Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever perks up the flat sound of compressed music by restoring high-frequency information.  If you're looking to build a killer system, three pairs of preamp outputs make it easier to connect external amplifiers

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Decent overall but some big annoyances

    Overall its great.

BIggest disappointment is the APPs are a joke, really don't use them. Most don't work well at all. Just leave your phone attached and use that instead. Its a LOT less hassle. Pioneer should not do things they cannot do well ... and the app radio is just a royal fail,IMHO.

I mostly use the USB2 using a USB thumb drive plugged into the back all the time. Its random isn't so random. That said, I use it all the time and just skip stuff a lot.

I WISH WISH WISH ... I could skip BACKWARDS while in random play on USB2. Its really annoying that you can't. I've also found it seems to be less than random, with certain songs showing up over and over again ... I even think the same order unless you do a database rebuild. Not sure how to force that rebuild. Originally it played same some every 20-30 songs ... then after the rebuild of database it was better.

Another annoyance is every time you plug in your iphone ... it starting playing the ipod ... thats super annoying and undesirable.

It charges the phone very well. Use Waze (GPS app) on the iphone all the time, audio comes across on stereo nicely.

I phone the build in phone capability very UNUSABLE. I have not been able to use the built in mic or hear it in my truck. Its basically worthless.

Do no waste your money buying any cord other than a USB to lightning cord --- you will regret it !! Nothing works with app radio or video. I even bought the video parking override thing ... not working

Pros: Detachable Faceplate Two USB connections (most others have one), one is capable of charging Pandora works pretty well Interface overall looks good Works well with steering wheel remove charges iphone backup camera capability works nice (did require tweaking system settings to work correctly)

Cons: USB lack of real random, lack of ability to skip backwards APP Radio sux Auto ipod when plugging in iphone super annoying

I have had this unit for 3 months now and the main reason i purchased it was to integrate it with my RAZR MAXX HD cell phone for digital quality music via the App Radio Program and full control of my cell phone into my 07 Acura RDX (the stereo is mounted in the console as i had to leave the factory Navigation system for the rest of information system to operate; at this time). I have Focal front and rear component speakers powered by a 400 watt kicker amp and an 10" Kicker compact RT sub woofer powered by a Kicker 800 watt amp. The App Radio program is useless in the "Out of the Box" state; i was very disappointed as that is the reason for the purchase of this unit. Thanks to a few individuals in these reviews that mentioned the ARLiberator app that would allow full control of my cell phone thru the 7" stereo display did i feel a glimmer of hope not all was lost. It took me a few hours of following on line videos however i was able to "Root" my phone, install the ARLiberator app and now have full use of my cell phone via the stereo. My only 2 issue so far is the sensitivity of the 7" display is not adjustable as when i try to scroll thru my Soundcloud playlist it has tendency to play the song i touch on the screen and there still is no access the equalizer (i currently have it flat and adjusted the HP and LP filters on my amp to tune the sound). I tried several apps however they cut more of the freq range than allow.

    Pros: 3 4v pre-outs

Cons: Factory App Radio program is useless IMO Cant access the equalizer or any audio adjustments when connected via the App Radio Mode Auto equilzer didnt adjust for bass very well; i am going to try a different mic.

Easy to install but Crutchfield sent an incorrect plug adapter and I was forced to buy locally rather than wait for correct connector to be delivered. Owner's manual print size too small for easy reading and I think requires an engineering degree to fully understand. Connection to Android device too complicated and costly. Learning curve too steep, IMHO.

Pros: Nice large touch screen with array of customization. Good sound production. Unit seems high quality.

    Cons: See above.

    Love it!

Really happy with the purchase of this radio. Was looking at several brands and based off other reviews I went with the pioneer over the JVC and Kenwood, mostly based off of features and reviews. Install was pretty simple really, called tech support a few times to make sure I had the right wires to connect into for camera reverse and the park brake. Tech support was awesome, very descriptive on which wires to use and where they were located. Pulled old radio out and connected all speaker wires up on the harness and the power and ground wires and that was pretty much it.

Pros: Button lights can change many different colors, screen lights look cool and have motion blurs. Lots of options, blue tooth works good and sounds good, my Iphone5 works great with it, pandora streams to radio flawlessly and it sounds great. Fit in my F150 like it was built for it.

Cons: I don't really have any cons but if I had to choose something to complain about I guess the buttons could be a bit bigger, but I'm really reaching to find something to complain about so.

I put this in my Vibe, mostly gain the backup camera and use GPS apps that will update without the price tag. The apps are glitchy and some still try to use the phone as well. I didn't buy a 7" screen to try to work with my phone when I'm driving. Bluetooth, etc. all function great. I like the radio controls much better on this over my JVC. My big pet peeve is the radio turns off as soon as you go into app mode and there is no option to run apps and the radio at the same time. This has to change.

    Pros: Radio controls

Cons: The radio automatically not functioning in app mode. GPS apps are glitchy.

Best stereo head unit I have owned. I liked it so mush I bought two! One for my daily driver (Ford Ranger) and one for my weekend toy (944)

Pros: Everything except navigation in one package. Cool equalizers and screen settings - easy to use. Bluetooth is great

Cons: Navigation is an extra unit - not built in. But for the cost this isn't a big deal. Cost of extra cables to connect the HDMI to cell phone.

