Panasonic

Our take on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1K Kit

Looking for a camera with gorgeous picture quality and flexible controls, but less bulk and cost than a high-end SLR? Panasonic's DMC-GF1K has you covered. Yet, the 'GF1 sports a compact body that's easier to carry around than most SLR cameras out there. Features

Overview: The Panasonic DMC-GF1K is a digital still camera with interchangeable lenses in an ultra-compact package. The camera kit comes with a 14-45mm zoom lens.

Recording Media: The DMC-GF1K records images onto SD Memory Cards and SDHC Memory Cards. The camera is compatible with SD cards from 8 MB to 2 GB formatted using FAT 12 or FAT 16 format, and SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB using FAT 32.

Note: The camera comes with no memory cards, and does not have built-in internal memory.

14-45mm Lens: This camera kit comes with a LUMIX G Vario 14-45mm/F3.5-5.6 ASPH./Mega O.I.S. lens. The lens has a Micro Four Thirds mount and comes with a "flower-shaped" lens hood. Its 14-45mm focal length is equivalent to 28mm to 90mm in 35mm film photography. The focusing distance is 0.99' to infinity. The GF1K can accept other Lumix lenses with the Micro Four Thirds mount.

Extended Optical/Digital Zoom: The 14-45mm focal length of the supplied lens gives it an optical zoom of approximately 3.2x. The camera's extended optical zoom can increase the zoom by a maximum of 2x. The digital zoom can be set to 2x or 4x in the menu. Using the maximum digital zoom of 4x, the extended optical zoom of 2x, and the optical zoom of 3.2x, the total overall zoom possible is 25.6x.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 4/3" (17.3mm x 13mm) Live MOS image sensor with approximately 13.06-million total pixels and 12.1-million effective pixels.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW formats. The camera can also record HD movies in AVHCD Lite (MPEG4 video/H.264 audio) for playback on your HDTV using an HDMI connection or SD movies in Motion JPEG format with audio for playback on your PC.

Image Quality: You can set the image quality as follows:

  • Fine: Low compression; gives priority to picture quality
  • Standard: High compression; gives priority to the number of recordable pictures
  • RAW: Uncompressed; must be processed on a PC
  • RAW + Standard: In addition to the RAW (uncompressed) image, the camera takes a standard equivalent JPEG image simultaneously
  • RAW + Fine: In addition to the RAW (uncompressed) image, the camera takes a fine equivalent JPEG image simultaneously

Image Resolution/Compression: You can change the resolution and compression settings to suit the purpose of the image you're about to shoot. You can choose from the following resolutions for still images:

  • 4:3 Aspect Ratio:
    • 4000 x 3000 (12M): Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2816 x 2112 (5.9M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2048 x 1536 (3.1M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
  • 3:2 Aspect Ratio:
    • 4000 x 2672 (10.7M): Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2816 x 1880 (5.3M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2048 x 1360 (2.8M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio:
    • 4000 x 2248 (9M): Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2816 x 1584 (4.5M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 1920 x 1080 (2.1M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
  • 1:1 Aspect Ratio:
    • 2992 x 2992 (9M): Fine, Standard, RAW, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 2112 x 2112 (4.5M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard
    • 1504 x 1504 (2.3M): Fine, Standard, RAW + Fine, RAW + Standard

Motion Pictures: In addition, you can shoot motion pictures in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, at the following resolutions and frame rates:

  • AVCHD Lite (HD) (16:9):
    • SH: 1280 x 720, 60 fps, 17 Mbps
    • H: 1280 x 720, 60 fps, 13 Mbps
    • L: 1280 x 720, 60 fps, 9 Mbps
  • Motion JPEG:
    • HD (16:9): 1280 x 720, 30 fps
    • WVGA (16:9): 848 x 480, 30 fps
    • VGA (4:3): 640 x 480, 30 fps
    • QVGA (4:3): 320 x 240, 30 fps

MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer: MEGA O.I.S. technology helps solve the problem of unintentional hand movement that can result in blurry images, particularly with telephoto shots. (Note: The supplied 14-45mm lens supports the stabilizer function, however, the optional 20mm/F1.7 lens does not.) You can choose from the following modes:

  • Mode 1: The stabilizer operates continuously and can assist during photo composition
  • Mode 2: The stabilizer function is in standby and activates at the moment the shutter captures the image. This mode offers a greater degree of stabilization.
  • Mode 3: Camera shake is corrected for up/down movements. This mode ideal for panning.
  • Off: When image stabilization is not desired or when using the camera with a tripod

Battery: The GF1K is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (DMW-BLB13PP). When used with the supplied 14-45mm lens, you get approximately 175 minutes of recording time, or about 350 images, using the 3.0" LCD monitor. Playback time using the LCD monitor is approximately 290 minutes. The battery takes approximately 155 minutes to fully charge with the supplied DE-A49B battery charger. You can also operate the camera on standard household current when the optional DMW-DCC3 DC cable is attached to the camera and battery charger.

