Your vacation bags are packed. Your plane tickets are ready. What are you forgetting? Oh yeah: Panasonic's HDC-TM80 camcorder. With this compact cam by your side, you're sure to capture stunning videos and photos of the beach with its turquoise sea and sparkling sand. You can record your video to the cam's 16GB built-in memory, which can hold up to 6 hours of video, or pop in an optional SD memory card.

"Full" high-definition recording for smoother video
Unlike some other HD camcorders, the 'TM80 records video in "full" HD 1080 progressive resolution. It means the video you record with this cam will look smooth and have lots of details with no traces of flicker or jagged edges. It also means your videos of that zip line over the rainforest will look simply gorgeous on your HDTV when you get home. Just add an optional HDMI cable and you'll be all set.

Beautiful zoomed-in shots of distant subjects
The 'TM80 also features an intelligent zoom that'll get you up to 42X closer to the tropical birds and lizards. It does this using the cam's 34X optical zoom, plus a little bit of digital zoom to get you closer without blurry edges. Plus, the 'TM80 uses a hybrid optical image stabilization that corrects for a wider range of hand-shake using both optical and digital stabilization. It makes it possible to record more professional-looking close-ups that won't induce nausea when you show your video off to friends and family at home.

Easy shooting in any situation
This cam's powerful Intelligent Auto sensor accurately assesses your shooting conditions and automatically chooses the settings that'll help you get the best video possible. You won't have to bother with the focus or contrast — the cam will do it for you. It'll even automatically detect any faces in your scene, and follow them wherever they move throughout your frame. It makes capturing video of your child playing on the beach or your spouse learning how to samba that much easier.

From birthday parties to YouTube™ antics, camcorders let you capture moments you can share with friends and family, or the world at large. Most newer camcorders save your videos to built-in digital memory or a removable memory card. Some models come with a built-in hard disk drive that gives you much more storage. For maximum portability, check out our smaller cams that fit into a pocket or purse. For high-def videos that look awesome on your HDTV, go for a slightly larger model with a better lens and image sensor.

    General Features

Recording Media: The Panasonic HDR-TM80 allows you to record video and still images on the 16 GB built-in memory, or on optional SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. The unit is compatible with SD Memory cards from 512MB to 2GB, SDHC Memory cards from 4GB to 32GB, and SDXC Memory cards from 48GB to 64GB. SD cards with a Speed Class Rating of 4 or higher are recommended.

2.7" LCD Touch Screen: The 2.7" (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The 230,000-dot LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp and detailed images for monitoring or playback. Mirror mode allows you to view a mirror-image of the subject you are shooting in the LCD screen when the screen is rotated 180 degrees, but the image will be normal when recorded. In addition, the touch screen LCD allows you to navigate through the menu system. There is no separate viewfinder on this camcorder.

Recording Formats: This camera captures video in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (AVCHD compliant) format with Dolby Digital 2-channel audio. iFrame recording uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 (.MP4) format with AAC audio compression. (iFrame is a format suitable for Mac (iMovie'11).) Still images are recorded in JPEG compression.

Image Sensor: The TM80 has a 1/5.8" MOS image sensor with 1,500,000 pixels. The camera features 1,300,000 to 1,120,000 effective pixels for recording 16:9 high definition video and 16:9 still images. It has 1,100,000 pixels for 3:2 aspect ratio still images, and 970,000 pixels for 4:3 still images.

Lens: This camera features an F1.5-F4.0 lens with a 34x optical zoom and Auto Iris. The lens' 35mm film camera equivalent is as follows:

    • Motion Pictures: 33.7-1240 mm (16:9)
    • Still Images: 41.3-1405 mm (4:3), 38.1-1298 mm (3:2), 33.7-1240 mm (16:9)

Intelligent Zoom: The camcorder has an Intelligent Zoom function that goes up to 42x while maintaining high definition picture quality. Intelligent Resolution technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving image sharpness.

Digital Zoom: In addition to the 34x optical zoom, the camcorder has a selectable 90x or 2000x (total) digital zoom. Because the picture is processed digitally, the picture quality deteriorates the more you zoom in. The power zoom lever can be moved slightly for a slow zoom, or moved further for a faster zoom.

Crystal Engine PRO: The TM80 features Crystal Engine PRO processing to turn the huge amount of data into full HD images. It produces smooth, high-resolution zoom shots even beyond the optical zooming range.

