Scosche

Our take on the Ford/Mercury Factory Stereo Integration Package

Until now, if you wanted to replace the factory radio in your 1996-99 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable, you were out of luck. The Ford-built "radio" is an oval control panel that houses climate controls along with the radio tuning and cassette mechanisms. The unusual shape and inclusion of temperature controls prohibited any aftermarket receivers from working in this location. You were stuck with just the cassette deck unless you shelled out $500 to $600 for the CD changer option from the dealer.

Now, if your Taurus or Sable has mechanical climate controls, you can upgrade to an in-dash CD player or a better cassette deck, thanks to this innovative FD1340 integration adapter from Scosche. It fits the oval opening in the Taurus or Sable perfectly. Plus, it includes a series of plugs to operate the climate controls. You transfer the switches and knobs from the factory oval control panel into the new panel.

Important Note: When installing an aftermarket radio, you will need to run the provided antenna extension cable and speaker extension harness from the Ford rear tuner/amp unit to your new receiver.

Features

Product Description: This kit allows you to install an aftermarket receiver into 1996-99 Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable models with rotary climate controls. The oval-shaped kit has a rectangular DIN opening for the receiver. Three circular openings below the receiver slot accommodate the factory Fan Control switch, Vent Control switch and Temperature Control switch. The Rear Defrost switch and indicator light are also located on the front of the kit. Attached to the rear of the kit are several wires, some of which plug into factory harnesses and others that need to be spliced into the wiring of the new receiver.

Receiver Mounting Options: You can mount the radio into the kit from the front using the radio's mounting sleeve, or you can mount the radio into the kit from the rear by using the supplied ISO mount brackets. In both cases, you will need to use the supplied DIN trim ring. It is recommended that you support the rear of the receiver with the support strap supplied with the radio to add to the installation's structural integrity.

Modifications: For Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable models with floor consoles, a minor modification to the factory trim panel may be necessary. A small corner of the factory trim may need to be filed or cut in order for the kit to fit the opening. The modified area will not be visible after the receiver has been installed, and should not affect the re-installation of the factory radio.

Kit Wiring: Attached to the back of the kit are two sets of wires: a defroster harness (green plug) and a radio power harness (white plug). These plug into the vehicle harnesses, either directly (1996-97 models) or with the supplied FD22 adapter harness (1998-99 models). Four 6" wires coming out of the radio power harness (white plug) need to be spliced to the new receiver's wiring harness using the following color codes:

  • Yellow: 12 Volts Constant Power
  • Red: 12 Volts Switched Power
  • Orange: Illumination (dash lights)
  • Black: Chassis Ground

Speaker Wiring Adapter/Amplifier Bypass: Supplied with the kit is a 17-1/2' Speaker Wiring adapter harness that carries the output signal from the new receiver to the factory speaker harness, located in the rear of the vehicle. The bare ends of this harness need to be spliced to the speaker output wires of the new receiver. The other end contains the 14-pin Speaker Input Plug which connects to the factory speaker harness after it has been disconnected from the amplifier output. (Note: The factory amplifier is located in the rear of the vehicle and the speaker wiring harness, along with the supplied antenna extension cable, need to be routed from the radio location to the rear of the vehicle.) The factory amplifier is bypassed and the speakers are powered by the new receiver. The color codes for the Speaker Wiring Adapter are:

  • White: Left Front Speaker Positive
  • White/Black: Left Front Speaker Negative
  • Green: Left Rear Speaker Positive
  • Green/Black: Left Rear Speaker Negative
  • Gray: Right Front Speaker Positive
  • Gray/Black: Right Front Speaker Negative
  • Violet: Right Rear Speaker Positive
  • Violet/Black: Right Rear Speaker Negative

Note On Receiver Wiring: The wire colors of the new receiver may, or may not, match the wire colors of the adapter. You will need to match the adapter and receiver wires by function, disregarding color.

Manual Correction

Wire Color Codes: The manual (Page 4) lists the factory color codes of the Black 14-pin Speaker Input plug incorrectly. The correct functions for each wire are printed on the actual wires on the supplied 17-1/2' speaker wiring harness, and match the color code list above.

Ford/Mercury Factory Stereo Integration Package

Written By Shawn E, Anoka, MN on Sunday, August 07, 2011

All in all it seems to be a good product, doesn't seem "cheap". The outside edge of the main unit has a felt lining so when you're on a bouncy road you don't have a plastic to plastic rubbing squeak. Nice wires and connecters HOWEVER it was missing the "7" FD22 Wiring adapter harness" that is required for my 1998 Ford Taurus so make sure when you get it check to see if it's in the package, in the image of the product it's the harness to the left of the main unit with 1 big black connecter with 1 small black and 1 small white connecters on the other end.

The Scosche directions that come with the unit are "ok", they could have a little more and clearer info. Crutchfield also sends their own set of installation instructions that are pretty nice but still lacks a little info.

Scosche comes through again

Written By John L, Arizona on Thursday, April 21, 2011

I used the Taurus adapter kit in my niece's car. It took a few minutes to figure it
out, but all of the parts were expertly engineered and fit perfectly. Even with
mad fabricating skills, I could never come close to the fitment and quality of this
kit, especially for the price.
