Our take on the Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter

by Tim Sprinkle
Scosche

Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter

So you're trying to connect an amplifier without speaker-level inputs to a car stereo that doesn't have preamp outputs? It can be done, but you'll need a line output converter to make it happen. The SLC4 from Scosche can handle up to four speaker-level inputs and four RCA outputs — enough for a 4-channel amp or a multi-amp setup.

Connect the speaker leads from your car stereo to the SLC4. It reduces the incoming speaker-level signals so that outgoing signals are compatible with the preamp inputs on your amplifier. You will then need to use two RCA patch cords (not included) to make the connections to your amp.

The SLC4 features adjustable gain settings on each channel, and it's compatible with any car stereo. Warranty: 90 days.

Features

Overview: This is a versatile adapter that allows for multiple applications. If your receiver doesn't have preamp outputs and you want to connect it to an amp that doesn't have speaker level inputs, this adapter can be used to convert you receiver's speaker level outputs into preamp outputs. With this adapter, you can hook either a 2-channel or 4-channel amplifier to this adapter, and not lose fader control. This adapter also allows you to add an aftermarket receiver to either a common ground audio system in your vehicle, or an audio system that has factory amplifiers (like many of the Premium, JBL, and Bose audio systems). There are gain controls for both the line outputs and the factory amp inputs. Which gain controls you use depends on your application. Note: There is a plastic screwdriver that is physically attached to the adapter, and must be broken off to use. It is used to adjust gain controls and screw down the speaker terminals.

Speaker-Level-to-Line Level Conversion: The adapter can convert car stereo speaker outputs to RCA outputs so an external 2 or 4 channel amplifier can be added to a car audio system. There are line output controls that allow you to adjust the output level going into your amplifier(s). The adapter can handle up to 80 watts of speaker level input.

Interface with Factory Amplified Systems: This adapter allows the matching and installation of an aftermarket receiver with most factory amplified systems like the Premium/JBL/Bose systems.

Subwoofer Application: The adapter will allow for the integration of a subwoofer or subwoofers to nearly any audio system. There are line output controls that you can use to adjust the output level going into your amplifier(s).

Common Ground Audio Systems: With this adapter, you can add an aftermarket receiver to a common ground system in your vehicle without having to run new speaker wires. There are factory amp gain controls that you can use to adjust the input levels.

Common Ground/Factory Amp/Line Out Switch: Depending on how you are using the adapter will depend on what position the switch will be in. If you are adding a new receiver to a common ground system, then the switch is put into the "Common Ground" position. If you are adding the receiver to a factory system that uses Premium, JBL, and or Bose, then the switch is put into the Factory Amp position. You can also add an external amp to a receiver that does not have line outputs; in this case the switch will be in the "Line Out" position. There are factory amp gain controls that you can use to adjust the input levels.

the product works fine, this is the first time that I have issues installing a stereo on a car, there is no room in the car to install this without modification and the instructions were not accurate at all,
Pros:
sounds good
Cons:
not for just anybody to install you have to have some experience you need to take lots of parts out to get to it.

Meh...

Written By mBrane, US on Saturday, June 28, 2014

So, Crutchfield indicated that this was mandatory for the pairing of my new JVC KWHDR81BT CD Receiver with my 2008 Kia Sorento. No. Not accurate at all. Here's the trick; if you tune the SLC-4 using Bluetooth as the source, the output is louder and you'll leave the output pots cranked down a bit from max. Then, after wrestling the SLC-4 into position, mounting my head unit, and buttoning up all the trim, I was *underwhelmed* when I heard an FM source. I could max out the head unit without distorting the sound!

It infuriated me that I was "leaving something on the table," so off cam the trim, out came the unit, and out cam the SLC-4 for more tuning. I ended up maxing out the SLC-4, which is the same as not even having it in line at all!

So, now I have an extra piece of gear in my audio system waiting to fail, while also creating higher-resistance connections, because I would have connected directly and used solder instead. I just *love* knowing that there are 16 screws holding in the wiring in the SLC-4, any of which could work its way loose at any time. So, I've got *that* going for me!
Pros:
- flexible support modes
Cons:
- pots are recessed and require a screwdriver (forget that plastic simulation of a screwdriver that they attach to the unit for your convenience. Worthless. Use your own.). - pots should have long plastic caps that can be twisted with your fingers. Geesh! - too big!
Crutchfield response on Tuesday, July 08, 2014
Our Tech Support team reached out to the customer to troubleshoot the situation. If it turns out that the SLC4 is not needed, the customer can return it for a full refund.

