Our take on the Panasonic TH-42PZ77U

The 42" Panasonic TH-42PZ77U features a gorgeous 1080p panel that makes the most of today's best high-def sources. And it can display more than 68 billion colors in total, with over 4,000 shades of gradation. Images look seamlessly filmlike, with beautifully natural skin tones. Plus, a special anti-glare filter reduces distracting reflections from room lights.

Why 1080p matters
If you look at all of the high-definition programs available from broadcast, cable, and satellite TV sources, you'll find that most of them use 1080i format — 1920 x 1080 pixels. The TH-42PZ77U's screen is a pixel-perfect match so you won't miss any details. By comparison, "720p" plasmas must downconvert 1080i signals, throwing away a significant amount of picture information. The downconverted image still looks crisp and clear, but there's definitely less fine detail.

Built-in HD tuners
The TH-42PZ77U's built-in analog/digital tuner can pull in every type of over-the-air TV broadcast, including gorgeous, free HDTV (antenna required). In addition, the set's "QAM" cable tuner conveniently allows cable TV subscribers to watch most unscrambled channels without the need for a set-top box — including HD channels in many areas.

Clever connections that do more
The generous array of back-panel connections includes two HDMI digital inputs for hooking up the latest high-def components. If you're using other recent Panasonic HDMI-equipped components, the EZ Sync™ control system enables you to operate compatible models — like one of Panasonic's Blu-ray Disc™ players — using only the TV's remote.

Features

Plasma Panel: The TH-42PZ77U has a contrast ratio up to 5000:1 and an anti-glare filter.

High Definition Tuner: With built-in HDTV tuners for over-the-air (ATSC) and unencrypted cable signals (QAM), you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode HDTV/SDTV signals.

68.7 Billion Colors: From deep blacks providing excellent shadow detail to vibrant colors rendering brilliantly bright scenes, the TH-42PZ77U displays an incredible 68.7 billion colors.

4,096 Shades of Gradation: Plasma displays can suffer from an artifact called false contouring, where transitions between different shades of the same color are too sharp. These transitions can appear as distinct lines between the different shades of color. Having 4,096 shades of gradation helps minimize the false contouring artifact so color transitions take on a smooth, natural appearance.

Native Resolution: The TH-42PZ77U has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. All incoming signals are converted to this native resolution. The HDMI digital and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, and will display them as 1920 x 1080. The HDMI inputs will also accept a 1080p signal.

Aspect Modes: Depending on the input signal, you can choose one of the following aspect modes:

  • 4:3: displays a 4:3 picture at its standard size with bars along the sides
  • Zoom: magnifies the picture uniformly (vertically and horizontally) to fill the screen, so the top and bottom are cut off (recommended for letter box sources)
  • Full: stretches the picture horizontally to fill the screen (recommended for anamorphic sources)
  • Just: stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the screen but with aspect correction applied to the sides of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen (recommended for normal TV broadcasts)
  • H-Fill: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen, the side edges are cut off

Zoom Adjust: You can adjust vertical size and image position when using the zoom mode.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Vivid: provides enhanced contrast and sharpness when viewing in a well lit room
  • Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions with subdued room lighting
  • Cinema: for watching movies in a darkened room, provides a soft, film-like picture
  • Custom (Photo): adjust picture, brightness, color, tint, and sharpness

Picture Adjustment: Several picture settings can be individually adjusted, including Picture (white areas), Brightness (dark areas), Color, Tint, and Sharpness.

Color Temperature: This feature selects the level of warm colors (red) and cool colors (blue). You can choose from a Cool, Normal, or Warm setting.

Color Management: When turned on, color management enhances green and blue color reproduction. This is especially useful for outdoor scenes.

Black Level: You can adjust the TV's black level to Dark or Light.

Video NR: Video Noise Reduction removes snow from a weaker analog TV signal.

Block NR: Reduces the block noise specific to digital signals.

Mosquito: Reduces HDTV flicker noise in the contoured sections of an image.

Digital Comb Filter: The motion adaptive 3D-YC comb filter minimizes noise and cross-color in the picture when the composite video input is used.

Color Matrix: When viewing a signal input through the component video inputs, this TV will automatically optimize the color parameters based on the color matrix setting:

  • SD: standard definition TV
  • HD: high definition TV
  • 480p: only 480 line progressive signal accepted

HD Size: This mode selects between 95% or 100% for the scanning area of the HDTV. This allows you to move any edge noise out of the viewable area.

EZ Sync: EZ Sync HDAVI Control lets you operate all of your Panasonic "HDAVI Control" compatible home theater components connected by HDMI by pressing a single button on your TV's remote control. Panasonic equipment with the "HDAVI Control" function enables the following operations: Automatic input switching, Power on link, Power off link, Speaker control, and One-touch theater playback.

