About the JL Audio 8W1v3-4

Legendary JL Audio engineering

When we think of subwoofers, we typically think of big speakers in large enclosures driven by high-wattage amplifiers. But sometimes you need bass in a smaller, more modest version. That's why JL Audio has created the 8W1v3-4 subwoofer, which fits in spaces where most subwoofers fear to tread.

Trickle down technology

This affordable 8" subwoofer incorporates patented features developed by JL Audio for their legendary W7 subs. Special venting keeps the sub running cool for trouble-free performance, while extensive research in cone bonding and motor assembly construction keeps its cone movement linear for precise, dependable output. The cone interlocks with the dust cap for superior rigidity, and a sophisticated suspension system keeps internal parts aligned properly when you're jamming hard.

JL Audio 8W1v3-4 8" Component Subwoofer

At only 3-7/8" deep, this sub will fit in a lot of tight spaces.

Solid bass made for compact boxes

The low-profile 8W1v3-4 sub works best in compact enclosures, so you can put quality bass in smaller and hard-to-fit vehicles. Its shallow mounting depth of 3-7/8" allows it to live in compact environments, and it's been optimized to fit an enclosure with a volume of only 0.35 cubic feet.

The sub features a mica-filled polypropylene cone and an aluminum dust cap with an embossed JL Audio logo for a look that stands out as much as the sound. The removable, customizable trim ring lets you put a personal touch on your system, and makes optional grille installation a snap. This punchy W1v3 sub works well with moderate power, delivering impressive performance without costing a fortune. Haven't you got a cozy corner somewhere that needs some bumping bass?

Features

Woofer: The JL Audio W1v3-4 subwoofer features an injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone with an embossed metallic JL Audio logo and a rubber surround for added durability, woofer excursion and bass response.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W1v3-4 motors remain linear over a long excursion range, and also maintain a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Vented Reinforcement Collar: The Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC) is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability:

  • Stress Relief: By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weakness. It does this by increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes.
  • Air Flow: The VRC also features slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings, thus reducing thermal compression effects and enhancing reliability.

Insert Molded Suspension/Coil/Terminal Sub-Assembly: The W1v3-4 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly, assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. This type of assembly ensures precise lead wire length, lead wire entry and exit angles, and coil/spider alignment.

Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the W1v3-4 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase an optional grille mesh insert specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring (item number 136SGR831, sold separately).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Enclosure: JL Audio recommends an optimum sealed enclosure volume for the 8W1v3-4 of 0.35 ft³, resulting in a -3dB point of 59.9 Hz.

Ported Enclosure: JL Audio recommends an optimum ported enclosure volume for the 8W1v3-4 of 0.5 ft³. The recommended port is 2" (diameter) x 10" (long), resulting in a tuning frequency of 38 Hz and a -3dB point of 39.1 Hz.

What amp should I use if I have 2 of these?

Greetings Chris. Thank you for your question. If you prefer to use all JL Audio, the XD 300/1v2 is the perfect amp for two of these subs. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13698601/JL-Audio-XD300-1v2.html?tp=35834

Hey Chris, running two of those, I would wire them down in parallel to 2-ohm and run them off of JL's matching amp for that series: https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c402/p_13698360/JL-Audio-JD250-1.html

Q
Will this fit in my 09 honda accord coupe exl v6?
noah  Nov 28, 2023
1 answer
A
We do not have any drop-in replacement subwoofer fits for your 2009 Honda Accord, Noah. You'll have to remove the rear deck panel to access the factory subwoofer and you'll have to make a mounting bracket to install an 8" sub. The cutout in the rear deck steel may interfere with some larger subwoofer baskets, and it's possible some subwoofers may fit with custom fabrication. You can always consider small JL Audio powered subwoofer options like the ACP110LG in the link below! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13693332/JL-Audio-ACP110LG-TW1.html

Greetings Noah. Thank you for your question. We do not have an easy replacement subwoofer for that factory location. Most aftermarket 8 inch subs have too big of a frame to fit the factory cut out hole. If you are willing to trim the cutout, after that this sub could fit. Its more of a modified type install. You might have to fabricate a mounting bracket as well.

Q
I know the recommend sealed enclosed size is .35 net, but is there a minimum size or range given by the manufacturer?
bobcat  Mar 04, 2023
1 answer
A
These specs are sometimes given with certain subwoofers, Kyle. With the JL Audio 8W1v3-4 8" there is no minimum spec listed, sadly. I would use that ideal sealed box size of .35 cubes for best results. I hope this helps!

Q
I just purchased 1 of these. I want to wire direct to my high power Sony DSX-M80 deck without an external amplifier. Should I power the sub with a single 4 ohm channel or a bridged 2 ohm (2 channels)? I understand the sub is 4 ohms.

I would recommend reaching out to an advisor to get clarification on what you are wanting to do, and whether it will work safely!(1-800-324-9695)
thomas  Apr 28, 2021 (Staff)
A
If the deck is spec'd to bridge channels @ 4ohms - I would definitely run them bridged! That's how I'm running it from my 4 channel amp. (I don't see anything on the Crutchfield specs that says you CAN bridge those high outputs...so it might burn out the stereo) Bridging outputs that are not meant to be bridge probably isn't a good route to take.
louie  Apr 27, 2021
A
That unit bridges the back two channels to drive a subwoofer and that is the way you should use it. That said, I doubt it will sound all that great, you really need a dedicated amp for this subwoofer, I drive mine with an Alpine 300 watt amp and it is barely enough. I'd recommend you use a very efficient, ported box but it still may not be enough.

Can you use these in the rear deck, open air install in the trunk ?

They sound best in an enclosed subwoofer box and put in trunk. I'd use 6x9 speakers in rear deck.

Honestly I don't know. I replaced my stock sub woofer with this but I had a built in enclosure that this sub woofer fit into. I would ask Crutchfield or a car stereo installation expert. I will say it sounds fabulous.

What is the recommended low pass crossover setting for this sub with a sealed enclosure?

I would say it depends on where you install it but I probably wouldn't go higher than 90 - 100. I have 2 of them in sealed enclosures & I'm doing 60. But my fronts are 60 & up

The JL Audio 8W1v3-4 can be used with simple speaker output but you won't get the full benefit of the Deep hard hitting Base that you would with an Amp and subamp output. If your Radio sends at least 10-20 Watts per speaker you should get good sound out of it. I truly hope this helps but if you have any other questions please feel free to let me know.
