Our take on the Panasonic CQ-CB8901U

More and more radio stations are converting to groundbreaking HD Radio technology, which makes your favorite AM and FM stations sound better than ever. Panasonic's CQ-CB8901U CD receiver includes a built-in HD Radio tuner, so you'll be ready to rock out to incredible reception and improved sound quality from participating stations in no time. No extra gear to install, no extra wires to worry about.

The CQ-CB8901U is also XM-ready, giving you the option of adding 150+ channels of music, news, sports, and more to your entertainment array (XM subscription, tuner, and antenna also required). Whatever you listen to, the on-board amplifier will coax great performances out of all your music, even the MP3 and WMA files you've recorded on CD-R or CD-RW.

Take charge of the sound with Panasonic's SQ7 tone shaping. It offers six preset sound curves for quick adjustments, and a 7-band equalizer for custom tweaking. Looking for some extra bass support, but don't have a full system? With Super Bass Control Subwoofer (SBC-SW), you can filter out the high frequencies and use your large rear speakers as subs.

Front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs send a strong 5-volt signal to any external amps, while the switchable high- and low-pass filters allow you to contour the receiver's output to fit your system design. Connect a DVD or CD changer for even more musical variety. The dual auxiliary inputs allow you to integrate two external sources into your system.

Features

HD Radio: The Panasonic CQ-CB8901U is equipped with a built-in HD Radio tuner from iBiquity Digital Corporation, which allows you to listen to new digital AM and FM broadcasts from their favorite local stations (where available), while still receiving analog broadcasts. With HD radio technology, FM broadcasts sound as good as CDs and AM broadcasts sound as good as FM, all without the static, hiss, pops and fading of analog radio. You can tune the stations broadcasting in HD at the same frequencies on the dial as the analog stations. In addition, HD Radio broadcasts will also include artist name and song title, stock and news information, and local traffic and weather, which appear on the receiver's display.

Digital/Analog Reception Mode: The receiver has a D/A button to allow you to choose between the following reception modes:

  • Auto: When set to Auto, the receiver will display "Digital" when an HD Radio digital broadcast is being received and output. If no digital signal is available on the tuned frequency, "Analog" will be displayed on the front panel and output.
  • Analog: Regardless of the availability of digital signals, the tuner will receive and output analog signals only.

XM Satellite Ready: You can receive XM Satellite Radio by connecting the optional Terk XMD1000 XM Direct receiver (209XMD1000) and the XM Direct Smart Adapter for Panasonic (209XMDPAN1). A subscription to XM Satellite Radio is required to receive the over 130 channels of digital-quality programming.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Panasonic for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Motorized Sliding Face: The CQ-CB8901U features a motorized sliding detachable face with a large bright display. When you press the eject button, the face slides down to allow you to insert or remove a CD. For best visibility, you can utilize the 3-stage tilt function to angle the faceplate at 15°, 25°, or 35°. When the security function is activated, an alarm will sound and a message will appear to remind you to remove the faceplate. After the faceplate is removed, a flashing red LED warns potential thieves. A hard plastic face case is supplied for carrying your detached faceplate. Note: When the receiver is angled at 35°, the bottom of the faceplate protrudes approximately 1-1/8" from the trim ring.

High Definition 3D Dot Matrix Display: The receiver's faceplate features a full customizable, High Definition 3D Dot Matrix display with 5 motion patterns and 10 still pattern presets to choose from. The display's 4-level full dot matrix (256 x 80 dots) capability delivers smooth 3D action graphics. In addition, the background, opening and ending screens can be customized with your own images, stored and downloaded from Panasonic's special website onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

3-Level Dimmer: The display's brightness can be set to one of three dimmer levels. These dimmer levels are fully accessible using the faceplate controls--no wires to connect to your vehicle's headlight circuit.

Day and Night Faceplate: This unit features the Day and Night faceplate. During the day, the face is dark gray with a silvery mirror-like finish on the ends. At night, or whenever it's dark in the vehicle, the outside edges of the faceplate and a "halo" around the volume knob illuminate in blue.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Apple Extension to ISO9660, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 trees, 255 folders, and 999 files. Each folder can have a maximum of 255 files.

SQ7: The CQ-CB8901U features a SQ7 "Sound Quality" 7-band equalizer with 6 EQ presets. The presets include Rock, Pop, Vocal, Jazz, Club and Flat. You can further adjust any of the 7 EQ bands from -12dB to +12dB: 60Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz, 6kHz and 16kHz.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the CQ-CB8901U has a non-fading, two-channel subwoofer output. You can adjust the volume of the subwoofer output from -6dB to +6dB in 2dB increments plus "subwoofer mute". The subwoofer output has a low-pass filter with a selectable 80Hz, 120Hz or 160Hz cutoff frequency.