SD Card Slot: The SD card slot on the side-panel of the TH-42PZ77U allows you to view JPEG photos from an SD, SDHC or miniSD card. An adapter is required to use a miniSD card. You can view images as thumbnails (up to 12 images), view them individually allowing you to rotate the image 90-degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise or view them as a slide show, with adjustable picture duration. You can adjust the time duration for the slide show between 1-10 seconds, 15, 20, 30, 45, 60, or 120 seconds. You can also adjust the TV's picture settings for your still photos.

GalleryPlayer: GalleryPlayer allows you to view high-definition art and photography purchased on or downloaded to an SD card. GalleryPlayer provides pre-loaded SD cards with copy-protected imagery and images for download to your computer that can be saved on an SD card for display on your television.

AI Sound: This audio feature equalizes the overall volume levels across all the channels and external inputs.

Surround Function: The surround function enhances audio response when listening to stereo programming. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

Audio Leveler: The Audio Leveler monitors the difference in audio levels between inputs and minimizes the change in volume when you change inputs. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

Closed Caption: The television includes a built-in decoder that is capable of providing a text display of the audio. The program being viewed must be transmitting Closed Caption (CC) information. The TV features analog and digital close captions.

  • Analog:
    • CC1-4: displays information related to pictures (appears at bottom of screen)
    • T1-4: displays textual information (appears over entire screen)
  • Digital: The digital Closed Caption menu lets you configure the way you choose to view the digital captions when viewing a digital station with (CC). You can adjust size, font, style, foreground, opacity, background and outline settings.

Input Labels: Each input can be labeled to reflect the source connected. The label options are Skip, VCR, DVD, Cable, DBS, PVR, Game, Aux, and (blank).

Input Skip: If an input's label is set to skip, that input isn't selected when toggling through inputs with the TV/Video button.

Station Caption: You change a channel's station name to a custom seven character name.

Favorite Channels: Channel numbers can be registered as Favorites and displayed in the TV's Favorite Tune menu for easier access.

Sleep Timer: This television features a built-in sleep timer, set by remote control, that turns the TV off automatically after 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Programmable On/Off Timers: The programmable timers allow you to program the TV set to turn itself on and off at designated times, on designated days, tuned to designated channels. Up to 5 events can be programmed using the timers. An event can have multiple episodes (Daily, Mon-Fri, Every Wed, etc).

Lock: The Lock function has four settings to block viewing of particular channels or inputs. You create a 4-digit password that's required to bypass the lock. The available settings are:

  • Off: nothing is locked
  • All: all channels and external inputs are locked
  • Game: channels 3 and 4 and the video inputs are locked
  • Channel: locks up to seven specific channels
  • Program: block programs based on their TV or movie rating

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components; including VCRs, DVD players, DVD recorders, personal video recorders (PVR), cable boxes, combination cable box/PVRs, DBS receivers, and combination DBS receiver/PVRs. The OK button and directional keys allow you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient. The remote control will also operate certain functions of Panasonic equipment with "HDAVI Control" connected by HDMI automatically through the TV's EZ Sync feature.

Input And Output Notes

HDMI Inputs: The HDMI 1 input has a dedicated RCA audio input, HDMI 2 uses the RCA audio input of A/V input 2 if needed. The HDMI terminals can accommodate copy-protected digital signals (HDCP) from other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. When using an adapter to connect a component with a DVI output, the RCA jacks are used to carry the audio signal. The HDMI inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i inputs.

Component Video Inputs: The two component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i inputs.

Digital Audio Out: The rear-panel optical digital output allows you to send a Dolby Digital bit stream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder. If the program doesn't include a Dolby Digital soundtrack, a 2-channel PCM bit stream is output.

Side Panel Input: A/V input 3 on the side panel includes left and right RCA audio connections, RCA composite video, and S-video connections.

SD Card Slot: The television features a side panel SD-card slot for viewing JPEG images stored on an optional SD-card (sold separately). The SD-card slot is compatible with SDHC cards up to 4GB, SD cards up to 2GB, and miniSD cards up to 1GB (miniSD cards require a miniSD card adapter).

Mounting

Pedestal Base: The TH-42PZ77U includes a pedestal base for cabinet-top mounting. With the pedestal base the TV weighs 92.6 pounds.

Wall Mounting: On the back of the TV are four threaded inserts to attach an optional wall mount bracket. The inserts require M8 (8mm) machine screws, the horizontal and vertical hole spacing is 25-7/8" and 12-1/2" respectively. Without the pedestal base attached the TV weighs 77.2 pounds.

Unreliable, but.....

