Our take on the Panasonic DMR-ES25

Capture your favorite television programs on durable DVDs with Panasonic's DMR-ES25. This recorder gives you all of the convenience and flexibility of a VCR, but with the crisp, clear picture of DVD. And one-touch recording makes it a snap to capture the programs you like.

Higher resolution playback
If you've got a high-def-capable television with a digital video input, your DVD movies will look even better — this recorder can upconvert regular DVD video to a resolution that better matches your TV. And digital photo fans will also appreciate the 'ES25's ability to display pictures stored on SD cards using a front-panel slot. Music fans can play their favorite CDs and homemade discs loaded with MP3 files.

Archive your existing recordings
You can also back up your home videos using this deck's handy front-panel inputs. Hook up your VCR to make durable DVD copies of your home-recorded VHS tapes. Or connect your digital camcorder, and create multiple copies of last year's reunion to share with your family.

Easy, convenient control
Panasonic's EZ Sync™ control makes it easy to turn on your system for movie night. Just connect this deck to a compatible Panasonic plasma TV using HDMI. A push of a button on the remote turns on both the deck and the TV, and automatically switches the television to the correct input. You won't need to fumble with multiple remotes every time you want to watch a movie — just settle in for a great show.

Consumer Alert: This DVD recorder has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Features

Overview: The Panasonic DMR-ES25S is a progressive scan, super multi-format DVD recorder with an SD Card slot, DV input, and HDMI output with EZ sync control.

Super Multi-Format Recording and Playback: The DMR-ES25S is incredibly versatile and format friendly. It can record and play back about any DVD you can throw at it. Specifically, it can record and playback the following discs.

  • Recordable and Playable Discs: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD, and DVD+RW
  • Playable Only Discs: DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (dual layer), DVD+R (dual layer), CD, CD-DA and CD-R/RW (including MP3 and JPEG files)

LP Mode Recording: This DVD recorder can record an amazing 500 lines of horizontal resolution in LP mode, which is twice the 250 lines of resolution offered by conventional DVD recorder's LP modes. So, you get 4 hours on a single-sided DVD-R or DVD-RAM as opposed to 2 hours and still enjoy the crisp, vibrant images with exceptional detail that 500 lines of horizontal resolution delivers.

High Definition (1080i/720p) Up-Conversion with HDMI: When connected to an HDMI-compatible TV via an HDMI cable, the DVD recorder can up-convert the DVD content that you are watching to 720p or 1080i resolution (depending on your TVs display capability) so you can enjoy beautiful, high-quality imagery in high definition.

Time Slip: The Time Slip feature allows you to simultaneously record and play back when using DVD-RAM discs.

Chasing Playback: With the Chasing Playback feature you can begin watching the portion of a program that has already been saved while the DVD recorder continues recording the remainder of the program.

Safe-Record: Safe-Record will save your favorite programs from being accidentally recorded over by automatically scanning the disc for blank space before starting the recording process.

Direct Navigator: The enhanced Direct Navigator helps keep track of all those programs you have recorded by displaying thumbnails of every program on the disc as you browse, making it easy to identify the contents of each recording.

One-Touch, 2-Way Transfer: You can dub a VHS tape to DVD by pushing a single button. So, you can easily preserve your precious, delicate VHS tapes by transferring them to DVD, which will provide durability and many years of enjoyment.

Advanced Progressive Scan: Utilizing advance progressive scan playback techniques and very accurate MPEG video decoders, this DVD recorder provides and image that faithfully represents the image you see at your favorite movie theater.

Rapid Random Access: With this feature you can jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, the DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

Playlist Playback: You can perform simple non-linear video editing, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections to create custom playlists for yourself.

Built-In TV Tuner: The built in TV tuner allows you to view and record your favorite programs from the DVD recorder. The unit is equipped with the following channel capability.

  • Antenna: VHF (2-13) and UHF (14-69)
  • Cable TV: VHF (2-13), CATV Low Band (95-99), CATV Mid/Super Band (14-36), CATV Hyper Band (37-65), Ultra Band (66-94/100-125), Special CATV channel (1)

Recording Mode

Selectable Recording Modes: You can set the recorder to one of five different recording speeds; each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP and SP modes provides less recording time with higher quality recording and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There is also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space you have left on the disc.

