Features

Overview: The CP108LG-W3v3 MicroSub subwoofer system is a compact bass solution for the vehicle with limited space. This ported enclosure is loaded with a single, 4-ohm 8W3v3 woofer.

Enclosure Design: The enclosure features top-quality MDF (medium-density fiberboard), constructed using state-of-the-art CNC woodworking equipment, and covered with high-grade automotive carpeting. The driver is protected by a black steel-mesh grille. Internally, the enclosure is equipped with JL Audio's ECL wiring from the woofer to the 5-way binding post connectors. The port and binding posts are on the left side of the enclosure.

Dimensions:

  • Width: 18-5/8"
  • Height: 11-1/8"
  • Depth:
    • 5-1/8" (enclosure)
    • 6-5/8" (including grille)

Flared Port: The enclosure has a side-firing flared slot-port. The flared slot-port design minimizes turbulence and improves fidelity. The port is 1-1/2" high and 4" wide at the opening.

Driver: The 8" W3v3 driver has the following features:

  • Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
  • Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
  • Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.
  • Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.
  • Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
  • Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.
  • Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.

Q
I have a 2001 LR Discovery 2. Factory subs are in the rear door and dead. Planning to redirect/connect the speaker wires to the factory subs to this JL Audio 8" sub. Do I need an amp or will the amp powering the factory subs work?
doug  Mar 19, 2021
2 answers
A
The JL audio W3V3 8" sub has a RMS range of 50-250 watts. If you can locate the rating for factory amp and it falls in between those numbers you should have no problems. Closer to the 250 would be best
scott  Mar 31, 2021
A
I actually had a disco II as well. As far as running it with no amp, I would see what the impedance of the stock subwoofer is and seeing what the oem system sends to the stock sub power wise. It may work you just have a lot of headroom left with this subwoofer. I have it in my Jeep and I love it.

Q
How long you expect this subwoofer to last ? Mine only lasted 6 years
nelson solano  May 03, 2020

A
I would imagine there are many factors that contribute to the life of the sub. How loud or hard you play it, combined with how much power and of course distortion. Ours sounds great but still young compared to yours. I think you have too many factors for a simple answer

This is a non-powered subwoofer so it requires a dedicated subwoofer amplifier. I am utilizing a 5-channel amplifier that has a built in subwoofer channel

A
This is an outstanding product, I have never had an issue. You may need to check connections
larry  Jul 21, 2019
A
Mine turns on fine. Check the amp. If it doesn't turn on, the problem's the amp, not the subwoofer. If the amp turns on, check output connections.

Q
Can you buy two of these and hook them up to the single sub channel on the Alpine PDR-V75?
jesse  Nov 27, 2018
4 answers
A
Since the rated impedance for these is 4ohm, then 2 of them wired together would be halved for a total of 2 ohm. Your amp is rated for that, so yes, you could do that if you wish.
sylvester e  Dec 03, 2018
A
No. Chat with the crutchfield folks.
brandon  Dec 03, 2018
A
Yes, you could. Wire them in parallel so the total impedance is 2ohms. Each speaker would be getting 175watts rms and they are rated for 250 rms. If you have the room, I would suggest one bigger speaker vs two smaller ones. It will usually give you deeper bass. I have one of these in the floor of the trunk of a crv. I have 180watts going to it from a jl amp. It doesn't wake the neighbors but it sounds good to me and I listen to my music loud sometimes.
cory  Dec 03, 2018
A
Yes you could, without looking up your amp i dont know how much power it has

I had the system installed with a kicker 6 3/4 box. I exchanged the kicker for the JL Audio sub. All I did was disconnect the kicker and connect the JLAudio. I'm not even sure how to set cross over, if I'm honest I don't even know what that means. Your guidance is appreciated!

I'm not a stereo tuner my amp was a little bit too much power for that sub box so I just turned the game down I'm not sure what it said at
lance  Jul 20, 2018
A
To be honest I don't recall what I found to be "optimal" in my setup. I usually prefer around 80Hz, which is current for my 12". I do remember trying the spectrum of adjustments between the Alpine mono amp and the several Sub controls on my Pioneer Avic8200, including changing phase, slope, cutoff etc.. The sub in question here (I tried two of 'em) has a sweet spot of course, but only slightly outperformed my expensive door speakers (JL c2's in the rear and JL c5's up front) when stowed in the trunk.
sylvester e  Jul 20, 2018
A
80hz, it's not all great. Of course I had it on my golf cart. They sound better in a vehicle. I've had the 12 as well

I set at 100 Hertz

Hello, I have a small Rockford 4 channel amp running this sub box. 45w per channel rms. The front two channels are running 6.5" components and the rear two are bridged for this JL box. I have the crossover set around 80hz and that seems to have a full sound with no gaps. This box works pretty good in the double cab of my '14 tundra.

Q
Seems like reviews are for truck installs. Would it be ideal for small sedans as well?
javier  May 26, 2018
6 answers
A
I tried two of them in the trunk of my 07 Fusion. I heard almost as good bass from my 4 new door speakers, which obviously are closer in proximity. I'd say from the reviews that they would perform more adequately for trucks. I wound up getting a single 12" with much, much better results.
sylvester e  Jun 09, 2018
A
It could fit in a sedan, but probably only in the trunk. I have an extended cab tundra pickup and I could only fit it under the rear fold down seat. And just barely at that. It makes ok sound, it's decent for such a small enclosure and only 8" sub. But it won't make you say "wow, is that a 10" sub back there?" It makes ok thump for an 8". If you're planning on putting it in the trunk, that would be easy. But I'm not aware of any sedan made today that could fit a box that big in the cabin of the car.
joshua s  Jun 01, 2018
A
It's a very compact component and if you got a spot for it in your sedan it would work great....I'm thinking about ordering another one for my super duty. :)
