Our take on the Sanyo FXCD-550

Talk about multitasking — the Sanyo FXCD-550 receiver gives you both CD and cassette playback in a standard-sized receiver! You get a smooth, full-logic tape section with great playback features (like 9-track music search) to make it easier to navigate through the cassette. The CD section has 40-second skip protection for uninterrupted music.

This versatile receiver also includes an AM/FM radio tuner, so you're not limited to your own music collection. There's plenty of power (20 watts RMS/50 peak x 4) to pump out your tunes. Switch on the Bassxpander for fuller sound at low to moderate volumes — choose either bass boost/reduced treble or bass/treble boost. Two sets of preamp outputs provide convenient connection to external amps for more power.

Highlights:

  • In-dash receiver with built-in amplifier (20 watts RMS/50 peak x 4 channels)
  • CD and cassette playback in a standard-size (2" tall") receiver
  • plays CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs
  • detachable face with blue display
  • full logic controls
  • 40-second CD skip protection
  • 12 FM/6 AM presets
  • preset scan
  • automatic music search (up to 9 tracks)
  • metal tape selector
  • Bassxpander
  • front and rear preamp outputs
  • clock
  • CD frequency response 20-20,000 Hz
  • tape frequency response 50-15,000 Hz
  • CD signal-to-noise ratio 90 dB
  • tape signal-to-noise ratio 52 dB
  • FM sensitivity 15 dBf
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Features

CD and Cassette Playback: In addition to CD changer controls, this unit has a single CD and a single cassette player built-in.

40-second Anti-Shock Memory: This unit includes a 40-second memory buffer to help prevent skipping during CD playback.

D/A Converters: The FXCD-550 features twin 1-bit Digital-to-Analog converters.

Automatic Music Select System (AMSS): By detecting the blank spaces between the songs, this feature allows you to skip forward, up to 9 tracks, and backward, up to 8 tracks, while playing a cassette.

Blank Skip: This feature automatically skips blank tape sections longer than 15 seconds, stopping and playing at the next recorded section.

Metal Tape Selector: The metal tape button provides smoother sound by selecting the proper equalization for playing back metal tapes.

Repeat Play: When playing a cassette, this feature allows you to repeat the current track.

Scan Mode: This feature allows you to play the first 10 seconds of each track on a cassette.

ATP (Auto Travel Presets): The Auto Travel Preset function searches for and memorizes the 6 strongest stations in the FM or AM band in order of signal strength.

This product has worked out well for me. Actually, I did a lot of online searching for a cassette/cd player to fit into my Toyota Corolla and this was the only one available. Installation was simple. The controls took a bit of time to master, but I was surprised at how quickly I adapted. Now I want to get one for my wife as we both listen to books on cd and cassette.

I have a Toyota Matrix 2005 and this stereo replaces my factory cd/radio stereo. I didn't do the installation myself but I took it to a local installer to do it for me. Crutchfield supplied all the necessary installation equipment free so it made their job easier.

As for the stereo, it works beautifully. It plays my cassette tapes, and cd's (cdr's and normal cd's). I haven't tried any cdrw's yet. This stereo does not play mp3's but now I can use a tape adapter with my mp3 player for that. The screen is well lit and displays the time. This is a bit redundant for my car since I already have an in-dash clock.

I like all the new tape functions I get like being able to hit a few buttons and automatically fast forward to the next track. The cassette player also has an auto reverse function so I don't need to eject the tape and turn it over.

I only have two minor gripes and one is that the volume buttons are not a dial and that they are on the right side of the stereo. My other minor complaint is the size of the eject buttons and such. They are a bit small but still functional.

This radio/cd/casette player is far superior to the OEM, and Crutchfield supplied all hookups necessary for Circuit City to install.

Great little CD/Cassette/Radio in one package

I'm very pleased with the performance of this CD/Cassette/Radio in one little package. As an avid Books-on-Tape listener, I can now "read" books in either Cassette or CD format. Controls are easy to use once you get used to them, sound is great, anti-skip on CD works wonderfully on rough roads, CD remembers where you left off (an unexpected plus). Plenty of power for the casual user. Other reviews have said that this unit doesn't play MP3 - I'm not there yet, so that's not an issue for me. This unit does everything I expected and more, which is good, as this seems to be the only CD/Cassette player in single DIN size available.

Never one problem with this unit. Simple to use and has plenty of "Punch".
Three years + service. Hope Sanyo comes out with MP3 in this design.

We installed this ourselves, and the only problem we had was getting the original deck out. Everything was provided that we needed to hook up, and that went smoothly. I am on the road a lot, so I listen to books on CD and tape so that my time is more productive. The unit itself leaves a little to be desired. I don't like that you can't just scan through the stations on the radio when you're traveling. You have to keep pushing the button to find the next station and next . . .I haven't had any trouble with the CD player or cassette player, but I agree that the volume controls could be more convenient to the driver, like on the left, duh? The eject button is extremely small. I also don't like that the clock is not visible when you don't have the unit on. Any adjustments made to sound, like bass, treble and balance are better done when you are not driving, because they are a little complex. But I sure am glad to have a working deck in my Mazda Tribute again, and it was one of very few choices with both cassette and CD, so I'll give it a four out of five.

Good sound, poor quality overall

Written By Brent, Halifax, PA on Monday, November 20, 2006

This CD player was in a VW Passat I purchased. The sound coming from it is great, good bass boost and overall sound quality (which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars) - when it decides it wants to play CDs. The reviewer above was right about the error messages constantly displayed by this player. I often have to insert a CD more than three times before it will play. Some CDs will not play at all in this player. At first I thought it was only on burned CD-R cds, but it won't play all new music CDs either, and has major problems playing CDs that have any kind of copyright protection stuff on them.
I'm getting a Pioneer to put in my car .. I'm tired of fooling around trying to get this player to play CDs when all I want is just to listen to music instead of fight with it. Definitely too much $$ for the problems I've had.

Reliable (reliably BAD!)

Written By Chiawatha, Fort Worth, TX on Friday, February 08, 2008

I inadvertently purchased this exact same radio as my parents had a year prior. Had they known this was the radio I planned to purchase, they would have talked me out of it. Just like clockwork, my radio is having the exact same problems as theirs at about the same time it happened to them. First, the CD player becomes harder and harder to read the discs (it is currently taking me at least 2 tries before the CD is read without giving me an error message). Second, the cassette player randomly sticks in fast forward. I've had the radio less than 6 months and these are regular occurrences. ~~

I'm told I should expect the following next: the CD player stops working all together, the cassette player will start to eat tapes and finally the cassette player will completely stop working. ~~

This is a bad product. I bought 2 decks from different places at different times and they're both bad.
The CD's load up on the first try about 40% of the time otherwise deck just gives an error code. I have to reload the CD up to 4 times before it works. Sometimes I have to leave the deck off for a few minutes and then turn it on for it to load properly. Having a cassette and CD player in the same unit just isn't worth this price or trouble. Buy something else, I wish I would have.
