Beauty that's more than skin deep
If your ears are golden but not your budget, Sennheiser's HD 598s should be at the top of your short list. These outstanding headphones can deliver a listening experience that's close to Sennheiser's own highly regarded HD 650s a performance benchmark in the headphone world for a fraction of the price. In our book, that makes 'em an audiophile bargain. They combine handsome good looks with high-gloss wood accents and an extra-comfortable fit. And their high-accuracy sound will bring you closer to the the heart and soul of your music.
Sophisticated design for exceptional sound
The '598s smooth and balanced sound is true to the original recording, without the sonic coloration that sometimes plagues other headphones. Sennheiser's advanced drivers and open-air design help eliminate distortion, superbly re-creating the dynamics and details of your music. The end result is a spaciousness and accuracy that will amaze you, and keep you listening far into the night.
So comfortable, all you'll feel is the music
Plush velour earcups gently cover your ears (even if you wear glasses) allowing you to enjoy long listening sessions in total comfort. The single-sided headphone cord is detachable, so you can easily untangle it. Plus, if the cord gets damaged, you can simply replace it rather than purchase a whole new pair of headphones.
From the review Comfortable acoustics: relaxing with the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones
"I thoroughly enjoyed the long listening sessions I had with the Sennheiser HD 598 headphones. Even after four or five hours, they felt just as comfortable as when I first put them on. Regardless of what genre of music I chose, the headphones reproduced the songs with fidelity and clarity. And for active listening, that's all I need."
Ralph Graves, Crutchfield Blog Editor and A/V Writer
For starters, I need to point out that 'coolness factor' is irrelevant to me and I don't know whether these are 'cool' or not. And I think it is ridiculous to need to rate open back headphones as to their noise reduction functionality. They achieve their wonderful sound qualities in part because they do not reduce noise for one's neighbors. Getting to what matters, or matters to me, I love that these headphones all one to hear incredible detail across the sound spectrum. I listen primarily to classical music and within that category especially to opera, voice, piano as well as to orchestra. I enjoy jazz as well. On these headphones, I heard all the detail in rapid, sometimes thunderous piano and piano with violin. I had heard some of the same performances, on international webcasts on Sennheiser on-ear Momentums, where I felt the mid-range to be just mud. (I returned those, of course, and bought the HD 598s). With a base violin, a guitar, whatever the string instrument it's ditto as to clarity. And voice, my greatest addiction, is a pleasure. A large sound stage is also important for me; think opera house, recital hall. The Momentums I returned for these were not comfortable. By contrast, one is barely aware of the 598s so it's possible to just inhabit the music. Can you tell I'm pleased with then598s?
Pros: Clear, detailed sound across the spectrum. Large sound stage.
Cons: These would be big to trek around a lot, but that's not their purpose.
I've barely used these, but I'm definitely loving them. Comfort is ridiculous! Can't wait for these to be broken in a bit as I've been told the sound will only get better
Pros: Sound and comfort are top-notch.
Good sound that is unchanged by headphones. Colors may not be to everyone's liking but they perform well on my system.
Pros: Good price and performance.
Cons: Colors (Cream/Brown) may not be to everyone's liking.
Better sound than from my high end speakers. Perfectly balanced throughout the tonal range.
Pros: Sound reproduction quality and value.
Coolness factor?????? It reproduces music without coloration and with a purity I have never heard before in a pair of headphones! Absolutely no distortion! Very comfortable on the head,no uncomfortable band pressure on top of head!
Pros: Comfortable Covers ears well Has a very good directional quality to the music.
Cons: Cost Local support,nonexistent.
THe sound is full and relatively true to life. Open design, so you can hear surrounding sound. Although others around you might hear the music played, they would need to be immediately next to you and its relatively low in amplitude. It is extremely light, giving the wrong impression that may be cheaply made,, but quality and finish is good. The velour pads is different than most headphones and does produce some pressure with prolonged wear, but that is minimal and overall, very comfortable. My only complaint is that with that for the price, an additional coiled cord and carrying case or bag should have been included.
