Just looking at this Panasonic lens, you might not suspect the truth. The fact is, you'd probably be comfortable using this lens on any Micro Four Thirds camera to the exclusion of all others. Somehow, and we're still not sure how, they've managed to make a lens with a "pancake" form factor be an image-stabilized, power-everything, premium-glass marvel. Before we go hyphen-crazy, let's just say we were duly impressed to see this elegant addition to Panasonic's new "X"-Series of premium lenses. This lens puts big pro-lens capabilities on the front of your small hybrid, while equipping it for genuine coat-pocket portability.

To keep it so small, Panasonic has put two ultra-quiet motors to work, powering the zoom and manual focus functions. There are no focus rings to manage. This is a zoom lens that lives in the sweet-spot range for photography — big wide vistas and vibrant, personal portraits come standard — yet it also gives you high-performance HD video. The powered zoom and focus levers are perfect for stable handheld work; quiet and responsive, they'll add variety and function to all your moving imagery.

Overview: The Panasonic H-PS14042 is a Lumix G Vario PZ 14-42 mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Power O.I.S. standard zoom lens for Panasonic Lumix G-series cameras. The 35mm equivalent focal length is 28-84mm. It has a Micro Four Thirds mount, and comes with a vinyl lens pouch. This lens has a black finish, and is also available in silver.

Power O.I.S.: The lens features Power O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), a system which makes it easy to shoot blur-free shots, even in low light situations, such as nighttime or indoors. Power O.I.S. has improved sensitivity of the gyro sensor, compared to Mega O.I.S., and can correct large, slow movement more effectively.

Power Zoom: The H-PS14042 is a compact standard zoom lens, only 1-1/4" long. When the camera is powered off, the lens is retracted. The lens has an electric-power zoom operation, controlled by a lever on the lens barrel. In addition, the manual zoom operation is controlled by a similar lever, instead of a zoom ring.

Light Speed AF: When used on compatible Panasonic Lumix G cameras, the lens supports the Light Speed AutoFocus, which is achieved in approximately 0.1 second (measured with the DMC-GF3). In addition, the aperture control is faster, making shutter time lag shorter by approximately 40%, compared with the H-FS014042 14-42mm Mega O.I.S. lens.

Not so hot

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had read reviews which said that this lens is soft at the long end. I have quite a few Panasonic Lumix lenses and have never gotten a bad one...until this lens. It is soft at the 42 (84mm) end. It seems that it is the luck of the draw with these as some units are sharp from end to end. Unfortunately, I got a bad one.

UPDATED 2/29: I am not all that nuts about the focusing method of the new lenses, but they are optimized for the video function and not still photos. After testing the lens I would be inclined to recommend it to a friend.

Pros: Size and weight. Makes a good travel lens.

Cons: So far I have none.
