Great Dash Kit

Written by: jarodc from Waterloo, IL on July 13, 2016

1994 GMC Sierra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This GMC Dash Kit is a perfect fit in my 1994 K1500. My old center dash trim piece was loose fitting, and I was afraid that this one would snap into place with the same fit. But it fits great, and has not squeaking or creaking like the old one did. The color is nearly perfect, and probably actually is right on, except my dash has likely faded over time. The vents snapped into place with a tight (but not too tight) smooth pivoting fit. The retainer clips for the vents were hard to re-install, but that's the fault of the clips and not the dash kit. Oh, and the new head unit fit perfectly into the opening. I couldn't have asked for a better kit.

Pros: Color matched well. Stock vents fit in nicely. Fits better than the stock one that it replaced. Radio installed perfectly into kit.

Cons: None.

Perfect fit for my 1990 C1500 with an aftermarket radio. Garnet Red matched the interior perfectly and you can't tell it didn't come original to the truck.

Pros: Perfect fit and color match. Easy install.

Cons: Somewhat difficult to remove vents and metal clips from original piece. Would be great if this item came with new metal clips.

Needed part when installing an after market stereo, the part is well finished, the color matches the interior perfectly. When you order one, take the time to call customer service and ask them for the color you need for your interior, sometimes it's hard to find online! Also, if you do not reinstall the springs from your old unit, the a/c vents will be loose.

Pros: Well finished, good color matching, easy to install.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 94" Chevy K1500 interior is a maroon and red with my dash being maroon. The Scosche trim plate color was a dark red (Garnet Red) so it was close but not maroon... It doesn't look bad at all maybe over time it will get darker. (It does match the red in my seats so it not the elephant in the room lol) The air outlet vents are a very tight fit. I'll will never get them out of this trim plate again without breaking the trim plate or worst the vents. probably will have to cut the center like the factory one is. (good news is their is no slop in the vents) fit in the dash and stereo perfect.. If I had to buy it again.... I WOULD

Pros: fit in the dash perfect

Cons: Never getting the vents out again without cutting the center peg holes out of the trim plate and in my case the color but it's close enough.

Installed this in an 25 year old truck and was concerned about color matching. The color matches up pretty good even with the surrounding dash being slightly faded. Installation instructions were a bit vague, but doesn't take a genius to look at the old parts and figure it out. Recommended

Great dash kit! It matched the original color (grey) and is in better shape than the original. I like that the vents fit in better now and that the radio looks like it was supposed to go in there. I bet you could almost use a full size radio with it, just about. Fit in better than the original and worked as designed. No issues.

Pros: Fit The color matching (Charcoal/Grey) Looks better than factory

The instructions are very easy to follow.

Pros: Easy install.

Cons: Color is off and it does not allow a deep enough cavity for modern decks. So after your install the deck sticks out 1/2" too far.only remedy is to use a passive deck that is shorter, or modify the heater box.

It fits extremely well, and it itself was easy to install. Putting the vents in was a little hard, but this wasn't at fault. It didn't come with the lower metal clips, but those should be on your car already. The old ones fit perfectly. The color is a little off, but what can I expect I am buying something new, to match something old and faded. So I cannot complain about it. It still looks great! They only issue I had was in the very back of where the old tape deck/equalizer went there was a truss frame helping the old tape deck. You can remove that, two 7mm bolts. Installed in a 89 pickup K series.

This dash kit replaced brother in laws original in 92 Chevy pickup; color was pretty close to original. Good fit and look, but the install of factory vents with clips were cumbersome and vent would not rotate from clip fitting snug. Overall, good repalcement.

Pros: Good color match to original (pretty close to), good fit.

Cons: Installing a/c vents and clips were a pain and not able to move up or down; just the horizontal would work.

1993 Chevrolet C Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had called crutchfield prior to ordering this part that was included in the setup I needed for my stereo installation. I had asked specifically about the "clips" that came with it for mounting purposes to secure this installation piece into my truck. I was told that it did have the clips and everything I needed for installation was there. When I recieved the package the important clips I needed, the gold colored ones that pop into the holes of my vehicle did not come with this piece. I had ended up going to my local salvage yard and finding some clips that would help me finish my installation. Also keep in mind when ordering these replacement dash parts especially for older vehicles there is going to be paint fade and these are freshly painted, so there is going to be a stark contrast in color.