Pros: Light, unique look and color with retro design
Cons: No coiled cord or travel case.
Great set of headphones. I was looking for a solid set of headphone to pair with Astell and Kerns 120. Read reviews and tried these out at the outlet store. They are very comfortable, sound fantastic, and are a great buy for the money
Excellent headphones, will only get better with burn in time.
Pros: Comfort, sound quality
love the look and feel of the headphones. Makes the listening even better
Pros: comfort, style, adaptability to the other components of my system
Cons: mislead by the shipping promise of time. customer service was apologetic but offered no discount or future purchase discounts.
Great so far. I am still in the break-in mode and I like the headphones.
Pros: Vocals and mids are beautiful. Very nice. they do not fatigue my ears.
Cons: Needs a touch more low end , but I realize these are headphones
They are the most comfortable headphones I have ever owned. The sound quality is clear and true.
Pros: Comfortable, well built, great clearity
Cons: has non
The Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones have great sound and are well made. I have worn these phones for hours at a time. They are not noise reducing headphones but do filter out some outside noise. They deliver quality sound clarity for a reasonable price. I would recommend these to anyone.
Pros: Well made, Excellent sound, light weight and easy to wear
Cons: none so far
Great sound. Excellent comfort.
Pros: Sound detail. Comfort.
Cons: No case included
These are not noise reducing headphones. They are lightweight, easy to put on and take off. They deliver impeccable sound clarity and a richness that envelops the listener. Costwise they are at the bottom of the audiophile class, but to me they are all I need. I listen to classical and jazz. I would appreciate a better cable and would pay more for one.
Pros: comfortable, very good looking, light; wonderful rich sound.
Cons: Would appreciate a better cable.
Outstanding headphones! Sound reproduction is superb. All listening modes; music, blu-ray movies, etc. Comfort is exceptional over long periods, ie 3.5hrs. Very light on head. Colors may not be for everyone but I found them very appealing and refreshing change from standard black, grey or white.
Pros: Great sound, build quality, comfort.
Cons: Color may not appeal to everyone.
Finally - head comfort while wearing earphones - far unlike the prior twice-as-expensive Yamaha Pro 500 phones, no matter the position - never comfortable, plus always aware of the top-heavy weight; one-hour wear-time max. Three hours with the Sennheiser's... not a problem, nor is there a readily perceived buildup of heat or moisture; again, unlike the Yamaha's. Sennheiser 598's - exactly as suggested by Crutchfield advisers... comfortable. Sound reproduction: very listenable, nothing exaggerated, no booming bass (the Yamaha's were slightly prone to the latter) Very nice lock-in connector plugging cable into the headphone; cable itself is smooth, flexible, reasonably unobtrusive - is worn on the left side of your head (single wire connect to headset, not dual wires - again, more comfortable than "Y" wires) Overall weight is well balanced, barely noticed thanks in large part to the ear-comfort foam. Three-hour wear time says it all
Pros: Ear-comfort, reasonably well shaped to the head and ears, balanced, modest weight that's barely noticed. "Noise Reduction" - not an intended design-type, but very modest sound output externally; user retains reasonable hearing ability to outside environment
Cons: Bulky, but an attribute of all worthy headphones. "Coolness Factor" - a descriptive that's worth nothing; questionable why it even exists within a lineup of rating attributes.
Also very comfortable and I wear glasses. Clean and clear sounding
For the price, I would say it is a reasonable buy. Good to listen to music / videos. My child uses it to hear his online lectures. The Sound Quality is very clear, is fairly comfortable, but no significant noise reduction.
The superb sound is just what I most wanted. The cups are soft, comfortable and fit well over the ears. I use this for listening to music while walking and appreciate the light weeight.
Pros: Excellent sound, light weight and comfortable.
Cons: Does not block external sound and leeks sound to adjacent people.
