JL Audio's JX500/1D mono subwoofer amplifier

Compact, but beefy

You know you're holding a serious piece of sound equipment when you feel the heft of this tiny JX amp. JL Audio built it with sturdy, high-grade parts that ensure excellent heat management, provide high current flow, and deliver stable performance in almost any situation. You won't find blinking lights or meters on the outside of these amps, but you will find oversized output transistors and rugged MOSFET power supplies inside. The high-mass aluminum heatsink keeps things cool enough to virtually eliminate thermal shut-downs.

High-Mass Heat Sink: A heavy extruded aluminum heat sink is designed to keep the JL Audio JX series amplifier in a comfortable thermal range during demanding operation. This high-mass, extruded heat sink removes heat from the amplifier circuitry, extending high-power operation. This improves reliability and reduces the frequency of thermally related shut-down event.

Protection Circuitry: The JX500/1D's protection circuitry automatically shuts the amplifier down if thermal limits are exceeded, a short-circuit is detected in the speaker wiring, or if low supply voltage limits are reached.

Status Indicator Lights: There are two status indicator lights on the right side of the amplifier.

  • Power (Green): This LED lights green to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally.
  • Protect (Red): The Protection LED lights red to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated to prevent product failure due to thermal overload, a short-circuit, or a dangerously low impedance connected to the amplifier's outputs.
Controls

Input Sensitivity: The Input Sensitivity Control is used to match your source unit's output voltage to the input stage of the amplifier for maximum clean output:

  • Low-Level Input Range: 200mV-4V (RMS)
  • High-Level Input Range: 2V-10V (RMS)

Low Pass Crossover: The JL Audio JX500/1D monoblock amplifier is equipped with a 12dB/octave Butterworth low-pass filter with variable frequency selection from 50 to 200Hz.

Bass Boost: The amplifier is equipped with a variable 0 to +12dB, 45Hz Bass Boost.

Remote Level Control: The JX500/1D is equipped with an RJ-25 connection for an optional wired RBC-1 Remote Level Control (sold separately) that allows volume level adjustment of the amplifier from the front of your vehicle.

Does this amp work good with the JL Audio Stealthbox® Custom-fit fiberglass enclosure with 10" 10TW3-D4 subwoofer - fits 2010-up Hyundai Genesis coupe (Black) ?

I use this AMP with the stealth box in my 2015 Toyota Tacoma. The shallow mount JL Sub 10TW3-D4 coupled with this AMP is amazing. When I had it installed I could not believe how much bass this set up delivered. I had to remove the sub and amp later and put dynamat behind the setup due to it creating so much bass the back cab of my Tacoma was rattling. When I ordered this from Crutchfield the sales rep recommended this amp. He definitely nailed it, I wouldn't change anything about my system. I highly recommend this amp from my experience. I use the stock stereo that came with my Tacoma and a Audiocontrol LC7 which then ran to the JX500/1D amp mounted on the stealthbox behind the rear double cab. Hope this helps you make your choice.

Yes have that amp driving my 10w3 stealth box. Sounds killer for a 10" sub

hey will this amp support two JL Audio 12TW3-D4 properly>?>? and how would you recommend wiring?

Sorry, the link to the amplifiers breaks when I add the required filter for the 1 Ohm capability. You can use the filter option to the left of the list of mono amps to narrow the selection to 1 Ohm capable models. You'll just need to click the box for "1" under the "Minimum Impedance Unbridged" section.
ryan  Jul 06, 2017 (Staff)
A
No. In order to support two of the 12TW3-D4 subs the amp would need to be 1 Ohm stable (The JL Audio JX500/1D is not) and provide closer to 800 watts RMS at that impedance (400 per sub). Here is the wiring diagram for the 1 Ohm load: https://images.crutchfieldonline.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/2-DVC-4-ohm-mono-low-imp.jpg And our selection of 1 Ohm capable mono amps: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_347250/Mono-Amplifiers.html?tp=35834#&nvpair=YCMinimum_Impedance_Unbridged|1 I hope that helps My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan

Q
According to Crutchfield wire chart, I can use 8 Gauge wire, but specs says to use 4 Gauge. Should I go with 8AWG or 4AWG (8-10ft)?
aa  Mar 08, 2017

A
Use the 4 gauge. That's what I use and the amp performs perfectly
james  Mar 09, 2017
A
You could probably get away with the 8awg but you're better off with the 4awg
jennifer  Mar 09, 2017

8awg for 8 to 10 feet will work just fine

I went with 4 just to be on the safe side.