Pros: Fits my radio just fine.

Cons: Security clips non-existent. Non-matching paint color.

Crutchfield response on August 28, 2012 The advisor on this order was incorrect. The OEM clips are not included with this item. The clips must be removed from the original panel for installation. In addition, it is certainly possible that color match could be off due to sun fading.

1993 Chevrolet C Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This worked fairly well. the instructions could have gone one step further in explaining where to reroute the wires in the dash, but it didn't take long to figure out. The A/C vents are a little loose in the new trim piece. Not unbearable, but it would be nice if they were retained better. Everything else was awesome. It clicked right in, under the dash has more room without that dang stock amp/radio thing... the color matched pretty well even though mine is pretty sun faded.

Pros: Looks nice. Fairly easy install.

Cons: A/C vents are a little wiggly. As someone stated, it would be cool if the vents came with it so they fit correctly.

Another Great Product

1990 GMC K Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Another great product that GM came up with. I am sure several years after they created these vehicles, their factory tape players were starting to die out, so they had to create something for those consumers that wanted an after market product. This item fit perfectly and was easy to install. The only thing we had some issues with was inserting the old vents from the piece we took out. It gave us a little bit of trouble, but eventually went in. It would be a little better if they sold it WITH the vent pieces too. Just an idea, GM.

Pros: Simple install, matches perfectly

Cons: Inserting old vents a little difficult

There is not much to this product. It fits. The color matches reasonably well.

Pros: The best adapter available. The others I found had multiple pieces and only came in black.

Cons: It's kind of ugly but that's really GM's fault because of the way the deck has to fit. $5 more than the universal mentioned in "pros".

This was essential to installing the radio. It almost fit the dash and the radio perfectly. I had to really push on the radio to get it to lock into the grille because there was an air duct or something behind it that tended to keep the radio from going all the way in. Another 1/8 inch and it would have been perfect. My compliments to the Crutchfield staff for the excellent removal and installation pages. They were complete and well illustrated. This also applies to the wiring harness pages.

After modifying the factory panel to fit my aftermarket radio, having it stick out that extra 3/4 inch, and look, shall we say, less than professional, the Crutchfield panel is a blessing. Easy fit, easy install, and factory professional look.

Just wanted to say this and the other parts that Crutchfield provided free for my JVC radio purchase were awesome. The master sheets worked out fine. the whole project took 2 1/2 hours to remove and install. Factory harness was no problem hooking up to the new radio. The master sheet showed me exactly where the factory amp was and then hooking up to the stereo was a breeze. It helps to have some radio experience but im far from pro. Not too hard for the novice ,weekend radio warrior. Thanks Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This piece fits fine (not quite as good as the OEM piece), and matched up good enough. My truck is a 90 so I didnt expect it to be an exact match considering all the years the dash has had to fade. My complaint is, if they are going to go through the trouble of making the 1 din pocket deeper than stock, why not actually make it deep enough for the receiver to fit without having to stuff it in there?

Looks good. Fits good. Color matches nicely. Takes a little time and patience transfering the heater vents and clips, but the dash holder clips transfer very easy. Once assembled everything fits nice and tight, looks factory.

Since a normal DIN stereo doesn't fit in my truck, the kit they give you includes a new dash section for where the old cassette player was and this works great. The color match is pretty decent (not perfect) and is as close a match as various pieces of trim within the truck itself.

Fit and finish was awesome! Color matched my burgandy/dark red interior better than the original Chevy piece! I dont think you could color match a black one for cheaper than one if these for the extra $10.

I installed this on a 1990 Chevy K1500, and the only thing I had trouble with during installation was the vents. They fit really tightly which made getting the metal clips in really hard.. but I eventually got it. Also had a little trouble keeping the wiring harness from bunching up behind the deck and preventing it from going all the way in.. but that's not really a problem with this kit. Overall I'd say 5/5

The fit and finish is very good. It has clean lines and looks original. Could be easier if the reciever pocket was included. Or even listed.

