JL Audio

Our take on the JL Audio 10W1v2-4

The affordable W1v2 subwoofer incorporates patented features developed by JL Audio for their legendary W7 subs. Special venting keeps the W1v2 sub running cool for trouble-free performance, while extensive research in cone bonding and motor assembly construction keeps its cone movement linear for precise, dependable output. The cone interlocks with the dust cap for superior rigidity, and a sophisticated suspension system keeps internal parts aligned properly.

The low-profile 10W1v2-4 10" subwoofer works best in compact enclosures, so you can put quality lows in smaller and hard-to-fit vehicles. It features a metallic-finish polypropylene cone with an embossed JL Audio logo for a look that stands out as much as the sound. The removable, customizable trim ring lets you put a personal touch on your system, and makes optional grille installation a snap. This punchy W1v2 sub works well with moderate power, delivering impressive performance without costing a fortune.

Features

Woofer: JL Audio W1v2 subwoofer features an injection-molded, metallic-finish polypropylene cone woofer with an embossed metallic JL Audio logo with a butyl rubber surround for added durability, woofer excursion and bass response.

Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radius feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at  maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior

Interlocking Cone & Dust Cap: The W1v2's utilize a dust cap that is not just glued, but also interlocks with features molded into the cone body for a tight snap-fit. This creates a more rigid cone assembly and a more reliable dust cap attachment.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W1v2 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Vented Reinforcement Collar: The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC) is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability.

  • Stress Relief: By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weakness. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes
  • Air Flow: The VRC also features slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings. This reduces thermal compression effects and enhances reliability

Insert Molded Suspension/Coil/Terminal Sub-Assembly: The W1v2 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. This type of assembly ensures precise lead wire length, lead wire entry and exit angles; and coil to spider perpendicularity.

Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the W1v2 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 0.625 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 16.5" W x 13.5" H x 7.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Recommended Ported Box Volume: The ported box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.00 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 18" W x 13.25" H x 13.5" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width =1.0"
  • Slot Height = 11.75"
  • Slot Length = 29.0" (a right angled port with a 13.75" extension)

JL knows bass

Written By Eric, Richmond, VA on Monday, May 18, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I was looking to upgrade the sound system in my 2008 Ford Explorer. I like good clean bass that is loud inside of my vehicle, but not outside of it. I bought 1 of these and powered it with an Apline MRP-M500 amp 300x1. When I first heard it, I wasn't very impressed. The bass was quiet and didnt hit very hard at all. After about 3 days of breaking in, it was like an entirely different sub. The bass was incredible! From rap to rock, it was exactly what I was looking for. So be sure not to get discouraged after install. Once it breaks in, you'll realize you made the right choice.

kick arse subwoofer set-up

Written By JohnG, Friendswood, Tx on Sunday, December 28, 2008

I wanted a good clear bass setup for my 08 Crew Cab Silverado and I found it. I listened to many friends sub setups, most were too boomy or muddy (or way too much thump). A friend has a setup I like (200w-rms/4ohm) with a single JL 10W1V2.4, THAT SYSTEM is just what I wanted. I installed a 250w-rms (JL Audio)amp with one of these in a down firing
box, she rocks!! After 2 days of break-in, it sounds awesome. Had to turn down the bass a little, it just rocks. From country to rock, this thing is great. It is not the window shaking bass, just clean, quick, pure bass. I thought about going with 2 of these, would be too much bass for me. For a big room home theatre system, nah (for this I want 1000+ RMS &12's). For a truck cab, she's just right (for my taste). And again, I have the bass cut way back. Now I have bass for me, not bass that offends those outside my vehicle... Installed 4 Kappa 60.9CS- 6.5", JL amp w/300rms watts also to round it out. A great set-up for my truck

Great Subwoofers for Price and Size

Written By Crutchfield, Slidell, LA on Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I was really limited as to what size subwoofers I could fit under my back seat in
my 2008 Nissan Frontier CC which is one of the reasons why I choose these
subwoofers. I am very happy with my choice because they are very clean
sounding and what else can I say JL makes an awesome affordable, clean
subwoofer. I have two of these subs hooked up to a JL G1700 amp giving a total
of 700 watts output perfect for these two sub hooked up in parallel. I am very
happy with my purchase and I don't think that any other one for this price would
sound nearly as good as the JL's that I purchased.

JL Audio 10W1v2-4

Written By Chris, West Chester, OH on Thursday, October 08, 2009

I absolutely love this sub. I just installed it today and WOW! The bass is very tight and accurate without going overboard. If you put some power to it, you will be very, very excited.

I'm running a Clarion CZ209, Orion 300W amp, and this sub with a Crutchfield box. At half power it does wonders...

Heart pounding subs

Written By Taylor, North Pole, Alaska on Thursday, September 24, 2009

JL is top of the line, if you want sound quality, JL Audio is the way to go. From the basic W1's to the breath taking W7, JL is good in sound quality as well as clean, crisp bass.

I go to North Pole High in Alaska, People hear me comming from a block away because of JL Audio Subs!... I had limited space to put a componet subwoofer in my truck because of the back seat. I ended up buying two 10W1v2-4 Ohm speakers, hooking it up to the Rockford Fosgate P-400-4 bridged with a .626 Cubic feet wedge box, and a 1.2 Farad Capasitor.

I have them running 100 Hrtz and below so it hits the low frequency bass. I would definately reccomend these subs to anyone who is going for great sount quality as well as heart pounding bass.

J.L. Audio Rocks

Written By jdm76, Texas on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

I have a set of these that are close to 10 years old. Of course there has been some changes since mine was made but with J.L. Audio you could only assume they were for the better. I've had mine in a ported truck box with a MTX 280 bridged running them since they were new and they have never missed a beat. Great Speakers with a lot of punch from Country to Hip Hop they would do what I asked them.

JL Audio 10W1v2-4

Written By Williams, Louisiana on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

This is one of the best subs I have ever owned. Its not made for competition bass, but it is made for those who just want good quality bass. I drive a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica and have the stock Ifinity door speakers and CD player. I have one 10W1v2-4 in a ported truck box with a Bazooka 300 watt rms, mono block class D amp and my friends think I have two 12s. Everyone is like, "that's one 10"? I love it. All in all, I got everything I payed for and a little more.