I installed this on a 2011 Ram 1500. I had to make some serious modifications to the internal receiver mountings to fit this unit. This is not a fault of the unit at all, as Ram stock radios are specifically made to not fit double din after market radios, just a warning for future owners installing on a Ram. The unit itself is amazing! As a previous owner of Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, and Clarion, this unit surpasses them all. I've installed this with Sirius, subwoofer, and backup camera and all work flawlessly. My stock speakers not sound amazing. Loading tunes from the USB is super fast. Steering wheel controls work great with separate adapter (Crutchfield lists some recommendations) Blue tooth connectivity is a touch glitchy. Having Sirius, radio, CD/DVD, USB, Aux, and RGB, what more can you ask for!

Pros: Ease of use, bright to display, fast data transfer. Simple layout

Cons: No Bluray player (but I don't plan on watching a ton of movies on a 7" screen), blue tooth connectivity with my phone is a touch glitchy.

This is a great head unit! Have had this radio for about a month. App radio is the way to go and if you go a step further to root your phone and use ARliberator it is going to be even better! The multiple media playback options are great. Would've rated all 5's but there is sound quality loss when playing Pandora. Maybe it is something with my phone Samsung s4 I haven't figured out yet but it is there a difference. Also the picture color on the backup camera is off and cannot be fixed with altering the settings. Still exploring this as well.

Pros: Multiple play back options for media, good blue tooth and microphone features,

Cons: Can get rid of beep when buttons are pressed. Screen is harder to see in day light with sunroof open.

Absolutely LOVE this RADIO. Looks Great Sounds Great syncs with phone and Ipod as soon as I attach the face plate. Detachable Face was the selling factor for me. Love that you can turn off screen light for long trips yet continue to use the radio.

Pros: Detachable face, hooks up with steering wheel controls, can advance through songs while physically or Bluetooth connected to radio.

Cons: The Mute feature on steering wheel console won't mute, it goes through the presets instead.

Every pioneer deck that I buy has always improved the sound quality of any system I have had and this one did not disappoint even with the factory speakers. The detachable face is the main reason I got this one. The app radio is a bit disappointing but I'm sure I'll never use it. To use that and the Pandora feature or app radio feature on this radio you have to have the special cable that connects your phone to a HDMI cable. I just use the Bluetooth to connect.

Pros: Detachable face, sound quality, SD card reader and more things

Cons: You need a special cable for most of its features.

Awesome deck. I reviewed and auditioned over 10 units before pulling the trigger on the 8500. The Pioneer is packed full of features that other units make you pay more for. Once you factor in 8 band eq, hd radio, sd card+flash drive+i (anything) or android, dvd, 4v high volt output for amps, remote, blutooth and more, you will not find another deck at this price that compares. Period. Great sq. Connects seamlessly to my s4. Classy looks. I've owned over 20 decks and this one easily beats those costing 3 times as much. Getting used to the menus takes a day or 2, now it's like second nature. Installs easily with the great people at Crutchfield helping you if you get stumped.

Pros: Standard options. Sat radio, back up camera, and adapter for video on i os or android are the only extras I can think of. Superb value!

Cons: Menus will take a little bit to get used to. Acceptable because of all the options.

I got this receiver for my 2009 camry. I am someone who wants my music to sound good, I can't settle for less in sound department. Well I started my search for a good receiver with good number of features, awesome sound, big diaplay & not too heavy on the pocket. I always liked crutchfield thus started to search for a receiver. Searching, my eyes went on this model by pioneer & I instantly liked it. This unit has everything you would need in today's world for music & video. I also compared it with many other receivers but at the end this unit stood apart with the features it provided. It has usb, sd card, i pod connectivity, aux , bluetooth, HD radio, iphone & android phone connectivity (with proprietary cable from pioneer, which are stupid costly compared to their real use),plays DVD etc too. The only gripe is it does not have navigation, but hey at this price point you would not get a navigation receiver anyways.

Sound quality is very good, it changed the total sound stage in my car. It has many audio settings which you can adjust according to your preference. One of the cool thing which I liked is you can set the HPF for the front & rear speakers so that they dont play those low frequencies which are meant for a sub. Bluetooth works well & connects to my phone without any issues.

Steering controls will work with an adapter which is on crutchfield

Pros: + Cool looks + Very good sound quality + tones of features + good price point + Good extensibility + Detachable faceplate

Cons: + This is not a con for the receiver, but for the dash kit that crutchfield suppplies with it for 2009 camry. The unit has a motorized faceplate it slides out. After fitting, there is not enough clearance between the top edge of the face plate & the top edge of the bezel which prevents the opening of the face plate. It hits the top edge of the bezel while it tries to open & does not open. Had to adjust it to fit to open somehow. Got metra kit 95-8218S online & solved all my clearance issues

I've never spent this kind of money on a head unit before and I don't regret doing it at all. The biggest influence of buying this one in particular is that it's face is detachable. I'm only home on the weekends so theft was a concern. I don't really care for the soft case though.Fortunately I have a hard case for my 7" Rand McNally GPS so, I just use that instead. The case is inexpensive and I highly recommend buying one if you take the face off a lot. A costly stereo is worthless if you drop the face on the concrete. I can't comment on the app functions to much cause I have a Windows phone. But, I do have an iPad 2 hooked up to the stereo. I have SXM radio so, Pandora is not something I use. The sound quality is amazing. My setup is the following. Stock tweeters 1 pair of Rockford Fosgate 6.5" for the for doors. 1 pair of Rockford Fosgate 6x9's for the back dash 2 Rockford Fosgate P2 12" subs 1 Rockford Fosgate Punch amp bridged to 500 watts. It sounds so clean and hits hard. The HPF is awesome. No bass comes through my mids and highs at all. Considering I have all the speakers (Mids) hooked up to the head unit, it sounds very clean and loud. The Mixxtrax function is pretty cool. Really trips people out when the hear it for the first time. The DVD quality is just alright and the volume is kind of weak. Gotta really turn it up to hear it. But, I dont plan on watching movies on it so no big deal. This unit is well worth the money and I highly recommend it.