My MDRX-10 are very stylish along with very comfortable. When I use them on my I Phone 5, I can adjust them to whatever type of music I am listening to.
Pros: All around good quality!!
Cons: Nothing so far
These Headphones are worth the cost. However, I think that I like the sound of Grados a little more. The Bass reproduction on the Sennheiser seems to be a little light for me. The comfort of these headphones is where I think these beat the Grados. I'm going to get a headphone amp and see how this will help improve the quality of the sound. The issue may be that I'm currently running the headphones through the headphone jack in my receiver.
sound great for the money their not true audiophile but really nice I got the nuforce d/a converter and that makes a big difference you need a good signal for them but they can bring your music to life very happy to have them
Pros: great sound good price
Cons: their are better ones if you have the money
The Sennheiser HD 598 headphones are great! They offer an imressive wide sound stage with the superb sound Sennheiser is known for. The frequency response is superb - getting all the highs and lows just right. The comfort of these cans is superb. They fit over my e ars and lay comfortably on my head. Although they are not light weight headphones, they do not sit heavy on the head and do not exhibit the clamping that this type of headphone is noted for. Their most impressive feature is the great soundstage they offer - wide and expansive. They do not offer the sound isolation of a closed-back headphone, but I feel the open sound they offer contributes to the wide soundstage. One of the best features in my opinion is the fact that these cans have only one cable. The two able system seems to be the norm these days, but I find them uncomfortable and a bit confining I have a pair of HD 650s that I love, but the dual cables just annoy me. The HD 598 cans have it all!
Pros: Comfort Great sound
Cons: None at the present.
I have purchased several sets of Headphones, but find that the Sennheiser 598's are right at the top of both sound and design. They are some of the best looking and best sounding headsets available today. They are very comfortable and perform beautifully for all types of music. I have 4 four other headsets but keep going back to the 598' s for clear and remarkable, accurate sound. They perform as well as any headsets now available on the market!
Pros: Style, sound, and comfort are right up there with the best.
Cons: None to speak of!
I purchased the HD 598 after first purchasing the HD558 and the Bose AE2. I have had the Sennheiser RS130, 900 mhz wireless for 8 years. Good headphone , but wearing after much use. I had read many reviews touting the HD558 and how much better the bass response was than the 598's. I tried them at a local store along with Bose and Grado and ATH. I liked the Grado, but did not feel they were comfortable. The Bose AE and the 558 I was not sure which I like best. I brought them home and compared them to my old RS130. Neither the AE or the 558 had as good as highs or clarity in the midrange. The 558 was muddy and if you had say, cymbals you would hear a tick not a ringing sound that you get with the RS130. The Bose was better with midrange, but lacked a strong bass. The Bose also felt more fragile than Sennheiser. The 558 did have better sound stage during movies, but lacked during music. So after doing further review I ordered the HD598. As good or better highs than my old RS. As good as sound stage as the 558. Felt more durable than Bose. Bass response was tight and strong, midrange and highs very good. Excellent for action movies. During a good recording you can hear fingers sliding on the guitar string. I use them with a Yamaha receiver and a Rolls headphone amp. I don't know what they sound like with an Iphone or Ipad. I have had them for over a month, listening at least two hours a day if not more, would most certainly buy again. Excellent headphones!
Pros: Excellent highs, midrange Very good bass response Highly durable Superior sound stage Very comfortable and light weight I think they look good, but who cares really.
Cons: More money than I like to spend on headphones. Some people would put noise reduction here. However these are open headphones, noise reduction is not a consideration for this style.
Great set of headphones. I demo'd these with the HD650s and ended up with the 598s. More plastic on the 598s gives them a slightly cheaper feel, but it also makes them significantly lighter. Over long sessions, I found the 598s to be much more comfortable with very little (if any) compromise in sound quality.
quick note: I didn't test these with an ipod or any other non-amplified sources, so I can't attest to how they sound on-the-go, but for apartment dwellers who want full sound reproduction without bugging the neighbors, these are an excellent choice.
