Features
Product Description: This kit
allows you to install an aftermarket receiver into 1996-99 Ford Taurus/Mercury
Sable models with rotary climate controls. The oval-shaped kit has a rectangular
DIN opening for the receiver. Three circular openings below the receiver slot
accommodate the factory Fan Control switch, Vent Control switch and Temperature
Control switch. The Rear Defrost switch and indicator light are also located on
the front of the kit. Attached to the rear of the kit are several wires, some of
which plug into factory harnesses and others that need to be spliced into the
wiring of the new receiver.
Receiver Mounting Options: You
can mount the radio into the kit from the front using the radio's mounting
sleeve, or you can mount the radio into the kit from the rear by using the
supplied ISO mount brackets. In both cases, you will need to use the supplied
DIN trim ring. It is recommended that you support the rear of the receiver with
the support strap supplied with the radio to add to the installation's
structural integrity.
Modifications: For Ford
Taurus/Mercury Sable models with floor consoles, a minor modification to the
factory trim panel may be necessary. A small corner of the factory trim may need
to be filed or cut in order for the kit to fit the opening. The modified area
will not be visible after the receiver has been installed, and should not affect
the re-installation of the factory radio.
Kit Wiring: Attached to the
back of the kit are two sets of wires: a defroster harness (green plug) and a
radio power harness (white plug). These plug into the vehicle harnesses, either
directly (1996-97 models) or with the supplied FD22 adapter harness (1998-99
models). Four 6" wires coming
out of the radio power harness (white plug) need to be spliced to the new
receiver's wiring harness using the following color codes:
- Yellow: 12 Volts Constant
Power
- Red: 12 Volts Switched Power
- Orange: Illumination (dash
lights)
- Black: Chassis Ground
Speaker Wiring Adapter/Amplifier
Bypass: Supplied with the kit is a 17-1/2' Speaker Wiring adapter harness
that carries the output signal from the new receiver to the factory speaker
harness, located in the rear of the vehicle. The bare ends of this harness need
to be spliced to the speaker output wires of the new receiver. The other end
contains the 14-pin Speaker Input Plug which connects to the factory speaker
harness after it has been disconnected from the amplifier output. (Note: The
factory amplifier is located in the rear of the vehicle and the speaker wiring
harness, along with the supplied antenna extension cable, need to be routed from
the radio location to the rear of the vehicle.) The factory amplifier is
bypassed and the speakers are powered by the new receiver. The color codes for
the Speaker Wiring Adapter are:
- White: Left Front Speaker
Positive
- White/Black: Left Front
Speaker Negative
- Green: Left Rear Speaker
Positive
- Green/Black: Left Rear
Speaker Negative
- Gray: Right Front Speaker
Positive
- Gray/Black: Right Front
Speaker Negative
- Violet: Right Rear Speaker
Positive
- Violet/Black: Right Rear
Speaker Negative
Note On Receiver Wiring: The
wire colors of the new receiver may, or may not, match the wire colors of the
adapter. You will need to match the adapter and receiver wires by function,
disregarding color.

Correction
Wire Color Codes: The manual
(Page 4) lists the factory color codes of the Black 14-pin Speaker Input plug
incorrectly. The correct functions for each wire are printed on the actual
wires on the supplied 17-1/2' speaker wiring harness, and match the color code list above.
