Panasonic

Our take on the Panasonic TH-42PX75U

With so many plasma TVs available from brands both familiar and new, how do you identify the best performers? Well, Panasonic is one of only a handful of companies that actually manufacture plasma panels. And Panasonic builds more of them than anyone else in the world. If you want to experience a lifelike HDTV picture today and for years to come, the 42" TH-42PX75U really delivers.

Panasonic's latest plasma panel technology raises the all-important contrast ratio to a remarkable 10,000:1. That means you'll see deeper blacks and more realistic shadow detail. Panasonic also found a way to virtually eliminate "false contouring" — a form of picture distortion that makes the transitions between different shades of the same color appear too sharp and abrupt, giving scenes an artificially layered look. The TH-42PX75U can reproduce up to 29 billion colors in total, with over 3,000 shades of gradation. Images look seamlessly smooth and filmlike, with beautifully natural skin tones.

This HDTV can receive local over-the-air analog and digital signals (antenna required). And cable subscribers can tune in unscrambled channels — including local HD network channels, where available — without a set-top box. Four HD-compatible inputs, including two HDMI, make it easy to connect other top-notch sources, like an upconverting DVD player and an HD satellite receiver.

Features

29 Billion Colors: The TH-42PX75U displays 29 billion colors, from deep blacks providing excellent shadow detail to vibrant colors rendering brilliantly bright scenes.

3072 Shades of Gradation: Plasma displays can suffer from an artifact called false contouring, where transitions between different shades of the same color are too sharp. These transitions can appear as distinct lines between the different shades of color. Having 3072 shades of gradation helps minimize the false contouring artifact so color transitions take on a smooth, natural appearance.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: With the built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

Native Resolution: The TH-42PX75U has a display resolution of 1024 x 768. All incoming signals are converted to this native resolution. The HDMI digital inputs and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, and will display them as 1024 x 768.

Progressive Scan Doubler: The progressive scan doubler displays a full frame of video in 1/60th of a second by de-interlacing the incoming interlaced video signal and progressively scanning the image. This scan doubler also provides even more image enhancement by improving the quality of diagonal lines in a moving picture.

Aspect Modes: Depending on the input signal, you can choose one of the following aspect modes:

  • 4:3: displays a 4:3 picture at its standard size with gray bars along the sides
  • Zoom: magnifies the picture uniformly (vertically and horizontally), so the top and bottom are cut off (recommended for letter box sources)
  • Full: stretches the picture horizontally to fill the screen (recommended for anamorphic sources)
  • Just: stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the screen but with aspect correction applied to the sides of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen (recommended for normal TV broadcasts)
  • H-Fill: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen, the side edges are cut off

Zoom Adjust: You can adjust vertical size and image position when using the zoom mode.

Picture Mode: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Vivid: provides enhanced contrast and sharpness when viewing in a well lit room
  • Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions with subdued room lighting
  • Cinema: for watching movies in a dark room, provides a soft, film-like picture

Picture Adjustment: Several picture settings can be individually adjusted, including Picture (white areas), Brightness (dark areas), Color, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature.

Color Management: When turned on, color management enhances green and blue color reproduction. This is especially useful for outdoor scenes.

Black Level: You can adjust the TV's black level to Dark or Light.

Video NR: Video Noise Reduction removes snow from a weaker analog TV signal.

MPEG NR: MPEG Noise Reduction reduces noise specific to digital signals.

3D-Y/C Digital Comb Filter: This filter minimizes noise and cross-color in the picture when the composite video input is used.

Color Matrix: When viewing a signal input through the component video inputs, this TV will automatically optimize the color parameters based on the color matrix setting:

  • SD: standard analog TV
  • HD: high definition TV
  • 480p: only 480 line progressive signal accepted, no SDTV

EZ Sync: EZ Sync HDAVI Control lets you operate all of your Panasonic "HDAVI Control" compatible home theater components connected by HDMI by pressing a single button on your TV's remote control. Panasonic equipment with the "HDAVI Control" function enables the following operations: Automatic input switching, Power on link, Power off link and Speaker control.