Pros: Great sound, very light and comfortable over long listening sessions
Cons: none really, unless you get really nitpicky.
They sound very clear and natural, great looks and style.
Pros: light weight, you dont even know they been on your head for 3 hrs,
Cons: havent found any yet.
GOOD LOOKING AND SOUNDING HEAD PHONE FOR THE MONEY. LIGHT WEIGHT AND FITS COMFORTABLE OVER THE EARS. I HAVE FIVE OTHER SETS AND THIS IS THE ONE I USE MOST OF THE TIME.
Pros: GOOD CLEAN SOUND WITH PLENTY OF BASS.
Cons: NICE DESIGN, GOOD CONSTRUCTION BUT FEELS FRAGILE.
This is by far the best set of headphones I have ever owned. Extremely comfortable for hours at a time, even while wearing glasses. The open back design gives the sound an expansive quality. I would describe the sound as rich and highly detailed, maybe just a bit on the warm side but pleasantly so. The HD 598 performs superbly with all the types of music I listen to, classical, jazz, easy listening, folk, world, country & classic rock. Male and female vocals are a joy to listen to, from Elvis and Tennessee Ernie Ford to Barbara Streisand. Even though I bought these headphones for music I wanted to see how they performed with movies. While no substitute for a full set of HT speakers the HD 598 is surprisingly good with movies. They may not provide the chest thumping bass of a good subwoofer however, with the 598 I hear off screen conversations I never knew existed with my home theater speakers. Change "coolness factor" to "classy". I didn't rate "noise reduction" at 5 stars because, as an open back design, they are not intended to be noise reduction headphones. Nor is the HD 598 a portable headphone. They are large and come with a 10' cord. What the HD 598 is is a true audiophile headphone that can be listened to for hours in complete comfort and musical enjoyment. They are easily driven by the headphone jack of a normal amp/receiver. no special headphone amp needed. They are a little pricy but well worth every cent.
Pros: Extremely comfortable, even with glasses; Expansive sound stage; excellent bass response; clear mids and highs; non-fatiguing even after hours of listening (my sessions run to 3+ hours kicked back in a recliner); musically superb; great with movies also; high quality audiophile performance; no special headphone amplifier needed (though they would probably sound even better with one).
Cons: None for their intended purpose
If i wanted more comfort I'd have to pay 3x's as much. The excellent sound more than makes up for whatever minor discomforts.
Pros: Great Sound. 10 ft. cord and full size jack means no more adapters and extension cords in this house. Solid feel.
Cons: I little tiring around ear piece after an hour of listening.
It is great! Clear, crisp sound. It is extremely comfortable. You can spend half a day in it and not notice them. They not built for noise reduction - they built for sound quality, but it perfect for office environment. P.S. Because of open structure folk around you can hear what you listening if they are close.
Pros: Great sound, comfortable, looks cool. With Crutchfield promotion price - excellent choice for that money.
Cons: Wired - but it is not really problem - just design. If you want wireless - buy another model.
FOR THE MONEY YOU WILL BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND A BETTER HEADPHONE. SOUND QUALITY SUPER. FIT IS JUST GREAT. GOT THE CASH AND ON THE FENCE, GO MON YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY.
Pros: SEE ABOVE
It was worth the expense. They sound excellent.
Pros: Music sounds great, looks and feel like they'll last for years. My last Sennheiser padded headphones lasted over 20 years, and they still sounded good.
Cons: Sound reduction not as good as some claimed.
Great headphones! Outstanding clarity throughout the entire range. Extremely comfortable for long term wear and they look great as well. I would give them 5 stars if I didn't also own the HD380pro which I like even better. It has a much more pronounced bass line than the 598's and also offers great claity, comfort, and slightly better noise reduction from the closed back design. Either set is well worth the money. They are even better then listening through the stereo speakers. Great investment.
