Our take on the Panasonic SC-HT820V

by Melanie Seibert
Panasonic

A ton of playback options, right at your fingertips! Stock the SC-HT820V's 5-disc changer with your favorite DVD movies, music CDs, and even high-resolution DVD-Audio discs. Or use the built-in VCR to watch, and record to, videotapes. You can enjoy thrilling surround sound from all those sources with this one system — all you add is a TV!

The internal amp dishes out 600 watts to the speaker system, for intense movies and music. The 'HT820V also provides decoding for DVD soundtracks, and even creates 5.1-channel surround sound for TV broadcasts and other stereo sources. Get ready for a sharp, vivid DVD picture, too (progressive-scan video for HD-ready TVs!). You can even view JPEG digital photos (saved to CD) on your TV screen.

The voice-matched speaker package delivers intense, enveloping audio, and it perfectly matches the chic silver styling of many newer televisions. Meanwhile, the 220-watt subwoofer provides a solid sonic foundation for music and 5.1-channel movie soundtracks, turning out rich, smooth low frequencies.

General Features

SA-HT820V Main Unit: The SA-HT820V is the "control center" of the system and includes a 5-disc DVD/CD changer, VCR, Dolby Digital/DTS decoder and digital AM/FM tuner. The main unit connects to the subwoofer/amplifier via a system cable.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital
  • Dolby Pro Logic II (Movie, Music)
  • Dolby Pro Logic
  • DTS
  • Super Surround (Movie, Music, Party)
  • Sound Field Control
    • Heavy
    • Clear
    • Soft
    • Disco
    • Live
    • Hall

Center Focus: Using this feature, you can make the sound of the center channel seem like it's coming from the TV.

Custom Sound Memory: You can store the following sound settings for up to 30 discs so the unit recalls them the next time the disc is played: Subwoofer Level, Center Focus, Sound Field Control, and Super Surround.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the unit off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

DVD Features

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 54MHz/10-bit video digital-to-analog converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A Converter: This unit includes an audio digital-to-analog converter capable of providing 192kHz/24-bit and 96kHz/24-bit resolution. The 192kHz/24-bit and 96kHz/24-bit capabilities of this unit allow it to play DVD Video discs with 96kHz/24-bit audio tracks and DVD-Audio discs with sampling rates of 192kHz.

Progressive Scan Output: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with component video inputs that supports the progressive scanning mode. The component outputs on this unit can be set to pass either progressive or interlaced video.

Multi-Channel DVD-Audio Playback: DVD-Audio is a multi-channel format used for high resolution audio recording. This unit can decode and play DVD-Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192kHz with a 24-bit word length.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit will play MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level2 format. MP3 files with a compression rate from 32-320 kbps and WMA files with a compression rate from 48-320 kbps are supported. This unit can recognize a maximum of 999 tracks and 99 groups. Note: This unit is not compatible with ID3 tags.

JPEG Disc Playback: This unit will play JPEG files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level2 format. All JPEG files on a disc can be played back in a slide show. The slide show has an adjustable interval from 0-30 seconds. Additionally, you can rotate an image 90-degrees clockwise. This unit can recognize up to 4000 pictures and 400 groups. Picture resolution varies from 320 x 240 to 6144 x 4096.

HighMAT Disc Playback: HighMAT stands for High Performance Media Access Technology. Co-developed by Panasonic and Microsoft, HighMAT was designed to significantly improve interoperability for digital media content between PCs and popular electronics devices such as CD players, car stereos and DVD players. HighMAT is a digital-media standard that provides a dramatically improved method of storing, arranging and playing back personal digital photo, music and video collections on recordable discs such as CD-RW media. HighMAT discs are compatible with this unit.

Dialogue Enhancer: The Dialogue Enhancer increases the center channel volume (relative to other channels), making movie dialogue easier to hear and understand. Dialogue Enhancer is available when playing Dolby Digital, DTS, and MPEG soundtracks recorded in 3 or more channels with the dialogue recorded in the center channel.

Multi Re-master: This feature increases the data density in CD or DVD signals to reproduce even high-frequency sounds outside the audible range, creating incredible sound quality. It can also be used in conjunction with compressed formats like MP3 and WMA to compensate for signal loss, giving you a full, rich sound. There are three levels of this effect: Light (for high tempo music), Medium (for varying tempos), and Strong (for low tempo music), plus "off."

Picture Mode: You can choose one of the following picture mode settings:

  • Normal: normal picture
  • Cinema 1: mellows images and enhances detail in dark scenes
  • Cinema 2: sharpens images and enhances detail in dark scenes
  • Animation
  • Dynamic
  • User: allows you to adjust the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, gamma, and depth enhancer

Variable Zoom Function: Using this function, you can change the zoom ratio of the picture, so the picture fills the television screen. The zoom ratio changes from 1.00 to 1.60 in increments of 0.01 and from 1.60 to 2.00 in increments of 0.02. For faster zoom speed, press and hold the zoom button to increase the size by 0.05 units.