    Pros: Sound quality, detachable face.

    Cons: DVD volume is weak.

So, I've been a kenwood man for going on 20 years. But after so much of a headache with their Bluetooth functionality, it was time to move. This thing is gorgeous. When you add in sat radio, it's almost perfect. BT pairing was a snap, the screen is touch responsive, and if you follow all the tips out there in internet land, it's perfect as a display for maps from my iPhone. Interestingly enough, the audio characteristic is way better than my kenwood was. The only downside, the screen has a lot going on. It's a bit cluttered. Other than that, it's gorgeous. I've got it wired into a 2006 Mazda 3 with sat radio, a powered sub, backup camera, and a 240gb SSD connected via USB. If you're looking at this, and considering this head, I vote yes.

Pros: Ease of use, auto pairs with Bluetooth, hdmi input, huge touchscreen, fast power on.

Cons: Cluttered display, not as many visual options as I'd like. But not a deal breaker.

I had this installed in my 2012 Malibu and I love it, it looks factory and because it has more eq bands it sounds a lot better then the jvc I had before, I originally bought for it the touchscreen and dvd but plan on installing a back up camera, I haven't watched a dvd on it yet so I can not say anything about picture quality, I could have went with a lower priced model but I wanted to be able to remove the face if I parked in a questionable area, my Samsung galaxy 4s paired easily and it connects faster then my previous head unit and calls are very clear, it reads my usb flashdrive almost instantly, it would have been nice if the button color would match my interior dash lights but that's no big deal, I am still learning all the functions of this head unit but I have the basics down, this may be the last head unit I buy. p.s. thanks crutchfield, you guys are great

Pros: detachable face, sound quality and a lot of other features and connections .

Cons: button color dosent match my dash lights. ( if you call that a con)

Got this installed in my Dodge Charger. This is a very nice unit so many cool functions. First, the shipping came faster then the expected delivery date. Thanks crutchfield. I was going to get this professional installed but after he told me how much it was going to cost I decided to do it myself. I have no prior install skills but after some research I did it myself. Easy installation with the posi connectors and the crutchfield instruction sheet. This is my third unit from crutchfield I couldn't imagine ordering anywhere else.

The radio it's self is cool I was worried that I would have to cut the dash like most older 7in screens But this one does not have that problem it fit perfectly. The face detach is nice although I wish it would close once the car was shut off but you must keep the acc on for it to close all the way. The eq is easy to get to and I like that there is a 20hz and 40hz options. I wish the screen was a bit brighter but it still looks good and the back up camera looks a lot better on this then my Kenwood I had. If you have a android phone and plan on adding app mode I have 2 things to tell you first not as import but make sure you have enough room behind your radio a lot of bulky cords (this goes for ios users as well) the second is its pretty much useless at this time there is a free navigation app you can download but you can not use Google maps. You also have to download this ridiculous keyboard to use it on the screen otherwise you have to touch your phone keyboard and and to do 99.9% of the stuff on your phone. There is a way around it but it includes rooting your phone if it's not already and jumping though a few hoops. As far as ios users I'm not sure my buddy is going to buy the cables and try it out on his phone. And I will update once he does. Also you need to have the parking brake up to use app radio functions.

Pros: Looks clean Sounds great Face detach is nice (mostly) USB folders is nice setup Good picture

Cons: App radios mode needs to be in park to use The only con that I have right now is app radio.

This radio does it all. It has RCA's for Front, Rear and subwoofers. You can connect external video devices too. The overall features are fantastic for the price. Not really sure why you would opt for one that has navigation as this one you can stream from your phone(via bluetooth) with a navigation app and have it show on the screen. This is the best hands down Pioneer radio I've owned. I've owned about 5 top level Pioneers.

Pros: Controls for Pandora, Streaming with Bluetooth, movies(even AVI files, since it's a Divx player), Controls for Iphone. External USB connection, even has an access for SD cards. Connects to a PAC(Steering wheel controlling device) nicely. Very quick connection using bluetooth and very simple uploading contacts from your phone to radio. You can upload firmware and screensavers.

Cons: This is an HD radio, which isn't bad; but, the default blends analog and digital signals. Which causes a noticeable drop in volume between the 2 signals when it switches automatically. I figured out how to switch the radio to only use Analog. But it was trial and error. This was the only issue I found other than the sunlight washes out the screen sometimes(That's normal for these double din radios).