Line Converter

Written By Frank C., Bothell, WA on Friday, May 23, 2014

My 2003 Miata has a Bose Amp and speakers installed at the factory however the inputs to that amp are wired through a wiring plug rather than using RCA inputs. This device allows your aftermarket stereo to use factory amplifier systems without being overdriven. Without this device I would have had to run all new speaker line to bypass the amp. The factory Bose amp puts out more power than the aftermarket head unit by itself, so it would have been ludicrous not to use it.
Pros:
Easy connection screw terminals, and simple to set up.
Cons:
Just one more thing to tuck into cramped dash space

Works, but can be a pain to install

Written By PD, Denver, CO on Tuesday, May 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing worked as promised, but not without some hassle. Splicing it in between the new stereo and the wiring harness was a bit of a pain, and then it was really challenging to get it into the dash behind the stereo. Seems like for what it is it could be more compact. Instructions on setting the gain levels were pretty cryptic. Seems to be adjusted OK but perhaps it could be better? Will never know.
Pros:
Works
Cons:
Bulky; instructions very cryptic

Does what it is supposed to do

Written By Adam, Louisville, CO on Sunday, April 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used it to connect to my factory Bose amp and seems to work fine. I had a little bit of distortion at first but then turned down the adjustment screws and disconnected the ground wire it comes with and much improved sound. Like most reviewers have stated it does appear a little cheap and I just hope it keeps working. Very hard to see adjustment screws and I was constantly worried about getting enough grip on the speaker wires w/out stripping out the tiny screws. Just have patience and it should work fine. I will keep my fingers crossed as to longevity. Overall, Crutchfield Tech Support was awesome quickly helped me find what I needed to do from the confusing manual.
Pros:
Works
Cons:
Seems kind of cheap (longevity?)

Not impressed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We were having major issues getting a Kenwood Head Unit to work in an 06 Acura RSX that at one point had a Bose system in it, still had the factory Bose amp and Sub. Then the head was replaced with an older Alpine head unit, which work great with the factory Bose Amp and Factor speakers and sub, but the head unit was out dated. I did direct swap out but it did not work, we had power, no sound. We called and Crutchfield recommended this unit. It worked great for about 15 minutes. Then all we had was bass. Then it died. Ended up pulling all our own wires and bypassing the factory amp and installing a Kenwood amp for both front and rear speakers and replacing the sub with a Infinity 12".
Pros:
Easy instructions
Cons:
The screws are very cheap and super small heads. It only worked for a little while and then died. Bulky, hard to mount behind head unit.

This device made my system nice and clean. I put this device right by my head unit and then ran the wiring back to my 4 channel amp. It made the signal strength great for my system. My amp does not have to work as hard because it is pushing the signal to my amp.

So easy a first-grader can do it

Written By Nate, San Diego, CA on Monday, October 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm new to car audio, and when I realized I'd need a Scosche adapter I was worried that I was in over my head. After opening the box my fears evaporated because it could not have been simpler. In fact, since all that was required was color-matching I let my 6 year-old daughter try her hand at some "Daddy work" and she loved it. I stripped the wires going in and she handled the rest. Sound quality was fine and everything worked great.
Pros:
Easy to use and handle
Cons:
It was bulky getting everything back into the console but if you want an easy fit you should make a system that doesn't require an adapter.

Perfect Solution

Written By Al the Bassman, Westwood, NJ on Wednesday, July 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was the perfect solution. I had added a Sound Ordinance under seat subwoofer to my Subaru & was having issues getting it balanced to my factory stereo. Due to the low voltage output from the factory head I was forced to connect the speaker outputs to the line-in on the subwoofer. This caused the subwoofer's remote level control not to work correctly - too little bass or way too much, no happy medium. I suspected I needed to attenuate the factory head's output. So a call to Crutchfield's tech help & the tech recommended the Scosche SLC4. This unit would enable me adjust the heads output level so the subwoofer's remote level control would allow a full range of adjustment to get the bass level just right. Installation was easy; I used Velcro to fasten it under the seat on the carpet adjacent to the subwoofer. I did have to tweak the controls on the SLC4 & subwoofer to achieve the perfect balance to enable the subwoofer's remote level control to have a full range of usable adjustment. So everything is now perfect & I can even add or subtract bass on individual songs to my taste. Just one word of advice don't mount the SLC4 to the subwoofer enclosure as its internal circuit board is a bit loose & will rattle noisily with the music. Other than that it is a great solution & product for a reasonable price.
Pros:
easy to install, works great, & price is reasonable
Cons:
none

