JL Audio's Evolution C2 Series speakers

Side view of Evolution C2 speaker JL Audio's Evolution C2 Series speakers bring precision sound to your vehicle. They'll reproduce subtle elements of your music like delicate woodwinds or soprano vocals, then turn on a dime to deliver the deep thrum of the bass or thunder of the drums.

Silk tweeter delivers smooth highs

The C2-650 component system features 6-3/4" woofers with rugged polypropylene cones that can handle high power without distortion, so you get full-bodied low tones you can really feel. The separate 3/4" silk dome tweeters serve up smooth-sounding high frequencies that won't tax your ears, adding a satisfying dose of realism to your soundstage.

Outboard crossovers

JL Audio includes surface- and flush-mount hardware so you'll be able to install the tweeters in the best possible location in your vehicle. External crossovers, featuring 3-level tweeter control, make sure your tunes play smoothly across the whole musical spectrum.

Note: JL Audio describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake, we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Highlights:

  • component speaker system includes 2 woofers, 2 tweeters, and 2 crossovers
  • 6-3/4" injection-molded mica-filled polypropylene woofer with butyl rubber surround
  • 3/4" silk dome tweeter
  • external crossover network with 3 tweeter levels (0, -2, +2 dB)
  • 4-ohm impedance
  • power range: 15-100 watts RMS
  • frequency response: 59-22,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 91 dB
  • woofer grilles included
  • depth: 2-7/16"

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Nice product with a reputable name. Sounds great and the brackets supplied by Crutchfield make installation a breeze. Was able to put the tweeter in the factory Bose grills in my 2007 suburban with only slight modification to the grills.

Pros: JL

Cons: None

Smooth Highs. Strong lows.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to replace a set of Infinity reference components that were stolen from my Tacoma. I went with these based on the reviews of the highs as the infinitys were a little fatiguing. However after listen with the JL tweets I miss the crisp snares and synths that I experienced with the infinitys. Hopefully with a little more tuning I can get the JL'S to sound a bit more crisp. I will say that the mid range woofer hits the lower notes a little better than the infinitys. I can hear and feel deeper notes with the JL'S while the infinitys left me wanting more punch. All in all a great component set that I would purchase again. (Speakers are paired with JL C2 coaxials in my rear doors and are connected to a Pioneer GM-D8604 Amp)

Pros: Nice mids, good bass. Smooth Highs.

Cons: Highs are good but there is more to be desired.

Sounds great

These speakers sound amazing. My issue right now is that one of the crossovers had a loose connection so I had it rma'd through an authorized jl audio dealer. It's been 2 weeks and haven't gotten it back yet.

Pros: Great sound Easy install with supplied connectors

Cons: Wires from tweeter are short but have connectors forbquick disconnect. Bad crossover. Waiting for rma

Gets the job done at an affordable price.

Cons: Crossovers are somewhat large and dont include any holes to strap or put a screw through, so mounting was difficult.

c2 650 review

Written by: Caleb n from Houston TX on May 7, 2014

I had never ran jl before and always thought they were overpriced . I happen to be listening to these components one day , I was very impressed with the overall balance and I'm a fan of the silk dome tweeters . I had the infinity reference components before these , in my opinion these sound a lot smoother , dynamic and yet still very loud when amped . These don't take a lot of power 60 rms which is great for a smaller amplifier . I have no cons on these at all if price is a big factor I think the the polk db are the best I have heard at its price point . I would buy these again if your wanting a smoother sounding tweeters like me that are not fatiguing.

Great, but not perfect

Written by: Glaneon from Near Charlotte NC on January 15, 2014

Sounds great for fronts in my 2012 Kia Forte Hatchback. I am finding the upper end is a bit shrill - but with my system (8-band EQ) I can tone that down just a bit. If I only had bass/treble control I might be disappointed. Very pleased with the full range of sound they produce. (did not purchase from Crutchfield but found the reviews here very valuable)

Pros: Great all around sound (even down to 70, +/- 20 Hz). Crossovers help ensure clarity.

Cons: Highest Hz range can be shrill. (I'm running 60W RMS to each 6.5"+tweeter, possibly less power would be less shrill)

Replaced stock Sierra speakers with these

Written by: SteveG from MI on March 15, 2013

2009 GMC Sierra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the front stock speakers in my 09 Sierra with these. Read a lot saying I wouldn't be happy unless I installed an amp too, but decided to try without the amp first.

What a huge difference! The stock speakers were very muddy sounding. These cleaned up the sound a lot. Better highs, better base, clearer voices.

Was thinking I might get a sub, but the base seems to have woken up after a couple weeks. Enough to feel the thump a bit. Not as much as a sub would, but enough to satisfy me.

Well worth doing, even without an amp!

Great sounding components

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound great, plenty of power handling. Match nicely to the JL class D amp. Only thing is... the crossover has a max attenuation of -3dB for the tweeter output, maybe I'm too sensitive to high frequencies but I'd like a lower setting. Bottom line, a system with JL quality components probably should have an EQ or signal processor anyway.

Great Sound at an Reasonable Price Point

2011 Subaru Impreza
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plain and simple... these component speakers deliver the goods! Great sound quality at a reasonable price point. They sounded great while being powered by my Pioneer AVH-P8400BH DVD receiver, however, they really opened up when I connected them to a JL XD700/5 amplifier. They have handled everything from Metal, Dubstep, Techno, Pop to Jazz without an issue. Can you do better, sure, but you would be at a much higher price point.

Pros: Smooth midrange, can handle musical peaks with ease and have a nice wide sound-stage.

