In the Sanyo ECD-T1780DV DVD player, you'll get a great centerpiece for your mobile video at a price that's hard to beat. Its motorized, 7" video screen offers touch-panel control over a variety of sources, including DVDs, CDs, and MP3 discs. Unlike many in-dash video systems, this one doesn't require a hideaway box, which makes your installation much easier. This premium model also features plenty of inputs, a high-powered internal amplifier, and lots of options for system expansion.

When you're parked, you can use the video screen to watch your favorite movies and videos. The front-panel audio/video input makes it easy for you to connect an external source, like a VCR or your video camera, and you can add still another source to the rear audio/video input. When you're on the road, use the touchscreen controls to navigate through the MP3 files and folders you've burned on CD, or enjoy excellent AM and FM reception.

While you're parked, you can watch your DVDs on the built-in video screen. If you add a backseat screen a set of wireless headphones to the audio/video output, you can engage dual-zone mode while you're driving. You can listen to one source, like the radio, up front, while the kids in back get to keep watching their videos privately — everybody gets to enjoy the ride.

No matter what you're listening to, the muscular built-in amplifier makes sure it all sounds forceful. To add even more impact to your music and movies, connect external amplifiers to the three sets of preamp outputs to drive your speakers and a subwoofer. There's also an input for an optional rear-view camera, so you can keep an eye on what's behind you — especially handy if you're towing something.

If you prefer to drive with the screen retracted, the secondary set of controls lets you stay in command of the system. A multi-function wireless remote gives backseat passengers a chance to play, too.

Touchscreen receivers allow you to breeze through menus with the tip of your finger. Most DVD receivers feature a USB input for audio from your iPod, and the ability to add an adapter that allows video to display on the screen. Some receivers even offer connections for a center speaker and a subwoofer, so you can build a full-fledged theater in your car, just like at home.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Lots of features, touch screen in a model this cheap? Totally awesome. Worth every cent and matches up to any of the more expensive models. Even has a detachable faceplate with security case. Contols? Easy to navigate. Unit has equilizer and subwoofer control and produces loud clear sound. The screen has great resolution. This is a must have item for those who want great performance at a lower price.

Great In-dash Media Source!

Written By Mac, Jacksonville, FL. on Thursday, October 06, 2005

I just purchased this unit and had it installed on tuesday. This is a great unit. All the touchscreen controls are easy to use and pretty much self explanatory. This unit is very powerful and provides quality sound with the onscreen sub control and equalizer. It actually is louder than the kenwood head unit it just replaced. The picture quality of the dvd is very good, but not the best I have seen (alpine unit). But, all in all it is an excellent media control source. You really cannot beat it for the price and features. It has better touchscreen controls and picture quality than my brother's pioneer. He was very impressed. I really would recommend this unit.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Motorized 7" Touch Panel TFT Display: The Sanyo ECD-T1780DV has a motorized 7" TFT wide screen display with touch panel controls. The screen has a resolution of 1440 x 234 and 336,960 total pixels.

Detachable Control Panel: To prevent theft, the control button section can be detached with a release key. A hard plastic control panel case is supplied for storing the detached panel.

Touch Panel Controls: This unit has touch panel controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy.

Adjustable Display Angle/Position: You can adjust the display's angle for better visibility, plus you can slide the monitor forward or backward to avoid dashboard obstructions. The display angle can be adjusted to one of 21 positions, and the forward position can be set to one of four positions. The angle and position adjustments are memorized, and the monitor will return to the same settings the next time it is opened.

Self-Contained Unit: The ECD-T1780DV contains all the components, inputs and outputs, and motorized retractable monitor in a single DIN-sized unit. There is no hideaway box.

Dimmer Feature: When the orange/white illumination wire of this unit receives power (i.e. when you turn the vehicle's lights on), the display will dim to a preset level.

Front Panel Display: In addition to the 7" touch-panel monitor, the ECD-T1780DV has a front panel display which can be used when the monitor is retracted. The display provides you with all information relative to the source in use, such as radio station frequency, source name, volume setting, or clock display.

Screen Modes: The display has 4 screen modes: Normal (for 4:3 sources), Full (for 16:9 sources), Wide and Cinema.

Picture Settings: You can choose from 4 picture settings: Standard, Dynamic, Cinema, and Custom. Depending upon the source, you can adjust the dimmer, brightness, contrast and color if the Custom setting is selected.

7-Band Graphic EQ: This unit has a built-in 7-band graphic equalizer with 4 EQ presets (Flat, Pops, Rock, and Jazz). Each band can be adjusted +/- 6dB at the following center frequencies: 62Hz, 157Hz, 396Hz, 1kHz, 2.51kHz, 6.34kHz, and 16kHz, and stored in any of the 3 custom EQ memories.

MP3/JPEG Playback: This unit can play MP3 and JPEG photo files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1 or Level 2, Juliet or Romeo formats, or on recordable DVD in UDF Bridge (combined UDF and ISO 9660) format. Each disc can have up to 256 folders (albums), and no more than 1000 total files and folders per disc.

Dual-Zone Capability: The ECD-T1780DV's dual zone capability allows rear seat passengers to enjoy a separate audio/video program on an optional rear monitor screen, while the front seat passengers enjoy a completely separate source. When the 2-Zone function is on, rear passengers can enjoy the DVD or Aux 1, 2, or 3.

Rear View Camera Compatible: You can connect a rear view camera to the unit's Aux 3 video input. When the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear, the video from the rear view camera will automatically appear on the screen. The purple/white wire in the supplied harness must be spliced into the vehicle's backup lamp circuit in order for this to occur automatically. You can also view the video from the rear view camera at any time by selecting the source in the menu.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Auxiliary Inputs: The ECD-T1780DV has three auxiliary inputs:

  • Aux 1: Aux 1 is a 3.5mm minijack audio/video input on the front panel for connecting a camcorder or portable MP3 player. Note: You must use the supplied A/V cable adapter when you connect an audio only device.
  • Aux 2: Aux 2 is an audio/video input with RCA composite video and stereo audio jacks for connecting a VCR or video game console. This input is on a 6" pigtail connected to the rear panel.
  • Aux 3: Aux 3 is a video only input with an RCA composite jack for connecting a rear view camera. This input is on a 12" pigtail.

Rear Monitor Output: One set of A/V jacks (RCA composite video/stereo audio) is provided to output audio and video to an external monitor. This output is on a 9" pigtail.

Subwoofer Output: A mono subwoofer preamp output is provided on a 10" pigtail on the rear panel. The output has a dual RCA jack, however, the audio is mono. You can manually adjust the subwoofer output in the audio menu.

Reverse Gear/Parking Brake Detection: The unit's main power harness contains a purple/white wire which should be spliced into the vehicle's backup lamp circuit to determine when the vehicle is shifted into reverse gear. When power is supplied to this wire, the video from a rear view camera (connected to the Aux 3 input) is shown on the monitor. There is also a light green wire in this harness that should be spliced into the parking brake lamp circuit. The monitor will not display video unless this wire is connected to the parking brake circuit (to the "ground" side) and the parking brake is engaged. This is a safety feature to prevent video from being visible to the driver when the vehicle is moving.

Optical Digital Output: The ECD-T1780 is equipped with a proprietary round optical digital connector, for connecting the unit to a Dolby Digital surround processor.
