About the Pioneer XDP-100R

Ralph Graves

Hi-res music's just the start

There's something satisfying about holding the Pioneer XDP-100R. Its cast aluminum casing has a solid feel that seems right for a serious piece of hardware. And that's just what the XDP-100R is. It's a high-resolution audio player, a headphone amp, a portable Bluetooth device, and a Wi-Fi gateway to music on the Internet. Oh — and it has a built-in speaker, so you can even use it as a stand-alone music player.

It's a high-resolution audio player, a headphone amp, a portable Bluetooth device, and a Wi-Fi gateway to music on the Internet. Oh — and it has a built-in speaker, so you can even use it as a stand-alone music player.

Pioneer XDP-100R

Uncompromising digital sound quality

The XDP-100R uses a high-performance ESS SABRE digital-to-analog converter (DAC) capable of decoding sampling rates up to 32-bit/192kHz. You can play most types of high-resolution downloads from sites like HDtracks without any additional equipment or file conversion, including FLAC, WAV, and AIFF files. The player is also compatible with MQA, an up-and-coming high-resolution audio format.

Compressed formats like MP3 will sound also their best, thanks to the DAC's extremely accurate decoding. And because the XDP-100R has its own built-in headphone amplifier, you can use high-performance headphones, ensuring you hear every detail. Even entry-level headphones or earbuds can deliver better-than-average performance.

Touchscreen and push-button control

The player's 4.7-inch color touchscreen is simple to navigate. And it displays artist and title info as well as album artwork. You can even customize the look of the screen. An analog volume wheel lets you make minute adjustments to the volume level.

Wi-Fi for music and more

Built-in Wi-Fi lets the player wirelessly connect to the Internet, so you can access a world of music from sites such as Spotify® or Pandora®. The XDP-100R is also compatible with higher-resolution audio services, such as TIDAL, and Onkyo Music, and can play their music at full resolution. The large touchscreen also makes the XDP-100R great for enjoying videos from YouTube® — with optimized sound, of course.

High-res audio

Stream with Bluetooth

The XDP-100R also has built-in Bluetooth with high-performance aptX® audio coding, which lets it stream to compatible wireless speakers and headphones at near-CD quality. This player's a great choice if you have a high-performance wireless powered speakers, such as an Audioengine B2 or a MartinLogan Crescendo wireless home speaker.

Expandable memory

High-resolution audio files take up more memory than compressed MP3s — but the XDP-100R can handle them. The player comes with 32GB of internal memory and dual microSD card slots that let you expand the storage. And of course, you can have more tunes on extra cards you can bring along.

From the Play Screen you can also access the unit's touchscreen playback controls; like Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random.

Note: In addition to touchscreen control, there is a rotary volume dial, as well as push-button Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track controls on the side-panel.

Audiophile Grade Design: Pioneer's years of engineering experience and excellence are combined in the compact portable high-resolution audio player.

  • ESS SABRE DAC & Headphone Amp: Engineered to limit noise from entering the audio signal, the XDP-100R features ESS SABRE DAC ES9018K2M for audio signal circuitry matched with the SABRE 9601K headphone amp to optimize audio processing.
  • Separated & Isolated Circuitry: The XDP-100R was designed with the same goal as Pioneer AV Receivers, to reduce distortion and bring the true sound of the music to the listener. To do this, engineers separated the amplifier and DAC from the main circuit board, isolating the digital noise. This separation also allowed engineers to focus on the audio board, creating a closed-loop design, keeping the audio signal as clean and pure as possible.
  • Closed Loop Design: The audio circuitry and switching power are distanced from each other to keep noise and jitter at bay. The DAC/AMP section utilizes a Closed Loop design with its own capacitors to provide clean audio signal/
  • Solid Construction: The sleek body design of the Pioneer XDP-100R is made of rigid machined aluminum, with removable top and bottom bumpers to protect cables and connectors from wear and tear. Its available in either a black or silver finish.

32GB Internal Storage + microSD Expandable: The 32GB internal SSD storage and optional two microSD card slots provide ample space for all of your favorite high-resolution audio files. The player supports microSD microSDHC, and microSDXC memory cards. Each memory card can be a maximum of 200GB for 400GB of expandable memory. The unit's Android OS takes up approximately 12GB of space, leaving 20GB of internal storage; for a maximum storage of 420GB. The internal memory can hold up to 4,000 MP3 music tracks or 100 FLAC lossless 24-bit/192kHz music tracks.

Android Operating System: With Android Lollipop 5.1.1 OS as the operating platform, you can access Google Play and variety of online music apps, as well as sync your existing iTunes library. Recommended apps include -

  • OnkyoMusic: OnkyoMusic is a leading hi-res digital music provider, which provides all downloads as FLAC and MQA. FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is an audio format that compresses audio without any loss in quality. MQA delivers superior audio with dramatically improved music detail for studio-grade sound in a portable device.
  • Tidal: Tidal is an online music service that lets you stream Hi-Res, CD Quality music from your favorite artists through the XDP-100R.

MQA Technology (via Firmware Update): Pioneer's XDP-100R is the industry's first portable high-resolution player to support the Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) lossless audio standard (via firmware update). MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. And because it's fully authenticated, the listener can be sure they are hearing exactly what the artist recorded and approved in the studio. MQA is also backward compatible with the FLAC format and can thus be played on any FLAC-compatible device

Upsampling & DSD Conversion: You can upsample lower resolution music files up to 192kHz. You can also convert in real-time music files, such as MP3, WAV, and FLAC to DSD. Now, you'll be able to enjoy non high-resolution music files with high quality sound.

X-DAP Link Software: Using X-DAP LINK Software for Windows PC or Mac and the XDP-100R's microUSB port, you can copy music data stored on your computer to the hi-res player's built-in memory or to an inserted microSD card. The X-DAP Link software is smart enough to look into your existing libraries (iTunes for example) to give you easy access, so you can easily store and manage all of your non-DRM (Digital Rights Management) music in one convenient location for download to the XDP-100R via USB.

You can also choose to simply select between the player's EQ Presets - Flat, 11-Band, Dance, Jazz, Pop, Rock, or Vocal.
