Our take on the JL Audio 12W6v2-D4

by Dominic Devito
JL Audio

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Bass that means business

W6v2 W-Cone JL Audio W6v2 subwoofers deliver knockout low end with audiophile-quality sound. The patented polypropylene W-Cone™ design promotes strength without adding bulk which can slow woofer response. JL Audio conducted extensive research to ensure that the W6v2 sub's motor structure operates efficiently and precisely, delivering powerful, reliable bass. Exclusive cone-bonding assemblies, advanced cooling systems, and a highly stable spider attachment enhance reliability and promote long performance life.

Precision-crafted low end

W6v2 terminal The sub's solid cast-alloy basket allows your W6v2 sub to handle big-time power without any distortion-causing flexing. A sophisticated suspension system promotes linear cone movement for greater accuracy. The simple terminal jumper wiring system allows you to set the subwoofer's impedance to draw maximum power from your amplifier, or to design a multi-sub setup.

Get the sound and look you want

The 12W6v2-D4 subwoofer sports a 12" cone, polyester foam surround, and dual 4-ohm voice coils. The elegant JL Audio medallion on the front shows the competition you mean business. Go for a special look with the removable black trim ring, which can be painted to match your installation theme. The 12W6v2-D4 works best in a compact enclosure, so you can get great bass in some tight places.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

W-Cone: The JL Audio W6v2 subwoofer utilizes a W-Cone design, a unit-body cone assembly, that delivers astonishing cone stiffness with minimal mass. The shape also provides incredible torsional rigidity, which is critical to maintaining voice coil alignment at the suspension limits. In order to gain maximum stiffness, two lightweight mineral-filled polypropylene skins are bonded together at the perimeter and the center of the assembly. The lower skin's cross-section is shaped like a "W", and provides incredible rigidity when bonded to the dished upper skin.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W6v2 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Engineered Lead-Wire System: The co-extruded lead wires work in conjunction with critically-engineered entry and exit support structures to achieve flawless high-excursion operation. The flying lead design does not compromise spider linearity or radial stability the way "woven in" lead wire designs do.

Progressive-Roll Spider: The large, progressive-roll spider provides precise control and motor/voice coil alignment without limiting excursion prematurely.

Ventilation: The woofer's large, diffused pole-vent works in conjunction with specifically engineered molded "NeckVents" in the lower cone body to remove hot air from the voice coil gap. This pole vent is located around the JL Audio badge at the rear of the speaker. The elevated frame design of the W6v2 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Note: A minimum distance of 3/4" is required between the back of the speaker and any wall of the enclosure to allow proper operation of the pole vent.

Terminal Jumper System: The W6v2 features dual voice coils with a single set of spring-loaded push terminals and the Terminal Jumper System. The Terminal Jumper System consists of four voice coil configuration tab terminals, located behind the push terminals, that are used to interconnect the dual voice coils in one of two ways--series or parallel. The system comes from the factory with two jumpers configured in a parallel fashion, resulting in a 2-ohm load presented at the speaker terminals. To switch to a series connection, you should use one jumper connected from "VC1-" to "VC2+". The series connection presents an 8-ohm load to the speaker terminals.

Note: Both voice coils must be connected to the amplifier in order for the speaker to perform properly.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Removable Magnet Boot: The woofer magnet has a removable protective rubber boot. The magnet diameter listed in Features & Specifications (6.692") was measured with the rubber boot removed. With the boot installed, the magnet diameter becomes 7.066".

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.25 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 18" W x 14" H x 12.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Recommended Ported Box Volume: The ported box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.5 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 26.25" W x 14" H x 13" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width=1.75"
  • Slot Height=12.5"
  • Slot Length=29" (a right angled port with a 16" extension)

