About the JL Audio 10TW1-2

Bob Bihlmayer

JL Audio Built In USA Seriously shallow

JL Audio applied all their design know-how to creating the 10TW1-2 subwoofer. This shallow-mount 10" sub works in very small enclosures and, with a mounting depth of only 4-3/8 inches, it'll fit in all kinds of tight places you don't expect a subwoofer to go.

Unique construction, built in the USA

The injection-molded mica-filled polypropylene cone with its rubber surround is housed in a specially designed cast-alloy frame that minimizes resonances. JL Audio builds this sub at their Florida factory, using their patented "concentric tube" design to compress the sub's motor structure for a smaller profile without sacrificing performance.

You can mount this sub right up against the back wall of your enclosure and it requires almost no clearance in front. If you're looking for a subwoofer that brings maximum boom to minimal space, you're looking in the right place.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Thin-Line Design: JL Audio's patented thin-line woofer technology compresses the architecture of the 10TW1-2 subwoofer and allows it to deliver great bass performance in tight space applications (less than 4-3/8" deep). Central to the technology is the Concentric Tube structure that supports the oversized voice coil and the suspension attachments. This permits placing the motor structure much further forward in the speaker than conventional designs, while maintaining excellent linear excursion capability. Equally important, the 10TW1-2 is designed for extremely small enclosure applications (0.35 ft³ sealed and 0.625 ft³ ported) and there is no pole vent, so no space is needed between the woofer and the back of the enclosure.

Concentric Tube Suspension: JL Audio's patented Concentric Tube Suspension employs a molded structure which spans beyond the edge of the motor structure, supporting the spider on the outside of the motor's boundaries and the large diameter voice coil on the inside. The large voice coil permits the magnet to sit inside it, rather than surrounding the coil as is typical in most woofers. The concentric tube structure and the elimination of a conventional top-plate helps JL Audio place the motor higher up into the cone body's space to further compress depth, while still permitting excellent mechanical excursion.

Mica-Filled Polypropylene Woofer: The subwoofer features an injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone with a rubber surround for added durability, excursion and bass response.

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 10TW1-2 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, articulate bass.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a sealed box volume of 0.35 ft³. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 16-1/8" W x 14" H x 5-1/4" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Ported Box Volume: JL Audio recommends a ported box volume of 0.625 ft³. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a ported box with external dimensions of 26-5/8" W x 16" H x 5-1/4" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

  • Slot Width: 3-3/4"
  • Slot Height: 1-7/8"
  • Slot Length: 22-1/2"

Q
What is the recommended screw to use for screwing this sub into its mounting location?
james  Feb 13, 2024
1 answer
A
Screws are not included with the JL Audio 10TW1 subwoofer, James. The Metra HWP-0001 pan head screws in the link below would be an excellent choice! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120HWP0001/Metra-HWP-0001.html

Q
The grill for this sub comes preinstalled. Can it be removed? If so how?
darek  Jan 19, 2024
1 answer
A
The JL Audio 10TW1-2's grille can be removed Darek. It is a pressure fit, so carefully pry it out with a panel pry tool like the Boyo's in the link below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_126CR3NGL/Bojo-Trim-Panel-Tools.html

Q
Hello, this JL Audio 10TW1-2 outlet, What does it mean? Is it an open box deal, used? or a brand new product???
angel  Dec 22, 2020
1 answer
A
Our outlet stock could be open box, scratch and dent, or factory refurbished. Since outlet stock and availability varies over time, I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check its availability in outlet stock and which of those three options we have at this time

If the enclosure is sealed, that is the ideal dimensions for the subwoofer. No poly fill needed

Q
I'm considering running two of these in the back of my Chevy Colorado, powered by a XD600/1v2 amp. Would that be too much bass? Am I better off with just one 10TW3-4?
todd  Aug 30, 2019

A
I have 2 in my 17' tacoma with a 600/1 monoblock with the stock head unit. components all around in front. (JL's) Great balance . Very pleased

Q
Will this work in a prefab box with .40 gross Cu. Ft. and speaker hole cutout of 9.20" ?
david  Mar 22, 2019
1 answer
A
For a nonported enclosure a net volume of 0.35 cubic ft is suggested. Driver displacement is 0.047 so exact gross volume is 0.397 cubic ft so 0.40 is correct. Suggested hole cutout for driver is 9.06" And mounting screw diameter is 9.70" so with a hole of 9.20" this leaves only 0.25" for screws. Driver depth is 4.36" so ideally there should be 4.5" min from face of enclosure to back of the inside.

Q
What's the best amp to go with two of these subs?
mr.steel  Oct 25, 2018
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
Can I mount this on my rear deck? I have a stock OEM 8" mid-sub, and I'm thinking about making the cut-out bigger. Would this sound good using my trunk as a it's "box"?
new user  Oct 23, 2017
1 answer
A
The space in a typical trunk is large enough to on influence the subwoofer like a box will and needs a free air subwoofer to sound good. This subwoofer is not free air. We have some that are. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Q
Will this work in a .8 cubic ft sealed box?
mark  Oct 14, 2017
3 answers
A
No you need to be around .4 cu.ft. On a sealed box.
ben  Oct 15, 2017
A
The box I used had a volume of .4 cubic feet. I would think the larger box would bring more sound. I've had good results as I'm only filling a regular cab pickup. I've also fully sound deadened the interior of the cab with tiles, closed loop foam and mass loaded vinyl. Hope that helps
paul  Oct 15, 2017
A
Yes they will I have the same style box and they fit perfect
alan  Oct 15, 2017
Q
Will this sub work in a downfire box with .81 Cu ft?
cole  Jun 25, 2015
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This sub can work in that box but it really calls for a much smaller box of only box volume: 0.35 cubic feet If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