LCD Monitor: The DMC-GF1K has a 3" TFT color LCD monitor featuring approximately 460,000 pixels. It has approximately 100% field of view.

Optional External Viewfinder: An optional external live viewfinder (DMW-LVF1, sold separately) attaches to the camera's hot shoe and allows you to hold the camera up to your eye to frame your subject as you record. The LVF1 has a 0° to 90° adjustable angle so you can view the subject even when shooting at a low camera angle. A built-in diopter allows you to adjust the focus of the viewfinder to suit your vision. Because the LVF1 uses the hot shoe, you cannot use the external viewfinder with an external flash.

Pop-up Flash: The GF1K has a pop-up flash with a range of approximately 3.28' to 11.2' when the 14-45mm lens is used. (The flash range is greater when the optional 20mm/F1.7 lens is used.) Available flash modes include:

  • Auto: The flash is automatically activated when the recording conditions make it necessary.
  • Auto/Red-eye Reduction: A pre-flash is activated before the main flash to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.
  • Forced Flash On: The flash is activated every time regardless of the recording conditions.
  • Forced Flash On/Red-eye Reduction: The flash is activated every time with a pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
  • Slow Sync: When taking pictures against a dark background landscape, this feature will slow the shutter speed when the flash is activated to make the background appear brighter.
  • Slow Sync/Red-eye Reduction: Same as Slow Sync, but with pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
  • Forced Flash Off: Flash is not activated regardless of the recording conditions.

Mode Dial: The top-mounted mode dial allows you to choose from the following camera modes:

  • Intelligent Auto Mode: the camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and recording conditions. Recommended for beginners.
  • Program AE: the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject
  • Aperture-priority AE: the shutter speed is automatically determined by the aperture value you set
  • Shutter-priority AE: the aperture value is automatically determined by the shutter speed you set
  • Manual Exposure: the exposure is adjusted by the aperture value and the shutter speed, which are manually adjusted
  • Custom Mode: allows you to take pictures with one of two sets of previously selected settings (C1, C2)
  • Motion Picture Mode: this mode allows you to record motion images with audio
  • Scene Mode: allows you to select from 16 different scene modes using the menu:
    • Portrait: allows you to make the subject stand out from an unfocused background and adjust the exposure and the hue to achieve a healthy complexion on the subject
    • Soft Skin: use for taking pictures of people outdoors during the daytime; enables the texture of their skin to appear even softer than with Portrait mode
    • Scenery: allows you to take a picture of a wide landscape
    • Architecture: for taking sharp pictures of architecture. Guide lines are displayed.
    • Sports: allows you to take pictures of a fast moving subject or sports scenes
    • Peripheral Defocus: This mode makes it easy to pick out the subject on which to focus, and blurs the background to make the subject stand out.

    • Night Scenery: for taking vivid pictures of a landscape at night; use of a tripod recommended
    • Illuminations: for photographing illuminations; use of a tripod recommended
    • Baby1/Baby2: two selectable settings for taking pictures of a baby; you can use text stamp to show baby's name, birthday, or age
    • Pet: for photographing your pet; you can use text stamp to show pet's name or age

    • Sunset: for taking pictures of a sunset (red colors accentuated)
  • My Color Mode: Once the Mode Dial is set to My Color Mode, you can use the rear dial to choose from the following:
    • Expressive: A pop-art style image effect that emphasizes colors.
    • Retro: A soft image effect that give the appearance of a tarnished photograph.
    • Pure: Uses a cool bright light to give a feeling of freshness.
    • Elegant: Creates a tranquil atmosphere and projects a feeling of stateliness
    • Monochrome: Uses tones characteristic of black and white photography.
    • Dynamic Art: An impressive image effect that pictures dark areas to bright areas with appropriate brightness, together with enhancements on colors.
    • Silhouette: Enhances the subject in the shade as a black silhouette by utilizing the background colors of the sky or sunset.
    • Custom: The color effects can be set according to your preferences.

