Our take on the Panasonic CQ-C7105U

Panasonic's CQ-C7105U CD receiver sports a motorized face that glides down smoothly at the touch of a button, with a finely detailed animated display that'll dress up your dash in real style. Load a disc full of MP3, WMA, and AAC files into the CQ-C7105U, and it'll play back hours of your favorite tunes. If you're an iPod® owner, Panasonic's optional iPod adapter lets you control your player from the receiver, while song and artist info shows up on the display.

A strong built-in amplifier kicks out plenty of power to your speakers, and you can use the built-in 7-band equalizer to clean up problem spots in your vehicle's acoustics. If you want to expand your system, the three sets of preamp outputs deliver a clean signal to external amps or powered subs. Panasonic includes a subwoofer level control along with high-and low-pass filters so you can tune your amplified system to perfection.

And, speaking of system expansion, you'll find a connection for a Panasonic satellite radio or CD changer, plus a rear auxiliary input that'll accept any audio source. You can even talk hands-free with your Bluetooth® enabled phone by connecting the optional Bluetooth adapter.

Features

3D Dot Matrix Display (3DDM): The Panasonic CQ-C7105U features the 3-dimensional full dot-matrix display. You can choose from three graphic patterns (Formula 1 racing, surfing/snowboarding, moving lines, or alternating all three), a 19-band spectrum analyzer, or ten still images (gauges, cars, snowboarders, tropical scene, mountain peak, dolphins, tropical fish, leaves, beach chairs, curved lines, or alternating all ten). You can also customize the display with your own images processed by software available from a special Panasonic website. The contrast of the display can be set between 1 and 5.

Motorized Tilting Face: This unit has a motorized face plate which slides downward when you press the Open button for inserting or ejecting a disc. You can also set the angle of the display to one of four levels. The unit memorizes the last selected angle when the power is turned off, and returns the face plate to the same angle when power is turned on.

MP3/WMA/AAC Compatible: The CQ-C7105U can play MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO 9660 Level 1/Level 2, Apple Extension to ISO 9660, Joliet, and Romeo. The player can support up to 511 files (files and folders), 255 files in one folder, 8 levels, and 255 folders. Note: AAC files which can be played on this unit have the ".m4a" extension, and were encoded with Apple iTunes version 6. Files encoded with the iTunes Apple Lossless Encoder have the ".m4a" extension, but cannot be played on this unit.

Auxiliary Input: The unit is equipped with a rear panel stereo RCA input on an 8" pigtail for the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. A second auxiliary input is available when the optional CY-EM100U Expansion Module is connected.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Panasonic for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Direct Memory (D-M): You can assign a favorite radio station frequency to the D-M button. Anytime you want to tune to that radio station, you can simply press the D-M button, even if you're listening to another source at the time. If you are using an FM modulator, this feature is helpful for storing the modulation frequency.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the receiver has a non-fading, two-channel subwoofer output on an 8" pigtail. You can adjust the volume of the subwoofer output from -6dB to +6dB in 2dB increments. The subwoofer output's low pass filter can be set to 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz. In addition, you can set the high pass filter for the other speakers at 90Hz, 135Hz, 180Hz, 225Hz, or Off.

SBC-SW: The rear speakers can be used as a substitute subwoofer when no subwoofer is connected. When you activate the SBC-SW function, the subwoofer level setting and subwoofer low pass filter settings are activated.

Sound Quality 7 (SQ7): In addition to the bass and treble adjustments, the unit's Sound Quality 7 functions allow you to set the level and center frequency of each of seven bands. You can adjust each band by +/-12dB at the following frequencies: 60Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz, and 16kHz. There are six SQ settings:

  • SQ-Rock: speedy and heavy sound; exaggerates bass and treble
  • SQ-Pop: wide-ranged and deep sound; slightly emphasizes bass and treble
  • SQ-Vocal: clear sound; emphasizes middle tone and slightly emphasizes treble
  • SQ-Jazz: jazz-specific deep sound with emphasis on sharpness of high-hat and echo of saxophone
  • SQ-Club: club and disco specific sound: reproduction of realism being in a club
  • SQ-Flat: flat frequency response; no emphasis applied

Mute/Attenuate: This unit allows you to choose between mute (volume at 0) or 2 levels of attenuation when you want to decrease the volume instantly. Attenuation Level 1 reduces the volume by 10 steps, while Attenuation Level 2 reduces the volume by 5 steps. After selecting mute or the attenuation level in the menu, pressing the Mute button activates the function and the Mute indicator light glows in the display.