Recording Times: The unit can record in the following modes on both single- and double-sided discs. Recording times for each mode and disc type are as follows:

Recording Mode
DVD-RAM DVD-R, DVD-RW
DVD+R (4.7 GB)
Single-sided (4.7 GB) Double-sided (9.4 GB)
XP (High Quality) 1 hour 2 hours 1 hour
SP (Standard) 2 hours 4 hours 2 hours
LP (Long Play) 4 hours 8 hours 4 hours
EP-6H (Extended Long Play) 6 hours 12 hours 6 hours
EP-8H (Extra Long Play) 8 hours 16 hours 8 hours
FR (Flexible) 8 hours maximum 8 hours maximum for one side 8 hours maximum

DV Input: The DMR-ES25 is equipped with a front panel 4-pin DV input (IEEE 1384) for connecting to and recording from digital camcorders. When the DV Auto Recording function is used, programs are recorded as a title, while at the same time chapters are created at each break in the images automatically.

Note: The DV input terminal can only be used for DV equipment only--it cannot be connected to a computer.

Scheduled Recording: You can enter up to 16 programs up to a month in advance to record on this DVD recorder. Each daily or weekly program is counted as one program.

Line-In NR: This feature reduces video tape noise while copying. You can select either On, Off, or Auto.

Title Operations: You can create and modify titles on your disc.

  • Delete Title: once a title is deleted, the recorded contents are lost and cannot be restored
  • Properties: information such as time and date are displayed
  • Title Name: you can give names to recorded titles up 44 characters
  • Protection: when this is set it will protect your title from accidental deletion
  • Shorten Title: remove unnecessary parts of the recording such as commercials
  • Change Thumbnail: change the image to be shown as a thumbnail picture in the Title View
  • Divide Title: divide a single title into two separate titles

Chapter Operations: You can create and modify chapters within a Title.

  • Delete Chapter: once deleted, the recorded contents are lost and cannot be restored
  • Create Chapter: select the point where you want to start a new chapter while viewing the title
  • Combine Chapters: the selected chapter and following chapter are combined

Playlist Operations (RAM only): You can create your own custom playlist for your disc.

  • Delete Playlist: once deleted, the playlists are lost and cannot be restored
  • Properties: playlist information such as time and date are displayed
  • Create: arrange the chapters within the title of your DVD-RAM disc to create a custom playlist
  • Copy: the copied playlist becomes the newest one in the playlist view screen
  • Playlist Name: name your playlist with up to 64 characters
  • Change Thumbnail: change the image to be shown as a thumbnail picture in the Title View.

Note: The maximum number of Playlists on a disc is 99 while the maximum number of chapters within a playlist is 1,000. If you exceed the maximum numbers of items for a disc, all the items entered will not be recorded.

One-Touch Recording: You can begin recording with a single press of the record button. Each subsequent press of the button adds time to the recording in the following sequence: 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours. If using a DVD-RAM disc, recording can begin as quickly as one second.

Copy Protection: Some TV programs have encoded copy protection, (using CPRM--Content Protection for Recordable Media) allowing them to be recorded only once. Such programs can not be recorded onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or 3" DVD-RAM discs. To record these programs, you will need a CPRM-compatible DVD-RAM.

Finalizing Discs: Like a CD recorder, this unit can finalize a DVD-R after recording so it can be played on another DVD player (finalizing a DVD-R effectively converts it into a DVD Video). The process takes up to 15 minutes. DVD-RAM discs recorded with this unit are not finalized and cannot be played in a standard DVD player.

Playback Mode

MP3/JPEG Playback: This unit can playback MP3 music files and JPEG photo files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc with a computer. Discs must conform to ISO9660 Level 1 or 2 (except for extended formats) or Joliet formats. The compatible MP3 sampling rates include 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1 and 48kHz and the compatible compression rates range from 32 to 320kbps. This unit is not compatible with ID3 tags. JPEG files between 34 x 34 and 3840 x 2160 pixels can be played. Motion JPEG files are not compatible with this unit.

PCM Down Conversion: You can select whether you want the player to down-convert a high-resolution audio signal (96kHz or 88.2kHz sampling frequency) to 48kHz/16-bit before passing it through the digital output. If the equipment connected to this unit is capable of processing a 96kHz or 88.2kHz signal, you should turn PCM Down Conversion off. If the equipment is not capable of processing the high sampling frequency signal, you should turn down-conversion on.

Note: Signals are converted to 48kHz or 44.1kHz despite the settings if the signals have a sampling frequency of over 96kHz or 88.2kHz, or if the disc has copy protection.

