About the JL Audio 10W6v3-D4

John Pollard

Bass that means business

JL Audio's celebrated W6v3 subwoofers deliver knockout low end with incredible accuracy. The 10W6v3-D4 10" subwoofer uses a tough, mineral-filled polypropylene cone that offers incredible strength without the extra bulk that can slow woofer response. JL Audio conducted extensive research to develop a motor structure that operates efficiently and precisely, so this sub can deliver powerful, reliable bass while handling up to 600 watts RMS. Exclusive cone-bonding assemblies, advanced cooling systems, and a highly stable spider attachment enhance reliability and promote long performance life.

Precision-crafted low end

The sub's solid cast-alloy basket allows your W6v3 sub to handle big-time power without any distortion-causing flexing. A sophisticated suspension system promotes linear cone movement for greater accuracy. The simple terminal jumper wiring system allows you to set the subwoofer's impedance to draw maximum power from your amplifier, or to design a multi-sub setup.

Get the sound and look you want

The elegant JL Audio medallion on the front shows the competition you mean business. Go for a special look with the removable black trim ring, which can be painted to match your installation theme. The 10W6v3-D4 works best in a compact enclosure, so you can get great bass in some tight places.

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: Due to the 10W6v3-D4's dual 4 ohm voice coils, the subwoofer can be configured as a 2-ohm (voice coils wired in parallel) or 8-ohm (voice coils wired in series) driver. The included jumper wires allow easy adjustment from one configuration to the other (the factory jumper position is 2-ohm).

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 10W6v3-D4 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Pole-Vent Airflow Control (PVAC): The bullet-shaped structure inside the pole-vent directs airflow and increases air velocity to effectively reduce voice coil temperature, leading to improved fidelity and reliability.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the 10W6v3-D4 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer has a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase an optional mesh grille insert specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring (item number 136SGR106, sold separately).

Engineered Lead Wire System: JL Audio's engineered flying lead-wires have carefully engineered entry and exit support structures molded into the terminals and the voice coil collar and are jacketed to further reduce the likelihood of shorting and fatigue. The result is predictable high-excursion lead-wire behavior with long term reliability, and none of the compromises inherent to a woven-in lead wire system (when attached or woven into the spider material, lead-wires can alter the spider's motion, leading to asymmetrical spider behavior).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Enclosure: JL Audio recommends a sealed box size of 0.628 ft³ (0.55 ft³ net, plus the sub's 0.078 ft³ displacement). A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 12-1/2" W x 12-1/2" H x 10-1/2" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Ported Enclosure: The ported box size JL Audio recommends is 0.828 ft³ (0.75 ft³ net, plus the sub's 0.078 ft³ displacement). The recommended slot port is 10-7/8" x 1-3/8" x 27-5/8", resulting in a tuning frequency of 39 Hz and a -3dB point of 33 Hz.

Q
I built a box with 3 chambers for 3 10" subs. Box is sealed and each chamber is .94 cubic inches with a mounting depth of 8". Will the JL W6 10" be a good pick for this box?
johnny  Jan 07, 2023

A
Greetings jbthree, and thank you for your question. The JL Audio W6 10 inch is just a bit under 7 inches deep, so that would fit nicely, but your box's chambers are .94 cubic feet, and the W6 for best subwoofer performance is looking for .550 net sealed according to their manual. Not a perfect match, but the W6 would still work fantastic.

This sub is amazing. I also use a 5 channel (+ DSP) with 500 watts dedicated to the sub. I see the focal can go up to 700watts so as long as your being smart/responsible not pushing it to distortion it will be a great match to your amplifier.

I have the focal K2's in all four doors of my Chevy Silverado and two a of the 10" JL W6's, I'm very pleased. I can have as much bass as I want!!!

Q
Can one of these handle 1000 watts?
tonio  Jun 16, 2021
1 answer
A
One of these is rated for 600 watts RMS, and can be wired to a 2-ohm or 8-ohm load. I would not put 1000 watts to this subwoofer, it will damage it.

Q
Can one of these handle 1000 watts?
tonio  Jun 16, 2021
1 answer
A
This subwoofer should only get up to 600 watts RMS from an amp. Any more will overdrive it and void its warranty. We have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 who can help give a personal recommendation on a matched setup.

Wiring 3 jl 10w6v3 to a fosgate power series 1000.1 amp?
delirious  Mar 29, 2021

A
In the manual that comes with it they show the various wiring options. But basically if you wire it in parallel you can do 2ohms with 3 subs. I've used a 500.1 Fosgate Punch on these, worked pretty good, but upgraded to a 1000.1 and that was even better. :)

DVC 2 ohm can be wired to 1.34 or 3 ohm and DVC 4 can be wired to 2.67 or 6

What is a good option for an amp? I'm not wanting to spend much money on it but I'd like to be able to use it to it's full power.

I currently have two of the JL W6's with a JL RD1500 amp. The amp is more than two subs can handle, but I simply don't turn the gain more than half way. I highly recommend not going cheap on a amp. I've tried several other amps to try and save a few dollars but ended up costing me a lot more in the long run.

I would go with the new JD 1000 from JL. It's there newest flagship amp with all the new tech at a good price. But to be honest this is such a great sub that I wouldn't cut any corners on a low end amp. Give it the juice and amp quality it deserves and you will be more then happy. Base is strong but super solid and accurate. Thumps are nice and hard precise. Personally for the money difference I don't think there is that big of a gap between this W6 and there w7 subs. But anyway JD 1000, or RD500 XD600 would be awesome as well! I am currently pushing 2 W6 10"s by a XD1000. Would of gone ALL vxi amps but all ready have 2 and saved some money by going XD 1000 for sub. Anyway hope it helps!

Q
Hi I have a JL XD1000/1v2 amp and I im currently running 2 10w3v3v4 subwoofers. Will i be able to run 2 10w6s with this amp?
michael23  Jan 16, 2020

A
Those W6 subs are looking for 600 watts RMS a piece so ideally you would have an amp pushing 1200 watts. However the XD1000/1V2 would definitely have enough power to get really nice sound out of them. If you want to push them to their full potential you might consider something like the RD1500/1 https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rFBKc290/p_13698643/JL-Audio-RD1500-1.html?tp=35834

Yes most definitely! I am running the very same set up now! 2 w6" 10s a XD 1000. 2 JL vxi amps with audiofrog GB speakers all ran active. I wish I had more power to w6 to hear full potential. But it's way more than enough bass. It's a real deep hard Impacting sub. And very accurate. If you all ready have the XD 1000 then run it. But if u want a new or want to make theses baby's really pound ALL out. I would say slash or HD mono. But otherwise more bass then I could ask for with 1000XD and very happy

No these subs are designed for about 600 watts and I recommend the xd600/1v2 to push it at 2ohms.

Can't do it with one.... but can with two
christopher  Feb 13, 2016
A
No, these are dual 4ohm coils. You can get it down to a 2ohm load. You could wire 2 of these subs to get 1ohm. You have to have a serious amp to handle a 1ohm load.
marc  Feb 13, 2016
A
Hi Larry, This sub can only be wired in 2 or 8 ohm configurations. The only way to get it down to 1 ohm would be to get two of them and wire them in parallel. I hope this helps. Mike A. Katy, TX