Coolness Factor is OK, but Pioneer missed by a mile with certain features of the interface. An example is the Bluetooth operation. With two phones paired, it takes too many levels to switch the primary phone, and the icon on the main screen does not show which is paired. There is plenty of room for two phone icons, and one could indicate primary phone. When the phone icon is pressed, the phone menu comes up in a smallish screen showing the primary paired phone, but no way to switch. You have to go down to the small setup gear, open another screen, and press another button. Ridiculous for the inconvenience alone. Another nit is the screen customization. It only lets you store one custom background from a jpg file on the SD card.??? SD card playback of music files is quirky, with some files not showing up at all, and not much guidance from Pioneer on that. Daylight viewing is not too bad, but could be much better. Pioneer missed by not letting you customize the night view with one background and the day view with another. White background/dark text would greatly improve daylight visibility, while black background with user-specified text color would improve nighttime glare. I use the Pioneer AH200 with my Galaxy SIII and it is buggy. It works most of the time but drains the battery on the phone since the head unit does not supply adequate power from its USB ports. The sound quality is good, the EQ is nice, and the unit is well built and fairly easy to use while driving.

Pros: Nice construction and finish. Buttons are on the small side but useable. The multi-band EQ is very nice and does the job. Sound adjustment for each source is very handy. Multiple options for music playback make this a very versatile unit. The faceplate can be set to a custom angle and always remembers that angle, but always closes when ignition key is removed.

Cons: Interface could be better and more intuitive. No way to remove unused feature icons from main screen. Screen color and text options could be better for visibility. Unit has a hard time with SD card music files, even the supported formats. Phone icons and menus need much improvement.

I received this unit and installed it without any trouble. The sound quality makes my factory speakers sound clearer than before. It fit well and looks very clean with the kit from Crutchfield. My wife was impressed by the screen's picture quality. I've had it about 1 week and had no issues. It's easy to install and configure. Bluetooth phone quality is good but the address book isn't as easy to navigate as my phones. (See Cons)

Pros: DVD quality Bluetooth to phone (android) is good even though it does not provide album art Pandora via HDMI to phone (android) provides album art HD radio provides album art for some stations Using HDMI to display phone's picture on unit (without touch)

Cons: The imported address book doesn't identify the number's name (Cell, Home) with the person's name when saved to favorites. If a person you call often is saved to your favorites, only the name of the person displays so you don't know which number of theirs you are dialing until you click on it. very limited apps in App Radio. No Google Navigation through phone unless rooted phone or use phone to display only. (no touch)

I bought this to install in my 2012 Camaro. I have an iPhone 5S running iOS7 as well as an iPod Nano which I planned to hook up to this unit. The unit sounds great, looks great, and almost perfect.

The unit is fully compatible with the iPhone 5S (do not waste money on the Pioneer adapter kit, it is not needed. All you need is your lightning cable that came with the phone.) The dual USB slots with the HDMI is very nice allowing me to have everything hooked up without having to unplug things. Now onto the AppRadio function. This was a little annoying. After toying around, I found out you need to change the Digital Output from "Others" to "iPhone AV" To do this, your bluetooth must be turned off, all things unplugged, and both home screens set to off. After doing this, i got the AppRadio to work with the Lightning to HDMI adapter ($35 at Best Buy). However, when you have this selected, you cannot play music straight from the iphone or any other connections unless you go through Bluetooth Audio or the actual app radio app.

Other than that, its a great unit.

Pros: Great Sound Great Customization Good amount of Hookups

    Cons: AppRadio needs some work

Very nice head unit. The double din instructions included by Crutchfield were perfect. Color and sound is excellent!

Pros: You can add your own background picture through an SD card (however, the unit will only hold 1 uploaded picture).

Cons: Not really a con, more of an issue with the owners manual. The instructions for the rearview camera are not very clear in the head unit owners manual. I couldn't get my camera to work at first but then was scrolling through the head unit settings and you can change what triggers the camera (+12V, Ground, etc.).

Bought this for my 2013 Ram 1500. Crutchfield hooked me up with mounting bracket and face trim to give a factory look. And got 1/2 off the nav harness.Unit is sturdy and angle adjustment works great. Face removal looks to be sturdy and reliable as well after a months use. HD radio works good and Bluetooth streaming sounds very acceptable with my GNote2. Also was able to use my existing rear camera when backing up. You can even just turn it on when not driving to see behind you. Auto dims with vehicle and lots of illumination settings. Have not tried hooking up to my apps on phone, ordering Samsung MHL adapter separate. Overall very happy would recommend this head unit.

Pros: Double din, Angle adjustment, Built in HD radio. Use existing backup cam, Awsome EQ and all the subwoofer settings you need, Several loudness adjustments, and Good working Bluetooth phone and mic.

    Cons: None yet.

The only problem is that the radio is not compatible with the rear sub- woofer that is built in to the car so I had to add a sub box in the trunk. I owned the 5500bhs which is now being used by my girlfriend. I have owned one Alpine and 4 pioneer units over the last 4 years. I gave up on Alpine because the amount of money I spend on their products and I could'nt even get an update for my navigation unit. So I moved on to Pioneer and I must say I will not go back to Alpine again. This unit does what I want it to do sound good and look good all at the same time. Only thing lefted to do is to add a back-up camera. If you want a HEADUNIT that you can use multiply devices to play music this is the unit for you. Music is my crack....

Video has nice resolution. A steal for the money.

Pros: It's a pioneer, enough said, but screen lay out, options, colors and sound quality are all great.

Cons: Iphone interface isn't that great, due I part to the iphone itself. You can't use the pioneer app to play music and then switch to something you need on the phone because once the app leaves the front of the phone it stops playing your media. Screen quality could be better. The screen is flat so the reflection isn't that bad but the touch quality and movement is lacking as well.