SD Card Slot: The SD card slot on the front of the TH-42PX75U allows you to view JPEG photos on an SD or miniSD card. An adapter is required to use a miniSD card. You can view images as thumbnails (up to 12 images), view them individually allowing you to rotate the image 90-degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise or view them as a slide show, with adjustable picture duration. You can adjust the time duration for the slide show between 1-10 seconds, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, or 120 seconds. You can also adjust the TV's picture settings for your still photos.

GalleryPlayer: GalleryPlayer allows you to view high-definition art and photography purchased on or downloaded to an SD card. GalleryPlayer provides pre-loaded SD cards with copy-protected imagery and images for download to your computer that can be saved on an SD card for display on your television.

Audio Adjustment: The television features independent bass, treble and balance audio settings.

Surround Function: The surround function enhances audio response when listening to stereo programming. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

AI Sound: AI Sound equalizes overall volume levels across all channels and external inputs.

Audio Leveler: The Audio Leveler monitors the difference in audio levels between inputs and minimizes the change in volume when you change inputs. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

Closed Caption: The television includes a built-in decoder that is capable of providing a text display of the audio. The program being viewed must be transmitting Closed Caption (CC) information. The TV features analog and digital close captions:

  • Analog:
    • CC1-4: displays information related to pictures (appears at bottom of screen)
    • T1-4: displays textual information (appears over entire screen)
  • Digital: The digital Closed Caption menu lets you configure the way you choose to view the digital captions when viewing a digital station with (CC). You can adjust size, font, style, foreground, opacity, background and outline settings.

Input Labels: Each input can be labeled to reflect the source connected. The label options are Skip, VCR, DVD, Cable, DBS, PVR, Game, Aux, and (blank).

Input Skip: If an input's label is set to skip, that input isn't selected when toggling through inputs with the TV/Video button.

Favorite Channels: Channel numbers can be registered as Favorites and displayed in the TV's Favorite Tune menu for easier access.

Lock: The Lock function has four settings to block viewing of particular channels or inputs. You create a 4-digit password that's required to bypass the lock. The available settings are:

  • Off: nothing is locked
  • All: all channels and external inputs are locked
  • Custom: locks specified inputs of channels, game systems and programs

Parental Control: This TV incorporates V-Chip technology, allowing you to set a viewing limitation based on the TV and movie ratings. The limitation is customized to specific industry ratings. The control is accessed and protected by the 4-digit password.

Sleep Timer: This television features a built-in sleep timer, set by remote control, that turns the TV off automatically after 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Programmable On/Off Timer: The programmable timers allow you to program the TV set to turn itself on and off at designated times, on designated days, tuned to designated channels. Up to 5 events can be programmed using the timers. An event can have multiple episodes (Daily, Mon-Fri, Every Wed, etc).

Note: The TV automatically turn Off after 90 minutes when turned on by the Timer. This operation will be cancelled if the Off time is selected or if a key is pressed.

Auto Shut-Off: To conserve energy the TV can be set to automatically turn off when no signal continues for more than 10 minutes or when there is no operation of the remote or front panel key controls for more than 3 hours.

Remote Control

IR Wireless Remote: The supplied IR wireless remote control (N2QAYB000103) is a full-functioning remote designed to operate the TV. The remote control will operate certain functions of Panasonic equipment with "HDAVI Control" connected by HDMI automatically through the TV's EZ Sync feature.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

1080p HDMI Inputs: The TV features two HDMI inputs that support 1080p. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. When using an adapter to connect a component with a DVI output, the HDMI 1 input can be used with its dedicated stereo RCA jacks to carry the audio signal.

Component Video Inputs: The two component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i input.

Digital Audio Out: The rear-panel optical digital output allows you to send a Dolby Digital bit stream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder. If the program doesn't include a Dolby Digital soundtrack, a PCM bit stream is output.

SD Card Slot: The TV features a front-panel SD card slot for convenient viewing of your digital photographs. The SD card slot is compliant with SDHC cards up to 4 GB, SD cards up to 2 GB and miniSD cards up to 1 GB (miniSD cards require a miniSD card adapter).

Mounting

Pedestal: The included pedestal stand can be attached to the television and the TV can sit on a table top, shelf or TV stand. The TV's weight, including the pedestal is 75.0 pounds. The pedestal stand comes in three pieces including the pedestal base and two pedestal poles. The pedestal poles attach to the base using four supplied M5 x 16 machine screws and then the pedestal stand attaches to the TV using four supplied M5 x 30 machine screws.