Pros: Quality sound, construction, comfort, and clarity.
Cons: The bass could be a bit more pronounced and I wish the jack was the miniture with the full size adaptor rather than the other way around. Petty complaints at best.
Big ear cups for comfort, excellent sound without exaggerated bass, outstanding clarity. Overall, the sound quality is comparable to my Infinity floor standing speakers but in a compact personal size package.
Pros: Comfort, sound quality
I purchased these headphones to use with my PC and laptop connected to a Dragonfly USB DAC, a 2nd generation iPod Touch, as well as with my Harman Kardon 3490 stereo receiver that runs a Marantz CD player, Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable, and a VortexBox/Logitech Squeezebox Touch music server system. These headphones are fabulous and are such an improvement over the standard Apple ear buds I had been using. They produce a rich, warm sound, and the music feels complete now - particularly my digital tracks. The headphones are sturdy, extremely comfortable to wear, and are visually attractive with a nice color scheme. I have found that not only does the music sound incredibly better, but these headphones have completely eliminated the listening "fatigue" I had experienced with ear buds and my vintage, inexpensive, Koss headphones from "back-in-the-day". The music is now clear, warm, nuanced, and feels like there is a much bigger sound stage in the reproduction. They handle all the ranges incredibly well and I am hearing nuanced details that I had been missing.
These headphones are definitely high quality as well as functionally and musically superior to anything I had previously used. I highly recommend them to enhance your music-listening experience.
Pros: Attractive and lightweight design. Wonderful sound reproduction in all ranges. Warm and rich sound stage with perfect delivery of nuanced musical detail. Included adapter adds flexibility to use with a variety of audio equipment.
Cons: None - unless you are looking only for specific "noise reducing" headphones which I was not.
I bought these headphones to use with my Kindle Fire HD. The 3.5mm plug that came with the item did not fit the Kindle because the plug housing is too thick to allow the plug to seat properly. Amazon sells an adapter plug that will solve this problem, if you pare down the rubber housing around the 3.5mm plug. The headphones were worth solving the plug problem. They are everything that the Crutchfield review says they are.
Pros: Great balanced sound
Cons: Adapter plug doesn't work with Kindle
I was amazed on how comfortable these headphones are. I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Pros: Light, Comfortable
Cons: None so far
I bought this headset as I was looking something best w.r.t audio quality and comfortable to the ear buds, while listening for long time. I was initially considering the BOSE lineup,as I have been using their speakers, but was not getting what I was looking for in my price range in BOSE.
Pros: Good build, sound quality, comfortable -- the cushion for the ear buds
Cons: no Mic!!,the sound leakage ( some one who is around 2-5 feet can hear the sound from the headphones, when playing in medium to high levels)
Great headphones. Awesome sound. Nice bass without being booming. Makes it a real treat to listen to John Entwistles' bass on Who LPs and the percussion on Santana albums. Every bit the equal soundwise of the Koss Pro4AAA phones I bought in 1979 and which sadly have out after over 30 years of service.
Pros: Great sound, The instruments and vocals are reproduced nicely but even better they reproduce the spaces between the instruments well.
Cons: Maybe they should take a lesson from Koss and use the fluid filled padding. Am concerned how long the padding will last.
The Bodies - This set of headphones was my 2nd Sennheiser purchase. The 598 HDs expanded to fit my head just fine, and they are light and comfortable. They are also very attractive and the color combination is appreciated. I've read complaints from other places about the cord being unable to be removed and being 'sticky', but the cord in mine is removable from the headphones through a "Twist-Lock" on the can. It is a bit sticky though, and quite LONG at nearly 10 ft.
