What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Simply amazing what 1 10 inch sub can do. This was installed in a Scion FR-S in a JL Prowedge box. The box was made specifically for the sub by JL and I love the space saving it provides. There isn't much space to begin with and was a little skeptical at first due to how small the box was and the quality of the bass. Needless to say, the worries are gone and now I need to find out where certain rattles are coming from due to how strong the sub hits. Being powered by an Alpine MRX-M55 and birth sheet was rated at 619 watt RMS. They pair great together. It's not an SPL sub, but it puts out pretty well. SQ is amazing! Luckily I got a great deal on this, but its worth the price retail.

Pros: Great sound quality

Cons: Louder than I expected, but that's not really a con.

i have three of these in a heavy duty sealed box in my camry powered by a rockford fosgate 1000/1. they hit real hard. but i think just two of these will hit just as hard if not harder than three because i am only limited to wiring the three to 2.6 ohm. i was running 1 ohm when i was only running two. anyways, three of these look cooler than two. got the jl mesh grills for all three subs. i love jl audio!

Pros: everything

Cons: none

I recently installed this in my 2004 Toyota Tacoma extra cab. I have it in a large (1.25cu ft.)ported box with 300 watts rms running to it and let me tell you, it is WAY louder than I expected. The sub hits so hard I think I can feel my brain bleeding. Since I'm going for more of an SQ setup, this was not what I wanted.

I'm in the process of building my own sealed enclosure based on JLs recommend box specs. Hopefully this new setup won't require me to undergo brain surgery.

BIG bang for the buck.

I have 1 10w6 hooked up to an Alpine MRP-M500 and it sounds great. I have a 2 dr car and the sub and amp is more than enough. My box is a little bigger than JL recommended but it sounds excellent. My one 10 sounds better than other guys I know with 2 less expensive 12's.

insane quality

I installed 1-10w6 in 06 chevy crew cab behind seat by removing metal backing on seat, ported box 1.5 vb, 12 sqin. 12 in long, ported box tuned @ 38hz. this will give u 3 to 5.5 db gain between 35 hz and 55hz. jls box is alittle small to get any gain this works well trust me. I have tried several different set ups and this one is da boom hands down. It is the cleanest sounding bass with a sonic hit that doesn't quit. thanks cruthfield for your excellent service and patience, i know several of those speakers in the outlet dept. are my returns, thanks again.

Super 10

This sub is excellent for those of us that cannot afford the W7 series. While still exspensive, they arent as much as W7's. I have 1 10W6 pushed by an Alpine MRP-M500 in a ported box and I get out of my car with ears ringing. I've heard 10, 12, and 13 W7's, and yes they are better, but the price turns me off. My opinion, these are the best sounding subs JL has that are fairly priced. You will not be disappointed.

W7's Not so little brother..2good2btru, JL10W6

This is an amazing very fast, articulate sub. I had a pair of these installed into my KIA Optima with 1 cubic foot slot loaded box each, and 1200Watts
of juice on tap, and lets just say, ONE would have been plenty for all but the most extreme loud applications. My listening habits are all across the board from R&B, RAP, Chistian alternatave Rock, Modern Jazz, as well as Techno. Is this sub cheap? No, but for what you get it is. Buyer beware though, because you will not know how loud you are listening until you get out of the car. Case in point, I cranked up a song I was listening to in a mall parking lot, and the next thing I knew another car full of people were rockin out to the song playing on MY stereo! They were well over 50' away! If you set them up right, With a high current amp, you will have one of the fastest revealing subs $$ can buy any price. Beware, depending on music choice, you WILL draw attention to yourself, unless you decide to only go with 1, as well as having much less demanding listening tastes. Definately would choose this woofer over many other, there are larger and louder, but I have heard none more musical than this one.

very nice subs.....

these r some great subs that u wont regret buyin.....its worth it for the price.i had my 2 10's hooked up in a jlo. box and a jl 1000/1 amp,it sounds really good...very, deep , hard hitting bass....well i had to take a while to adjust my amp but its worth ur time itll sound waay better...btw my amp is only lik 1/3 turn cap, and a stock head unit...plan to add an alpine or eclipse deck later on...i know that itll sound 10x better then how it is now...

Absolutely Amazing

Written By Colt, Jonesboro, Arkansas on Thursday, February 14, 2008

I have two of these in my 4th gen. camaro firing into the hatch in a sealed box that I built. It's tuned tuned to approximately 40 hertz. Pushing it I have a JL 1000/1 and let me say that its by far the loudest set of 10's that myself or any of my friends have ever heard. My two 10's can put many brands and models of 12's and even some 15's. Theses subs respond amazingly fast and sound cleaner than anything else I've ever had. While it may seem hard to justify the price of JL, once you break down and buy it, it's rare that you'll regret it.

Very well rounded sub. I have had 10 inch subs and a 15 inch L7, this sub is the best of both worlds. The frequency response is just plain amazing. It hits the low notes just like a bigger sub and fits about anywhere! Have a jl 500 slash amp running it also

Enclosure Compatibility

W-Cone: The JL Audio W6v2 subwoofer utilizes a W-Cone design, a unit-body cone assembly, that delivers astonishing cone stiffness with minimal mass. The shape also provides incredible torsional rigidity, which is critical to maintaining voice coil alignment at the suspension limits. In order to gain maximum stiffness, two lightweight mineral-filled polypropylene skins are bonded together at the perimeter and the center of the assembly. The lower skin's cross-section is shaped like a "W", and provides incredible rigidity when bonded to the dished upper skin.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W6v2 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Engineered Lead-Wire System: The co-extruded lead wires work in conjunction with critically-engineered entry and exit support structures to achieve flawless high-excursion operation. The flying lead design does not compromise spider linearity or radial stability the way "woven in" lead wire designs do.

Progressive-Roll Spider: The large, progressive-roll spider provides precise control and motor/voice coil alignment without limiting excursion prematurely.

Ventilation: The woofer's large, diffused pole-vent works in conjunction with specifically engineered molded "NeckVents" in the lower cone body to remove hot air from the voice coil gap. This pole vent is located around the JL Audio badge at the rear of the speaker. The elevated frame design of the W6v2 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Note: A minimum distance of 3/4" is required between the back of the speaker and any wall of the enclosure to allow proper operation of the pole vent.

Terminal Jumper System: The W6v2 features dual voice coils with a single set of spring-loaded push terminals and the Terminal Jumper System. The Terminal Jumper System consists of four voice coil configuration tab terminals, located behind the push terminals, that are used to interconnect the dual voice coils in one of two ways--series or parallel. The system comes from the factory with two jumpers configured in a parallel fashion, resulting in a 2-ohm load presented at the speaker terminals. To switch to a series connection, you should use one jumper connected from "VC1-" to "VC2+". The series connection presents an 8-ohm load to the speaker terminals.

Note: Both voice coils must be connected to the amplifier in order for the speaker to perform properly.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 0.625 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 14.5" W x 12" H x 10.25" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Recommended Ported Box Volume: The ported box size recommended by JL Audio is 0.75 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 22" W x 12" H x 10.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width=1.25"
  • Slot Height=10.5"
  • Slot Length=30" (a right angled port with a 17.25" extension)