Intelligent Auto Mode: The Intelligent Auto (iA) mode automatically sets the shooting mode that is appropriate for the condition when you simply point the unit to what you want to record. Intelligent Auto Modes include:

    • Portrait: Faces are detected and focused automatically, and brightness is adjusted to make people stand out against the background
    • Scenery: the whole landscape will be recorded vividly without whiting out the background sky, which may be very bright
    • Spotlight: improved quality when subject is brightly illuminated (motion picture recording only)
    • Low Light: for dark scenes, such as at dusk (motion picture recording only)
    • Night Portrait: subject and background are recorded with near real-life brightness (still picture recording only)
    • Night Scenery: record night scenery vividly by slowing the shutter speed (still picture recording only)
    • Macro: recording at very close proximity to the object of recording (still picture recording only)
    • Normal: contrast adjusted automatically for clear images

Hybrid O.I.S.: Panasonic's Hybrid O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot movies and still images. Hybrid O.I.S. is a combination of optical and electronic image stabilization systems. The Hybrid O.I.S. feature can be turned on or off for motion picture recording. You can select from two levels of stabilization (or off) for still picture recording.

Face Framing: When Face Framing is activated, the camcorder will recognize up to 15 human faces, and a "frame" appears around each face in the LCD screen. The camcorder sets the focus and brightness on the faces in the scene. Larger faces and faces nearer to the center of the screen take preference over the others. You can register the faces of particular persons, giving them priority focusing and displaying their names when they are recognized by the camcorder.

AF/AE Tracking: The TM80 allows you to set the focus and exposure to the subject by touching the subject on the touch screen. The focus and exposure will keep following the subject automatically, even if it moves (Dynamic Tracking).

Illumination Requirements: The camera records video and photos in normal mode at a standard illumination of 1400 lx. You can record at 7 lx in the Low Light mode and approximately 1 lx in the Color Night Record mode.

White Balance Adjustment: You can set the color balance to the brightness of the recording environment using the following methods:

    • Auto: The white balance is adjusted automatically
    • Sunny Mode: for recording outdoors under a clear sky
    • Cloudy Mode: for recording outdoors under a cloudy sky
    • Indoor Mode 1: for recording indoors under incandescent lights and halogen lamps
    • Indoor Mode 2: for recording indoors under color fluorescent lamps or sodium lamps
    • Manual: You can manually set the white balance using a white card or paper.

Manual Exposure: When automatic exposure settings fail to give you the images you desire, you can manually set the shutter speed and the iris/gain values. When recording movies, the Shutter Speed can be set between 1/60 and 1/8000 (1/30-1/8000 in Auto Slow Shutter mode). For still images, the shutter speed is set between 1/2 and 1/2000. The Iris/Gain value can be set between F16 and F2.0 (0 dB to 18 dB).

Focus Modes: The TM80 focuses automatically for most situations. When auto focus doesn't work, you can switch to Manual Focus and use the touchscreen to manually focus on the subject.

Audio Recording: The camcorder is equipped with a built-in stereo microphone. In the setup menu, you can activate a Wind Noise Canceller to cut down on the amount of noise caused by wind blowing on the built-in mic. The Zoom Mic feature lets you synchronize the directivity of the microphone with the zoom operation.

Built-in Video/Photo Light: An LED on the front of the camcorder can help illuminate dark places when recording. The Video Light function can be set to On or Automatic while recording video. The Photo Light function can be set to flash the LED automatically or always flash when taking a picture in a dark place. The intensity of the Photo Light can be adjusted as well.

    Video Camera Features

HD Video Recording: The TM80 records high definition motion images at a 1920 x 1080 resolution onto the built-in 16 GB memory or an inserted SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. The camera records audio in Dolby Digital 2-channel audio using the built-in microphone. If the video is going to be uploaded to a Mac, it is recommended that it be recorded in the iFrame format with AAC audio.

Recording Capacity: The built-in memory and SD/SDHC/SDXC cards have the following capacity at each recording mode:

    Memory Size/Type 1920 x 1080 960 x 540

Quick Start: The camera will go into standby mode if you close the LCD monitor while the unit is powered on. When the LCD monitor is reopened, the unit resumes recording mode/pause in approximately 0.6 seconds, allowing you to start recording almost immediately.

Pre-Rec: The Pre-Rec mode allows recording of pictures and sound to start approximately 3 seconds before the start/stop button is pressed. This helps prevent you from missing a shot.

Fader: When you start recording, the image and audio will gradually appear, and when you pause or stop recording, the image/audio gradually disappear. You can select a black or white fader, or turn off the fade mode altogether.

Relay Recording: When relay recording is activated, the camcorder will automatically begin recording video to an inserted SD card when the built-in memory is full. When finished recording, the relay-recorded scenes can be combined into one scene on the SD card.

Playback Modes: During playback, you can choose the following operations: Play/pause, rewind, fast forward, stop, skip forward, skip backward, slow-motion, and frame-by-frame. Audio will only be heard during normal playback.
