Features
Overview: The Panasonic
DMR-ES25S is a progressive scan, super multi-format DVD recorder with an SD Card
slot, DV input, and HDMI output with EZ sync control.
Super Multi-Format Recording and
Playback: The DMR-ES25S is incredibly versatile and format friendly. It can
record and play back about any DVD you can throw at it. Specifically, it can
record and playback the following discs.
- Recordable and Playable Discs:
DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD, and DVD+RW
- Playable Only Discs:
DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (dual layer), DVD+R (dual layer), CD, CD-DA and
CD-R/RW (including MP3 and JPEG files)
LP Mode Recording: This DVD
recorder can record an amazing 500 lines of horizontal resolution in LP mode,
which is twice the 250 lines of resolution offered by conventional DVD
recorder's LP modes. So, you get 4 hours on a single-sided DVD-R or DVD-RAM as
opposed to 2 hours and still enjoy the crisp, vibrant images with exceptional
detail that 500 lines of horizontal resolution delivers.
High Definition (1080i/720p)
Up-Conversion with HDMI: When connected to an HDMI-compatible TV via an HDMI
cable, the DVD recorder can up-convert the DVD content that you are watching to
720p or 1080i resolution (depending on your TVs display capability) so you can
enjoy beautiful, high-quality imagery in high definition.
Time Slip: The Time Slip
feature allows you to simultaneously record and play back when using DVD-RAM
discs.
Chasing Playback: With the
Chasing Playback feature you can begin watching the portion of a program that
has already been saved while the DVD recorder continues recording the remainder
of the program.
Safe-Record:
Safe-Record will save your favorite programs from being accidentally recorded
over by automatically scanning the disc for blank space before starting the
recording process.
Direct Navigator: The enhanced
Direct Navigator helps keep track of all those programs you have recorded by
displaying thumbnails of every program on the disc as you browse, making it easy
to identify the contents of each recording.
One-Touch, 2-Way Transfer: You
can dub a VHS tape to DVD by pushing a single button. So, you can easily
preserve your precious, delicate VHS tapes by transferring them to DVD, which
will provide durability and many years of enjoyment.
Advanced Progressive Scan:
Utilizing advance progressive scan playback techniques and very accurate MPEG
video decoders, this DVD recorder provides and image that faithfully represents
the image you see at your favorite movie theater.
Rapid Random Access: With this
feature you can jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or
recording right away. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space
available, the DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the
rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start
recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.
Playlist Playback: You can
perform simple non-linear video editing, such as rearranging the order of
scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections to create custom
playlists for yourself.
Built-In TV Tuner: The built in
TV tuner allows you to view and record your favorite programs from the DVD
recorder. The unit is equipped with the following channel capability.
- Antenna: VHF (2-13) and UHF
(14-69)
- Cable TV: VHF (2-13), CATV Low
Band (95-99), CATV Mid/Super Band (14-36), CATV Hyper Band (37-65), Ultra
Band (66-94/100-125), Special CATV channel (1)
Recording Mode
Selectable Recording Modes: You
can set the recorder to one of five different recording speeds; each varying in
recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP and SP
modes provides less recording time with higher quality recording and XP mode gives
you the highest quality recording. There is also the FR (Flexible Recording)
mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the
recording time and remaining space you have left on the disc.
Recording Times: The unit can
record in the following modes on both single- and double-sided discs. Recording
times for each mode and disc type are as follows:

DV Input: The DMR-ES25 is
equipped with a front panel 4-pin DV input (IEEE 1384) for connecting to and
recording from digital camcorders. When the DV Auto Recording function is used,
programs are recorded as a title, while at the same time chapters are created at
each break in the images automatically.
Note: The DV input terminal can
only be used for DV equipment only--it cannot be connected to a computer.
Scheduled Recording: You can
enter up to 16 programs up to a month in advance to record on this DVD recorder.
Each daily or weekly program is counted as one program.
Line-In NR: This feature
reduces video tape noise while copying. You can select either On, Off, or Auto.
Title Operations: You can
create and modify titles on your disc.