About the audio - The sound is best described as focused & vocal. The stage and sound field are not as huge as the higher end models like the HD800 or Grado RS series, but the precision and tonal neutrality are wonderful. The Sennheiser reputation for 'holophonic', 'in your head' sound projection is well maintained in this pair of phones. These are *NOT* bass cannons, the open back style and projective positioning make booming pressure in the ears impossible. Still they REPRODUCE very low frequencies in a balanced and intense manor, every note is heard faithfully, just not powerfully. Rap, Dubstep, and Industrial Music sounds better in other phones.
I have tried: Classical, New Age, Rock, Heavy Metal, Country, Industrial, and Dubstep through these phones. On an extraordinarily powerful Hybrid Headphone amp.
Pros: Attractive appearance Long -REMOVABLE- Cord Adapter for mini-jacks included Lightweight & very comfortable Vast range of sound reproduction Intense 'In your head' style projection Open back means being able to hear others when set at lower volume Fairly low impedance (50 ohms), can be driven by Ipod's 1v output (if you want to do such a thing). Good power handling, they have not self destructed at the hands of my Lyr @ 12:00 listening position. Good value for the price
Cons: Bass reproduction, while present, is not at all powerful Reproduction of Intense bass results in somewhat muted mid-range character during that passage. The Headband, while very, very comfortable is quite large and may prevent laying back or certain listening positions. The Cord enters the phone body straight down, and it frequently presses against my shoulder or neck, and I'm 6'6". Powerful Projection has a physical impact, and can fatigue over long listens.
Excellent cans for the money.Very comfortable to wear. Deep base when used with an equalizer. Highs exhibit a slight rolloff about 15k, then pick up from 25k to the claimed 38k. Best clarity in the midrange around, with breathy vocals (especially female vocalists) and excellent sibilance. An "S" sounds like an S. Would rather a quick detach cord, a failsafe in case you pull it too hard.
Pros: Lightweight, but fullbodied sound.
Cons: None so far.
My second pair of Sennheiser headphones, lost the last set (which I was fond of) in a move, thankfully they weren't nearly as exotic or priced like this set. I'm very happy with the HD598's in the brief amount of time I've owned them. Excellent sound reproduction across the spectrum - particularly the tight bass. I find them very comfortable, certainly comfortable enough for extended listening sessions, attributed to the very soft earcups & soft leather head crown cushioning. I have a vintage Sansui 9090DB receiver from the early 70's and these headphones totally complement the output from it. I can't 'crank' this receiver 24/7 - so I needed a strong set of comfortable headphones that would allow me to enjoy music at volume no matter the hour of the day or night. They also sound good with my Classic I-Pod. These Sennheiser headphones fully meet my needs, insuring the music quality going into my ears keeps me satisfied with the sources I listen from. I'm happy with my purchase.
Pros: Sennheiser is a quality manufacturer. Excellent sound reproduction across the frequency spectrum, very comfortable & smartly styled, easy adaptable plug from full size stereo to mini-plug.
Cons: I haven't found any 'cons' ~ at least not at this time of year (winter). I live in a warm weather area & might have to take more listening breaks when the temps are higher.
This is the second set of headphones I purchased from Sennheiser and I'm very pleased with them. I was specifically looking for phones with the open ear style. Please note if you are looking for over-emphasized bass as is common in rap music these are probably not for you. I use them to listen to Symphonic music and movie sound tracks mostly. The sound stage is excellent much better than you will experience with closed ear design headphones. These are not for wearing out and around they are for serious listening. If you are looking for phones for this type of listening experience these are highly recommended. As in the past customer service with Crutchfield was flawless.
Pros: Great frequency response and wonderfully realistic sound stage for classical music, Jazz, etc.
Cons: Normal "draw backs" associated with open ear design -- lots of sound bleed (others can hear your music) will not block outside noises; also cord is very long, not suitable for "on the go" listening.
A lot of people were complaining about the bass. As a guy with 2 800 watt rms subs in my Jeep, this had me worried. No idea what people were talking about. The bass is exactly where it should be. It is deep and every note of the bass guitar is heard perfectly. The balance on these headphones is great. Maybe other reviewers of this headphone just dont know how to use an equalizer. The only "negative" I would have would be that I cant enjoy some of my music because the headphones point out poor recordings very well.
