Features

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.

Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.

Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 0.15 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 9" W x 9" H x 6.75" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Can it not be mounted in a ported box ?

You can absolutely use the JL Audio 6W3v3-4 in a ported box, JP. For best results JL Audio recommends an enclosure size of .25 cubic feet with a slot port. Exact specs for the ideal enclosure are provided in the owner's manual to help with your custom box building!

Q
Would this be a good open air replacement sub in the rear deck for a 2003 mercury marauder? John Hall-Miami
john  Jun 21, 2022
1 answer
A
This JL 6W3v3-4 is only recommended to be used in a sealed box by JL sadly, John. This would only work well if you could modify the original plastic factory sub enclosure and custom mount this in. This subwoofer has a top mount depth of 4 3/16", in case you want to take some measurements and try to make it fit!

Could this go open air in a door? Or does it need to be in a small enclosure?

For best sound, I recommend to built a small enclosure.

I had to cut more depth out of my back window slot to get it in but in a door it probably would stick up too much.

Q
So I selected no aftermarket amp as one of my options do I need an aftermarket amp or does my truck already have enough amp to cover this speaker 2012 gmc Denali with Bose sound system?
alex  Oct 21, 2020
2 answers
A
Hey Alex. You do need an after market amp. I have a 500 amp amplifier. I starte with one sub and added the second sub after. You don't need nothing crazy as far amp. My 500 amp idols just fine. Hope this answers your question.
juan  Oct 21, 2020
A
your Bose sound system was installed with a factory amp. For the JL audio subwoofer you will need to obtain an aftermarket amp to push a subwoofer. The factory amp will not provide enough power.

Will this fit in the center console subwoofer compartment on my 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
matt  Jun 25, 2019

A
Possibly. It fits in my tiny Toyota MR2 underneath the head unit. I mounted the speaker on 1/4 MDF that's 8&7/8" wide. It really fills out the sound well, even with the top down (though I have it connected to an amp).
steve  Jun 25, 2019

The dimensions for this speaker are in the JVC owner's manual. I highly suggest pulling the measurement from you Jeep to confirm that they will considering the above average mounting depth of this speaker.

Not sure if it will fit I that exact spot. I put two of these in my 2014 Subaru STI hatchback and they bang consider a custom box and run with it.

Q
Will this fit in a truck box under the back seat of a f150?
nick  Nov 02, 2018
4 answers
A
It depended what kind of box you use. The back seat of an f150 is approximately 5.5 inches to 7 inches off the floor so find a box to fit the dimensions of your back seat. I just custom made a box for under my back seat to fit a shallow mount 12 inch subwoofer . Just make sure you know your dimensions of the box you use. Bazooka tubes work well with that particular sub. I have that sub behind the seat in a ranger and sounds great
tyler  Nov 13, 2018
A
Clarification.....My amp recommendation was for 2 of these subs. I have them mounted in my rear doors for "fill". Your application would require significantly less power.
john h  Nov 03, 2018
A
I do not know the dimensions of the truck box. You "must" build an enclosure for these subs, sealed is 0.15 and ported is 0.25 SF. You can utilize these dimensions to decide if they will fit in the box under the seat. These are not "free air" woofers. They must be installed in the proper enclosure in order for you to properly tune them with a RTA.They will accept lots of power so do not purchase them with out a quality amp. You will be defeating their purpose. Amp recommendations: JL Audio HD600/4 or 300/4v3 ....75x4 or bridged 2x150
john h  Nov 03, 2018
A
It could, but it may depend on which model F-150 you are talking about. Also, i have seen other 6.5 inch subs work. so if the box is built correctly, it very well could.
john  Nov 03, 2018

Will it fit a 2004 Land Rover Discovery 2 rear cargo door and can it be hooked up to the factory system or does it need a separate amp to run the two subs in the cargo door?

Q
Stupid question, would these work to replace the factory subs in the front doors of my 06 ram, one just blew and I know it's the 7 speaker factory amp system and the speakers in the doors are for bass only and aren't effected by front to rear fade so I'm assuming they are on their own dedicated bass change?

Does this subwoofer have to be put on an amplifier? Can it be run without it?
james f. d.  Oct 07, 2017

A
Why did you purchase it if you plan no amplification. These subs will rock way harder then 150 RMS. If you do not power them properly, you might as well sell them!
john h  Oct 30, 2017
A
It really needs at least 150W of power. 250-300 is ideal.

john h  Oct 30, 2017

The JL Audio 6W3v3-4 is a subwoofer designed for use in a car audio system, so it's hard to envision how it would work as a replacement for your home audio Mirage sub. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question in greater detail.

will this sub fit in a bazooka tube?