Amazing

Written By Ramiro, Los Angeles, Ca on Monday, January 14, 2013

So right off the bat, JL is amazing. I had a Toyota Yaris sedan with 2 12" Sony xplods along with Sony cabinet speakers that I bought for a temporary thing. My friends have Kicker L7's, Rockford Fosgates, and Memphis subs and I was thinking about upgrading to something along that line. Until a friend of mine swore that the W6 would blow my mind and he managed to convince me to go JL Audio. I upgraded to a single 12" W6 in a 3 foot ported box along w/ 6.5 C5s and some other 6x9 JL speakers all powered by two of the new Slash V3 amps... and wow! This was my favorite setup. Ive had pioneer and some L7s in a truck before but this sub just blew them out of the water. I kept this setup for about 5 months than upgraded my car to an 08 Mini Cooper. I was kind of worried that it wouldn't fit but luckily I found out that a box for an Expedition would be able to fit my Cooper allowing me to keep my W6. So I just put everything in today and unfortunately, the W6 is way better in a large enclosure but it is definitely still a good sub. Sounds pretty dam good in my 1 foot ported box in that Cooper. Lets just say I am still going to have to Dynamat my Cooper thanks to this W6. If you have the money to go JL audio, you definitely should. Pricey but worth every penny.
Pros:
Deep accurate bass. Doesn't skip a beat, literally.
Cons:
Not as good in a 1 foot ported as it is in a 3 foot ported.

JL Audio 12W6v2

Written By Garticus, Orlando, Fl on Sunday, January 13, 2013

I have used a 12W6 for about 4+ years in several different vehicles powered by a JL 500/1 amp with excellent success....pure listening enjoyment, clean & accurate with a tremendous bass wallop! (Reggae, jazz, classic rock, salsa, soca, heavy metal). After my stereo equipment was stolen, I replaced my equipment, still using a 500/1, and a 12W6v2 which has been beating very hard for over 6+ years in 4 different vehicles and it has been sounding perfect in all. This sub has lasted me a long time and still rocks like it did when new. I am sorry to say I will not use this in my current vehicle......because the enclosure I will make can only hold a 10" (so I will use a 10W6v2 instead)

JL Audio for life.
Pros:
Longevity, sound quality, ability to play well in small enclosures.
Cons:
They were not made back in the early 90's when I got into car audio.

Unbelievable Sound

Written By JR, North Florida on Friday, March 02, 2012

I surprised my son with a new stereo for his 2002 Tahoe built with this 12w6 in a box built to the JL Audio specs for 32 hz and paired it with the 500/1 JL amp. He was disappointed when he saw there was a single 12" sub in the box until I turned it on and turned it up. The depth and volume of the single sub was unbelievable. He has shamed multiple people with giant boxes and multiple subs. After 6 months of hard playing and stepping up the door speakers to JL with an amp to match the sub he has an outstanding sounding system that people are spending 3 times the dollars to match. I would highly recommend them , even for the high price.

The installer had used this sub before with lesser results and the conclusion was you have to make sure you have the box perfect.
Pros:
Great sound from a single sub

Will Go With No Other

Written By TattooQ, Lafayette, La on Sunday, November 20, 2011

I started out with a set of Image Dynamic 12's then decided it was time to upgrade. So I got a pair of the 12w6v2's and hooked them up to a Memphis 1100d that was back in 2004. I am about to put the same set of subs in my third car. They have exceeded all my expections. I listen to alot of hard core music and they keep up with what ever I throw at them. I love them and refuse to go with anything else. I am running about 1300 watts rms to them and they just eat it up. Of course I have had to upgrade all my full range speakers. When I set them up with all Diamond speaker the sound jsut blew my mind. Thay put out such a clear and crisp bass and able to hit what ever bass note that is thrown at them. To some people having 2 of these w6"s may be over kill but for me I love having my car sound like I am inside of a headphone. Where I can hear and feel everything that is coming through the speakers. They were the best investment in in my car audio system and have out lived any other subs I have ever owned. I surely recommend them to anyone. And it doesn't it take 2 of them to get great sound. Just one in a correctly built box takes care of buisness.
Pros:
I love everything about this sub, a bit pricey but worth every penney.

Best over all sub I have experienced to date

Written By Nathan, Cincinnati, Oh on Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Finally after years of debating weather or not JL Audio was worth the money I decided to splurge and try it. I've had entire Rockford setups,MTX, and Kicker. I'm picky and have to have everything matching. I built a custom slot ported box tuned to 32.2 hz as recommended by JL for the 12w6v2 and paired it with a slash 500/1. It is by far the best 12" sub I have personally heard to date. I listen to just about any music you can come up with and it handles it all with brilliant accurate sound. And It's loud as HECK. In any of my future setups if I can afford it JL Audio is what I'll be using. Pricey, but in this case you get what you pay for.

