About the JL Audio FiX™ 82

Buck Pomerantz

To build a high-quality sound system, start with a clean slate

You want to upgrade the sound system in your car with new speakers and amps but without replacing the factory radio. However, your factory system uses unusual EQ curves and preset time alignments that work well with the cheap factory speakers, but will prevent your aftermarket gear from reaching top performance. JL Audio's FiX 82 digital signal processor removes the factory system's equalization, crossover filtering, and time alignment, providing you with a completely flat and focused audio signal that your aftermarket amplifiers and processors can turn into high-fidelity music.

Integrates into almost any system

The FiX 82 was designed to get its input signals from your vehicle's speaker wiring — no outboard level-matching devices are necessary. The FiX 82 automatically re-synchronizes any signals that have been time-delayed, returning precision to the sound. It takes your system's 2-way, 3-way, or 4-way outputs, matches their levels, and combines them into two full-range stereo signals. Then dual 1/3-octave equalizers automatically flatten the frequency response, leaving the system ready for your custom processing and amplification.

Digital features and calibration

It doesn't come much easier than this: pop the calibration CD or loaded thumb drive into your receiver, hit play, push in and hold the FiX 82 calibration button, and all the processing is done in about 30 seconds. The 24-bit 48 KHz digital processor ensures clean, low-noise signal handling and output. In addition to the standard analog RCA outputs, a digital optical output lets you connect to compatible devices with the highest fidelity possible.

Add customized tuning via PC

You can plug your laptop running JL Audio's TüN™ software into your FiX 82 to visualize and correct the system's frequency response. The graphic displays the response curve before and after the FiX 82's corrections.  The 10-band graphic equalizers on the output channels let you fine-tune the sound to fit your car's acoustics and your musical tastes. The TüN software helps when you're setting up your FiX 82, giving you direct control over its factory calibration processing and allowing you to correct the polarity of any of the inputs.

Optional remote for volume control

You'll set up your FiX 82 with the factory radio's volume control at 3/4 full. Once the system is calibrated, you can use the optional DRC-100 Digital Remote Controller (sold separately) to control your system's level while maintaining the processor's EQ restoration. You can still use your radio's volume control without a DRC-100, but the factory volume-dependent equalization will affect the tone at different settings.

In addition to volume control, the DRC-100 features a Handsfree Optimization Mode that disables the FiX 82's time-correction and adds a high-pass filter to the audio to clarify the sound when making hands-free phone calls. A multi-colored LED on the remote report the operational status of the FiX 82, so you'll know what's going on from the driver's seat.

Important Note: Some factory radios and amplifiers will not work without sensing that its speakers are connected to their outputs. If you don't have output from your factory system after installing this FiX processor, you'll need a FiX-LSA-4 load-sensing adaptor (sold separately) to correct the issue.

JL Audio FiX 82

JL Audio's TüN software lets you adjust 10 bands of equalization for each channel and see the results.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The JL Audio Fix82 is a digital signal processor designed to give world-class sound from a factory audio system without replacing the OEM radio. Its 24-bit DSP processor can combine 2-, 3-, and 4-way factory outputs, while automatically level matching into a flat, full-range stereo signal to be passed on to an aftermarket amplifier. The Fix82 will automatically correct factory time delayed outputs before summing the signals and equalizing them with dual, 30 band, 1/3 octave equalizers. Its differential-balanced inputs accept virtually any OEM analog audio signal, from low-voltage line-level to high-power, speaker-level outputs (up to 30V RMS).

Calibration: Basic calibration of the Fix82 is done using the Calibration button on the top panel of the processor. If the button is pressed for 5 seconds, the unit will start the calibration process which takes approximately 30 seconds. The button also serves as an EQ Bypass if pressed for 1 second. By connecting the processor to a PC (via USB) and running the included TuN 2.0 software, you can also access a complete suite of diagnostic panels that will show the frequency response of the input signals, as well as the corrected outputs. This also allows you to adjust the input polarity, muting, and filtering as well as initiating a new calibration. The output can be user-adjusted with a pair of 10-band graphic equalizers.

Turn-On Mode: The Fix82 offers three ways of activation via the top panel Turn-On Mode switch: Signal, DC Offset, and Remote.