Self Timer: The self timer is useful when you want to include yourself in the picture when recording still images. The delay time for single shots can be set to 10 seconds or 2 seconds. You can also set the self timer to take 3 pictures after a 10 second delay. The second and third picture are taken in two second intervals after the first.

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -3 to +3 in 1/3-step increments.

Auto Bracket: In this mode, a maximum of 7 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the exposure. You can choose from the following:

  • Steps: 1/3 EV or 2/3 EV
  • Number of pictures: 3, 5, or 7
  • Sequences: [0 / - / +] or [- / 0 / +]

Burst Mode: Pictures are taken continuously while the shutter button is pressed. You can choose a High burst rate of 3 pictures per second or a Low burst rate of 2 pictures per second. When no RAW files are taken, you can shoot up to the capacity of the memory card. When RAW files are used, the camera can take between 4 and 7 total pictures.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance modes:

  • Auto: automatically adjusts the white balance
  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day

  • Incandescent: for recording under incandescent lighting
  • Flash: for taking a picture with flash only
  • White Set 1/White Set 2: for using a stored white balance setting taken manually
  • Preset: for using a preset white balance
  • Preset Color Temperature: for using a preset color temperature
  • Fine Adjustment: you can finely adjust the white balance toward Amber, Blue, Green, or Magenta
  • White Balance Bracketing: The bracket setting is based on the adjustment values for the WB Fine Adjustment. Three pictures with different colors are automatically recorded when the shutter button is pressed once.

ISO Sensitivity: ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values. If you set the ISO sensitivity higher, the camera becomes more suitable for recording in dark places. When setting to Auto, the ISO sensitivity is automatically adjusted from ISO100 to ISO3200 according to the brightness. In the intelligent ISO setting, the camera will automatically set the optimal ISO sensitivity and the shutter speed according to the movement of the subject and the surrounding brightness. In the Preset ISO mode, you can select 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, or 3200 with the ISO increments set to 1EV. When set to 1/3 EV, you can select 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 2000, 2500, or 3200.

Trimming Pictures: This function lets you trim unnecessary parts of the recorded picture. Motion pictures, pictures with audio, pictures with text stamps, and RAW images (include RAW + Standard and RAW + Fine) cannot be trimmed.

Power Save: The camera is automatically turned off if it has not been used for a predetermined amount of time. The amount of time can be set to 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is the standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Lens Hood: In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood will minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts off excess lighting and improves the picture quality.

This camera is the most comfortable and versatile digital camera I've used yet. Relatively small, very nicely designed, quick, and user friendly, it's been a pleasure to shoot with. I have only used the 14-45mm lens, which is a decent and practical starting point, and I can't wait to try the camera with other lenses, once more become available.

My previous camera was a Canon G10, which I quite liked, but I wanted the ability to change lenses and shoot in lower light. The sensor on the DMC-GF1 is significantly better (less noisy) at low light than the Canon's, and, of course, with a faster lens (like the 20mm f1.7 pancake lens) it should be closer to what I was used to when shooting 35mm film. I personally don't miss the eye-level viewfinder, but that may be an issue for some.

I'm not a pro and don't have need for a top-quality SLR, but this camera is literally perfect for my purposes-- travel, family, snaps, fun, occasional work-related documentation. The quality of the images is terrific.

Panasonic DMC-GF!

I think the Panasonic DMC-GF1 is an excellent camera for photographers who want features normally found in a digital SLR, without the size and weight. This camera has no shutter delay, interchangeable lenses, and excellent construction. For travel, this camera is very hard to beat, because the camera, extra lenses, and a flash together are light enough to carry around without killing your back and shoulder. I have a Con Eos 5D Mark II. With a few lenses and flash, we are talking about a very heavy bag.

The trade off is that there are only a handful of lenses compatible with the micro four thirds format. The camera does not include an optical viewfinder although one can be purchased as an accessory. The price is in line with other "system cameras" made by Canon or Nikon. To achieve the small size and weight, you give up the mirror, prism, and optical viewfinder. The sensor is half the size of a full frame digital like the Canon Eos 5D, Mark II. This is much larger than any point and shoot camera, and only a little smaller than most digital single lens reflexes.