Progressive Scan Output: This DVD player may be set to output a progressive scan (480p) or interlaced (480i) video signal from the component video output. Progressive-scan viewing requires a TV with a progressive scan-compatible component video input.

Playback Operations: The DMR-ES25 features the following playback operations:

  • Resume Function: When the Stop button is pressed, that position is stored in the memory. When the Play button is pressed after pressing the Stop button, playback resumes from the position where the disc was stopped. The resume function is canceled if the disc tray is opened or the Stop button is pressed a second time.
  • Pause: Press the pause button to freeze a motion picture. Press it again to restart play.
  • Search: You can fast forward or reverse through the disc. The speed increases up to 5 steps.
  • Skip: During play or while paused you can skip titles, chapters, or tracks according to the number of times the button is pressed.
  • Direct Access: Press the numbered buttons to start play from a selected title, chapter or track.
  • Quick View (RAM only): Use this to increase the playback speed to 1.3X normal speed.
  • Slow-Motion: During pause you can slow forward or reverse through the disc. There are 5 speed options.
  • Frame-by-Frame: While in the pause mode you can move frame by frame through the movie.
  • Time Slip Skipping: This function allows you to skip from 1 to 10 minutes ahead on the disc in 1 minute intervals.
  • CM Skip: Commercial Skip skips ahead approximately 1 minute on the disc.
  • Audio Change: You can change the Audio selection from Stereo, Mono L, Mon R or SAP during playback.
  • Create Chapter (RAM only): You can divide the recorded disc into chapters while you are viewing it.
  • Repeat Play: You can repeat an entire disc, chapter, group, playlist, title or track from this DVD recorder.

Picture Adjustment: You can select between the following picture modes.

  • Normal: default setting
  • Soft: soft picture with fewer video artifacts
  • Fine: details are sharper
  • Cinema: mellows movies and enhances detail in dark scenes

DNR: Turn this function on to reduce noise and picture degradation.

Dialogue Enhancer: This feature makes dialogue easier to hear by raising the volume of the center channel. Note: Dialogue Enhancer only works with Dolby Digital-encoded DVDs that have at least three channels of recorded audio, where the dialogue information is recorded in the center channel.

Virtual Surround Sound (V.S.S.): If you are only using two front speakers in your system, this feature simulates a surround-sound environment. If you are playing a disc with surround effects recorded on it, the effects are broadened and the sound seems to come from virtual speakers on either side.

Note: For use with Dolby Digital DVDs 2-channel or over only.

Multi-Angle Function: This function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a number of different angles. Note: This function is limited to DVDs recorded with multiple camera angles.

Auto Power-Off: The unit can be set to turn off automatically if left in stop mode for approximately 2 hours or 6 hours. This feature can also be turned off.

Parental Control: You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password to prevent certain content to be played back on your DVD recorder.

Black Level Control: You can adjust the black level of the input signal by selecting "lighter" or "darker." For the output signal, you can select one of two choices of black level when using composite or S-Video outputs: "Lighter" or "Darker," or one of three choices when using the component video outputs: "Lighter," "Normal," or "Darker."

Speaker Setting: If you connect the DVD recorder with an HDMI cable to your amplifier and your receiver does not allow for speaker adjustment, you can change your speaker settings using this unit. You can make the following speaker adjustments with this recorder.

  • Speaker Presence and Size: You can select between No (not using that particular speaker), Large (using speakers that support under 100 Hz) or Small (using speakers that do not support under 100 Hz).
  • Subwoofer: "Yes" or "No". If the subwoofer is set to "No" the front speakers will automatically be set to Large.
  • Delay Time: You can adjust the delay time for the center and surround speakers if they are at different distances from the main listening location than the front speakers.

Still Picture Mode

Still Picture Functions: You can view back your still images from your SD Card or Disc.

  • Album View: You can view up to 12 still images at a time on your TV screen.
  • Slideshow: You can display your still pictures one by one with constant intervals in a slideshow fashion.
  • Rotate: You can rotate your still pictures left to right.
  • Zoom: You can zoom in and out of your still pictures. This function is only available for still pictures smaller than 640 x 480 pixels.
  • Properties: You can display the shooting date and other information you saved when taking the picture by pressing Status button twice.

Album and Picture Operation: You can edit the still pictures or albums from your SD Card or DVD-R with this DVD recorder. You can use SD Cards with capacities from 8 MB to 2 GB. You cannot edit still pictures recorded on CD-R or CD-RW.