Works well, color slightly off (not bad for 14 years of fade)

This unit replaced an old unit I'd purchased at a local stereo shop several years ago (~$25). My dash is garnet/burgundy and the old unit was definitely not the same color, being more bright red. I lived with it, I needed the piece. This one came with my new Crutchfield radio purchase (free of charge!) and looks a lot better than the old one. It's closer in color, but is not an exact match. It's a little shinier, but what would one expect after 14 years of sun punishment to my dash. Compared to the old one, I'm very pleased. It came free (which is nice) and looks more like me dash.

GM In-dash Receiver Kit for 1991 GMC Sierra

1991 GMC Sierra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything I needed was included. Installation took about 4 hours. Would have taken less time if I had known about the connector junction box that the factory wiring was plug into. It took awhile to trace the wiring and to make sure I wasn't pulling out and destroying valuable wiring. Once I discovered that the factory plugs did plug into the wiring harness, everything was fine. However, in this 1991 GMC Sierra, there is little room to work your hands inside and under the dash. The wiring harness could be longer to make it easier to feed and connect the connector pins. It's almost too short. I had to take the receiver deck out a couple of times to make the connections of the unit properly. The instructions were good, except for the lack of explanation of the wiring connections. The wiring from the factory radio (that also attached to the cassette player in the middle of the dash) did not connect directly into the harness. You have to trace them back to junction box, disconnect from the junction box and plug those ends into the supplied wiring harness. I'm a 1,2,3,4 follower of directions and this step that was left out threw me a curve. However, I figured it out eventually. I was just being careful not to unplug something that I shouldn't.THE CD HOLDER IS TERRIBLE-THEY FALL OUT CONSTANTLY! Also, for this particular vehicle, the instructions tell you to remove 4 screws to remove the factory radio. What they don't say is that one of the screws is behind the face of the radio and it's almost impossible to get ouy. You only figure that out after you have removed 3 screws and you are looking for the 4th. So, beware of the 4th screw.

Works Pretty good.

Written by: Herb from Ft. Sill, OK on January 25, 2006

This kit works pretty good. The only problem I had is that the original dash peice, that this kit replaces, is a lighter shade of gray. But My truck had a two tone set up for the dash and the second tone matched perfect. Unless you had a really sharp eye and knew chevy truck interiors well you would never know that this peice wasn't factory. And in any case this kit still looks good in the dash. I highly recommend this product to anyone who is replacing there factory stereo with a DIN style stereo.

This piece is necessary if you're going to instal a DIN sized headunit in the GM trucks. It replaces the panel where the tape deck or EQ went. On the one I purchased, the fit was just fine. It removes easilly, and functions great. However, the color was not even close. At first I thought that maybe the color on my dash had faded over time, and originally looked like the color of this piece. However, looking at the back side of the panel I removed (which had never seen sunlight), it matched the rest of the dash perfectly. The piece I purchased is a lot more red than the plastic on my dash.

In the end, I went with a black color of this piece, and painted the center strip (from cluster to the end of the glovebox) to match, leaving the top and bottom of the dash in the original color. This looks normal enough that you may even think it came from the factory that way.

In the end, I only give this 1 star, because it looks horrible, even if it does technically function.

1 question already asked

On my truck it barely fit my new radio, I still don't have the wires aligned in back for a proper fit, and i even cut out some metal in the back of the dash to make it work. However, it is the only one available, and is the same one everyone in the industry has been using since the 90's. You just got to make it work my friend. Also, the color is probably not an exact match because your truck color is now sun faded... Overall, it IS the right one, you just have to wrap your head around the fact that it will probably take a little elbow grease and ingenuity to make it perfect. [ brendan Aug 30, 2015 ]
Thats right about as much as you'll get from it. [ MICHAEL Aug 30, 2015 ]
It comes out 1.5 - 2 inches, so you should be good. [ ROBERT L Aug 30, 2015 ]
If by extension you mean distance from original dash to outside edge, it is roughly 11/16 of an inch. Hope I understood you correctly. Good luck. [ Doyle Aug 30, 2015 ]