This unit sounds great. The videos look good. If you were planning on using a USB thumb drive or SD card for your music, don't buy it. Music will play but you can't use genre to sort your songs. The genre is random and mixed up. Crutchfield's customer guarantee is the best!!!!! The face plate on my first unit was scratched. Crutchfield replaced it. By now I'd realized the USB music sorting was a mess, Crutchfield replaced the second unit, thinking it was a firmware bug causing the sort issues. Something else had also moved on the second unit making the detachable face click when it opened. (There was an interference between the face and trim. The third Pioneer unit also did not correctly sort the USB genre tag. This third unit also had an audible buzz from an internal motor of some sort. After talking with a Crutchfield technical representative, I decided to replace the third Pioneer with another branded unit. I'm waiting for that unit now. This whole experience could have been completely horrible if not for the excellent customer service that Crutchfield offers their customers. It is not just an empty saying they post on their web pages. It is an absolute fact, if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase within 60 days, they will replace or refund your money. Thank you Crutchfield for helping me with my concerns. I'm hoping this fourth unit from a different manufacturer will work as advertised. I know Crutchfield will be there if it doesn't.

    Pros: Great sound!!!!!

Cons: Will not work as advertised when trying to sort USB sourced music. Build quality and longterm reliability is uncertain.

8500 is a great HU. I originally ordered the 5500 but I wanted the option of running a dual zones so kids can watch movie in the backseat while I'm listening to the radio up front. The sound is amazing and love the MIXTRAX function. Installation was a breeze...my hats off to the Crutchfield staff for putting up with me calling with technical questions. These guys were very patient and walked me through the process.

If you're on the fence between this HU and another Pioneer, I would recommend this one. I spent the extra money and bought the cables to hook up the AppRadio....although it's a bit pricey, I like running navigation/music/browser using my data on the phone.

Pros: Sound quality, perfect fit on VW, bluetooth functionality

Great unit overall. Still learning but if you like new tech stuff like me, do yourself a favor and purchase this unit. I've so far learned just the basic functions of the unit but I'd say that I have explored about 80% of the features. This Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS head unit was installed in my 2003 Toyota 4runner Unlimited. I still need to figure out how to work the APP RADIO mode to get my GPS to work in my vehicle.

Pros: Definitely the BlueTooth function. Multiple input/output options as well for video and audio. DVD is icing on top. Android and I-Phone adaptable. Cool screen theme displays and multiple lighting options.

Cons: Took a little longer to install than anticipated because I was trying to fool around with setting my steering wheel controls. All in all I did the installation in a little under 2.5 hrs.

With my iPhone5 connected to USB1, my older (modified) 128Gig iPod on USB2, a 32-Gig SD card with audiobooks, and BT streaming from my wife's phone, we have all our music covered for our long road trips!

I haven't started playing with the AppRadio feature yet, but I'm hoping I can replace my dashboard mounted Garmin unit with one of the iPhone based GPS app's that I have.

Pros: Lots of inputs including satellite radio and an add-on GPS module UI colors and background easily changed to match your existing colors. Removable face-plate Good quality internal amplifier.

Cons: You must press Play button after powering the unit on, as it starts up with the last audio source paused - annoying and the P8400 didm;t do this. This is the only thing I'd change. Oh one other thing - it's a sealed case and to help with it's longevity it could probably use a cooling fan.

Installed my unit and instantly fell in love. It's a bit complex to install but once its done you will love the way it looks, sounds and performs awesome. Now to the bad part I hate the hand brake cutoff switch. Your unit will only work wile yor car is running or in run mode if your like me and deside to park and enjoy you movie, boy I've got bad news for you. As long as your parking warning light is out so is your ability to watch vids or use navigation.

Pros: Cool, sounds great, good display

Cons: Wont work if your car is powered off.

Don't count on using this with your iPhone 5 for AppRadio unless you spend more money on the kit to make it work. When Apple changed to Lightning connector, you cannot use the included USB port to connect to head unit. You have to buy the adapter kit with an HDMI cable, HDMI to Lightning connector, etc. Even when I finally did get it to work, Waze looks blurry. Why have a GPS app if you cannot use it to navigate while actually driving. That is just plain dumb. I would not buy this unit again unless, knowing that I had to spend more money to get it work with iPhone and not really use the AppRadio for NAV.

Pros: Good sound and blutoooth interface nice.

Cons: Terrible interface connection system that should be highlighted ahead of time that more money has to be spent on cables to actually work with AppRadio, and even then, you cannot use the Waze NAV while the car is moving, which defeats the cost savings of having to have a built in GPS system.

I purchased this unit based on reviews from others. What I kept reading was the increase in sound and quality or Pioneer products. I bit, I bit because of the features and the positive feedback. One of my greatest pleasures was the ease of installation. The instruction provided by Crutchfield reduced my estimated time of 6 hours down to a paltry 45 minutes from start to having my new deck nestled in its new home. Thanks to you Crutchfield team!!

Pros: This deck does everything I want and more! I'm still learning it's capabilities, but I am thoroughly enjoying those features that aided in my purchasing decision.

Cons: I have none. As long as you follow the installation instructions provided and you do your homework/research you also should not have an issue.