  • Delete Album/Picture: once deleted, the recorded contents are lost and cannot be restored
  • Album Name: give names to albums with up to 36 characters
  • Protection Setup: this will protect the still picture or album from accidental deletion on this unit only
  • Print Order (DPOF): select individual pictures for printing and specify the number of prints to be made
  • Create Album: create an album by selecting from the pictures on the SD Card

Copy Still Pictures: You can copy pictures from SD to DVD or DVD to SD using this recorder.

  • Copy Direction: select between copying from SD card to DVD or DVD to SD card
  • Create List: create a list of pictures to copy from by selecting individual still images or by selecting individual folders

Remote Control

Remote Control: The supplied remote (EUR7659Y20) is pre-coded to operate the basic functions of several different brands of TVs, so you can control the DVD player and the basic functions of your television with one remote. The remote control code can be set to one of three codes so this remote doesn't interfere with other Panasonic DVD equipment in the same system.

HDMI (HDAVI Control): HDAVI control is a convenient function that offers linked operations of this unit and a Panasonic TV or Receiver through the HDMI cable connection. You can utilize the following controls.

  • Automatic Input Switching: When play starts on the DVD recorder or when an action is taken that uses the display screen the Panasonic Television will automatically switch the input channel and display the corresponding action.
  • Power On Link: The Panasonic Television will automatically turn on when play starts on the DVD recorder or when an action is taken that uses the display screen.
  • Power Off Link: When the television is turned off, this unit will automatically turn off unless you are in the process of recording, copying, or finalizing a disc.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Front Panel:

  • A/V Inputs: The unit has a set of audio/video inputs on the front panel behind a fold-down door. The inputs include stereo audio RCA jacks, RCA composite video jack, and an S-video jack. Unlike the rear panel inputs, if you are connecting a mono source to the front panel inputs, you can use the left channel audio jack and both channels will be recorded onto the disc--no "Y" adapter is necessary.
  • DV Input: Next to the front panel A/V inputs, the DMR-ES25 features a 4-pin DV input (IEEE1384/i-LINK) for connecting a digital camcorder. The DV Auto Recording function allows you to record programs from the DV input as a title while chapters are created at each break in the images and a play list is created automatically.

Note: The DV input is a one-way connection--you cannot operate the DV equipment from the recorder.

  • SD Card Slot: The unit features a front-panel SD Card slot to view back still images recorded in JPEG or TIFF formats. You can use SD Memory cards, Multi-Media cards, and miniSD cards (optional adaptor needed).

Back Panel:

HDMI Out: The DMR-E25S feature an HDMI output that will transfer both digital audio and video in a single cable to your HD-Ready TV or compatible receiver.

Optical Digital Output: In addition to the stereo analog audio outputs, this unit has an optical digital output, compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS. To enjoy multi-channel surround sound from this output, you will need to connect a receiver/amplifier with a built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder.

Component Video Output: In addition to the composite video outputs and the S-video outputs, this unit is equipped with a set of component video outputs on the rear panel. The component video output can be set for interlaced or progressive scanning depending upon the compatibility of the connected TV.

RF Input/Output: The RF Out connection is a pass-through output for the antenna or cable signal fed to the RF In connector. When a DVD is played, the DVD audio/video signal is output through the A/V connections (composite, S-Video, component video), not the RF Out connection.

The Sony RDR-GX315 does not even come close to the Panasonic DMR-ES25

Written By Lisandro, Brooklyn, NY on Saturday, September 23, 2006

Wow what was I thinking when I ordered the Sony. Don't get me wrong, I love Sony. Actually, most of my (video) electronic gear is Sony. First of all, these two recorders cost the same. The Panasonic has several advantages which are DVD-RAM recording, DVD-R DL recording, 500 lines of resolution in 4 hour recording mode (LP), Rear S-video input, Secure Digital memory card slot and the best of all HDMI video upconversion (1080i or 720p) which looks amazing. So that being said, which would you choose? The RDR-GX315 does not a have S-video input in the rear which means you have to have cables comming in through the front of the unit if you want the best recording quality. Also for some reason the Sony sometimes has trouble playing DVD's it recorded and will give you alot of defective DVD's. Every DVD recorder will damage a disc evey once in a while. The RDR-GX315 damaged 4 out of 10 (unacceptable). The Panasonic cannot control your DV camcorder through the i.link firewire input (big deal). If you are looking for a Solid DVD recorder within the $200 price range, checkout the Panasonic DMR-ES25. You'll be thanking me for a long time.