- Delete Title: once a title
is deleted, the recorded contents are lost and cannot be restored
- Properties: information
such as time and date are displayed
- Title Name: you can give
names to recorded titles up 44 characters
- Protection: when this is
set it will protect your title from accidental deletion
- Shorten Title: remove
unnecessary parts of the recording such as commercials
- Change Thumbnail: change
the image to be shown as a thumbnail picture in the Title View
- Divide Title: divide a
single title into two separate titles
Chapter Operations: You can
create and modify chapters within a Title.
- Delete Chapter: once
deleted, the recorded contents are lost and cannot be restored
- Create Chapter: select the
point where you want to start a new chapter while viewing the title
- Combine Chapters: the
selected chapter and following chapter are combined
Playlist Operations (RAM only):
You can create your own custom playlist for your disc.

chapters within the title of your DVD-RAM disc to create a custom playlist
- Copy: the copied playlist
becomes the newest one in the playlist view screen
- Playlist Name: name your
playlist with up to 64 characters
- Change Thumbnail: change
the image to be shown as a thumbnail picture in the Title View.
Note: The maximum
number of Playlists on a disc is 99 while the maximum number of chapters
within a playlist is 1,000. If you exceed the maximum numbers of items
for a disc, all the items entered will not be recorded.
One-Touch Recording: You can
begin recording with a single press of the record button. Each subsequent press
of the button adds time to the recording in the following sequence: 30 minutes,
60 minutes, 90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours. If using a DVD-RAM disc,
recording can begin as quickly as one second.
Copy Protection: Some TV
programs have encoded copy protection, (using CPRM--Content Protection for
Recordable Media) allowing them to be recorded only once. Such programs can not
be recorded onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or 3" DVD-RAM discs. To record these
programs, you will need a CPRM-compatible DVD-RAM.
Finalizing Discs: Like a CD recorder,
this unit can finalize a DVD-R after recording so it can be played on another
DVD player (finalizing a DVD-R effectively converts it into a DVD Video). The
process takes up to 15 minutes. DVD-RAM discs recorded with this unit
are not finalized and cannot be played in a standard DVD player.
Playback
Mode
MP3/JPEG Playback: This unit can
playback MP3 music files and JPEG photo files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc with a computer. Discs must
conform to ISO9660 Level 1 or 2 (except for extended formats) or Joliet formats. The compatible
MP3 sampling rates include 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1 and 48kHz and the compatible
compression rates range from 32 to 320kbps. This unit is not compatible with ID3
tags. JPEG files between 34 x 34 and 3840 x 2160 pixels can be played. Motion
JPEG files are not compatible with this unit.
PCM Down
Conversion: You can
select whether you want the player to down-convert a high-resolution audio
signal (96kHz or 88.2kHz sampling frequency) to 48kHz/16-bit before passing it
through the digital output. If the equipment connected to this unit is capable
of processing a 96kHz or 88.2kHz signal, you should turn PCM Down
Conversion off. If the equipment is not capable of processing the high sampling
frequency signal, you should turn down-conversion on.
Note:
Signals are converted to 48kHz or 44.1kHz despite the settings if the signals
have a sampling frequency of over 96kHz or 88.2kHz, or if the disc has copy
protection.
Progressive Scan Output: This
DVD player may be set to output a progressive scan (480p) or interlaced (480i) video signal
from the component video output. Progressive-scan viewing
requires a TV with a progressive scan-compatible component video input.
Playback Operations: The
DMR-ES25 features the following playback operations:
- Resume
Function: When the Stop button is pressed, that position is
stored in the memory. When the Play button is pressed after pressing the Stop
button, playback resumes from the position where the disc was stopped. The
resume function is canceled if the disc tray is opened or the Stop button is
pressed a second time.
- Pause: Press the pause
button to freeze a motion picture. Press it again to restart play.
- Search: You can fast
forward or reverse through the disc. The speed increases up to 5 steps.

that have at
least three channels of recorded audio, where the dialogue information is
recorded in the center channel.
Virtual Surround
Sound (V.S.S.): If you are only using two front speakers in your
system, this feature simulates a surround-sound environment. If you are playing
a disc with surround effects recorded on it, the effects are broadened and the
sound seems to come from virtual speakers on either side.