Written By tdub451, a2, mi on Sunday, March 29, 2009

We owned this set for 15 months when we experienced the dreaded "7-blinking-light" phenemon (the unit becomes totally inoperative). I was VERY upset after paying this price for it!!! (We did receive a FREE wall mount at time of purchase which is very cool--thank you Crutchfield!). I have owned several Panasonic tvs over the years and never experienced a single problem with any of them. I called Panasonic and they have agreed to send someone to repair at no charge---will see how it all plays out but at least they are willing to stand behind their product. I think it may pay to go for the extended warranties with this sort of purchase?? As far as Crutchfield goes: ***** (5 star rating)--made my first Crutchfield purchase in 1978 --- they are the BEST.

Great Plasma

Written By Mike, New York, NY on Monday, March 10, 2008

The picture on this
TV is amazing.
Plasmas produce such
a superior picture
than LCDs. HD
programming looks
great and watching
1080p Blu-ray discs
is incredible.

Now, the not so
great parts. First
of all, this unit
only supplies two
HDMI inputs on the
back. Better than
units that only have
one, but not as good
as the ones that
have four. The
upside here is that
in many cases,
component video
connections can do a
better job for your
720p and 1080i
content (cable box).

Another thing about
this set is that,
from my
understanding, the
TOSLINK output on
the set only passes
audio from the TV's
internal tuner.

I've read some
people mention that
SD programming
doesn't look very
good - and they're
right... but that's
not unique to this
television... You
get an SD picture
and stretch it all
out to fit your
screen, add in the
ridiculous
compression from the
cable companies...
and, there you have
it.

Overall this plasma
is great... I mean,
if you want a 1080p
plasma and you don't
need more than two
HDMI ports then I
can highly recommend
this set. Panasonic
does a tremendous
job - they
manufacture their
own plasma screens.
However, and I know
this is crazy-talk,
I would also suggest
considering a 1080i
set. A hardcore
gamer with a
next-gen console
that produces 1080p
output will
obviously go for the
1080p set, but for
the rest of us,
think about what
else you could do
with the extra money
when you pay only
half as much for a
1080i set. I have a
Blu-ray player, but
how often are you
really watching
Blu-ray as opposed
to cable or
satellite, neither
of which produces
1080p picture. Just
something to think
about.

I'm personally glad
I purchased this set
and buying it from
Crutchfield makes it
even better.
Knowing that they
will support this
product for life is
comforting.

IF YOU WANT A 1080p
SET THIS IS A GREAT
CHOICE.

Not Reliable

Written By shasta54, Redding, CA on Wednesday, February 20, 2008

3 1/2 months and this TV just quit working. The power LED blinks 7 times over and over. It's taking 8 days just to come and get it. The repairman didn't sound hopeful about getting parts. I have found many people with the same problem and this model has been discontinued at the 2 biggest electronics stores. I am very disappointed!!

Want a 1080p at a Bargain?

Written By jay jay, Huntington Beach,Ca on Sunday, February 17, 2008

My sister got one of these for Christmas and I was blown away by the picture it produces! With a HI-def signal and an HDMI cable, you'll never experience a football game with such amazing clarity with anything else.I had to have one of these so I picked one up and it didn't break the bank.I priced other 1080p plasma units and could'nt find a 42inch for less than this one. It boasts 2 HDMI inputs and has a ton of input options on the back. The sound quality is pretty bueno also.If you want a fabulous deal on a 42inch,1080p Hi-def unit and dont want to drop alot of dough, grab a name brand Panasonic, you won't be disappointed.O and mount it on your wall.Your friends will be jealous.

Great HDTV

Written By Kevin, Lancaster, PA on Sunday, January 20, 2008

After taking the plunge and purchasing this HDTV I found I made a great choice. The picture is amazing even when watching the 480i and 1080i digital cable feeds. The only thing I would have changed if I had to do it again would be to purchase a Panasonic HDTV that runs at 120Hz instead of 60Hz like this one. The only reason I say that is with 99% of everything you watch it looks great, but with close up fast movements of the picture you can sometimes see a slight pixilation effect because of the 60Hz. Other than that, love this HDTV!

Worth the Money

Written By SmithSW, Red Lion, PA on Saturday, December 15, 2007

I wanted to take the jump into the plasma television arena for quite some time now, but pricing always seemed out of my budget range. After doing research on the Crutchfield site, & deciding which model would suit me best, I decided to go with this particular Panasonic plasma. I would recommend reading through the instruction book thoroughly as it covers a lot of areas, especially on how to maintain the television. After connecting my high definition cable box, all that I can say about high definition broadcasts is "Wow!". The colors & clarity of the high def broadcasts are stunning. I was not too enthusiastic about the standard analog broadcasts, but that is not the fault of the television. Where this set really shines is in high definition & digital broadcasts. All in all I think it was money well spent.