  • Remote: When the Switched +12 VDC terminal gets 12 volts, the processor powers on.
  • DC Offset: Automatically turns on/off by detecting a small DC signal on the OEM speaker outputs.
  • Signal: Automatically turns on/off by detecting full-range audio signals on the OEM speaker outputs.

Connections:

  • Input: Factory audio signals are run into the Fix82 through four 4-pin Euroblock connectors for a total of 8 available input channels. Each terminal can accept up to 16 AWG wire. Along with the audio inputs, the processor includes a USB (Type-B, 2.0) port to connect to a PC for running the TuN software.
  • Outputs: The processor has two main audio outputs, analog and digital.
    • Analog: These consist of a set of stereo RCA jacks outputting a 4 volt (RMS) signal.
    • Optical Digital (S/PDIF): The digital port will output a PCM signal at 24 bit/48 kHz resolution. This was intended for use with JL's TwK System Tuning DSP (sold separately) or other processors and amplifiers that have an optical digital input.
  • Power/Ground Connector: A 5-pin Euroblock connector provides the inputs for +12 VDC Battery, +12 VDC Switched (remote input if Turn-on Mode switch is set to Remote), Ground, Remote Out (provides a +12 V remote signal to trigger aftermarket amplifiers), and a Valet In. This is provided to attenuate the overall output level by 15 dB if the Fix82 sees a ground on this terminal. This keeps other people from possibly damaging the speakers by turning the volume up too high while the vehicle is being serviced or valet parked.
  • JLID Port: The Fix82 has an RJ-45 port for use with JL Audio's optional DRC-100 Remote Controller (sold separately).

DRC-100 Remote Controller: This under-dash mounted rotary control can be used for Master Volume Control or Handsfree Optimization and includes a status LED.

  • Master Volume Control: When used as a Master Volume Control, the OEM headunit's volume gets left at the same level it was at during calibration, and the DRC-100 becomes the main volume control. This maintains a linear frequency response and best signal-to-noise ratio at all volume levels.
  • Handsfree Optimization: In this mode, the DRC-100 is used to optimize the clarity of the factory Bluetooth hands-free system. By pressing the rotary knob, this disables the processor's time correction and applies a 100 Hz high-pass filter to the output, making Bluetooth phone calls clearer to understand.
  • Status LED: The DRC-100's multi-colored LED will show the Fix82's overall status:
    • Constant green: Normal operation
    • Slow flashing green: Valet mode is active.
    • Constant amber: Handsfree mode is activated.
    • Flashing or constant red: Input signal is clipping (lower volume control on OEM headunit).

Status LEDs: Four LEDs on the Fix82's top panel display both the Input Status and the Calibration Status with two LEDs for each (Left/Right channels).

  • Input Status:
    • Green: Signal present.
    • Amber: Power on, no signal.
    • Momentary Red: Input signal is clipping.
  • Calibration Status:
    • Flashing Amber: No calibration.
    • Amber: Ready for calibration signal.
    • Flashing Green: Calibration in progress.
    • Green: Calibration successful.
    • Flashing Red: Calibration failure.
    • Alternating Green/Amber: EQ has been bypassed.

Does this work as a Line Out Converter? My HU voltage is a bit low, and I need to increase the output somehow.
thomas  Oct 31, 2017
1 answer
A
Yep! The JL Audio FiX 82 is a line output converter + DSP all rolled into one. It has speaker-level inputs which allow you to splice or "tap" directly into the factory wiring without the use of a separate line out converter. For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

Q
My factory HU has differential balanced outputs, so it puts out a clean signal. Would this be a redundant purchase? Also, I want a new 5 channel amp. So, do I need to look for an amp that accepts differential balanced inputs in order to retain my sound quality?
new user  Oct 27, 2017
1 answer
A
If your stereo does not offer RCA (unbalanced) pre-amp outputs (few factory stereos do), you'll need to use a line output converter or factory system processor (with built-in Line conversion like this JL) to create the required RCA connections for the aftermarket amplifier. Q
How do i split a 2 channel rca output into 5 channels?
jose  Oct 25, 2016
2 answers
A
The way I did it on my wife's 2015 Chrysler 200 was to use RCA Y-adapters for the front and rear channels of the amplifier. Then used the amp's RCA pre-out to send the signal to the sub amp. I used the amp's hi-pass and low-pass filters to fine tune the signals. Sounds incredible after that.
leroy  Oct 26, 2016
A
You can use RCA splitters, but it would take quite a few of them. Does your amplifier have any switches to assign signal from just two inputs? Some of them have that capability.