Quick Replay: Quick Replay allows you to jump back a few seconds during playback just in case you missed something, or want to see it again.

Position Memory: This function lets you eject a disc part way through a movie, and then resume watching from the same point later. This information can be stored for up to five discs.

CD Mode: The CD mode feature is very convenient if you want to play several music CDs sequentially. When activated, the player skips any DVD or JPEG discs, playing only CDs and MP3/WMA discs.

Karaoke: When playing a karaoke disc, the vocals can be turned off. Note: This unit does not have a microphone jack.

VCR Features

Recording Note: Internal dubbing from DVD to VHS is not possible.

Recording Speed: The VCR can record in SP, EP (3 times the length of SP mode), or VP (5 times the length of SP mode) mode. Note: Tapes recorded in the VP mode cannot be played on other equipment.

Super VHS Quasi Playback: This feature allows you to play S-VHS recordings using a standard VHS VCR. When S-VHS recordings are played, they are displayed with standard VHS resolution. Note: This unit does not record in the S-VHS mode.

Jet Navigator: This unit saves the date, channel, time, and category of the recordings you make and shows them on the Jet Navigator list, making it easier to find and play them. It can save the data for up to 14 recordings on a tape, for 20 different tapes, and for a total of 50 recordings. The following categories are available: Movie, Music, Drama, Education, Documentary, Sports, Children, News, and Others.

VHS Index Search System (VISS): Index Marks are inserted automatically at the start of every recording. You can use these marks to find a specific recording on the tape. Up to 20 index marks can be searched for in both directions.

Repeat: This feature allows you to automatically rewind and repeat the tape after it finishes playing. Note: In order for repeat play to work properly, there must be at least a 5-second blank at the end of the program.

Timer Recording: You can program the VCR's timer to record up to 16 broadcasts, as far as a month in advance. You can also record programs on a weekly or daily basis.

Auto SP-EP Change: When selected, the speed on timer recordings automatically switches from SP to EP mode if there is not enough time left on the tape.

Picture Mode: You can select one of the following picture modes:

  • Standard: for standard television programs
  • Dynamic: provides clear, vivid pictures for scenery and sports
  • Soft: for prerecorded tapes

Speakers

SB-WA820 Active Subwoofer: The SC-HT820V features an active subwoofer with built-in amplification for all of the speakers. The subwoofer uses a 4-ohm, 6-3/4" cone woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure. The woofer is covered by a non-removable light gray plastic grille. The subwoofer inputs include a jack for the AC power cord and the proprietary system cable. The subwoofer also has spring clip outputs for the front, center and surround speakers.

Front and Surround Speakers: The front and surround (SB-FS520A) speakers each have a 6-ohm, 2-1/2" full-range woofer in a bass-reflex enclosure. Each enclosure is covered by a non-removable silver metal grille. The integrated stands allow the speakers to be placed on any flat surface. The speakers can also be mounted on the wall. Each speaker has keyhole slots (hardware not supplied) and two M5 threaded inserts, allowing the speakers to be used with optional brackets.

Center Channel Speaker: The center channel speaker (SB-PC820) has two 6-ohm, 2-1/2" full range woofers in a bass-reflex enclosure. The enclosure is covered by a non-removable silver metal grille. The integrated stand allows the center speaker to be placed on any flat surface. There are two M5 threaded inserts on the back of the speaker for use with optional brackets. In addition, there are 2 keyhole slots provided for wall mounting.

Video-shielding: All of the speakers, including the subwoofer, are video-shielded, allowing them to be placed near your television without causing picture distortion.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The SC-HT820V comes with the EUR7722X20 wireless remote control, which is pre-programmed to operate this system and a number of functions on other brands of TVs.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

RF Output: The RF output only carries broadcast signals (cable TV and over-the-air broadcasts). The DVD and VCR video signals are not passed through the RF output.

VCR/DVD Outputs: This unit's Video Out jack (composite video) will output signals from the DVD player and the VCR. The S-Video and Component Video jacks are for DVD output only. If the S-Video or Component Video jack is used, the composite video jack should also be connected in order to watch video from both sources.

Line Out: The main unit has left and right RCA outputs. These outputs have a fixed level, so they are not designed for use with external amps or powered speakers that do not have volume control. These outputs are designed to feed a signal to a cassette recorder.

Headphone Jack: The main unit features a 3.5mm (1/8") mini-jack headphone output for private listening. When headphones are used, the speakers are muted.