Super Bass Control Subwoofer (SBC-SW): You can drive small subwoofers with the rear speaker outputs with the SBC-SW. When the SBC-SW is activated, the subwoofer level and low pass filter settings are applied to the rear speaker outputs.

High Pass Filter: This unit has a built-in high pass filter for the front and rear speaker and preamp outputs with a selectable crossover frequency (90Hz, 135Hz, 180Hz, 225Hz or Off). Note: When the SBC-SW is activated, the high pass filter affects the front outputs only.

Mute/Attenuate: This unit allows you to choose between mute (volume at 0), attenuate level 1 (volume decreased by 10 steps), or attenuate level 2 (volume decreased by 5 steps when you want to decrease the volume instantly. After selecting mute or attenuate 1 or 2 in the menu, pressing the Mute button activates either function and the Mute indicator light glows in the display.

Auxiliary Input: A set of female RCA jacks (labeled AUX1-IN) are provided to allow the connection of a portable audio source. Just connect your portable cassette, MD or MP3 player to this unit, and you can listen to the audio from the portable player through the speakers in your mobile audio system. The jacks are on a 6" long pigtail attached to the back of the unit. A second set of female RCA jacks (labeled CH/AUX2-IN) can be used to connect a CD changer or a second auxiliary source.

Alphatuner V: The CQ-CB8901U's Alphatuner V tuner is designed to help suppress multi-path distortion and reduce the problem of radio signal reflections in metropolitan areas. It also features increased sensitivity for weak signal areas. Note: The Alphatuner V tuner receives analog broadcasts, while at the same time, the unit's built-in HD Radio tuner receives signals from stations broadcasting in digital.

Radio DSP: By digitally converting and processing AM and FM broadcast signals, adjacent interference and multipath distortion are greatly reduced. The radio's IF filter prevents neighboring frequencies from interfering with reception of the desired station. Radio DSP uses an advanced algorithm to perform this task with digital control by automatically adjusting the IF filter's bandwidth in response to changing interference as you drive.

Auto Preset Memory: This unit's APM (Auto Preset Memory) lets you automatically save stations with good reception in preset memory. Depending upon the Digital/Analog reception mode, the APM will search for digital and/or analog stations with the best signals and load them into preset positions. Once the stations are set, the presets are scanned sequentially for 5 seconds each.

Remote Control: The CQ-CB8901U is equipped with a wireless remote control (EUR7641010). The dimensions of the remote are: W=1.64", H=0.664", L=3.762". The remote is powered by a CR2025 lithium battery (supplied).

CD Changer Controls

CD Changer Controls: The CQ-CB8901U has controls for a compatible Panasonic CD changer, such as the CX-DP880. CD Changer functions include: Disc Skip, Direct Disc Select (remote only), Track Skip, Track Search (FF/RW), Disc Intro Scan (remote only), Track Intro Scan (remote only), Disc repeat, Track repeat, Disc random and Track random

Note

Display Note: Pressing and holding the Source button turns the unit off completely. After the unit has been turned off, you can use the DISP button to switch the clock display and face/button illumination on and off. If you leave the clock display and face/button illumination on, they are "keyed". If you turn the clock display and face/button illumination off, they only turn on when the unit is turned on ("unit on" operation). Note: The Source button stays lit even with the clock display and other button illumination turned off.

very disappointing performance

Written By Lewis, Bennettsville,SC on Monday, March 12, 2007

I purchased this radio for all the extras it has. The FM tuner was very weak, but the worst problem I had with it was the CD player. I have a lot of power for my subs and when I turned the volume up it would cause the player to skip very bad. I even swapped it out for another one with the same results. I really wanted this radio for the HD tuner, 5 volt preouts, and looks. I ended up swapping it out again for an Alpine. I can now turn my volume as high as I want to and it doesn't skip at all. No more Panasonics for me. Thanks to Crutchfield and Bob in particular for all his help and patience with my problem.

Could be my car?

Written By Malcolm, Atlanta on Wednesday, October 25, 2006

I took a chance with this unit - the reviews at this site were not exactly glowing, but the HD radio and major price drop was the enticement. I had some minimum requirements - aux input; sensitive radio receiver; good sound; motorized faceplate; cool screen.