Great little device for addressing some knotty issues

Written By Old Car Guy, Texas on Friday, October 05, 2012

Being a vintage/classic car collector I ran into a bad problem in attempting to install a modern radio in a 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Car and this little guy solved the problem. For anyone having a Ford product of the 1970's era, Ford chose to use a common ground connection at the factory radio for all speakers. New radios cannot be installed with such a grounding scheme which will very quickly cause the amplifier section to overheat and fry. It gets hot enough before failure to be a fire hazard at worst or would melt a CD at best. Instructions that come with the device are pretty simple and straight forward. Finding a place for it in the dash may be a bit of a challenge but not impossible. Basically if you are needing to do an installation as the one I did this is the only game in town. Just make sure you have any modern radio grounded per that radio's installation instructions. No exceptions or reach arounds.
Pros:
Get's the job done!
Cons:
Size can make it difficult to find a good place to secure it.

The SCOSHE Line convertor Works as stated. Hookup was easy and the staff at Cructhfield, Helpful as always. The biggest negative with this box is the plastic case it is housed in and really has no way to mount it. You basically have to Zip tie it where you want it.But It works great. If you have a stereo with speaker wire outputs and want to run them in an Amp via RCA jacks, this box is a must and reasonably priced. Thanks Crutchfield.

Waste of money

Written By CraigE, Portland, OR on Monday, September 20, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is just what my review states... a waste of money. First of all it didn't work; or I guess I should say it functioned, barely. I tried to use it to tap into my rear factory speakers in my 2008 Legacy. It sent a signal to my amp but it was very weak even with the gain all the way up, there was very little volume and what volume it did have, sounded terribly muddled. A direct connection from my MP3 player to my amp proved my amp and sub to be operating just fine but this little piece of junk just didn't work, despite my troubleshooting it Even a call to Cruthfield tech support yielded no results. I gave up and just ordered an amp with speaker-level inputs and voila! it worked like a champ.

Not to mention it's not working properly or weak gain, (maybe I got a defective one but it's too late to return it now) but this item feel incredibly cheap. The plastic is very fragile. It's not durable. It fell off my speaker box (about 14 inches tall) on to our pergo floor and it busted in two! What kind of cheap nonsense is that? There are no mounting options for this either, leaving someone who wants a clean install to make it jimmy'd with zip ties or something else.

I should have listened to the negative reviews of this product, instead of believing the ones that said it worked.

Didn't get it to work in my 2008.5 VW GTI. So I gave up and gave in and just bought a
new headunit anyways with the outputs I need. Could have been easily been user
error... buuuut I wouldn't bet on it.
It feels ok enough, I didn't expect much.

Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter

Written By Anonymous, Columbus, OH on Monday, April 19, 2010

Since the 2005 vibe w/ moon and tunes package has an OEM amplifier, this product was suggested on another forum to decrease background noise. Seems to be working great so far. I wish there was more guidance as far as what to do with the black ground wire though. I've heard on other forums you can just tape it off, or ground it. I splice it into the HU ground/wire harness ground and that seemed to work ok. My complaint with this device is that the included screwdriver is terrible. Use your own screwdriver if you have one. Also, they say to be very careful not to overtighten. Well after the wires falling out about 300 times, i said "screw it" and tightened them down pretty good. They seem to be staying put now. Just takes a few times to get the feel of how hard you need to tighten. Give the wires a little tug, if they fall out, tighten harder.

Crutchfield should offer a better LOC

Written By David, OR on Monday, January 25, 2010

I grabbed one of these in a pinch. It does the job and is inexpensive, but it's also cheap. Cheaply made, cheap feel, not very confidence inspiring. When connecting wires to the inputs the tiny screws don't give enough bite and you feel like you're going to break them before you get a solid connection. Gain control dials are also fragile feeling and others have commented on how easy they are to break.
There are other, better options on the market that Cruchfield should consider.

Great Product

Written By BumpinResponsibly, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, December 08, 2009

I put this in my 2005 Ford Taurus because getting a head unit and a Dash Kit is very pricey for my model. I worked with a professional mechanic installing it. What we did was tap into the rear speakers so I could run a subwoofer amp. It works great but the only thing is you miss out on having more control over your amp than you would have if you got a new head unit. But if your looking for something that gets the job done right, get this LOC. After having this for a long time, I finally decided to just get money and get a new head unit and dash kit. Great sound quality. Good Price. Easy to install. Get this product.

