Our take on the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK

It's easy to record your favorite shows to DVD or VHS with the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK. This versatile recorder's built-in tuners let you enjoy both analog and digital TV broadcasts. Plus, if you have an HDMI-equipped HDTV, this Panasonic can upconvert DVDs to better match your set's high-resolution screen, so all your discs will look their best.

The DMR-EZ48K also makes it easy to back up your home movies. Its dual-deck design gives you the option of dubbing non-copy-protected material from VHS videotapes to DVD, or from DVD to VHS. The DMR-EZ48K can record to standard write-once and rewritable blank DVDs. This recorder also uses rewritable DVD-RAM discs, which provide DVR-like conveniences such as "Chasing Playback" — watching the beginning of a program while it finishes up recording. DVD-RAM discs also let you view a program you've already recorded while simultaneously capturing another.

The front panel looks very clean, but a flip-down door hides a several connections that are especially useful for owners of digital cameras and camcorders. The built-in SD™ memory card slot and USB port make it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the front-panel slot to view images, or connect your camera to the USB port. If you own a digital camcorder with a DV port (also known as "IEEE 1394 or FireWire®), the DMR-EZ48K's DV input lets you easily record your home movies onto a recordable DVD.

General Features

Overview: The Panasonic DMR-EZ48V is a Progressive Scan DVD Recorder with VHS VCR, Digital Tuner, 1080p Up-Conversion via HDMI Simple Connection, VIERALink, SD Memory Card Slot, USB Terminal and Super Multi-Format Recording and Playback.

Digital Tuner: The integrated high-performance hybrid digital tuner is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. The built-in tuner allows the DMR-EZ48V to receive and record analog and terrestrial digital channels (High Definition programming is "down-converted" and recorded in Standard Definition). The integrated hybrid digital tuner provides the following channels:

  • Analog TV Channels: 2 to 69
  • Analog CATV Channel: 1 to 135
  • Digital TV Channel: 2 to 69
  • Digital CATV Channel: 1 to 135

1080p Up-Conversion: By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD (Standard Definition) format data is up-converted to 1080 x 1920p HD (High Definition) format video data. This conversion increases the richness of the original data by almost six fold, producing the highest possible image quality when viewing content on a large-screen HDTV.

Progressive/24P: When this unit is connected to a TV supporting 1080/24p output via an HDMI cable, this unit displays each frame at 1/24 second intervals (the frame interval originally recorded in the film) thus faithfully reproducing the original cinema image.

Front-Panel USB Port and SD-Card Slot: The Panasonic DMR-EZ48V DVD recorder is equipped with a front-panel SD Memory Card slot and USB terminal, which makes it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use a USB cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you are ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos.

  • USB Port: The DMR-EZ48V is also equipped with a front-panel USB type-A port which supports USB mass storage class devices up to 32 GB. The unit supports playback of MP3 audio files, JPEG still images and DivX video recorded onto a USB mass storage device with FAT16 or FAT32 file system.
  • SD Card Slot: The Panasonic DVD recorder features a standard SD card slot which supports SD (8MB-2GB) and SDHC (4GB-16GB) memory cards, as well as mini-SD and micro-SD memory cards (with adapter) for JPEG still image playback. This unit is compatible with SD memory Cards that meet SD Card Specifications FAT 12 and FAT 16 formats, as well as SDHC Memory Cards in FAT 32 format.

MP3/JPEG/DivX Playback: The Panasonic DMR-EZ48V supports playback of MP3, JPEG, and DivX files.

  • MP3 Playback: The Panasonic DMR-EZ2K will playback MP3 (32-320 kbps) audio files recorded on DVD-R, DVD-R DL, CD-R, and CD-RW discs, as well as USB memory using the unit's front-panel USB port. This unit can recognize up to 99 folders and 999 files. This unit is not compatible with ID3 tag information.

For the output signal, you can select one of two choices of black level when using composite or S-Video outputs: "Lighter" or "Darker," or one of three choices when using the component video outputs: Lighter, Normal, or Darker.

Parental Rating: The V-chip system used in this unit allows you to limit viewing and recording of certain programs that may contain scenes unsuitable for children. If the unit start receiving a broadcast with the set rating information, a password screen appears and you will be unable to view or record until you enter the password. You can view or record after entering your password.