Built-in Amplifier Off: If you are driving your speakers with external amplifiers, you can turn off the head unit's internal amp for better sound quality.

Remote Control: The CQ-C7105U is equipped with a wireless remote control (EUR7641010). The dimensions of the remote are: W=1.64", H=0.664", L=3.762". The remote is powered by a CR2025 lithium battery (supplied).

Display Note: Pressing and holding the Source button turns the unit off completely. After the unit has been turned off, you can use the DISP button to switch the clock display and face/button illumination on and off. If you leave the clock display and face/button illumination on, they are "keyed." If you turn the clock display and face/button illumination off, they only turn on when the unit is turned on ("unit on" operation).

Note: The Source button stays lit even with the clock display and other button illumination turned off.

External Device Controls

Optional Expansion Module (hub unit): Connection of the CY-EM100U Expansion Module (item #133CYEM100) allows you to connect up to 4 optional components. In addition, the Expansion Module has an audio/video auxiliary input to allow you to connect a camcorder or portable audio device. You can choose from the following devices:

  • DVD or CD changer: The CQ-C7105U has controls for a compatible Panasonic CD changer, such as the CX-DP880. A CA-CC30U adapter cable (item 133CACC30) is required to connect a CD changer to the Expansion Module. CD Changer functions include: Disc Skip, Direct Disc Select (remote only), Track Skip, Track Search (FF/RW), Disc Intro Scan, Track Intro Scan, Disc repeat, Track repeat, Disc random and Track random. A maximum of 1 DVD/CD changer can be connected.
  • iPod: This receiver is compatible with the optional Panasonic CA-DC300U iPod adapter (item #133DC300). When an iPod is connected using the adapter, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Panasonic receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display. A maximum of 2 iPod adapters can be connected.
  • Hands-Free Phone System: Connection of the optional Hands-Free Phone System (Hands-Free Kit featuring Bluetooth technology: item #133BT100) allows you to talk on a hands-free cellular phone if the phone supports Bluetooth. Note: This unit is designed only for receiving calls. It cannot send calls. A maximum of 1 Hands-Free Phone System can be connected.
  • Satellite Radio Ready: You can connect XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio tuners to the receiver or the optional CY-EM100U Expansion Module:
    • XM Satellite Radio: To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional CNP2000UC XM Mini Tuner (220CNP20UC) and the Panasonic CNP-PAN1 adapter cable (package item number 700XMPAN1).
    • SIRIUS Satellite Radio: To receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional SIRIUS Universal Vehicle Tuner (607SCC1) and the optional Panasonic Sirius Satellite Radio Interface (133PANSC1U).
    • Auxiliary Input: You can plug a portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi3 or the SIRIUS Sportster, directly to the receiver's auxiliary input or to the Expansion Module's stereo audio input. (A male miniplug-to-stereo male RCA plug adapter, such as 119AICIP or 119MCON2M, may be required.)

Awesome HU For The Price

Written By Jay, Killeen, TX on Saturday, January 05, 2008

I researched several headunits before purchasing this Panasonic. In the past I've owned Pioneer, Alpine and JVC headunits and for the money, you can't beat this radio. I recently added new speakers all around an I wanted a nice headunit to complement them. The radio is incredibly easy to use. The controls are very intuitive, I set it up without reading the manual, but it also has several advanced features that aren't included in radios that cost hundreds more (the SBC-SW feature works great and I love the tilt feature). Since installing the radio, I've added the Panasonic specific Sirius radio receiver and its worked flawless as well.

My only complaints are that the dimmer is not automatic. It has three dimmer settings but you have to set them manually by holding down a button for 2 sec / setting which can be difficult/annoying when driving. Why they don't have an auto dim that sets with the headlights? No idea. Also, the screen isn't nearly as nice as I expected. The images are very coarse and the contrast adjustability really just makes them brighter/darker. Don't expect to add a hi-def picture, thats for sure.

Overall, this Panasonic is a good looking headunit, that you can use with an iPod and satellite radio, and it also has good sound quality. This headunit is an excellent buy for someone who wants good sound but doesn't need the complication of a competition-style radio.
