You're well into hour seven of today's college tour with your high school senior daughter. You've been running the camera all day, taking snapshots and movies and it's still going strong. With all the thoughtful automatic features on the Panasonic Lumix GX1, you'd think you'd be flirting with a drained battery, but this camera sips power at a civilized rate.
That's not all that makes this a perfect choice for a run-and-gun assignment. The touchscreen interface, in combination with the lightning-quick Contrast Detection autofocus, gives you the ability to lock in and compose a sudden photo opportunity in an instant. Heads up! Incoming football.
This GX1 comes with a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) zoom lens. It's a great choice for day-in, day-out snapshots while on the move. And while it's no slouch when it comes to serving up detailed, crisp images, remember this is a Micro Four Thirds-standard camera. That means compatibility with one of the deepest lineups of fine lenses in the world today.
If you're new to the world of interchangeable lens compact cameras, the GX1 has a welcome mat as comprehensive as a freshman orientation Intelligent Auto (iA) modes take care of the details like exposure, focus tracking, face recognition, and scene selection leaving you free to scan the scene for the next image. When you're trying to capture the feel of an institution in one frantic day, that's important.
Of course, most of those features can be controlled manually as well, through carefully thought-out controls and the touchscreen interface. And you have a wealth of creative options at your disposal: Scene modes to optimize the camera settings to your surroundings. Creative Control filters, like "Toy Effect" or "Retro." Photo Style options allow you to specify how your camera will handle colors and noise reduction.
For additional stability, control, and comfort, the GX1 can host an optional high-resolution electronic viewfinder, the DMW-LVF2, via a special electronic port on the back of the camera.
These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses, and advanced control and processing. You can explore these features for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, but their mirrorless design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.
