JL Audio

Our take on the JL Audio A Series A4300

JL Audio builds their A-Series amplifiers with the high-end technology that's made their amps legendary. These hard-working amps feature an advanced thermal and low-impedance protection system that doesn't shut your amp down when the going gets tough. Instead, it rolls back peak voltage demands to protect the amp, while continuing to play your music at a safe power level.

The A4300 4-channel amplifier puts up to 110 watts RMS out each channel, and JL Audio's patented Class-AB amp circuitry delivers exceptional, natural sound with extremely low distortion. JL Audio amps use "differential-balanced inputs" to isolate the signal's ground from the chassis ground, reducing noise and making this amp compatible with almost any system, including most factory radios.

Tunable high- and low-pass filters, and a bass boost give you precise control over your sound. The optional RBC-1 remote lets you dial in your bass from the comfort of your front seat.

Features

Four-Channel Full-Range Amplifier: The JL Audio A4300 is a class AB full-range amplifier that is rated at 70 Watts RMS x 4-channel in 4 ohm at 20 to 20,000Hz with a signal-to-noise-ratio of  104 dB and a total harmonic distortion of 1% while receiving 14.4 Volts or 45 Watts RMS x 2-channel in 4 ohm with a total harmonic distortion of 0.08% while receiving 12.5 Volts. The amplifier can be bridged to output 220 Watts RMS x 2-channel in 4-ohm at 14.4 Volts or 150 Watts RMS x 2-channel in 4-ohm at 12.5 Volts.

Absolute Symmetry A/B Circuitry: The JL Audio full-range amplifier benefits from a patented technology called Absolute Symmetry to deliver amazing fidelity with extremely low distortion over a wide range of load impedances. The JL Audio amplifier features a revolutionary Class A/B circuit that employs identical N-Channel MOSFET transistors for push and pull with true buffering from the load impedance. This is accomplished via a patented circuit that reverses the operation of one of the transistors in each pair to achieve absolute power symmetry and extremely low distortion over a wide range of load impedances.

Simplified Gain Setting:  The A-Series amplifier makes setting the gain level of the amp via the input sensitivity control very simple. All you need is Digital AC Voltmeter (142TK12V, sold separately) and a Test CD Disc (503CD104, sold separately) with a sine-wave test-tone recorded at 0 dB reference level in the frequency range to be amplified for that set of channels (50 Hz for subwoofer channels, 1 kHz for a midrange application).

Differential-Balance Inputs: The JL Audio amplifier features differential-balanced input architecture to effectively control noise and ensure compatibility with a wide variety of source units, including many OEM systems. Without resorting to line output converters, you can directly connect most OEM source units to the JL Audio amplifier without creating any noise or compatibility issues. Unlike conventional single-ended inputs, the differential-balanced design does not connect one side of the audio signal to chassis ground.  This eliminates any voltage sensitivity between one input terminal and ground and greatly reduces the incidence of alternator whine in a typical car audio installation. The A4300 amplifier provides range switching on each of its inputs via the "Input Voltage" switch. This permits connection to a wide range of source voltages while retaining excellent sensitivity setting precision.

Note: You will need two speaker wire to RCA adaptors (136CLR2SW, sold separately) to connect this amplifier to your headunit via speaker-level.

Flexible Preamp Outputs: The A-Series amplifier features one pair of preamp outputs that make connecting multiple amplifiers simple. The A4300 features pass-through preamp outputs which can take their input from the amplifier's 1 & 2 channels or from the sum of all four channels.

Input Mode: The A4300's input section allows you to send signal to the amplifier section through the use of either two or four differential-balanced inputs. You can either send four discrete channels into the amplifier by connecting an RCA cable to each input of the amplifier from your headunit or feed all four channels by using only two channels by connecting a set of RCA cable from your headunit to only the amplifier's 1 & 2 inputs.

Active Crossover: The A-series amplifier provides a crossover network to fine tune your system effectively and accurately. The A4300 offers the following independent crossover adjustments for the 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 channels.

Filter Mode: The amplifier allows you to select either a Low Pass, High Pass or Full-Range operation of the amplifier's 1 & 2 channels and 3 & 4 channels.
Variable Frequency:
You can set the amplifier's Low Pass or High Pass crossover from 50 to 200 Hz for channels 1 & 2 and channels 3 & 4.

Bass Controls: The bass boost circuit of the A-Series amplifier offers the following controls that only effect channels 3 & 4 of the amplifier.

Bass Boost: The amplifier is equipped with a fixed +6dB, 48 Hz Bass Boost.
Remote Bass Port:
The amplifier is equipped with a connection for a wired Remote Bass Control (136RBC1, sold separately) that allows fully variable boost control (0-12dB) from the front of your vehicle.