Good unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to put in my 08 cobalt sedan. It was an easy install and it works fine. The only problem I have is that the speaker I tapped into lost alot of power and sounds pretty bad. In using it to power a 600 watt rms amp. The main problem I have is that my sub stops playing when I turnmy headunit up past 3/4 volume. But overall good unit.

bought this for my honda accord. does exactly what it is suppose to. be sure to wire everything correctly, i accidentally switched the + and - speakers leads when wiring it and it killed the sound quality. only problem i had with it was getting the wires to stay in the connector pins. it was a real pain but i managed to get it work. keep up the good work crutchfield!

I bought a slightly more expensive converter and it stunk. After much toiling with a Rockford Converter I said "forget it" and picked this up. I only have one set of speaker wires soooo I spliced them by adding 2 wires to 1 and made 2 positives and 2 negatives plugged the positives into A5 + A7 and the 2 negatives into A6 + A8 works like a charm. Now I have fully controllable left and right outputs and no feedback. SCOSCHE makes great wiring kits as well SUPERIOR QUALITY! GREAT PRICE!

This piece comes in handy.i didnt want to remove my factory receiver because it had cd/cassette,plus steering wheel controls.Installation of this is simple as long as you keep track of your wires. i just used some easy connects and tied into the factory wires. The only problem i had was the input wires didnt want to stay in.I had it mounted and hid away but had to take it back out and remount 3 or 4 times because a wire kept coming loose.its worth the price.

Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter

Written By John, Mechanicsville, VA on Sunday, March 15, 2009

Bought this unit to add a subwoofer to my wife's 07 WRX wagon. Wanted to retain the factory head unit to keep cost down (and retain SIRIUS tuner). Installation wasn't too tough. First time using insulation displacement connectors...since the wagon doesn't have rear dash speakers that would have made for an easy location to tap in to. Instead I found the speaker wiring legend on a Subaru forum and tapped into the speaker wires that connect to the head unit. Mounted this unit in the glove box with double stick tape - eliminated the no mounting hole problem. Overall, good product.

Purchased this unit to install an amp and sub in my Mazda 6 w/ Bose system. Worked great, I simply removed the factory amp from the factory sub and cut the terminals that connect directly to the speaker then installed a couple of piggy back terminals, effectivly tapping into the stock sub signal after the stock amp. I ran leads over to the LOC, since its a mono signal you also need to jumper the + and - together. Worked no problem

It's okay but be careful

Written By Gary, Southern California on Friday, January 02, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this a while back to hook up a sub-woofer to my existing system. I wanted to hook an amp and sub-woofer to my factory head unit in the trunk (to the speaker level outputs from the Bose system amp that is in the trunk.) This unit didn't work for me even though I verified it was hooked up properly to the wires going to the speakers. I verified all was well but, in the end, it took buying a different company's speaker to line level box and it worked great. It's too late to return this to Crutchfield but wanted all to know of my experience. The other issue is be VERY careful with the adjustment screws. I used a very small screwdriver and was very careful but after turning the screws back and forth a few times, the screw stopped stopping at the "full on" stop but instead would turn round and round. Ugh...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not what I intended to recieve when I ordered. When hooking up to a factory deck you need to know and be able to identify all factory wiring for the speakers, and you will have to rewire all factory speakers unless you tap into the wires and run this as an auxillary. I may be way off of mark here but it seemed a little more complicated to me than the average installer would want to tackle. I run a install shop for electronics and do not intend on using this product in the future. I purchased this to enable me to install a amp and subs to a factory stereo so the owner could retain his factory 6 disc shuttle. I would recommend for the novice installer to locate the four wire converter. All you have to do to install these is locate your rear speaker wires and tap into them and you end up with 2 rca outputs for your bass amp. Product does work as described with no problems. Just more complicated than needed for my application.

Bullseye

Written By Marc, Alpharetta, GA on Monday, October 06, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Reviews are the only way for consumers to really understand how something is going to work for them. Most of what is written by the vendor has to be taken with a grain of salt. I've got to comment on this because, it did exactly what I needed and I was almost ready to spend hundreds on an aftermarket amp.

Problem: Getting aftermarket head units to play nicely with 98' E320 stock Bose amplifier. Line out from aftermarket HU to Bose amp and you get a nasty thump when source is changed or volume turned to zero. I thought it was a flaw in the Alpine receiver. On to a new Pioneer DEH-P5000UB for bluetooth purposes (awesome!). I found the same problems. Also tried speaker out to factory amp but that option came with other issues like 'one click, too loud' and hissing on soft tracks. The Scosche SLC4 knocked these problems square out. Easy to connect. Adjustments were puzzeling. I just set all channels equal at half mark and set the mode switch to what sounded best. It delivered what Bose was looking for. 5 clicks into the volume and the sound increases nicely and has a solid full range as I continue to increase the knob. No clicks, pops or hissing! Only negative things to report are the cheap screw I/O connections and the mode switch needs to be wiggled for all channels to connect. BTW If anyone from Alpine product is reading, after 3 Alpine head units over the years, I'm back in the Pioneer fan club. Their head units for the money have won me over!

