Profound bass for the music-lover

Each W7 sub is built to meticulous standards at JL Audio's factory in Miramar, Florida. JL Audio put 30+ years of sonic expertise into their legendary W7 subwoofers, so you can expect smooth, powerful bass that enhances your favorite music.

Innovative design for impressive performance

Six patented technologies help this W7 sub deliver unmatched performance:

W-Cone

W-Cone™: a dish-shaped outer cone is supported by a second W-shaped inner cone attached to the sub's voice coil structure. This design creates a super-rigid, lightweight cone that responds rapidly for accurate bass without unwanted coloration.

OverRoll surround

OverRoll™: an innovative mounting method lets the surround wrap around the outside of the mounting flange. This method allows for more useable cone area than conventional surrounds, so this sub moves more air for deeper lows.

Floating Cone Attach Method

Floating Cone Attach Method (FCAM™): precision engineering aligns the voice coil, and woofer cone for incredibly linear woofer movement, which means you'll hear exceptionally accurate bass.

Spider attachment

Plateau-reinforced spider attachment: a collar on the voice coil eases stress on the spider for extended excursion and improved reliability.

Elevated frame cooling and pole piece

Elevated frame cooling and cross-drilled pole-piece: cone movement pumps air through vents in the frame and machined holes in the pole piece. Your voice coils stay cooler, even when you're pushing your system.

Features

W-Cone: The JL Audio W7AE subwoofers utilize a patented W-Cone design; the unit-body cone assembly maximizes cone stiffness with minimal mass. The shape also provides torsional rigidity, critical to maintaining voice coil alignment at the suspension limits. Two lightweight mineral-filled polypropylene skins are bonded together at the perimeter and the center of the assembly. The lower skin's cross-section is shaped like a W and the upper skin is the part of the cone visible from the top.

OverRoll Surround: OverRoll Surround technology allows JL Audio to make use of the entire footprint of the speaker, placing the surround further to the outside than in a conventional woofer. This means the oversized surround can support greater x-max without sacrificing cone area. An added benefit is that the mounting holes are sealed by the surround, resulting in an improved box seal.

Dual Voice Coil: Due to the 13W7AE's dual 1.5 ohm voice coils, there is greater amplifier application flexibility. The speaker may be configured as a 0.75-ohm woofer (voice coils wired in parallel) or a 3 ohm woofer (voice coils wired in series).

Ultra-Long Voice Coil: The W7AE subwoofers feature an ultra-long voice coil to enhance linear excursion, power handling and control. The large surface area of the coil offers excellent heat dissipation, while the winding height provides the necessary motivational force to achieve the excursion of the W7AE design.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary analysis method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W7AE motors remain linear in motor force over a long range of excursion, and also maintain a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. This leads to reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Forced Air Cooled: The elevated frame design of the W7AE delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Radial Cross-Drilled Pole Piece: This venting system enhances heat dissipation and power handling by directing air flow onto the voice coil former, working in conjunction with the Forced Air Cooling technology.

Progressive-Roll Spider: The large, progressive-roll spider provides precise control and motor/voice coil alignment without limiting excursion prematurely.

Plateau-Reinforced Spider Attachment: A derivative of JL Audio's VRC technology, this suspension attachment relieves stress from the spider material at high excursions for enhanced reliability.

Co-Extruded Double Lead Wires: The extruded casing and carefully engineered attachments ensure controlled lead-wire behavior under the most extreme excursion demands. Two conductors are used per connection for ample current carrying capability.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: The recommended sealed box volume is 1.875 cubic feet; a diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 17.0" W x 17.25" H x 16.5" D, assuming 3/4" thick box material (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension).

Ported Box: The recommended ported box volume is 2.375 cubic feet; a diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a slot ported box with external dimensions of 25.125" W x 17.25" H x 16.5" D, assuming 3/4" thick box material (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension). A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width: 2.0"
  • Slot Height: 15.75"
  • Slot Length: 25.375" (a right angled port with a 7.875" extension)

Q
If I wire a 13.5w7 parallel and my hd1200/1 is internally parallel what is my impendance?
joe  Jun 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Wiring this JL Audio 13W7AE-D1.5's dual 1.5-ohm voice coils in parallel would result in a .75-ohm resistance at the amp terminals, Joe. The JL Audio HD1200/1 is internally regulated (putting out the same power from 1.5 to 4-ohms) but a .75 load is far too low for the amplifier and would cause damage. Since the power is regulated, you will want to wire this speaker's dual coils in series to present a 3-ohm load at the JL amp.

Thank you for your question, Joe B. Due to the 13W7AE's dual 1.5-ohm voice coils, there is greater amplifier application flexibility. The speaker may be configured as a 0.75-ohm woofer (voice coils wired in parallel) or a 3-ohm woofer (voice coils wired in series).

Q
How much does the jl audio w7 speaker weigh?
mica  Nov 01, 2022
1 answer
A
This bad boy is beefy, Mica. JL has this subwoofer listed at a heavy 52lbs. That's mostly due to the massive magnet, helping it also handle 1,500 watts RMS!

Q
I'm torn between getting one 13.5 w7 or 2 12 w7's. What would be best? And loudest?
anthony  May 16, 2020

A
Depends what type of vehicle u are planning on installing them in?
anthony  May 20, 2020
A
If your pushing same power in both setups the 12s would probably be louder due to increased cone area vs a single 13.5. if you push 1kw to each 12 as they are rated then YES 100% it will be louder. I went to a shop to get c7's in the doors and the dude recommended i switch for same reason (said he never recommends the 13.5 simply because the 12's exist) but it was too late lol. I would go with two 12w7's given a second chance. Wish i did. (the 13.5w7 with a jl hd1200/1 amp is still a F'IN BEAST though, dont get me wrong)
brett benjamin  May 20, 2020
A
Loudest would be two but one 13.5 is a lot when you put the wattage to it and put it in the right box. I put mine in a stage 3 box and I turn heads all day long with one 13.5 w7 with an JLHD1200 running it. Plus quality sound. JL isn't made to be the loudest but accurate. If you want loud go sundown.
josh  May 20, 2020
A
You have to ask yourself if you want a little bit louder or one that extends lower. I always believe if you have the cash go with the one 13. You will see just how loud this thing gets with a ported box and the right amp. Use the money you would have spent with two 12s and get a fantastic box made and an HD1200/1 and you will be set.

Will a soundstream ar1.8000 match up good with this speaker?

In my opinion I recommend keeping everything the same brand as the speaker. I got 2 of these subs with 2 of the jl hd 1200/1 amps and it's awesome!! But I do believe the sound steam amp will work. But I also believe u are not useing the subs full potential! Hope this helps..
anthony  Nov 23, 2018

I'm not familiar with that particular model of Soundstrream. Soundstrream does make good quality equipment so I'm sure if the amplifier is at least 1200 watts it will sound great. I'm running a JL AUDIO HD 1200 to each of my 4 13W7AE spwakers. Sounds and feels great. USACI WORLD CHAMPION 2018 I play my speakers HARD and I haven't had ANY issues with ANY JL AUDIO COMPONENTS in the last 10 years. 2007 HUMMER H2 26 speakers 8 amplifiers 3 alternators 2 XS POWER BATTERIES. i run the two i have on jl hd 1200/1 and i love it i have it wired to 1.5 ohm because the hd1200/1 puts out 1200 watts anywhere from 1 to 4 ohm on a 2 ohm stable amp it would over work the amp at 1.5 ohm