Beautiful SQ sub, best value in the JL line

Written By Pyrotechnick, Boston, MA on Friday, June 17, 2011

This sub is getting 500W from my JL HD 900/5 in a SQ setup and I absolutely love it.

I recently converted from a 10w7 and I'm very happy with the change. With the 10w7, I had to set my gains up uncomfortably high to keep up with my front stage. I didn't want to buy a new amp or upgrade my electrical system, so I gave the 12w6v2 a try. The 12w6 is much more efficient, being rated at 600W vs 750W for the smaller 10w7. Also, the 12w6 is 10lbs lighter than a 10w7 and uses a box that is exactly the same size! Overall, it sounds much better in my car, probably because it has greater cone area and is a better match for my amp.

I know it's not super helpful to compare across different models and sizes, but that is sort of my point. The w6 line is more efficient, lighter and cheaper than the w7 line, with virtually no difference in SQ. This translates into more bang for your buck and trunk space IMO. If you have tons of money, wattage, and space, then by all means consider the w7 line. But if you are like me and want the best sound you can get with the least drain on your wallet and electrical system, then the w6 line is a better value overall.

I also love the full-cover mesh grill. No more worrying about luggage damaging my sub!

12" W6 = Best Sub

Written By Cody, OK on Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Cleanest sounding sub I've ever seen, plus hits super hard. Sounds like two high quality 12"s. I've got a JL XD600/1 Amp wired at 2 Ohms, pushes it perfectly. Already making plans for another 12" W6 and XD600/1. I've always been a big JL fan, they're simply the best out there. In short, it has quickly become my favorite sub and without a doubt one of the best on the market.

JL Audio 12W6v2-D4

Written By Cogito84, Portland, OR on Monday, January 31, 2011

While the following may seem like a "radical" ratio its validity is fundamentally spot on. Car audio is 80% "Install" and 20% "Equipment". Empirically, that ratio means if you drop a 12W6v2-D4 in a band-pass enclosure with the . "ahem" prestigious* JL Audio 500/1v2 powering it, loaded in a "beater", for instance, with duct tape as sound deadener, it will sound horrendous.
Unlike other reviews, I will not recommend purchasing the 12W6v2-D4, especially if you're on a budget. I purchased this driver simply because I had the opportunity. For very similar, if not exceedingly higher performance, I recommend MTX ThunderT8512-44, and Infinity Kappa 120.9w. I encourage you to do some research and attain the Bl(x)-Graphs' on these drivers'. You can accomplish this by looking online, or contacting the manufacturer directly. I wouldn't be surprised if they're very similar, if not, better than the Bl(x) curve that the 12W6v2-D4 possesses.

Hits hard

Written By Mike W., lima, oh on Tuesday, August 24, 2010

I've had RF's, Kicker L7's, JLw3v3's and this sub has a much harder punch to it. L7 had a grumbly low sound which i liked but this sub is accurate,, as loud as others out there but more than anything i was amazed at how hard it hit.
not much else to say, its a bit over priced, there are others that are just as good for less. hits harder and louder than the W3v3 though. You could get 4 cheaper subs for the cost of one of these and it would be far louder.

JL Audio 12W6v2-D4

Written By Andrew, Huntington Beach,ca on Thursday, March 25, 2010

12w6v2 in a sealed inclosure to the exact specification JL said and it sounds
crisp, low, filling, hits hard and doesn't make your ears hurt at high volumes
like fosgates or kickers, which i've both owned. I've had the 12w6v2 for over
6 years and has only gotten better the more I listen to it. Everyone that
listens to it thinks I have two subs, but if you power it with a JL monoblock
500/1, it will sound better than any sub... Buy it, worth the money.

Just Incredible

Written By Anonymous, Fayetteville, AR on Friday, November 06, 2009

I started of with a jl 10w0 from a long time ago that is paired to a 400.2 Amp. the sub eventually gave out and i upgraded to the W6v2 with a custom box. I love it. Besides the fact that the amplifier can only put out about 100w when bridged at 2ohms, it sounded impressively loud. Louder than my buddies 12 alpine r at 500w or my other friends 2 pioneer 12s at 1200w. Amazing. The sub is so powerful it destroyed my amp. Upgrading now to full zr650 csi kit with the new 500.1 slash v2 amp. Oh, did i mention before the amp blew that the sub broke my front windshield? Yea, its that good. Can't wait for the full kit to get here, i'm looking to break every window in the car. JL for Life.

