Our take on the Panasonic DMR-ES40VS

With the DMR-ES40VS, you get a both a VCR and a DVD recorder rolled into a single convenient component. Useful recording features like one-touch dubbing and front-panel camcorder inputs make it a cinch to copy home video footage to DVD or VHS. And like other Panasonic DVD recorders, the 'ES40VS retains higher image resolution even at lower recording quality settings, so you can save more material on a disc and still enjoy a clear, detailed picture.

When you use a type of rewritable disc known as "DVD-RAM," you can take advantage of some cool perks that make it easier to enjoy your favorite TV shows. For example, you can start watching a TV program from the beginning while it's still recording. Or, you can pause playback while the deck continues to record, and watch the rest later.

You can enter your own title for each home movie or TV show you save to DVD. Finding what you want to watch later on is simple, too — the 'ES40VS displays thumbnail images of all the recordings on a disc, along with the date, channel, and title. And this combo recorder is a great option for backing up VHS tapes — it helps make your VHS material look cleaner and sharper when dubbing to DVD.

Consumer Alert: This DVD recorder/VCR has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Features

Product Overview: The Panasonic DMR-ES40V can record video and audio to blank DVD discs, using DVD-RAM (rewritable, including 8cm), DVD-R (record once, including 8cm), DVD+R (record once), and DVD-RW (rewritable, including 8cm) discs, including blank discs in cartridges. The DMR-ES40V also includes a HiFi VCR for VHS recording and playback.

Channel Label: You can name each programmed TV channel with a label up to 4-digits.

Record one thing/Watch another: When you're recording a program to DVD, you can watch a VHS tape. When recording to VHS, you can watch another TV show (tuned on your TV) or watch a DVD.

DVD Recording Features

Multiple Recording Speeds: This unit can record in four different speeds; SP is standard picture quality, LP is long play with slightly lesser picture quality, EP is extra long play with the lowest picture quality, and XP is the highest picture quality. In the Setup Menu, you can choose to set the recorder to record either 6 or 8 hours of programming in the EP mode. When the 8-hour recording option is chosen, the sound quality is lowered compared to other recording modes.

Recording Mode Recording Times (approximate)
Single-sided Discs/4.7 GB Double-sided Discs/9.4 GB
XP (High Quality) 1 hour 2 hours
SP (Standard) 2 hours 4 hours
LP (Long) 4 hours 8 hours
EP-6H (Extended Play) 6 hours 12 hours
EP-8H (Extended Play) 8 hours 16 hours
FR (Flexible) 8 hours 16 hours

Flexible Recording Mode (FR): Flexible Recording mode automatically selects a recording rate between XP and EP (8H) that will enable the recordings to fit in the remaining disc space with the best possible recording quality. You can set Flexible Recording mode when transferring (dubbing) or programming scheduled recordings.

Title Capacity: You can record up to 99 titles on a DVD-RAM, DVD-R, or DVD-RW disc, up to 49 titles on a DVD+R disc.

VCR Plus+: In addition to DVD timer recording the DMR-ES40V also features VCR Plus+. Entering the VCR Plus+ code from your local newspaper or TV Guide can be used as an easy way to program the unit to record.

Timer Recording: You can program the DVD's timer to record up to 16 broadcasts, as far as a month in advance. You can also record programs on a weekly or daily basis.

One-Touch Recording: You can begin recording with a single press of the record button. Each subsequent press of the button adds time to the recording in the following sequence: 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours.

One-Touch Transfer (VHS to DVD): You can transfer programs recorded on a tape onto a disc with one press of the stroke of the button. In One Touch Transfer, programs are automatically transferred onto the disc from the location of playback at the time when the transfer of the tape starts. Available discs for transfer from tape are DVD-RAM, non-finalized DVD-R, DVD-RW (DVD-Video format), and DVD+R.

Direct Navigator: A list of programs is created as you record them. Using the Direct Navigator, you can select programs from the list to watch. Direct Navigator provides information about each program, including title, channel information, time/date and those programs that are write-protected, copy-protected, unable to play or currently recording.

TV Tuner: The recorder has a built-in TV tuner. Just like a standard VCR records to a VHS cassette, TV shows can be recorded to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and VHS with this unit. During the initial start-up, after the antenna has been connected, the recorder will automatically tune in the available stations and set the clock.

Copy Protection: Some TV programs have encoded copy protection, (using CPRM--Content Protection for Recordable Media) allowing them to be recorded only once. It is not possible to record digital broadcasts that allow One time only recording onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD+R. You must use CPRM-compatible DVD-RAM discs.

Note: Most pre-recorded DVDs have copy protection that prevents them from being recorded at all.