Note: For use with Dolby Digital
DVDs 2-channel or over only.
Multi-Angle Function: This
function allows you to choose the viewing angle of scenes that were shot from a
number of different angles. Note: This function is limited to DVDs
recorded with multiple camera angles.
Auto Power-Off: The unit can be
set to turn off automatically if left in stop mode for approximately 2 hours or
6 hours. This feature can also be turned off.
Parental Control: You can
select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit
password to prevent certain content to be played back on your DVD recorder.
Black Level Control: You can
adjust the black level of the input signal by selecting "lighter" or "darker."
For the output signal, you can select one of two choices of black level when
using composite or S-Video outputs: "Lighter" or "Darker," or one of three
choices when using the component video outputs: "Lighter," "Normal," or
"Darker."
Speaker Setting: If you connect
the DVD recorder with an HDMI cable to your amplifier and your receiver does not
allow for speaker adjustment, you can change your speaker settings using this
unit. You can make the following speaker adjustments with this recorder.
- Speaker Presence and Size:
You can select between No (not using that particular speaker), Large (using
speakers that support under 100 Hz) or Small (using speakers that do not
support under 100 Hz).

Remote
Control
Remote
Control: The supplied remote (EUR7659Y20) is pre-coded to operate the basic functions of several
different brands of TVs, so you can control the DVD player and the basic
functions of your television with one remote. The remote control code can be set to one
of three codes so this remote doesn't interfere with other Panasonic DVD
equipment in the same system.
HDMI (HDAVI Control): HDAVI
control is a convenient function that offers linked operations of this unit and
a Panasonic TV or Receiver through the HDMI cable connection. You can utilize
the following controls.
- Automatic Input Switching:
When play starts on the DVD recorder or when an action is taken that uses
the display screen the Panasonic Television will automatically switch the
input channel and display the corresponding action.
- Power On Link: The
Panasonic Television will automatically turn on when play starts on the DVD
recorder or when an action is taken that uses the display screen.
- Power Off Link: When the
television is turned off, this unit will automatically turn off unless you
are in the process of recording, copying, or finalizing a disc.
Inputs
and Outputs Notes
Front Panel:
- A/V Inputs: The unit
has a set of audio/video inputs on the front panel behind a fold-down door. The inputs
include stereo audio
RCA jacks, RCA composite video jack, and an S-video jack. Unlike the rear
panel inputs, if you are connecting a mono source to the front panel inputs, you
can use the left channel audio jack and both channels will be recorded onto the
disc--no "Y" adapter is necessary.
- DV Input: Next to the
front panel A/V inputs, the DMR-ES25 features a 4-pin DV input (IEEE1384/i-LINK) for
connecting a digital camcorder. The DV Auto Recording function allows you to record
programs from the DV input as a title while chapters are created at each break
in the images and a play list is created automatically.
Note: The DV
input is a one-way connection--you cannot operate the DV equipment from the
recorder.
- SD Card Slot: The unit
features a front-panel SD Card slot to view back still images recorded in
JPEG or TIFF formats. You can use SD Memory cards, Multi-Media cards, and
miniSD cards (optional adaptor needed).
Back Panel:
HDMI Out: The DMR-E25S feature
an HDMI output that will transfer both digital audio and video in a single cable
to your HD-Ready TV or compatible receiver.
Optical Digital Output: In
addition to the stereo analog audio outputs, this unit has an optical digital
output, compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS. To enjoy multi-channel surround
sound from this output, you will need to connect a receiver/amplifier with a built-in Dolby
Digital/DTS decoder.
Component Video Output:
In addition to the composite video outputs and the S-video outputs, this unit is
equipped with a set of component video outputs on the rear panel. The component video output can be set for interlaced or progressive
scanning depending upon the compatibility of the connected TV.
RF Input/Output: The RF Out connection
is a pass-through output for the antenna or cable signal fed to the RF In
connector. When a DVD is played, the DVD audio/video signal is output
through the A/V connections (composite, S-Video, component video), not the RF Out connection.