Wall Mounting: On the back of the TV there are four threaded inserts to attach a wall mount bracket. The inserts require M8 bolts and the spacing is 25-15/16" wide x 12-5/8" tall. The TV's weight without the pedestal is 59.6 pounds.

Solid Performer

Written By Mike, Asheville NC on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Had this unit for a couple of months now, since just before the Superbowl, and am very pleased. Picture is superb. Opted for plasma over LCD because it performs better handling SDTV signals and better refresh for watching sports, which is important for me. Panasonic makes the best plasmas (with the possible exception of Pioneer, which are much more expensive.) Everyone sits 10 to 15 feet from the television, so there is no difference to the human eye between 720 vs 1080. Currently have regular (not HD) Dish satellite signal going into TV and am very satisfied. I had initially planned on upgrading to HD programming, but now doubt that I will unless pricing becomes more competitive. Everything looks very good to me. Cannot comment on TV sound quality because I run everything through an Onkyo home theatre receiver and surround system. I have the TV mounted fairly high on the wall in a corner and angled slightly down using a Sanus VMAA26 which both swivels and tilts. The only time glare is an issue is if the central overhead lights in the room are on, which is rare when watching TV. I have also been told, that the high mounting strategy works well for those who wear bifocals. You will not regret purchasing this unit.

Purchase was fast and easy. The sales representative (Scooter) was very knowledgeable of the product and was able to answer all my questions.

The carrier who brought the TV to our house was very courteous and provided a white glove service. In fact they went out of there way for me. I recently had surgery and could not lift more than 15 pounds. The tv need the stand installed. They installed it for me and placed the tv where I wanted it.

WOW

Written By Michael, Saint Charles, IL on Thursday, February 21, 2008

I researched and viewed TV's for months before selecting this model. I am amazed at the picture quality, particularly the black levels this TV delivers. This TV replaced an LCD...the three dimensional depth to the picture is stunning compared to the LCD. I am still within the 100 hour "break in" period so I am keeping the picture conrol setting at or below 0 as recommended and it's still delivering a fantastic picture. Don't settle for the standard preset picture settings! Purchase a DVE calibration DVD (digital video essentials, available on the web). Prior to calibrating with DVE the HD signal feeds were pretty good, however, the SD feeds left a lot to be desired prior to calibration. Following calibration, SD program sources look fantastic and HD feeds are lifelike and stunning. Calibrating any TV in my opinion is simply not possible without a calibration DVD. Calibration is reasonably simple to accomplish using the DVE disk. Test patterns are a must to accurately set color, contrast and brightness. The critical settings to achieve a 3 dimensional picture are the black and greyscale settings. I manually attempted to set it visually and thought I had it set until I completed the DVE procedure and I was amazed what a difference the calibration made. Properly setting brightness and contrast yields two benefits...fantastic picture and longer panel life as performing a calibration generally yields far lower brightness levels, increasing the life of the panel. This TV, out of the box, didn't require a lot of tweaking to bring it to NTSC standards, however, again it was well worth the time spent in doing so.

Regarding the hype in the resolution space (720p vs 1080p)...don't think about 1080p unless your panel size exceeds 50"...you won't see the difference. My progressive scan DVD player (480P) looks nearly as good as HDTV broadcast feeds..that surprised me. I'm looking for a Bluray player as it appears certain now that HD DVD has lost the format war. I"ll update my review once I have the opportunity to test bluray and its ability to upscale standard dvd's to 720P, 1080P resolution.

Several website reviews of the 75U / 77U (77U adds screen coating) gives the nod to the non coated 75U for picture quality. My room isn't overly bright, however, sure I notice some picture washout during the daylight hours, however, my LCD set wasn't obviously better in high room light performance (as LCD's are said to be). I'm glad I didn't drop the extra coin to get the 77U...

Final word...quit waiting like I did and buy this TV! Install it, run it 100 hours, calibrate it, sit back and be prepared for one of the best viewing experiences available today. Something you experienced on your old set called "viewing fatigue" will be a thing of the past.