Time Slip: While recording on a DVD-RAM disc, you can simultaneously check the accuracy of the recording using Time Slip. This feature displays the recorded information 30 seconds or more behind the current recording, you can also increase the amount of time behind the current recording. The recorded image appears as a picture-in-picture on top of the current recording. During playback of any type of disc, Time Slip allows you to view the currently tuned TV station.

Chasing Play: While recording on a DVD-RAM disc, you can start watching the same program being recorded from the beginning, while the unit records a later part of the same program.

Simultaneous Record and Play: While recording on a DVD-RAM disc, you can watch one show on the disc while the unit is recording another. Editing programs during Simultaneous Record and Play is not possible.

VCR Plus+: In addition to DVD timer recording the DMR-ES40V also features VCR Plus+. Entering the VCR Plus+ code from your local newspaper or TV Guide can be used as an easy way to program the unit to record.

Entering Text: The programs recorded on this unit can be given titles with the following maximum number of characters:

  • DVD-RAM: Title:64, Title (scheduled recording):44, Disc:64
  • DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R: Title:44, Disc:40

Editing: Once a program is recorded on DVD-RAM, it can be erased, or parts of it can be erased. Operations that can be performed with titles include erasing, dividing, or combining chapters and set up and cancel protection from erasure. With any type of disc you can erase the title, create and change thumbnail images, list properties, and edit the title.

Finalizing Discs: Like a CD recorder, this unit can finalize a DVD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD+R after recording so it can be played on another DVD player (finalizing a disc effectively converts it into a DVD Video). The process takes up to 15 minutes. DVD-RAM discs recorded with this unit are not finalized and cannot be played in a standard DVD player unless it is specifically DVD-RAM compatible.

DVD Playback Features

Disc Compatibility: In addition to recording and playing back DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+R discs, the DMR-ES40V can play back DVD-Video, DVD+RW, Video CD, Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 and JPEG files (on CD-R and CD-RW).

MP3 Playback: This unit can play back files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc with a computer. Discs must conform to ISO9660 Level 1 or 2 (except for extended formats) or Joliet formats. The compatible sampling rates include 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, and 48kHz and the compatible compression rates range from 32 to 320kbps. This unit is not compatible with ID3 tags.

Still Picture Playback: This unit can play back JPEG files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc. The unit can handle a maximum of 999 files and 99 folders. Compatible file sizes range from 34 x 34 to 3840x2160. Motion JPEG is not supported.

PCM Down Conversion: You can select whether you want the player to down-convert a high-resolution audio signal (96kHz or 88.2kHz sampling frequency) to 48kHz/16-bit before passing it through the digital output. If the equipment connected to this unit is capable of processing a 96kHz or 88.2kHz signal, you should turn PCM Down Conversion off. If the equipment is not capable of processing the high sampling frequency signal, you should turn down-conversion on.

Note: Signals are converted to 48kHz or 44.1kHz despite the settings if the signals have a sampling frequency of over 96kHz or 88.2kHz, or if the disc has copy protection.

Progressive Scan Output: This DVD player may be set to output a progressive scan (480p) or interlaced (480i) video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan compatible component video input.

Dialog Enhancer: This feature makes dialogue easier to hear by raising the volume of the center channel.

Note: Dialogue Enhancer only works with Dolby Digital-encoded DVDs that have at least three channels of recorded audio, where the dialogue information is recorded in the center channel.

Picture Detail Adjustments: You can use the video menu to set the picture quality to normal or cinema, which mellows movies and enhances detail in dark scenes.

Virtual Surround Sound (V.S.S.): If you are only using only two front speakers in your system, this feature simulates a surround-sound environment.

Note: For use with Dolby Digital DVDs 2-channel or over only.

Resume Function: When the Stop button is pressed, that position is stored in the memory. When the Play button is pressed after pressing the Stop button, playback resumes from the position where the disc was stopped. The resume function is canceled if the disc tray is opened, the Stop button is pressed a second time, or the unit is turned off.

Multi-Angle Function: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles.

Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Playback Operations: The DMR-ES40V features the following playback operations:

  • Repeat Play: Repeat title, chapter, track, disc, or group (MP3)
  • Slow Motion/Frame-by-Frame: Five slow-motion speeds in either direction or advance one frame at a time
  • CM (Commercial) Skip: The CM Skip button advances a recording forward one minute and resumes playback
  • Quick View: Increase the playback speed by 1/3 without distorting the audio (DVD-RAM only)

Parental Control: You can select a parental control rating which is protected by a 4-digit password.

Still Mode: You can specify the type of picture shown when the player is paused. You can select Automatic, Field, or Frame. When Field is selected, still pictures are displayed without blur. Field should be chosen if jittering occurs when Automatic is selected. When Frame is selected, even sharper still pictures are displayed. Frame should be chosen if small text or fine patterns cannot be seen clearly when Automatic is selected.