Great headphones if you want above average quality at decent price. Super comfortable, good sound, sturdy construction
If you are a office, home, commuter, and you plan on buying these i would strongly recommend against buying these headphones. If you are a professional in a studio I would definitely recommend.
Pros: Great handcrafted product, amazing quality in sound and craft.
Cons: Not for someone who often listens with ipod/iphone, too big for everyday, home, office use. The design makes the music loud enough for everyone around you to hear it as well.
I had originally owned AKG Q701's for for less than a week and sent them back to another retailer due to a manufacturing defect with the removable cable that could not be removed. I researched the Sennheiser HD 598's and decide to go with them rather than reorder another pair of AKG Q701's and am very pleased with the change. In my comparison between both headphones the best buy are the Sennheiser HD 598's.
Pros: First of all the sound quality is rich and clean with just the right amount of bass. Secondly the over all comfort is remarkable from the cushioned head band to the velvet ear pads. Thirdly I really like their attractive appearance. And finally for the value, I bought these on sale for half the advertised price of the AKG Q701's. I am very pleased with the purchase of these Sennheiser HD 598"s.
Cons: Nothing negative to say.

I own the Sennheiser HD 598 and it is a wonderful headset. I have not listened to the 558 but I can assure you that the 598 is both stylish and promotes great sound. I have many headsets and would rank it highly at the top of the pack. It is a beautiful set of headphones and most comfortable to wear. I could highly recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a great headset. I had a pair of the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's where were very stylish and pretty, (I purchased the red ones), but sent them back in favor of the Sony 7510's which, I thought, produce a much better sound. You will not be sorry to have the Sennheiser HD 598 Headset. [ ROBERT W Dec 28, 2013 ]
Have not heard the other two, but the 598 is, I believe, one of the best in its price range. The bass response is entirely adequate on a straight-through hookup on a network player with a good headphone amp. I would recommend the 598 to anyone. [ CHARLES Dec 27, 2013 ]
best headphones I own.. sound is well rounded and even [ ben Dec 26, 2013 ]
Hi, i bought the 598, the bass is just right, i listen to classic rock most of the time and there great, the sound is natural but still has good bass, but what i like most about them is the comfort, what does it matter how good they sound if you dont like how they feel on your head, you can wear these for hours, im very pleased with the 598, id buy them again if needed, hope this helps you, take care. Happy Holidays. [ ANTHONY J Dec 26, 2013 ]
Before I bought the 598 I had tried the 558 which I compared to the ATH in a electronics store. I thought the 558 were more comfortable, and clearer than the ATH, bass was about the same. So I ordered the 558 from Crutchfield. I compared the 558 to my old Senn RS130. The 130's had better treble and were more distinct. I ordered the 598's and compared them to the 558, my old 130 and Bose AE that I borrowed. The 598 were the clear winner. More treble, more differential on instruments (like finger on guitar strings) , and just as good as bass, ( tighter though) , as any of the sets. Mind I drive them with a Rolls headphone amp and a Yamaha receiver so i have enough power and equalisation . I think the 598's are as comfortable as an over the ear open headphone can be. I wear them for at least 15 hours a week. They have only gotten better sounding and more comfortable. They are excellent on Movies or music (rock, country, blues usually, some classical). Mind the fact they are open headphones , so sound isolation and leakage can be a problem if you are using them with other people in the room. Remember good headphones usually take a couple weeks to break in and get their best sound. Enjoy. [ CRAIG E Dec 26, 2013 ]
I have Sennheiser HD 598 - it extremely well made and sounds great. I use it at work almost whole day - no problem. Sounds great! Don't know about Audio-Technica ATH-M50 sound quality - but it looks like they got smaller size cup - so might be problem to use them long time. [ Dzianis Dec 26, 2013 ]