Scosche makes better power cables.....

Written By micah, Memphis TN on Friday, August 29, 2008

This product is too complicated to install for its quality and is somewhat tedious. The plastic is flimsy but, unfortunately its all I could find at the time of my last install. I am looking to install an MTX Thunder series amp to a factory head unit and then add the Polk EX series sub I just cant part with. (Polk got that series woofer Spot On) I was hoping to find something better but, so far no luck. I suppose if I cannot find something better I will need to return to this. Or perhaps go without..................the gain adjustment is far to sensitive. I would not call this item user friendly in any sense though it does work. If I cannot find something better I will keep looking for the high level input harness for the amp that I no longer have. To those considering purchasing this I recommend to keep looking or find an alternative.

I Just installed this in my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 QC and it was very simple and easy. One of the reasons i bought this is because i got Sirius Satellite radio free for a year and didnt want to lose that with another aftermarket radio. but ill probably exchange this out with my old pioneer for the high and low pass filters for better sound quality.

Definitely does the job however, the input pins (where the high level ins go) has a flimsy connector. The set screws do not hold the wires in well. If you have a lot of space (not behind the deck etc.) this may not be an issue but in tight spaces where wires may experience tension, the connector will likely lose a wire or two.

Great Product For Adding An Amp 2 Factory System!!

Written By kevycan, Conway, SC on Sunday, July 13, 2008

This is a great product! Wired it up to my factory 1996 GM Monsoon CD Player & it sounds great! No noise, no problems. It Even comes with a manual to show you how to wire it up to any system that you have. I used it to put in a single subwoofer setup (1000 watt amp & Sony 12"), so I'am only using the rear 2 channel setup. Great product, highly recommended. VERY, VERY easy to install. Only downside is there is no screw holes for you to bolt it down to something. But, it's ok doesn't take away from a great product!

Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter

Written By Jeff, Harrisonburg, Va on Monday, September 10, 2007

Had to take it out of the plastic case because there isn't any way to mount it, no holes to bolt it down. Doesn't even have holes to use plastic ties unless you count those little flimsy chicklets on the side, but they seem much better for snapping off and tossing at your girlfriend to irritate her than for securing the device to a mounting surface. Once out of the case it's actually nice, good thick double sided board, mostly good quality components (hate the plastic pots, flimsy), almost looks hand soldered. Maybe it is ??? haha. There are only three convenient ground pads on it that are worth trying to drill through to add standoffs so you can mount the board to something, but those three are in a nice wide triangle pattern that only leaves one corner kind of hanging out there on it's own unsupported. I don't find this a problem because I just put a forth standoff under the fourth corner and put aquarium sealant on top to cushion it and it supports the board just fine using the other three screws to actually hold it down. Performance is good. So well built it's certainly bigger than it needs to be, but not much you can do with those four big transformers in it. Like the connectors on it, and has good quality caps. Worth the money, and that's high praise in this day and age!

I didnt have any excess noise either.

It does its job as it is intended to do but it is so poorly made that mine actually broke in half (plastic split), so i had to tape it back togther.
Like i said it will do its job but trust me, the saying is true you get what you pay for and if it were me i would pass this by and spend a little more on a nice piece of equipment.
Also there is no way to mount it so you have to get creative.

I called crutchfield and they even told me what color wires to tap in to on my make and model of car..Which I thought was highly helpfull...After I got this installed it didn't work..So I called crutchfield again..They walked me through some trouble shooting, the unit was just bad..So the tech said he would send me one out the next business day..I had that item in 3 business days..It took me this time less than 2 minutes in install it..Worked perfect...Thanks a lot crutchfield..Great customer service...

Decent for Price

Written By Zack, Pass Christian, MS on Tuesday, July 11, 2006

This line-out converter works fairly well. It has three different settings, depending on how you need to use it. I installed it as a way to get a signal from my factory cd-player to my aftermarker amplifier. The signal quality was great, I noticed no noise. The instruction manual is the same size as the unit, so it can be kept in your glove box, or under the unit itself.

Pros: Three settings, Adjustable levels, good instruction manual, groundable, looks decent.

Cons: A bit flimsy, not high quality material.

It's a great module, but what the heck is that little black wire that hangs off of it? Please let me know!

[Editor's Note: According to Crutchfield's Product Research team, the black ground wire is to be used if there is noise in the system. If you have no noise, it can be taped off and left unused.]