Cons: Highs can be harsh at times, but not overly bright; however, I haven't tuned my system yet.

Perfect Clarity

Written by: nrwracing from portland,ct on August 15, 2010

These speakers have incredible sound quality. i have them powered by my j2320/4 amp. I set the amp exactly as in JLs directions for midbass applications using a multimeter and test disc. After complete, these speakers allow you to hear things in music you never heard before. Perfect quality, perfect sound, best components for the price. If your a music enthusiasts these are for you.

sound quality is good

Written by: ikillzombienuns from derry NH on July 31, 2010

i put these in my 2007 ford fusion and at first i was running them off my pioneer cd receiver. They sound really good even though they were only getting around 20watts RMS from my radio. I then upgraded the power to an Alpine PDX4.100 and thats when i ran into problems. At a 100 watts RMS a channel the alpine really put some power to these components. I only had the gain about half way up on my amp and noticed the tweeters were really loud and also kept clipping out on me for 10-20 sec at a time. The tweeters just couldn't handle the power and would protect themselves by shutting off. I only had the tweeters on the crossover point in the middle (ref) setting. I then set them to the -3db setting as low as i could get them. They no longer clip out and still sound pretty well. They are over all great sounding speakers minus the tweeters which r weak and very hard to tune. I don't think i will buy these again but maybe go with infinity's or boston's next time. if your not runnning alot of power they are great but if your going big i really don't recommend wasting the money on them, go with something else trust me.

Great, but not 5 star

Written by: Perry from Cedar Park, Texas on April 22, 2010

Ok, the jury is really out still - these COULD get 5 stars....if I could just get my system tuned properly. Time to dig out the DMM and do it right. So far, I think the tweeters are too brash. Mids sound perfect....but I cannot get just the right cutover point I think. I am running a Pioneer 4X75W RMS amp, and 2 sets of these, one front/one rear and I don't have the rear tweeters wired yet. I will say they seem very high quality, and fit my Kia Sorrento doors as Crutchfield said they would. Once I get the amp gain and cutover freq set correctly and the rear tweeters wired, I'll add an update.

Incredibly Clear and Accurate

Written by: Tyler from Florida on February 25, 2010

Just installed these and their powered by the JL G6600. Better than the previous VR version that I had in my other vehicle. Their clarity is incredible for the price tag, and the midbass is better than I expected. They blend very well with my JL Audio 8w3v3 sub, and they can get loud, very very loud with absolutely zero distortion. The tweeters are also extremely smooth without extreme harsh tones.

If you're looking at speakers in this price range, give these a strong consideration. Absolutely audiophile.

Woofers: The JL Audio Evolution C2-650 component speakers feature 6-3/4" injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone woofers with butyl rubber surround. The woofer has a 1.0" voice coil on a Kapton Former, a flat symmetrical roll spider, and a Ferrite magnet.

Tweeters: The Evolution C2-650 coaxial speakers feature a 0.75" silk dome, ferrofluid-cooled tweeter with a damping neodymium magnet. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. It is also designed for durability in the extreme automotive environment. Flush and surface tweeter mounting brackets are included.

Two-way Crossover System: The C2 component system utilizes a true 2-way crossover system with Mylar capacitors and air-core inductors:

  • High Pass: second order (12 dB/octave slope); three tweeter level settings are selectable via jumper pins: +2.0 dB, Reference, and -3.0 dB
  • Low Pass: first order (6 dB/octave slope)

Tweeter Protection: The crossover network has an electronic tweeter protection circuit built in; it monitors the current and disconnects the tweeter when it senses and overload. The circuit automatically resets once the overload is removed.

Crossover Wiring: The terminal strip will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.31" wide.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3.365"
  • Height: 1.445"
  • Depth: 4.732" (plus wire)

Size Classification Note: Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size speaker as a 6-3/4", while some manufacturers, including JL Audio, call it a 6-1/2". Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector for the proper size of speaker for your vehicle.

Power Handling: JL Audio lists two power figures in the manual; 60 watts continuous power handling and recommended amp power 15-100 watts RMS. We've listed the RMS power recommendation in the specs table.

I have an 2015 RAV4 and have theses speakers and 75 watt kicker amp and 51/2 kicker rear speakers and 250watt sub with stock head unit and it sounds great [ RUSSELL  Dec 30, 2015 ]
I think you will be quite happy with these speakers without the need for an additional amp or bridging. I am powering these speakers with the internal amp of an Avic Z150-BH head unit, which has similar power specs to the Avic4100. They have a great sound and plenty of volume, as long as you aren't expecting competition spl levels. I would recommend trying them out like this first ... you can always add an amp or bridge later, if you decide you need to. [ Keith  Dec 30, 2015 ]
These are sound quality speakers. I have front and rear components amplified with a alpine amp. In a 2015 Toyota Camry. Still not loud enough for me.. But are a very nice set if your not trying to get crazy [ David  Dec 30, 2015 ]
I added a 1000 watt 5-channel amp and they sound amazing. I recommend adding the amp. [ Anthony  Dec 30, 2015 ]
Hey Andrew in my opinion I would suggest that you put a amp those speakers to get the best sound quality ...I would say abot 60 too 75 watts rms to get the best sound from these..I personally have them on 100 watts rms and my amp is 1/4 the way up and they sound really good..not to say they would sound bed with the head unit but I know from my experience the amp will and more depth to the music.. [ Terrell Wilson  Dec 29, 2015 ]
I had best luck and sound running an amp,.... Of course costs a lil more but totally worth it! [ Scott  Dec 29, 2015 ]