My overall review of this head unit is summed up in one word-awesome! I've had this unit for a month and the performance is superior to other head units I've had in the past. The features of this head unit set it apart and makes the high price tag worth it. I purchased the head unit with the Sirius SXV200V1 Satellite Radio Tuner and the Axxess ASWC-1 steering wheel button controller. The included wiring harness and head unit install dash kit made for a seamless installation in my car. I have an existing factor amp and my factor stereo had good sound and could pump-out some good bass, and sound clarity was OK. The Pioneer head unit seems to magnify sound performance. I thought of purchasing a subwoofer, but the head unit puts out such clean and powerful signals, my factory speakers can rival subwoofers and still produce clear sound.

Pros: Features: DVD, CD, SD, iPod, USB, Sirius, Digital and Analog radio. The sound the head unit produces is clean and powerful. The expandability of this head unit is the reason I purchased it and reason I enjoy using it everyday.

Cons: I found this head unit easy to install. The other components I purchased such as the steering wheel control and the parking brake cable for DVD usage, posed small challenges, but I worked through them with a little thinking and ensuring I installed all the wires correctly.

This unit only has one drawback, and that is the appradio feature doesn't work as smooth as expected. It is slow and lags quite a bit when using apps. It is faster to operate it on your phone. Sometimes the app (Waze, specifically) won't open when touched on the Pioneer unit, and I have to touch it on my phone. My phone is the HTC Rezound, unrooted. The phone display must remain on when connected. The unit gets buggy when in appradio mode, and listening to bluetooth audio such as google music. The volume is only controllable from the phone itself. The touch screen works great when not in appradio mode. Love the bluetooth auto connect. Love the iPod controls and search feature. Plays DVDs great. Haven't hooked up the video out. Bluetooth call quality is great. The only reason I give the value 4/5 is because I bought my from scratch and dent, and it i payed full price, I think it would have been a bit overpriced. Again, appradio mode doesn't work as smooth as I expected, but overall I am happy with my purchase and would recommend this product to anyone.

Great system. Works great and is easy to see even with the sun shining in. Makes the factory speakers sound ten times better and clearer. Only complaint is all the extra cables to make the iphone 5 work to its full potential. Crutchfield is great to work with, they really know there stuff and have been able to answer every question I have had and will basically walk you through whatever you need. Installation is so simple and quick.

Pros: Sound, picture, just about everything is perfect and simple.

Cons: Little bit of a pain with all the cables to make the iPhone 5 work to its full potential......but that's not crutchfield's fault and they explained how to make it all work together.

Overall it's a decent unit. Easy to install, simple interface. I couldn't try the appradio functionality as iphone seems to hold a monopoly on that. There's no love for android, and there are so many more androids than iphones.

Pros: Simple use, ease of connection and installation, good sound

Cons: All the websites state that all you need for pandora connection, with an android, is bluetooth. This is a lie. For Android to work 100% with pandora you need both bluetooth and an hdmi or hml connection, which means not every android will work with this radio, only a select few. Earlier versions of pioneer radios only needed bluetooth to connect to pandora, so I speculate Pioneer did this to force us to have to buy more equipment from them to make Pandora work.

This unit does it all. I can consume media from more sources that you can shake a stick at - DVD, Bluetooth, Sirius, SD Card, HD Radio, USB, AppRadio, etc. The AppRadio feature is a little funky to use and the DVD navigation apps work OK, but obviously you are at the mercy of your data plan and coverage. If you use Navigation frequently, spend the money to upgrade to in-dash Navi. If Navi isn't a top priority, this unit is one to consider. The sound qualify is fantastic even with stock speakers, the screen is easy to view and the interface is simple and easy to navigate. The different interfaces and options make this DVD receiver an awesome addition to any car! I plan to buy the rear-view camera for it soon!

Pros: Sound, Sirius, Appradio, iPhone 5 compatibility, features galore, detachable face

Cons: A bit pricey with installation and all the adapters, Appradio technology needs to mature a bit and more apps need to come out for this technology

I installed the unit a couple of weeks ago in my 2006 Lariat Supercrew F150. I had no major problems with the installation process but I also have over 21 years experience in the computer and electronics fields. I also added a steering wheel control unit as well as a Sirius tuner. I also added a back up camera. The x8500bhs is connected to a 5 channel Alpine amp via the RCA low level outputs. The amp is running 4 Infinity door speakers and a Pioneer shallow sub enclosure. Everything works great. The first major complaint I have is that the screen very hard to see during the day when the position of the sun hits my dash. Keep in mind that part of the problem is the design of my dash in my truck. Pioneer does not include any contrast or brightness controls although you have setting control for ever other option you can imagine. I also tried playing with the postion of the radio by moving and adjusting the mounting screws or adjusting the motorized display but it has not helped. I had read someone else's review that stated they were having the same issue as I was researching the product. The second major complaint I have is that this unit has a detachable motorized display. There is a latch at the bottom of the display that you slide to the side to remove the face of the unit. This sliding latch was hitting the outer frame they sent me as part of the installation kit. Even if I was not going to remove the face completely, it was getting stuck as the face moved to insert a disc or SD card. At one point it actually got stuck and could not move in or out and the radio starting beeping it's warning alarms. I had to file the frame that sits under the latch to allow it to move. I called their tech support and they suggested, I adjust the mounting screws so that the headunit would stick out forward beyond the frame but I was not happy with how it looked. I also purchased the Pioneer Iphone5 cable kit to use with the App Radio feature. I have not had a lot of time to play with it but I am able to control my Iphone5 music through the head unit. One thing that I misunderstood was that I thought I was going to control all of my Iphone5 apps through the head unit, as far as I can tell, you can only control those you download that are meant to be used with the App Radio feature. So far, I have not been impressed with those compatible apps. I was able to use the App radio feature with my Iphone 5 without having to upgrade the firmware as I had read on the internet. I am guessing my head unit came preloaded with the correct firmware. One other thing I would like to mention that may be of use to someone researching the product is that the headunit has an option to turn on the rear view camera at anytime but based on the camera installation, the camera only powers on when the vehicle is shifted to reverse, the camera turns on when the rear white lights are engaged. You can wire the camera to turn on when the ignition is turned on. This is not a

Current setup: 2013 WRX, Maestro SW, AVH-X8500BHS, Backup Camera, iPhone 5.