Turned out that it exceeded my expectations in some areas, but ultimately disappointed where it mattered most - audio experience....but may have been because of the set-up in my car? I have a Mazda Milennia '98 with Bose. The issue was that there was a loud hiss (all input sources) until I turned the volume to a high enough level - louder than I like to listen to radio/CDs in my car. Crutchfield technician says it may have been due to the car amplifier. All I know is that the HD radio (key reason for purchasing this over, otherwise similar, units) may have been "static-free" but it was "hiss-rich", just like the CD player and the analog radio.

On the plus side, I liked the Blue screen very much. I had just returned a different Panasonic model (Panasonic CQ-C8303U) that had a color OEL screen, and I realized after getting this unit that the plain blue screen was much classier. Other than the hiss at lower volume levels, the sound attributes were very good.

I started out buying this because of the rave reviews about HD radio in general. I ended up returning to my original Panasonic model, not bothered that I was "giving up" HD radio. Bottom line, if this thing played in my car without the hiss problem then I'd definitely prefer it to the model I ended up purchasing for the same price.

Love it.

Written By Richard, Orlando, FL. on Saturday, October 01, 2005

I needed an HD radio for my job, so I was given the JVC KD-SHX900. My JVC was stolen so I bought the Panasonic CQ-CB8901U as a replacement. The graphics are not as impressive as the JVC but I dont need anymore distracitons while I'm driving. The HD text on the Panasonic is really good, and the audio quality on the HD signal is fantastic. I do like the fact that I can go from analog to digital by pushing the button on the front of the faceplate, the big volume knob is really convenient, and I especially like the text (title and artist) for the CD player. I recommend the Panasonic over the JVC (the KD-SHX900 is not available anyway) simply on cost alone. The JVC is $400 more than the Panasonic and they both do the same thing. Not to mention that the JVC has an extremely complicated menu to navigate through. The only real complaints I have about the Panasonic CQ-CB8901U is not being able to receive the multicasted HD stations, and I have Sirius but the Panasonic is XM ready only. I had to use an aux in instead of the easy and convenient satellite radio input that was provided.

With all due respect to what the reveiwer from L.A. was talking about regarding synchronizing, and sound quality being bad. That falls on the radio station to synch and process the audio. The tuner has nothing to do with it. You need to call your local station(s) and let them know the problems you are having. Some stations are running HD and might not have an HD tuner to monitor the signal. It also lets them know that there are people out there listening to the HD signal.

Panasonic CQ-CB8901U

Written By hyfyguy, Agawam, MA on Sunday, September 18, 2005

The Panasonic CQ-CB8901U is a pretty good receiver. It is fairly easy to navigate considering its host of features. Without a plethora of useless features (You can switch off the graphics!) It has considerable output power. CD/MP3/WMP worked flawlessly. Originally purchased for HD reception. (It is much better than the horribly cheesy Kenwood KDC-MP625 receiver I had rigged with the outboard HD receiver.) The Panasonic performed well (a previous rating deemed it lousy, that is due his broadcaster still working out the "bugs", the 12 stations in my area are synchronized correctly). This receiver does have some annoying problems. The volume control is shallow and hard to operate without pushing it into advanced functions, and would be better suited with a rubber grip ring. The dimming control feature should be hard-wired and controlled with the vehicle. It lacks RDS for analog reception, You cannot switch it to digital only (The only thing the Kenwood sort of did better, this may have helped for the previous respondent, and it can be annoying when not synchronized, and the highs can get much brighter when it switches to digital). Separate equalization should be made available for Digital and Analog reception.
True digital sounds great on FM and AM alike, It has great headroom, ambiance and clarity. the sound quality will most realized on less compressed music and live studio performances, the HD improvement to AM is phenomenal. HD radio is generally only available during daylight hours on AM, and will generally have reduced range (distance) on both FM and AM. HD is available in most larger markets across the US, and more are coming on-line every day. I recommend it.

$500 dollars for $200 Performance

Written By Anonymous, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, September 07, 2005

I bought this receiver for 2 main reasons: I wanted to try HD radio, and I wanted the 7 band equalizer. The equalizer worked fine. However, the HD radio does not sound good at all. It claims "CD quality" however it is far from the truth. I compare it to an MP3 ripped at 64k - the treble is very harsh and distorted. Also, the reception is poor and since there is a lag between digital and analog radio signals, when the receiver automatically switches (because of poor reception) it will jump to different parts of the song - every time it switches. This is highly annoying. I guess I should have known better than to try an emerging technology - i.e. HD Radio. Also, a minor annoyance - the "spectrum analyzer" lags a lot, and doesn't really reflect the music. Conclusion: Don't buy it for the HD Radio. In fact, don't buy it at all unless they cut the price by at least $300.