Advanced Rollback Protection: Should an A-series amplifier ever overheat, its
intelligent, unregulated power supply reacts by limiting available peak voltage until the amplifier returns to a safe temperature range. Likewise, if an impedance lower than optimal for the amplifier is present at the outputs, the A-series amplifier will roll back peak voltage to protect itself without shutting down.

Note: There is only one condition that will shut down the A-Series amplifier completely and that is if the battery voltage of your vehicle drops below 10 volts.

Protection Circuitry With Status Indicator Lights: There are two status indicator lights on the right side of the amplifier.

Power (Green): This LED lights green to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
Protect (Red):
The Protection LED lights Red to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated to prevent product failure due to a short-circuit or a dangerously low impedance connected to the amplifier's outputs.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Left Side Of Amplifier:

Power and Ground: The JL Audio amplifier's set-screw Power and Ground connections are designed to accept 8 to 4 AWG power wire.
Remote Turn-On:
The A-series amplifier's set-screw turn-on lead will accept 18 to 12 AWG  wire.
Speaker Outputs:
The A4300 amplifier's eight set-screw speaker terminals will accept 16 to 8 AWG speaker wire.

Right Side Of Amplifier:

Preamp Inputs: The amplifier features two sets of differential-balanced RCA jack inputs. The amplifier's input level can be set to Low (200mV-2V RMS) when connecting the amplifier to a low-level preamp signal or set to High (800mV-8V RMS) when connecting the amplifier to a high-level speaker signal.
Preamp Outputs:
The amplifier also features one set of filtered preamp outputs so you can send a filtered audio signal to another amplifier in your system.
Remote Bass Port:
The amplifier is equipped with a connection for a wired Remote Bass Control (136RBC1, sold separately).

Not a High Current Amplifier

Written By john, wausau, wisconsin on Monday, February 25, 2008

Well after reviewing this amplifier for a couple of weeks now I can fairly describe this amps weakness, and strong points! The pro's about the amp it's an amp that delivers very fast and tightly controlled sound(accurate), also very clean amp power I couldn't detect any hisses with my ears even with the gains all the way up just to detect them. Overall a very linear sounding amp.
The construction has to be seen in person very nice quality solid construction, mainly all aluminum and the black powder coated sides are of cast aluminum very sturdy mounting options. Now it's really up to you if you would consider this a bad thing or not, but this amp isn't really designed for anything much else than accurate sound quality, why do i say this? because #1. It's not a high current amplifier, it doesn't kick so to speak my speakers with enough juice to produce the dynamic punch Im after, well at least at normal listening levels when compared to my old school amp the MTX RT4240 Amplifier rated similiarly in wattage 45rms x 4 #2. It doesn't have a general bass boost option for full range operation which I find a let down, only bass boost option it has is for low pass, and only at the rear two channels which I find kinda useless. I guess this amp was designed mainly for sound quality hence the lack of bass boost(distortion induceing). Well Ive seen the insides of this amp before and it's very clean neat design, but also a design that isn't made for high current,(now I understand why this amp isn't high current) not all the capacitors are rated for high temp operation, only the ones for the power supply unit are, but the ones for the output are rated at a lower 85c instead of 105c, not only that but the output caps seem to lack(rated only at 2200uf for each channel) to give enough current to really hear dynamic bass,(beats) in your music.Would I purchase this amp the next time? Maybe?
Who is this amp for? People who are after sound quality, and listen to classical music, and the like.
Was this amp for me? My official answer ALMOST! LOL it just didn't have enough power (high current) to kick my set of pioneer a series components in the front and back which are rated at 50rms each, it'll kick with juice and authority, but at higher listening levels that I dont usually listen to which would with most pple hurt there ears and most likely cause hearing damage. My music preference is anywhere from classical to rap to hip hop and pop so Ive been scrutinizing this amp for a while now in full spectrum.
Compared to my old school MTX RT4240 Amplifier the JL A4300 amp just didn't have enough power(current) to (thump) at the normal listening levels that i usually listen to which is about a third power without hearing damage and comfortable listening level, other than that it's a very good amp compared to all the junk amps out there nowadays, but I dont recommend this amp for any speaker systems rated over 50rms each. Sighs unfortunately MTX no longer makes any good a

JL Audio A4300

Written By Craig, Kansas City on Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Bought this from Crutchfield, free delivery in less than a week. Installed along with a Kenwood Excelon 591 deck, Polk DB 651's in front and Jensen Powerplus 693's in the rear. Amazing, crystal clear sound. Glad I spent the $$$ and went with JL. The louder I crank it, the tighter and clearer the sound. Highly recommended. Will go as loud as your ears can handle. Impressive.