The AVH-X8500BHS overall is very good unit. It does what I wanted to do, which is has Waze running in the foreground and music playing from a source (the source I use is a USB stick loaded with mp3 files) in the background. I have full control of Waze from the H.U. and with steering wheel controls can skip tracks and folders on the USB stick. You do have to go through a lot of button pushes on the phone and the head unit to get an app running on the head unit, I wish it was more "plug & play". I find the low end base not very clean (I am not using an amplifier).

The two biggest faults I see with the H.U. is the lack of brightness on the display and touch screen accuracy. The unit is near impossible to view on a bright day with sunglasses on (I am always have to move my head to get the correct angle to view the display). I find the resistive display not very accurate.

Pros: 1) Run an app from iPhone and play music at the same time. 2) 8 band equalizer, excellent for tweaking the sound to your liking. 3) 2 USB ports

Cons: 1) Dim display 2) Resistive touchscreen (wish it was capacitance based) 3) A bit pricey for such a bad display.

Looks and sounds great. Only installed 24 hours ago so still tweaking some settings. Have listened to FM, Video, SriusXM, IPod and flashdrive. The sound retrieval function is simply amazing on improving MP3 files. Only complaint is cannot get Auto-EQ to work (grey on selection so cannot select it) so will need to call tech-support. All other features working fine and well worth it. Running stock amp and speakers in 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited. Added Pioneer Steering wheel remote but to make it work well also used an IR repeater.

Pros: wonderful sound and looks in otherwise stock system. Added Bluetooth capability to vehicle. Functions for most part easy and self explanatory.

Cons: Manual is poorly printed with faint ink and newprint quality paper. NOT the easiest to read in less than direct sunlight at my age. Resorted to printing PDF version from website. Auto-Eq not working yet but will call tech-support as all other functions worked fine first run.

I have had the AVH-X8500BHS installed in my 2006 mustand for about a month and I must say it is fantastic. I have the SiriusXM SXV200V1 Tuner tuner and a Pyle PLCM18BC License Plate Mount Rearview backup camera installed and they work perfectly. I also have remoted both the aux input and the USB2 input using a PAC 6' USB Cable with Mounting Bracket USBCBL and a similar mount for the aux and they also sound and look great. my only complaint is the i pod input with the app mode/ while it does work sometimes the screen does not show it it is either green and distorted or it is just blank. I have a dock for my i phone 4s and i hacve found that it works most times if i turn the radio on before i place the phone in the dock. I contacted pioneer and they were useless and think it is a radio issue and i should return it. i am an electronics tech and seriously doubt it is a hardware issue more likely it a firmware issue with the radio. If I shut down the phone and eset it while it is on the dock it sometimes works. yet sometimes if I completly shut doewn the car and restart it comes back. it does the same thing with my wifes phone. I am using the Pioneer CD-IU201S cable. hopefully this will fix with a firmware update. I considered getting an i phone 5 but it will look terriable if I have to use the short HDMI adapter from apple. come on pioneer you can do better than that.

It replaced the AVH-8400 which had some serious issues with the touch screen. It would lock up if the outside temps exceeded 75F. Anyway this is perfect, does not mess up, the HD radio is great, bluetooth is simple enough, ipod connection is smooth and the appradio works well. I am using a Motorola Photon (will change soon) and it works with the Pioneer Appradio app. The problem is the phone does not support the newer droid software as the ARliberator app would be on it. It mirrors the phone completely, not limiting the user to the thirteen or so Pionner have for appradio. Now us android users have a better option than the IOS fans. Waze works flawlesly even through appradio, however I have to go through the sync feature every time I use this. It could be down to the older droid os or an inherent issue with the unit. To be hones I don'r really care, as I shall be on a newer phone running ARliberator shortly.

Pros: Touch screen does not freeze like the 8400 did (three bad units)

Cons: Apps for appradio are not so plentiful.

I was in desperate need of a new head unit for my 06 Tacoma. I really needed bluetooth capabilities and I was so use to a big screen to navigate my way around that a single din would not do. The head unit syncs up to my phone effortlessly and adding a new bluetooth device is the easiest set up I have ever had with a stereo. I get no complaints about the included microphone when making calls. Sound is way better then the JVC I had last; I can't wait to install some new speakers and see what it really can do. Yeah this head unit is a bit pricey but I find it well worth it. Installation was a breeze with Crutchfields instructions. My only hic-up was the metra dash kit that I could not get to fit even with some "modifications." No big deal cause I picked up the scoche dash kit which fits perfectly and was way easer to install then the metra. My only gripes is that the sun can make the screen unreadable at certain angles and the expensive iphone cable is a bit more then I am willing to pay for right now. Going to hold out for my next phone upgrade; in the meantime the basic charging cable works great. You can't go wrong with this Pioneer.