Universal Design: The DMR-EZ48V DVD recorder/VCR combo was designed in compliance with Panasonic's Universal Design principles. Frequently used buttons (Power, Open/Close) are located at the top of the main unit to make them easier to see when the unit is placed in a rack and you need to look down when operating it. Both the remote control and graphical user interface (GUI) were designed for easy use by everyone, based on the results of a Panasonic survey.

WORKS,BUT NOT USER FRIENDLY

Written By HOPEA, LEESBURG,FL on Wednesday, February 08, 2012

This unit works well, but it is not user friendly.Read the manual and keep it handy. The unit is large so that I have it on a table behind my lcd. It lags in response and sometimes takes 3 or 4 remote commands to get to the desired function. Over the years I have owned a Magnavox,Samsung andthis one- this is my least liked. IT DOES DO AS NEEDED WITH A WONDERFUL PICTURE -the lags and many remote commands make me sorry I bought it.
Pros:
Does as needed, many input selections and pretty clear recording
Cons:
Not user friendly. It lags and takes mulitple remote commands to go through the features. Also a bit to large and heavy. Must point the remote directly to the front.

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK

Written By SteveM, Weaverville, NC on Monday, February 06, 2012

Short and to the point - this combo DVD/VCR player and recorder works well. There are not many combo recorders still being produced so the variety of new models to choose from is limited. It makes excellent copies of factory produced tapes that can be copied and, even better, copies with no loss or even improved quality of my own home-made copies of programming.
Pros:
As many of the other reviewers state: read the manual. Also, make notes or copy the instructions that owners have learned from their experience. Extremely helpful and will make the use of this recorder relatively easy and fool-proof. The DVD system works well and the VCR works well with the limitations given in the "cons" section below.
Cons:
As one reviewer noted on this product, the VCR does not track many older tapes that well. I got around this by using my older VCR with that has an excellent electronic stabilizing system to input a signal to the recorder. The manual system the EZ48VK provides did not do much to eliminate noise and roll. Other than that - obvious - it will not (at this point in my use of it) copy factory tapes with anti-copying info built into the tape itself.

Slow to get to the recording process. Machine sometimes freezes and I have to reset. And if I hit the power button on the remote by mistake the time it takes to recycle seems like an eternity.

Easy to Use

Written By Windy Hill, Los Angeles, Ca on Saturday, January 28, 2012

This Panasonic VCR-DVD recorder/player replaced one of our Panasonic DVD recorder/players. The older DVD unit had a firmware bug. The new VCR/DVD has that bug solved. The unit is easy to program. It is easy to get the "direct navigator" content display to work. The old unit was slow to read a disc directory, sometimes. The new one is not.
Pros:
Easy to set up. Commands are just like our Panasonic DVD.
Cons:
A little pricey.

This product is not recommended

Written By Price, Genoa, IL on Tuesday, January 10, 2012

This product serves no useful function for the market for which it was designed.

I have spent the better part of 18 months pushing the manual reset button and unplugging the unit to get it back on-line. The problem appears to be software related. When a problem occurs it dutifully shuts itself down for a mandatory self-check and requires a complete 3-5 minute reboot of the system. Too fast operation of the controller buttons appear to trigger some of the lock-ups. Software updates have not cured the problem.

Discs which are just formatted are refused on re-insertion with a message stating incompatibility.

This super-delux Panasonic product isn't ready for prime time.
Pros:
Versitile input and output selection Past reliability of Panasonic products.
Cons:
Functionality

Not Worth the Money

Written By WritingBuf, Flushing, NY on Sunday, October 30, 2011

Not worth the money. Purchased this unit only after after my Insignia DVD/VHS Combo failed after six years. I expected more from Panasonic. Lacking features. Look somewhere else for a usable DVD/VHS unit. I'm should have researched before purchase.
Pros:
It recorded.
Cons:
Not intuitive; Cannot edit recordings; MUST finalize to view on other DVD units;

No IR Interface

Written By Ed S, Wilmington NC on Thursday, September 29, 2011

This is a good unit but you cannot place it put in a cabinet or equipment closet as it will not work with a distributed IR system such as Xantech. It requires line of sight. Only response I got from Panasonic was sorry for the Inconvenience so be aware of where you will use it.

Tape Copying

Written By YettieRed, Kansas on Monday, September 12, 2011

I purchased this to copy all my old family videos to DVD. It does a good job and is easy to operate once I read the instructions. I have quite a few old tapes and I am surprised at the quality I am getting from them.