Yes it will and that is a great idea I would get Crutchfield to hook you up with some fitted spacers and just make sure that it is airtight with no portEnter an answer to this question.

I don't know. The actual measured dimensions and the cut sheet agreed.
eugene  Sep 28, 2016
A
you would need to be much more specific. bazooka makes so many different tubes, and they all come with speakers in them, and have different sizes, and configurations. they're really ported and set up for the speakers they designed and come with, not some other random speaker you throw in there.

Q
Are these marine speakers? (water proof)
anthony  Jan 28, 2016

A
No, these are not marine speakers. They may be ok in Light moisture conditions. I use them in my Jeep Wrangler & have had no problems with them.
john  Jan 30, 2016
A
Have just 1 of these in the back of my soft top Jeep Wrangler. It is boxed per the specs outlined in the manual that came with the woofer. My top leaks every time it rains and soaks the entire area where it is located. This thing keeps on rocking. Have had no issues with the performance thus far.
j. scott  Jan 29, 2016
A
This is a 6" subwoofer. And it isn't water proof, but if it was mounted in an enclosure. It would be water resistant. It has a polymer cone with a rubber surround.
michael  Jan 29, 2016
A
II don't think that they are.
mark  Jan 29, 2016
Q
I have a 2014 HD Trike, I would like to put this 6.5 in my rear fender well between the tire and the rear seat, 1) do y'all make a cone that I can use to make them water resistant? and 2) do you recommend them on a motorcycle?
rider  Aug 07, 2015
3 answers
A
Your trike wiil not produce sufficient power to run these subs at there full potential!
john h  Nov 03, 2018
A
I Can't say much on your first question but I purchased this for a land rover discovery rear doors and it was a tight fit. So it may be too large for a bike. Hope this helps somewhat.
siafa  Aug 11, 2015
A
Rider, your question posts to customers like me that purchased the speakers. I'm no audiophile but I installed my speakers in a Mazda MX-6. For my application they are great subs. Know that the speakers are not water resistant so you would have to insure that rain and washing will not be an issue. Also know that these speakers need a sizable enclosure (speaker box) of which you may not have enough room to make. Check the instructions, I want to remember that they're online. I also want to remember the enclosure size is published there. I strongly suggest you call Crutchfield and present your question to them. They may have a better suggestion for you. I think you're on track considering JL speakers. I love mine and they out performed my expectations in my convertible. I'm very happy with them. No buyers remorse here. Best regards and drive safe.
roberto  Aug 10, 2015
Q
What amp would you recommend for this driver?
paul  Dec 15, 2014
5 answers
A
Well, it depends on what your price range is. I'm running a 5 chanel amp in my vehicle, and the 5th channel is putting 200 watts to the sub. And it sounds great. So, look for an amp that makes 100-150 watts RMS. Since the spec's state 150 watts max. And it will sound great for you as well. If you want ideas for amps: Alpine MRX-M55, JL Audio JX500/1D, Kenwood Excelon X500-1, Alpine MRV-M500. Any of these will power it and make it sound good.
michael  Dec 17, 2014
A
XD700/5 - JL Audio 5-Channel 700W Class D Amplifier is the amp I used because I purchased JL speakers for the rest of my setup. This subwoofer was still small enough that it would fit in my factory subwoofer box and I wanted to improve the system but keep it looking like it came from the factory.
andres  Dec 17, 2014
A
Paul, unfortunately I was unable to use this sub and returned it. I bought two of these to install in the lower fairings on my motorcycles but they didn't fit. I was going to drive them with a Biketronics 180/channel amp. Based on the specs and my research, I would use about a 150 watt rpm amplifier.
david  Dec 17, 2014
A
If running just these subs I would use the JL Audio Slash 300/4v3. But if looking for an all around system amp. I went with the JL Audio XD700/5v2.
john  Dec 17, 2014
A
I am using a linear power 452iq. It is a old school cheater amp so I am not 100% sure of its output but it is rated @ 100 watts rms mono. I would use a clean power amp rated between 100-150 watts rms. Just make sure you are using a quality clean power amp. If you are looking for a new amp I would look at a jl xd300/1 or the focal f1.350 or for any old school amp by us amps or linear power
