JL Audio C5-525

An evolved choice

JL Audio's Evolution™ C5 premium component speaker systems reproduce your music with impressive fidelity and power. Your music will sound smooth and balanced, from the splash of the high-hat to the thump of an electric bass, and everything in between.

The C5-525 5-1/4" component system features a pair of silk dome tweeters that broadcast all the musical details without a hint of harshness. JL Audio built the 5-1/4" woofers for extended cone travel so they'll move more air, putting more oomph in your music when the rhythm section kicks in. These woofers use the same patented cooling technology developed for the ZR Series speakers, allowing the C5 speakers to play with a wide dynamic range at all volumes.

The C5 crossovers feature 4-position tweeter and 3-position midrange levels that give you 12 possible adjustment combinations for exceptional control over the final sound.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Priced per pair

I am very happy with the speakers. I still have the original head unit that came with my car. I was shocked at how much better the sound in my Lotus is. I replaced the front and rear with JL C5-525 and JL C2-400x. I can hear every part of the music, even when turned low.

Good product, poor customer service on JL AUDIOs part

Written by: Dfemil from Winston Salem, NC on April 29, 2015

It pains me to give the speakers three stars, because the fact that I'm getting it three stars is not the speakers fault. I accidentally put a screwdriver through one of the woofers on installation. This was obviously my fault. I called JL audio to see if there was anyway that they could help me with a replacement or if the speaker could be repaired. I was basically told that it wasn't their problem and that I needed to speak to a retailer. The customer service representative was very condescending. That being said , I put duct tape on the speaker just to see how it would sound and even damaged they sound awesome. I thought dealing with a high-end company would give high end customer service, and in my opinion I did not get that. Too bad

Pros: Excellent Sound, all parts but wire needed for installation included, even wire terminals.

Cons: Crossover a little big, but I would take that over cheaper materials. Bad customer service on JL audio's part

i purchased these JL AUDIO C5 components because they fit my 2002 Buick park avenue ultra's front doors perfectly with out having to do any modifications to the doors. the 5.25 mid range has very nice bass with out distortion, i am not using a JL AUDIO amp yet but they do sound great! totally worth the money. the tweeter sounds very clear and works great with all music. i did noticed that these speakers sound a lot better with acoustic type music you can hear the guitar strumming clearly as if you were in front of the artist, this is no joke and no exaggeration! these are the first top knotch component speakers i purchased and i dont regret it. i also bought some JL AUDIO C5 653 components for the rear of the car. on my rear doors you can only fit 3.5 inch speakers but with some light modifiaction you can squeeze a 4 inch mid range and on the rear deck you can only fit 6x9's but i modefied the rear deck to fit the 6.5 inch woofers. this C5 component speaker line is awesome! keep in mind that the C5 653 component system some with 2 tweeters, two 4 inch mid range speakers and two 6.5 inch woofers and a crossover of course. i hope that my review helps you decide to buy these speakers. you will not regret it an believe me you really do get what you paid for with this set of components. because of this upgrade i did and made a great choice in purchasing JL AUDIO products they made me a customer for life. next in line to purchase is JL AUDIO HD1200/1 amp and the JL AUDIO HD600/4.

Pros: OEM look, great quality feel, excellent sound quality, 3 option sound levels for the crossovers low, ref, and high for the midrange section and low, ref and high for the tweeter section.

Cons: a bit pricey if your not used to buying high quality speakers.

5.25" woofer fits 911 (993) HiFi option's enclosure . . .

Written by: Ghee Buttersnaps from Vail, Colorado on March 26, 2012

Great low-mid driver. The 5.25" woofer/mid fits the MY'95 thru '98 911(993) HiFi options door mounted Nokia enclosure perfectly, and the Nokia ext. amp drives the JL 4ohm woofer noticably louder than stock. The fabric tweeter substitutes the 993s OE tweeter pod with a little work; Think art's & crafts class. The JL C5-525 kit represents a big value upgrade to the aging 911 (993) coupe's stereo system. The 993 HiFi option's bass-reflex enclosure is tuned for solid low end performance..... and the JL Audio / Kurt Muller 5.25" polyprop cone driver does the trick. Very impressive. For a suitable mid-range driver look at a version of the uber high performance Dynaudio 3" MD142 ... (VW OEM version works great)

Pros: Huge audio improvement with stealth OEM looks ... in a MY98 911 (993) coupe

Cons: There are none.

Woofer Features

Cast Alloy Baskets: The Evolution C5 component speakers feature cast alloy woofer baskets, while incorporating JL Audio's patented "Elevated Frame" cooling system. This cooling technology, also found on the flagship ZR component systems and W7 and W6v2 subwoofers, allows air to flow directly across the top plate and onto the voice coil windings to greatly improve linearity at all listening levels.