Q
I was looking to use this in unison with a Helix V EIGHT for powering my mids and highs using digital input. However, could I drive an amplifier off of the analog output of the FiX-82 simultaneously with the digital output supplying a DSP?
alex  Oct 06, 2016
1 answer
A
I can find no mention of an audio output switch or anything that would limit the audio to just one port or the other. I expect both to send out audio at the same time with the digital audio output's volume not being controlled by the Fix 82. Q
So how will this work with the 8.4 alpine systems in the 2016's rams...What if i just want the better quality, will i still need speaker and amp upgrades..How will i set this up if factory hu doesnt have a cd player??

A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
Fader/balance: can I use a 5 channel input setup( 4 doors and sub) with the fix82 and still have the fader/balance functionality from the orginal headunit when connected to a JL 700/5 amp? thanks
ksm  Feb 03, 2016
1 answer
A
This unit will take your 5 channel input from your factory source unit, then merge them into a digital stereo signal. From there, it will use a 31 band equalizer to completely flatten the signal to give you a perfectly clean signal. The output is either analog stereo RCA's or Digital stereo TosLink. From this unit, you would need either an electronic crossover or another DSP unit so you can shape the sound to the interior of your car. If you have the XD 700/5 and you are using full range for the front and rear, you can select two channel input mode and use the built in crossovers to filter out frequencies that your fronts/rears/subs cannot reproduce. The Fader from your head unit will no longer work. You can use the gains on the amp for proper sound stage, but you cannot change that on the fly. I heard a rumor that JL Audio may be coming out with a multi channel version of this for people who wish to retain use of their fader control.

Q
I had a similar question Jose posted regarding the the connection of a 5 channel amp to the JL Audio Fix 82. My amp is a circa 1995-1996 Soundstream Reference 705 (not 705s). I'm good with the answer provided regarding the 2 channel output, works for me as well. My questions are. Are there any added benefit to adding more than one channel to "sum up" or is just hacking one speaker line level wire good enough? Will the signal from using just one line level wire, say the one to the rear speaker, going to provide the full range output (high end range and low end)? What gauge power and ground does this unit require? I'd rather not run a thin power/ground from the battery to the trunk.seems silly. I have a 2015 Chevy Malibu 3LT. Thanks for any info you can provide.
steve  Jan 22, 2016
1 answer
A
Some vehicles have amps that slit the audio to each of the drivers in their system. When this happens, that audio must be summed back to a full range sound and is the time that you must connect multiple channels on the input of this item. I recommend using 12 gauge wire to install it. There should be other places to pick up a connection point for these wires and I recommend giving our technical support a call for install help. We automatically include their number on the invoice that comes with the order.

Q
Is the digital out a fixed volume or does it change with the volume of my stock stereo?
pdqwrx  Dec 29, 2015
1 answer
A
The digital output is a fixed output. If you plan to use this connection, you'll also need an external DAC (digital to analog converter) or processor that would allow you to adjust the pre-amp signal level before connection to your amplification. I hope that helps!

Q
Jl audio fix 82. How do i connect my 5 channel amp with jl audio fix? It only has a 2 channel output. I have the jl audio hd 900/5.
jose  Nov 29, 2015
2 answers
A
I have this unit with the HD900/5 as well. You do lose fader controls, but if you add the subwoofer control knob it allows you to independently adjust the subwoofer level. I found the fader controls to be a non issue, it just took a little time to set the gain properly on the rear channels relative to the front channels.
jeremy  Jan 13, 2016
A
The JL Audio HD 900/5 amplifier provides a flexible input section via the "Input Mode" switch on the side of the amp; when using this JL Audio Fix 82 processor, you would select the "2ch" input mode which allows operation of all five amplifier channels with only one pair of input signals.