Hits Hard and Deep but not in a small box

Written By 2fast4thelaw, Denver, Co on Monday, June 29, 2009

I replaced my JL Audio 12W3v3 4 ohm with this subwoofer so I could run my amp at 2 ohms to get 600watts out of my Alpine MRD-M605 amp. I was expecting much more output and even better sound quality in the same 1 cubic ft sealed enclosure. It hit a little harder but it didnt sound as good as the W3v3. This suprised me but it also leads me to believe that this sub is better suited for a large ported enclosure to really get the most out of it. I tested this theory and put it in a 3 cubic foot ported home theater cabinet with a 500 watt amp and it blew me away! The sub had deep bass extension that I have never before experienced and it shook my house. Ironically I found that this sub makes a better home theater sub than a car sub. It decimated my home sub in every aspect and this is a reference class home theater subwoofer that cost $1800.00.

Bottom line, if you must go sealed and need to save space, dont's spend the money on this sub for that application, get a W0v2 or a W3v3. If your willing to go for Big ported box than you must buy this sub! The excursion is insane and it hits so LOW you cant even hear it but you feel it!!

WOW!

Written By Kevin, San Diego, CA on Sunday, August 31, 2008

Wow! This thing hits sooooo hard! I hooked it up to an Alpine MRP-M450 in an 07 Civic SI and the rest is history. The gain was all the way down on the amp and it hit so hard! This thing knocks. The bass is so loud but tight and crisp. It is very accurate! On my way home after having it installed, I got lit up by two cops but they both let me go because I told them I just got it. I thought I was gonna get a disturbing the peace ticket. Wow I definitely reccomend this subwoofer for anyone looking for something that will hit and do it for under a grand. My setup is the sub, amp, enclosure, and a MTX RE-Q bass restoration & signal processor installed. Best thing I've heard!

Great SQ

Written By Corey, Atlanta, Ga on Tuesday, July 08, 2008

This has been the first sub that I chose to use in my car because I spent a good amount of time researching what to use for great bass that's not overpowering but has great SQ and can hit the low frequencies I was looking for. I have a hi-fi system and this JL sub complements my highs and mids extraordinarily well. Whether you're looking for great bass or great SQ, this sub can do it all. Needless to say I'm very pleased with it and have no regrets spending the money on a GOOD sub. I'm also happy to see that Crutchfield has acquired JL and am still awaiting my 12w6 grill from Crutchfield to help protect the cone from anything I decide to throw in the trunk. I'd also recommend using some Dyanamt Xtreme that Crutchfield sells for sound deadening..you'll notice less vibration, less road noise, and less distortion.

BEST 12 ON THE MARKET

Written By Tad, Indianapolis on Saturday, November 10, 2007

Just purchased a 12W6v2, wish I knew JL was going online with Crutchfield! Placed this in a small enclosure and it sounds WONDERFUL! The W6 is known for its ability to sound great in small enlcosures, and after hearing it, I'M A BELIEVER! Sound quality is second-to-none. JL Audio W6 and W7 subwoofers are WAY above the competition, especially on Crutchfield. I love Crutchfield, so I'm pleased to see they have teamed up with the best in car audio!

Worth every penny

This is one of the best subwoofers I have ever heard. I compared several brands (MTX, Alpine, among others) before buying JL. You will spend a bit more, but you also get your money's worth. Do yourself a favor though, and get a custom built box, don't use a prefabbed box.

Car Alarms Hate W6s

Written By Theo, Oceanside, CA on Saturday, November 03, 2007

I have a pair of these in my 05 Frontier, and everyone who's been in my truck never wanted to get out. I have them hooked up to a JL 1000/1 and I still have not maxed them out. Maybe, it's because I'm afraid I'll destroy something....ask my buddy, he blew out his rear window!!!These subs are by far the best 12's on earth. Loud, clean and very powerful, whatever you listen to, you will definitely be impressed. I've felt bass in my chest, but never my throat!!!