Motor Structure: The DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis)-optimized motor structure achieve outstanding linearity.

Woofer Cones: The cone and suspension elements were designed and manufactured by the world-famous Dr. Kurt Müller & Co of Germany. The speakers feature low-mass, mineral-filled polypropylene cones with butyl rubber surrounds. The cone and surround are inherently well damped to deliver an uncolored, neutral midrange without any coloration. The speakers are also equipped with symmetrical-roll, hybrid-weave spiders.

Tweeter Features

Silk Domes: The C5 component system's 3/4" silk dome tweeters is incredibly smooth on- and off-axis for accurate imaging and a big, stable soundstage.

Neodymium Magnets: The small neodymium magnets and small chassis give it excellent placement flexibility.

Performance: Each pair of C5 tweeters is tested and matched to within 1 dB of JL Audio's reference curve to ensure optimum system performance.

Mounting Options: The tweeters come mounted in JL Audio's RSR mounting system to permit precise angling of the tweeters after installation. There are five available positions for angling the tweeter inside the flush mount. The mounting dimensions are as follows:

  • Mounting Depth: 0.56" (1.67" screw depth)
  • Mounting Height: 0.36"
  • Frame Diameter: 1.758"
  • Cutout Diameter: 1.49"

Crossover Features

Two-way Crossover System: The C5 component system utilizes a true 2-way crossover system:

  • High Pass: On the tweeters is a second order high-pass filter utilizing premium Mylar capacitors combined with an air-core inductor. Four tweeter level settings are selectable via jumper pins: +2.0dB, Reference, -1.5dB, and -3.0dB.
  • Low Pass: The low-pass section features a first order filter with three levels of user-definable midrange presence: Low, Reference, and High.

Polyswitch: Polyswitch tweeter protection is incorporated into each C5 component system crossover system.

Barrier Strips: Connections to each crossover network are made via protected nickel-plated barrier strips.

Dimensions: The C5 crossover systems have the following dimensions:

  • Width: 4.17"
  • Height: 5.86"
  • Depth: 1.696"

Connection Note: The C5 component system comes with no speaker wire. Instead, a number of spade connectors and quick slides are included in the hardware pack to be crimped onto speaker wire you provide.

Why did you buy this?

I have all JL Audio components my ride. From the Sub-Woofers to the Amps! [ Carl  May 09, 2016 ]

1 question already asked

I totally understand building your system piece by piece; that's how I did mine as well. In my opinion, a better way to do this would be to start with the head unit. Most head units come with an internal amp that will boost the power in your factory speakers, which will make a huge difference immediately. It'll also allow you to customize the sound with filters, crossover settings, equalizers, etc. In my opinion, the best order in which to replace your factory system would be: Head unit, Subwoofer & amp, component door speakers. Replacing the factory speakers is a great idea; however, high-end speakers require a lot of power to perform efficiently. an underpowered speaker set can sound as bad if not worse than your factory system. I had this problem once troubleshooting a friend's boat... The amp died, so we bypassed it and powered a 100Wrms speaker set with an 18W head unit amp and it sounded terrible, like the static you hear on the radio. The HU didn't have enough power to charge the huge magnet on the back of the speakers. You will have a similar problem if you put the 525s in without supplying adequate power for them. That being said, I have my 525s powered with 50Wpc... they are incredible on the low end, surprising amount of bass for a 5 1/4 set. The highs are crisp and clear, but if I'm honest, the Polk Audio DB6501 component set has better tweeters. They maintained a little better fidelity at high volumes, where the JLs start to crackle a tiny bit. Ideally, You could mix and match the Polk tweeters with the JL woofers. But, that's just my opinion. [ Benjamin  Dec 12, 2014 ]
Yes, you'll notice a difference! Even more so once you put some power behind them. They sound incredible. Worth every penny in my opinion. [ Brian  Dec 10, 2014 ]
Yes. There is a notable difference. But I would think about a amp down the road. [ DAVID  Dec 10, 2014 ]
Depending in the kind of car you have, my Crv Soeakers were essentially 90% plastic and would have made a difference even if I did not put in an amp. I recommend doing it but get the amp next. I got a JL amp and LOVE my sound, even years later! Good luck! [ LEE H  Dec 09, 2014 ]
It depends: most factory head units don't even run enough power to get these going. So, keep that in mind - you may actually have worse sound due to that fact, unless your car has a factory amp. I got these because they were right @ the point of diminishing returns: anything that sounded noticeably better to me was significantly more expensive so it wasn't worth it IMHO.
