Our take on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25

by Meredith Krebs
Panasonic

Today's point-and-shoot cameras make great pictures easier than ever

From baby's first steps, to that dream vacation in the islands, these cameras make it easy to capture life's greatest hits. Today's cameras have helpful automatic features, like face detection and scene recognition that make shooting more foolproof than ever. And they all have plenty of megapixels for detailed photos that stay sharp, even when you enlarge and print them.

When life doesn't stop moving, a camera that can keep up
You're juggling kids, carpools, endless shopping lists and after school activities, so you need a camera that's easy to use on the run and snaps great photos of your family. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FH25 packs some powerful features into a compact digital camera that fits easily into a handbag or pocket. It also shoots impressive 720p HD video when your kids do something that you've just got to share on YouTube™.

Flattering portraits of all your loved ones
The 'FH25's face detection function automatically detects any faces in your frame and optimizes the focus and exposure settings to give you stunning portraits. It prevents the blurry faces that can happen when a camera focuses on something in front of or behind the subject. The 'FH25 also keeps faces from appearing dark when shooting indoors or against a light source. It even detects up to 15 faces at a time, so you can snap a sharp photo of the whole soccer team. And the built-in optical image stabilization kicks in to compensate for any shake caused by an unsteady head, so you get clear, sharp photos even when you're zoomed in on your subject.

Clear, natural photos without motion-blur
Just because your days sometimes go by in a blur doesn't mean you have to settle for blurry photos. When you're shooting in auto mode, Intelligent Exposure prevents images from getting washed out from too much backlighting, and it brightens darkened areas in your frame. It'll also automatically adjusts the ISO (sensitivity) setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and light conditions in your scene. So when the 'FH25 detects a subject in motion, it'll raise the ISO setting and increase the shutter speed to prevent motion blur. On the other hand, when your subject is still and no movement is detected, it uses a lower ISO setting to take beautiful, more natural-looking photos with less noise. See more info on this item

    Features

Recording Media: The DMC-FH25 records images and movies onto its internal memory (approximately 70 MB), or on SD Memory Cards, SDHC, and SDXC cards. The camera is compatible with SD cards from 8 MB to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards from 48 GB to 64 GB. Pictures may be copied between the memory card and the built-in memory, if desired.

Lens: This camera is equipped with a Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens. Its 5-40mm focal length is equivalent to 28mm to 224mm in 35mm film photography. The focusing distance is 1.64' (19.68") to infinity (Wide), 6.56' to infinity (Tele), and as close as 2" in Macro mode.

Extended Optical/Digital Zoom: The 28-224mm focal length of the lens gives it an optical zoom of 8x. The camera's extended optical zoom can increase the zoom up to 18x, depending upon the picture size. In addition, the Intelligent Zoom is approximately 1.3x the optical or extended optical zoom, and the digital zoom extends the focal length of the optical, extended optical, or intelligent zoom by another 4x.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 1/2.33" CCD image sensor with approximately 16.6-million total pixels and 16.1-million effective pixels.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG in 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9 aspect ratio. The camera can also record HD and SD movies in QuickTime Motion JPEG in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio. You can choose from the following resolutions for still images and movies:

    • Still Images:
      • 4:3 Aspect Ratio:
        • 4608 x 3456 (16M)
        • 3648 x 2736 (10M)
        • 2560 x 1920 (5M)
        • 2048 x 1536 (3M)
        • 640 x 480 (0.3M)
      • 3:2 Aspect Ratio:
        • 4608 x 3072 (14M)
      • 16:9 Aspect Ratio:
        • 4608 x 2592 (12M)
    • Movies:
      • HD: 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps (16:9)
      • VGA: 640 x 480 @ 30 fps (4:3)
      • QVGA: 320 x 240 @ 30 fps (4:3)

Mega Optical Image Stabilizer: Mega O.I.S. technology helps solve the problem of unintentional hand movement that can result in blurry images, particularly with telephoto shots. The built-in Venus Engine VI controls the shifting of the blur-stopping lens for higher accuracy and correction effect. Mega O.I.S can be turned on or off manually, or is set to On in certain shooting modes.

Battery: The FH25 is powered by the NCA-YN101G rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (3.6 volts/660 mAh). A fully charged battery gives you approximately 125 minutes of recording time, or about 250 images. Playback time using the LCD monitor is approximately 200 minutes. The battery takes approximately 115 minutes to fully charge with the supplied DE-A91B battery charger. The optional DMW-BCK7PP battery can be used as a spare or replacement battery.

Optional AC Adapter/DC Coupler: If you wish to operate the camera using ordinary household current, you will need the optional DMW-AC5PP AC adapter, along with the DMW-DCC10 DC coupler. The AC adapter cannot be used alone, as the DC Coupler provides a plug-in jack for the AC adapter. This is helpful if you have the camera connected to your computer or printer for a long time, or playing back photos in a slide show.

LCD Monitor: The DMC-FH25 has a 2.7" TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 230,000 dots. It has approximately 100% field of view.