Always match the RMS wattage of the speakers as close as you can to the amp rating.
mike  Jun 09, 2016
A
Hi. It's all according to your ear. To get good solid bass I usually run it 3/4 of the way around. Between half and 3/4 should get you where you want it. Especially with cd's and higher quality audio. If the bass is too much with the radio you can back it down to half way. Experiment with it and see what fits your particular ears the best. Keep your bass setting on your head unit around 2 positive, any other bass settings you might have keep them neutral, in the middle. When listening to high quality audio once your woofers are broken in you can crank it on up past 3/4 if you want. They are 12's correct?
mike  Jun 09, 2016
A
The input sensitivity depends on the preamp voltage output of your head unit. I think most units today are around 4V which is good. Turn the sensitivity all the way down on the amp and then turn the volume of your head unit up to around 75% of the full capacity. You can adjust the sensitivity from there until you've got a good volume. Typically, the lower you make the sensitivity, the more headroom the amplifier has so it won't clip at high volumes.

Q
Is my single NVX NSW124v2 subwoofer a good match for my JL JX500/1d ? when wiring this sub in parallel to this amp, is it necessary to bridge the wiring to opposite terminals of the amp or just the individual terminals of the amp?
andrew  Mar 18, 2016
1 answer
A
The JL Audio JX500/1D is a mono (single channel) amp so there will be no bridging. You can wire the two 4 Ohm coils of the woofer in parallel to the amplifier to present a final 2 Ohm load though. You'll just have to set the amplifier gains carefully as it does offer more wattage (500 RMS) than your woofer is rated to handle (350 RMS). I hope that helps! I want to use a ported box, but there's no subsonic filter on this?
stephen  Mar 04, 2016

A
The only way I know add a subsonic filter is by getting a crossover with one in it. You can connect the crossover on the wiring between the radio and the amp. Feel free to call us on 1-800-324-9695 for a personalized recommendation. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

I'm thinking about buying this AMp I currently have 2 JL 10w3v2 would this be plenty of power?or not enough?

if I understand correctly those have a 300rms. x 2 would be 600 rms this amp is 500w. plus its a mono. my thoughts are it wont be enough. I run this amp with the jl audio stealthbox for the colorado crew cab which has the 10w3v3 with 500rms. sounds awesome, but my ears want a ported box... but thats just me.
jason  Sep 16, 2014
A
I'm not sure. What I would do is go to Crutchfield's website and pullup one of those subs. Check the specs on it and see what the nominal power rating is and multiply that times two. William
william  Sep 11, 2014
A
It will power them but you may find distortion at higher output levels because it's not pushing enough rms power for 2 JLw3s . I'd look at at least a 750 or 1000
spencer  Sep 11, 2014

It should Brian, this little things pumps out a strong 500w with no problem. I've had mine for a few years now and it's as good now as it was new.

Is a line output converter required if im hooking this up to a factory stereo setup that has no RCA outputs? I know a speaker wire to RCA adapter would be needed. Im only adding one subwoofer

Hello and yes you do need it i have mine that way.
everardo  Jun 26, 2014

A converter is not required. This amplifier comes with an additional wire harness that you can hook up your high level output (factory speaker wires) into without a problem. And it also has an RCA output if you were to add an additional amplifier later.
alan a  Jun 26, 2014
A
No you do not need a line output converter. The required wiring comes packaged with the amp to allow you a direct connection to your factory head unit via the speaker outputs of the radio