Black Level Control: You can adjust the black level of the input signal by selecting lighter or darker. For the output signal, you can select lighter or darker when using composite or S-Video outputs and lighter, normal, or darker when using the component video outputs.

Dynamic Range Compression: When playing a Dolby Digital-encoded DVD, you can turn the Dynamic Range Compression On for late night viewing. This is often referred to as a Midnight Mode or Late Night Mode.

VCR Features

S-VHS Quasi Playback: This unit can play back tapes recorded in the S-VHS system. They are played in standard VHS resolution.

Recording Speed: The VCR can record in SP, EP (3 times the length of SP), or VP (5 times the length of SP) mode.

Index Marks: Index Marks are inserted automatically at the start of every recording, making it easy to find the beginning of a program when multiple recordings are on one tape. Up to 20 index marks can be searched in either direction.

Repeat: This feature allows you to automatically rewind and repeat the tape after it finishes playing a recorded program.

One Touch Transfer (DVD to VHS): You can transfer titles recorded on a disc onto a tape with one touch of the button. In One Touch Transfer, all contents on the disc are automatically dubbed onto the tape.

Note: You cannot dub any commercially available DVDs that are copy protected.

One-Touch Recording: You can begin recording with a single press of the record button. Each subsequent press of the button adds time to the recording in the following sequence: 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, and 4 hours.

VCR Plus+: In addition to VCR timer recording the DMR-ES40V also features VCR Plus+. Entering the VCR Plus+ code from your local newspaper or TV Guide can be used as an easy way to program the unit to record.

Timer Recording: You can program the VCR's timer to record up to 16 broadcasts, as far as a month in advance. You can also record programs on a weekly or daily basis.

Auto SP/EP Mode: If, at the beginning of a scheduled recording, there is not enough tape remaining to complete the recording, the SP/EP function will automatically run the tape at EP speed for recording. This ensures that the entire program will be recorded. If EP mode is not enough to stretch the remaining tape to fit the whole program, you will not be able to record the whole TV program.

Jet Search: It is possible to view a tape at approximately 27 or 35 times normal speed.

Remote Control

Remote Control: The supplied remote is pre-coded to operate the basic functions of several different brands of TVs, so you can control the DMR-ES40V and the basic functions of your television with one remote. The remote control code can be set to one of three codes so this remote doesn't interfere with other Panasonic equipment in the same system.

Input and Output Notes

Front Panel A/V Inputs: The unit has a set of audio/video inputs on the front panel behind a fold-down door. The inputs include stereo audio RCA jacks, RCA composite video jack, and an S-video jack. If you are connecting a mono source to the front panel inputs, you can use the left channel audio jack and both channels will be recorded onto the disc, no Y adapter is necessary.

DV Input: If your digital camcorder has a DV output jack (also called IEEE 1394 or i.LINK) you can record onto a DVD without converting the signal to analog. When recording from a mini DV camcorder you select the audio to record to DVD, stereo 1, stereo 2, mix.

Optical Digital Output: In addition to the stereo analog audio outputs, this unit has an optical digital output, compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams. To enjoy multi-channel surround sound from this output, you will need to connect a receiver/amplifier with a built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder.

Component Video Output: In addition to the composite video outputs and the S-video outputs, this unit is equipped with a set of component video outputs on the rear panel. The component video output can be set for interlaced or progressive scanning depending upon the compatibility of the connected TV.

RF Input/Output: The RF Out connection is a pass-through output for the antenna or cable signal fed to the RF In connector. When a DVD is played, the DVD audio/video signal is also output through the RF Out connection.

Mixed Bag

Written By Carlos, Reston, VA on Sunday, February 19, 2006

I loved the convenience, space saving, and cable-less setup provided by a combo unit. However the results were less than stellar. The first DVD-R I burned was not recognized by any of my desktop or laptop players, although the settup DVD players worked OK. Subsequent DVD-RWs worked fine.

As the manual states, on-disc chapter editing can only be done on DVD-RAMS, which are not yet widely recognized. As a result to add my own chapter breaks, I had to bring the DVD into my computer, edit the chapter breaks and reburn it. Thankfully RWs exist so the intermediate step doesn't kill a disc.

The DVD controls are not as convenient as my old Sony DVD player. While I appreciate a 100x fast forward and reverse, it isn't that useful. On the low end there is a 2x and a 10x, but it is sorely missing a 5x speed. Changing subtitles requires going into an on-screen menu, rather than just pressing a single button.

All in all, I will probably return the combo unit and get two separate units since there appears to be more variety in the standalone DVD recorder market.