Flash: The FH25 has a built-in flash with a range of approximately 1.97' to 19' in Wide Angle, and 3.28' to 10.4' in Telephoto. Available flash modes include:

    • Auto: The flash is automatically activated when the recording conditions make it necessary.
    • Auto/Red-eye Reduction: A pre-flash is activated before the main flash to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.
    • Forced Flash On: The flash is activated every time regardless of the recording conditions.
    • Forced Flash On/Red-eye Reduction: The flash is activated every time with a pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
    • Slow Sync/Red-eye Reduction: Same as Slow Sync, but with pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
    • Forced Flash Off: Flash is not activated regardless of the recording conditions.

Shooting Modes: Using the top-mounted Mode Dial and the menu, the FH25 allows you to choose from the following shooting modes:

    • Intelligent Auto Mode: Optimum settings are made automatically. The camera identifies the scene and sets one of the following: i-Portrait, i-Scenery, i-Macro, i-Night Portrait, i-Night Scenery, or i-Sunset.
    • Normal: The camera allows you to make your own settings for zoom, flash, picture brightness, close-ups, or coloring.
    • My Scene: You can save the most frequently used scene mode under "My Scene".
    • Scene Mode: allows you to select from different scene modes using the menu. Available Scene Modes include:
      • Portrait: allows you to make the subject stand out from an unfocused background and adjust the exposure and the hue to achieve a healthy complexion on the subject

      • Food: for taking pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants, etc.
      • Party: allows you to take a picture in a dim room (e.g. a wedding reception, a party, a banquet in a bar, etc.) clearly. The shutter speed or the exposure is automatically adjusted according to the brightness of the room.
      • Candlelight: brings out the atmosphere of a candlelit room
      • Baby1/Baby2: two selectable settings for taking pictures of a baby; you can use text stamp to show baby's name, birthday, or age

      • High Dynamic: Records pictures with bright and dark regions of the scene expressed with suitable brightness when looking into the sun, at night, or in similar circumstances.
      • Photo Frame: superimposes a frame over the image
    • Motion Picture Mode: for taking motion pictures in HD or SD.

Self Timer: The self timer is useful when you want to include yourself in the picture when recording still images. The delay time for single shots can be set to 10 seconds or 2 seconds. You can also use the self timer in Burst mode to take 3 pictures after the delay and in Flash Burst mode to take 5 pictures.

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -2 to +2 in 1/3-step increments.

Burst Mode: Pictures are taken continuously while the shutter button is pressed. In Normal Burst mode, approximately 1.4 pictures per second are taken, up to the remaining capacity of the built-in memory or memory card.

In the Intelligent ISO setting, the camera will automatically set the optimal ISO sensitivity, in a range up to 1600, according to the movement of the subject and the surrounding brightness. In the Preset ISO mode, you can select 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600.

Metering: The camera measures the most suitable exposure by judging the allocation of brightness on the whole screen automatically.

Color Modes: You can use these modes to make your pictures softer or sharper, or change the colors for a special effect. Some color modes are only available when shooting in the Intelligent Auto Mode or Normal Picture Mode. Available color modes include Standard, Happy, Natural, Vivid, B/W, Sepia, Cool, and Warm.

Auto Focus Mode: You can choose one of the following AF modes:

    • Face Detection: Camera automatically detects a person's face, adjusting the exposure and focus to fit the face, regardless of what portion of the picture it is in. (maximum of 15 areas)
    • AF Tracking: Focus can be adjusted to a specified subject, and follow the subject even if it moves.
    • 11-area Focusing: Up to 11 points for each AF area can be focused. This is effective when the subject isn't in the center of the screen.
    • 1-area Focusing: Camera focuses on the subject in AF area on the center of the screen. Position and size of AF area can be changed.

Still Image Playback: You can manually display images one at a time, 12 at a time, or 30 images at a time.

    • Calendar Playback: You can display pictures by recording date using the calendar playback function. If there are multiple pictures with the same recording date, the first picture recorded on that date is displayed.

Playback Zoom: You can view the picture at the original size, or enlarge the picture to 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Using the arrow buttons, you can move the position of the zoomed picture in the monitor.

Auto Review: After an image is recorded, it will appear in the LCD screen for a preset number of seconds for reviewing. Auto Review lets you choose one of the following settings: Off, 1 second, 2 seconds, or Hold.

Resizing Pictures: This function is useful if you want to reduce the file size of the picture in cases when it needs to be attached to an e-mail or uploaded to a website. Once an image is resized, you can choose to keep the original image. You can set up to 50 pictures to be resized at one time.

Cropping Pictures: This function lets you trim unnecessary parts of the recorded picture. Motion pictures and pictures with text stamps cannot be trimmed.

Auto Power Off: The camera is automatically turned off if it has not been used for a predetermined amount of time. The amount of time can be set to 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes.

    Fine point and shoot camera

Written By rrey, garland, tx on Sunday, January 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took this camera on a vacation and put it through a good workout. It took good pictures in all lighting conditions. Most pics were taken in the Af mode but also experimented with scene modes. Good pictures overall. Functions were intuitive so i didn't have to open the manual on cd, which would have been a hassle. Videos looked good especially using the hd setting. I only wished the zoom was functional. Got at least 200 shots per charge.
    Pros:
Easy to use with intuitve interface. Lots of features for the price. Good battery life. Compact size that fits in your pocket.
