Fit huge bass into tight spaces

You can get great-sounding, big bass in your sports car, truck, or any other compact vehicle. JL Audio rises to the challenge of compact spaces with their TW5 thin-line subwoofers. Engineered for use in extremely small boxes, these subs fit in places where only 6-1/2" or 8" subs would previously go, for astoundingly deep, resonant bass without the large enclosure.

This sub can fit places many subs can't.

A super-thin sub that rivals bulkier speakers

The 13TW5v2-4 13.5" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS, while boasting a 2-5/8" mounting depth that makes it ideal for tight spaces. The cast-alloy frame provides a rock-solid platform for the mica-filled polypropylene cone and its resilient Santoprene™ rubber surround — you'll enjoy consistent, full-bodied bass output that won't distort under heavy excursion. The sub's 4-ohm impedance makes it a great candidate for multi-sub installations.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 450 and 900 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

This woofer will be more than enough for the average bass head. The two main things to get the full potential is the exact box, and matching amp which in my case is a kicker cx1200.1 mono putting out the 600 rms@4 ohms this woofer craves. I tuned my gain to get the full volume from my deck and this thing just hits you where it hurts. This is all done in my s2000 which are incredibly hard to get great sound out of, but with this woofer there is no issue. I'd love to hear how it would sound in a hatchback/SUV. JL has hit a homerun with this bad boy! Do yourself a favor and grab one or better yet 2. ;)

Pros: Eveything

Cons: None, people complain about the price but the simple matter of it is if you wanna sound great it's gonna cost.

Although a little expensive, you get what you pay for; this sub is incredible. Getting this type of low frequency performance out of any similar size sub is rare. Getting it with a 2.625" mounting depth and .8 ft^3 of sealed airspace is rediculous.

Pros: High quality, truly unique

Cons: Price (totally worth it IMO)

This sub is excellent for its purpose and very capable. I built a fiberglass enclosure for my spare tire well (2013 Mazda2) and measured .815 cubic foot. I initially powered the sub with 240 verified RMS and it sounded bad. Since then I have reamped up to 600 RMS and it sounds great and it plays low frequency like 20-30hz very well but kick drums could have more punch and authority. The sub has already knocked of my rear view mirror and the sub really isn't broken in. I have considered a new enclosure and adding maybe 3 more subs, but I don't know if the car would hold together!

Pros: Very small concealable enclosures, terrific low frequency

Cons: Pricey, not as punchy as long Xmax subs, long break in period

Product Research

Thin-Line Design: The patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 subwoofer and allows it to deliver great bass performance in tight space applications, requiring only 2-5/8" depth. Central to the technology is the Concentric Tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the motor structure much further forward in the speaker than in conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability. Equally important, the design is optimized for extremely small box volume applications.

Concentric Tube Suspension: A challenge in any low-profile woofer design is to permit enough mechanical clearance for the speaker to handle power and generate good output at low frequencies. JL Audio's patented solution employs a molded structure which spans over the edge of the motor system, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps JL Audio move the motor structure into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting substantial mechanical excursion.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 13TW5v2-4 motor maintains a linear force over a long excursion range and stable, fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is a method of attaching the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly to maintain proper surround geometry, thus improving excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Voice Coil: To counteract the efficiency tradeoff of small box volume, the 13TW5v2-4 is designed to handle very high power levels thanks to the use of a very large 7-inch diameter voice coil.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a sealed box size volume of 0.8 ft³, resulting in a -3dB point of 41.42 Hz. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 19" W x 15" H x 7.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick MDF. (If using 5/8" thick MDF, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Shallow Mount Design: The JL Audio 13TW5v2-4 only requires a mounting depth of 2-5/8" (top mounted).
