If you're looking to add bass to your ride without sacrificing trunk space, here's a great solution. Pair two of these JL Audio C5-525cw woofers with the right components for fatter, fuller guitar and bass in your soundstage.

JL Audio built this 5-1/4" woofer for extended cone travel so it'll move more air, putting more oomph in your music when the rhythm section kicks in. This C5 Series woofer uses the same patented cooling technology developed for the ZR Series speakers, so it'll play with a wide dynamic range at all volumes.

If you've already got a sub in the back, adding two of these woofers is great for adding some midbass punch in your interior. Even better, install JL Audio's C5-525 5-1/4" component system up front, then use two of these matched woofers in the rear to reinforce midrange and upper bass performance while keeping your soundstage right up front.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 55 and 110 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Perfect replacement for 1988 Trans Am factory sub

I purchased these little subs as replacements for the factory units in my 1988 Trans Am GTA I bought new back in the day. They worked GREAT, and sound better than the factory units did. My car uses these small subwoofers in a ported enclosure with its own amp. It wont blow the windows out, but it produces a nice deep tone for a factory stereo. Mine always performed well but succumbed to the ravages of foam surrounds, paper cones and time. Long since out of production, these small subs have been a real chore to find a replacement. I tried some local cheap stuff, but thats just what it sounded like!! These little units from JL were just what the doctor ordered!! They sound awesome! In know that isnt very technical, but its just the way it is. If you need a sub this size...just buy these and be done with it!

Pros: Well built. Deep, smooth sound...especially for such a small subwoofer. Looks great, all trendy styling

Cons: None...It is pretty hard to go wrong with JL!!

Remarkably good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These subs went into the rear deck lid of my 98 BMW 528i non DSP. The stock setup was a great setup so I decided to utilize it again and just replace the stock nokia speakers with some modern sound. Immediately I could tell the difference in sound quality. The only issue with the install was that I was expecting a direct replacement when the subs were not alligned properly and I had to reassemble till I dynamated the stock box before the install cou,d be called a sucess. Totally worth the extra time. Do not sleep on DynaMat it is worth it. For better sound ensure you have a quality crossover or mid/low pass EQ on Amp. if you get voice from these you loose bass quality dramatically. I set them up with the Alpine X Pro X-overs and the stock replacement Alpine 4x150w Can-Bus Amp.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Cast Alloy Baskets: The Evolution C5 woofers feature cast alloy woofer baskets and incorporate JL Audio's patented Elevated Frame cooling system. This cooling technology, also found on the flagship ZR component systems and W7 and W6v2 subwoofers, allows air to flow directly across the top plate and onto the voice coil windings to greatly improve linearity at all listening levels.

Motor Structure: The DMA (Dynamic Motor Analysis)-optimized motor structure achieves outstanding linearity.

Woofer Cones: The cone and suspension elements were designed and manufactured by the world-famous Dr. Kurt Müller & Co of Germany. The speakers feature low-mass, mineral-filled polypropylene cones with butyl rubber surrounds. The cone and surround are inherently well damped to deliver an uncolored, neutral bass without any coloration. The speakers are also equipped with symmetrical-roll, hybrid-weave spiders.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

It was a direct replacement for the factory Nokia Subs in my 98' BMW 540i w/DSP (rear deck subs accessed through trunk). Also, they are JL ..... Do I need to say any more? [ Brian  Dec 18, 2015 ]

There is no specification provided for the diameter of the mounting screw holes themselves. JL Audio recommends using standard sheet metal or machine screws (#8 or #6 for sheet metal screws) with a length between 1" (25mm) and 1.25" (32mm). I hope that helps! [ Ryan  Dec 11, 2015 ]  Staff