Pros: Bluetooth is great and is a breeze to set up, Sound is awesome and the unit has a lot of features to play with your sound.

Cons: Hard to see in certain angles with the sun right on it. Expensive iphone cable; but you only need it to watch video from the phone or use apps.

This is a nice radio but it comes with some issues. After having it installed by a professional car stereo shop we found out that the remote wire doesn't work properly.( the wire that turns on amplifier or power antenna) there was only 2 volts not 12. So I had to bring it back and have them wire it a different way in order to run the 2 amplifier's I had installed. This apparently is a common issue with this radio. As far as sound quality it's awesome really sounds great. As far as functionality it's cumbersome. You really have to read the manual in order to use all the functions properly. The app radio is a real pain to use, almost not worth having. Other than that its a great radio!! I'm only giving 4 stars due to the remote wire issue and the difficulty of use on the app radio.

Pros: Great sound awesome video quality nice looking radio. Bluetooth works great.

Cons: App radio is a nightmare!!

    Worth every penny!

I replaced a pioneer in dash DVD changer from 2006, the avh-p6800dvd with this unit. It's like I went from a econobox car to a Lexus. I was unhappy with MANY features of the old unit and hoping they would be better with this one and I am actually amazed at how much better this unit is. Bluetooth was lackluster and buggy on older pioneer products but this unit is first rate. The control menus and actions are also intuitive and responsive. I can do most anything from the main screen or first submenu. It has so many great features I can't list them. Even the Mixtrax feature (sounded gimmicky) is actually fun with playlists. The advanced app mode is hands down slick with navigation apps. . I paid MSRP and don't regret it. Crutchfield is always a safe, helpful and trusted company to work with.

Pros: Blue tooth auto connects my iPhone. Supports advanced app mode and hdmi. Awesome sound and mixer controls.

Cons: Advanced app mode apps are two few attm. Pricy to get to the full iPhone 5 support due to extra cable needs.

DVD's look great, HD radio is wonderful, BT audio streaming is a dream, and telephone controls are a must have here in Maryland.

However, all of the other functions are a nightmare.

I have an iPhone 5, 64GB, iOS 6.1.3, and I cannot get any of the direct connection things to work properly. When I plug my phone in (using all of Pioneer's recommended cables), the iPod app on the head unit immediately pops up and sits at "reading format" forever and never goes further. The Pandora function refuses to connect, it just continuously says "connection failed, reconnect?". If I attempt to use any of the AppRadio functionality, I first launch the app on my phone, then launch it on the head unit. I am never prompted on the phone to "trust" the head unit, so all I see on the screen is an image of whatever is displayed on the phone. I have no control from the head unit... if I have to do everything from the phone, what is the point of having a second screen installed in my dash?

So far, I have not received any support from Pioneer, hopefully they release a firmware update soon. I have been a loyal Pioneer customer and user for many years, I swear by and highly recommend their products. This is the first time they've let me down, and man, is it a let down.

Pros: So many features, so many possibilities

Cons: Primary "coolness factor" features don't work (yet)

    Great Product

I think its a bit over priced, I think it could be sold for $100 less and I would have given 5 out of 5 stars for everything. However, great unit!!! Pretty innovative. The display is pretty awesome and the layout is easy to navigate. I am satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: Bluetooth - Main reason why I purchased this unit. The Bluetooth audio for streaming music is great. You wont be able to tell that you are streaming thru bluetooth. It sounds great even if you are streaming audio from interenet on your phone thru the bluetooth. The phone option for voice calls are good as well. I suggest mounted the mic along the head line in your car. If you are not looking for it you wont see it. However, the microphone pics up pretty good, I haven't tried it at high speeds tho

Cons: AppRadio - If you purchased the andriod connection kit , you can display your phones screen (dual screen) on the unit, however you cant operate the phone from the unit unless you download the car keyboard app that pioneer suggest. That app ONLY allows you to operate the phone thru the units screen within appradio. If you try outside appradio it wont work. It may if you have a jail broken iPhone. (i saw a video on YT)

    Good To Go!

It was time to upgrade from a single din to a double din stereo again and this was a great upgrade. Everything is running great as I expected with the acception of the App radio. The HD radio is useless unless you are parked in a spot that has good HD reception. But that is not the fault of the radio, that is just HD radio. The pre-sets are nice that you can expand and minimize, the layout is good as well. The DVD player works as expected with a quality picture. The Bluetooth is very nice and the mic is clear, maybe a little too powerful but you can adjust the volume so that is good. I attached the Boyo VTL375 rearview camera and it works great, nice and bright with the view coming on immediately after you place it in reverse. The settings are pretty good throughout the radio. I have not used the SD chip yet.

The App radio works but takes some settings to get it to work. I am using it with an iPhone5. It does have some tweaks that are needed and hopefully there will be an update soon on it. You have to have your bluetooth on, then open the appradio on your phone. The first time you connect each of the apps to your car you might have to allow it access to your phone. It seems to take a few tries the first time then it works good. The pandora radio through the apps mode works great as you can search through pandora just like if it was on your phone.

Pros: The features, sound, solid unit oh and the cool factor :)

Cons: App radio is in progress its a little fussy at times but its only been out a week.

Will be a great stereo soon
