My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

JL Audio J2 500.1

Written By Chavez51, Blair, NE on Friday, November 23, 2012

I can't be any happier with this amp. I bought it in August of 2010 and its now November 2012 and its still pushing my 12" Kicker Comps like the day I bought them. I have it mounted on the back seat of my Camry, and I'll be the first one to tell you it gets little to no air ventilation. I don't see how people can fry or ruin their JL amp and blame it on the company.

Pros: Small and powerful, price was just right. Sad to see it was discontinued.

Cons: It gets hot but that's a given.

awsome amp!

Excellent amp for starter system

Sorry to hear of other's themal problems with this J2500.1 amp and not having enough
juice to move their subs. Fortunately I'm on the other side of the spectrum and couldn't
be happier (for now) with it's power. My amp is connected via 4G wiring and up against
the rear seatback in the trunk and doesn't really get hot at all. I'm only running the gain at
around 10% but letting my receiver and inline processors do the job to keep the amp
cool. Amp pushing two Kicker CRV subs for now in a ported box 1.5CuFt/chamber hitting
around lower 140s db wise. JL Audio always satisfies my audio cravings when wired
into a proper setup. FYI guys if not running any processors or EQs try lowering the gain
to keep this amp from over heating. Enjoy!

not enough boom

I would like to say i love JL audio! The amp does get hot but, just as much as
it should though. The only problem I have is that it doesn't push my two JL
12WX subs hard enough. Sounds good in my truck which is good its just I am
slowly working on making it a show truck and you cant even hear the bass outside
my truck, my house stereo blows the system out of the water and I need it to be
the other way around, so the plan is to buy another one of these same amps and
run it. We will get back to all of you when I am done

This amp is very clear and pushes two 12's well. The only complaint I have with the amp is
it gets pretty hot. Make sure you mount somewhere where it will get plenty of air.

This amp works HARD. I have two 15" Kicker Comps, running at 2 ohms and I can feel the bass in my teeth! Only downfall is it gets hot, but that is expected...

I have always been a JL audio fiend, I believe it is top of the line for sound and product quality. I bought this amplifier in December 2009, and it died by June 2010. I was running it to two 12W3v3's which should be a solid setup. Not only did it fry, but it would constantly overheat while on road trips, or even if i were listening to music at a decently loud volume for more than an hour and half at a time. Given I was driving a black mustang with black interior in Florida in the summer, this should not be a constant problem for short periods of play time with good ventilation around the amplifier and the A/C on blast cooling the interior with one of the back seats down cooling the trunk as well. I saw the 500.1 and thought it was going to be yet another great JL product, but boy was I mistaken. It may be that I bought the amp thinking it would perform as well as the slash series do, but nonetheless I was very disappointed with this product. It ran well for the first two-three months, and then everything went downhill from there. If you can opt for the slash series I would strongly recommend it. Hope this helped.

Awesome amp!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to push this JL Audio CS210RG-WØv2-2 sub box. The amp is a beast,
pushes plenty of sound to the subs, giving them a nice clean heavy deep sound. I
couldn't be happier and the Crutchfield adviser who suggested this, Keith,
picked the perfect amp for what I wanted in my budget.

Thanks again Crutchfield.

At first when I opened the box I figured I was going to send it back, but never judge a book for its cover! Awesome amp for the price, not too bulky, and it sure does the job, well done JL. I'm pushing two JL Audio 10W1v2-4 inside a probox enclosure.

Killer Sub Amp

Written By Anonymous, Columbia, SC on Monday, March 22, 2010

This amp is amazing. I have it powering a JL Audio 12" sub in a sealed box and the sound is amazing. This amp's sound is incredibly clean and clear. I have run much more expensive amps in the past and this amp pales in comparison. The adjustable bass boost is huge and integrated with my Kenwood head unit with ease. I am now a JL Audio fan sorry Fosgate....

Mono Subwoofer Amplifier: The JL Audio J2 500.1 is a class B monoblock subwoofer amplifier rated at 340 watts RMS x 1 into a 4Ω load, 420 watts RMS x 1 into a 3Ω load, and 500 watts RMS x 1 into a 2Ω load.

Status LED: The LED changes color based on the amp's power status:

  • Red: the amplifier is turning on
  • Green: the amplifier is on and operating normally
  • Yellow: the protection mode has activated, indicating the amplifier has exceeded its safe operating temperature, the speaker outputs are shorted together, or the speaker impedance is too low

Active Crossover: The low-pass crossover is continuously variable from 40 Hz to 130 Hz and cannot be bypassed. The crossover slope is 12 dB/octave.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit is adjustable from 0 to +12 dB. The boost frequency is fixed at 45 Hz.

Remote Level Control: The 14' cable attached to the included Remote Level Control plugs into the 3.5mm jack on the left side of the amp. When the module is connected, you can control the subwoofer volume from the driver's seat. The remote is designed to mount under the dash and measures:

  • Width: 2.513"
  • Height: 1.026"
  • Depth: 1.656" (2.325" including cable and knob)

Polarity: A slide switch allows easy reversal of the output polarity (Normal/Reversed).

Power and Ground: The Power and Ground connections accept 4 gauge wire, which JL Audio recommends as the minimum size. The set-screw terminals are tightened/loosened using the included 3mm Allen wrench.

Remote Turn-On: The remote terminal will accept 10 to 18 gauge wire. The set-screw terminal is tightened/loosened using the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Speaker Outputs: The speaker's set-screw terminal will accept 8 to 16 gauge speaker wire; it's tightened/loosened using the included 2.5mm Allen wrench.

Preamp Inputs: The amplifier features one set of RCA line level inputs. The input sensitivity is adjustable from 200mV to 4V RMS.

Note: When using a single RCA input, JL Audio recommends using a Y adapter to feed a signal to both RCA jacks.

Preamp Outputs: There is a pair of preamp outputs so you can send audio to another amplifier in your system. The preamp output is not affected by the crossover or bass boost circuits.
