Our take on the Sennheiser HD 700

by Dave Bar
Sennheiser

Savor every note

Close your eyes and imagine you're in a front-row seat at your own private concert. That's what it feels like when you slip on a pair of Sennheiser HD 700s. Their amazing transparency, speed, and clarity will reveal the subtleties and emotions of your favorite recordings — from the deep, woody overtones and slapping strings of an upright acoustic bass to the quick intake of breath just before the singer belts out her next verse. You'll hear it all just like it went down. That's because the HD 700s use advanced Sennheiser technology and premium materials to reproduce sound as faithfully and accurately as possible.

HD700

Expert Sennheiser engineering for high-definition sound

The HD 700s feature drivers that are uniquely positioned to send sound waves to your ears at an angle — simulating the way you would normally listen to a pair of stereo speakers in a room. This slight angle helps create a wide soundstage for a more natural listening experience. So, unlike ordinary headphones that box the music inside your head, the HD 700s present every instrument as if you're sitting in the audience at a live concert. The earcups are designed with steel mesh open backs and a patent-pending ventilated magnet structure to help control airflow into and out of the headphones, reducing turbulence for ultra-low distortion levels.

HD 700 vented magnet structure

Sennheiser's patent-pending ventilated magnet system controls airflow in and out of the ear cups for reduced turbulence and lower distortion.

Quality materials and construction

Borrowing design features from Sennheiser's top-of-the-line HD 800, the HD 700s use a vibration-damping frame and headband layered with special materials to help eliminate unwanted resonances. This optimized setup delivers warm, detailed and balanced sound for the audiophile purist. Plus, a detachable silver-plated oxygen-free copper cable provides superior conductivity at higher frequencies for a smooth, extended treble response that shimmers. And the soft, comfy velour ear cushions will have you listening happily for hours.

These high-performance headphones can be driven using the headphone outputs on most home audio systems, but to really hear them in all their glory a headphone amplifier is strongly recommended.

From the review Sennheiser HD 700 headphones: High-performance sound from a top contender

If you are a card-carrying basshead, these headphones are probably not going to give you the performance you are looking for. So you have to ask yourself, what's more important: feeling the bass rattle your skull, or clearly hearing every note the bass player plucks, slaps or picks? If you're willing to give up a little rumble for incredible clarity, the Sennheiser HD 700 headphones will open your ears to a new level of listening.

Features

"Open-Aire" Design: The Sennheiser HD 700 audiophile headphones feature an "open-aire" design to give you an exceptionally natural, spatial, and accurate sound. Unlike closed, noise-isolating earcups, the HD 700's earcups have a specialty steel mesh, molded to the natural shape of the acoustic chamber, to provide an open environment.

Angled Transducers: The HD 700 has angled transducers to resemble the perfect positioning of a pair of reference monitors to put you in the center of the sweet spot. Add Sennheiser's famous DuoFol diaphragm, and you have a fast response, and an ultra-wide soundstage.

Vented Magnet System: The patent-pending technology of the Vented Magnet System manages airflow behind the diaphragm to minimize turbulence. The HD 700's vibration damping frame, created by a special layering of materials, eliminates unwanted resonances from entering the acoustic chamber. The combination of these two technologies results in a lower THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of less than 0.03%.

Headphone Cable: The HD 700 comes with a detachable, 10-foot cable terminated a full sized 1/4" plug. The cable splits to connect to both earcups with two 2.5mm sub-miniplugs. The yoke on the cable can be slid upwards to eliminate unwanted slack. The nylon outer covering quiets contact noise from the cable.

Storage Box: The HD 700 has a sturdy, hinged box with cut-out foam padding for storage of your headphones and attached cable.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 10-42kHz
  • Nominal Impedance: 150Ω
  • Sensitivity (1 kHz/1V): 105dB
  • THD (1kHz/1V): <0.03%
  • Weight: 9.2 ounces (w/o cable); 12.5 ounces (w/cable)

These sound excellent and very accurate. If you want your head to shake from bass beats these aren't for you. IF you want to use them with a computer or iPod, you will need some type of amplification
Pros:
Will built, accurate sound, very comfortable.
Cons:
Too hard to store. Not portable at all, 1/4" plug. No adapter to 1/8".

OMG! What A Difference...

Written By FirstTimeAudiophile, Pasadena, MD on Thursday, January 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first time buying a high-end audiophile quality headphones so I am basing my review solely on how the SD700 compares to my low to medium quality headphones of the past. I have been listening with the SD700 for about two weeks now and I have nothing but praise for these cans at this point. I am mostly listening to MP3 and FLAC audio files through my computer along with an O2 headphone amp/ODAC although I did watch 'Drumline' and was impressed with the sound quality of the marching band scenes. Overall, the sound quality is outstanding and is exceptionally crisp when listening to the higher quality FLAC files as opposed to MP3s. I have no hesitation recommending these Sennheiser SD700s to anyone.
Pros:
Sounds absolutely awesome to me although I admit I am NOT an audiophile at this point and do not have experience with other high-end headphones to compare it's actual sound quality and reproduction. Build quality also seems very good and leaves me with little doubt they will last a lifetime.
Cons:
None at this point.

Be ready to be patience

Written By Houckster, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, December 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had my HD700 for less than a week but I think I can make some reasonably accurate comments about it after about 25 hours of listening. I should point out that I my comments are influenced by my experience with a well-used Sennheiser HD600 with Cardas cable. I have used the HD700 with a PS Audio and a Musical Fidelity headphone amp.

To say that I was underwhelmed with these cans when I first listened would be an understatement. All across the sound spectrum the sound was muffled, especially the highs. OTOH, it also seemed that the soundstage was broader and deeper than the HD600 headphones. I had to remind myself that it would take at least 10-15 hours for the sound to improve as the burn-in process progressed so I have had to be patient. Comments on the web about these phones have indicated that it might be over 200 hours before they reach their full performance but even at 25 hours, I have seen a huge improvement in the sound and they are at least as good as my HD600. I am expecting further improvement albeit further improvement will be more subtle.

I would buy these again without question. I did not give these 5 stars because I'm sure there are better headphones available but at a substantially higher price.
Pros:
A broad, deep and well-defined soundstage. It has a better cable attachment system than the HD600 headphone. They look like they will last a long, long time. They fit on my head securely but I've been wearing them for 4-5 hours at a time without fatigue. They seem equally competent with pop, soundtrack and classical selections.
Cons:
These headphones require a break-in period.

Acoustically Balanced Soundstage in Your Head

Written By INROCK, Summerville, SC on Tuesday, December 10, 2013

On some level, I find it presumptuous to think anybody cares to read my opinion on a set of headphones. Yet, here I am offering my experience with the Sennheiser HD 700 headphones. As a preface, I'm just a rock and pop music lover. I don't purport to be an expert on studio recording or production, and respect professional audio and audiophile journals for their knowledge and perspectives. The truth is that critiques offered by trusted electronics companies and respected sound journalists drive my decisions to buy stereo hi-fi products. Once I determine the product desired to enhance my listening pleasure, I patiently wait for a great price and buy from a reputable source. This leads to my giddy endorsement of the HD 700. At the Christmas holiday sales price, these headphones are a phenomenal bargain and constitute the ultimate private home listening enclosure. I yearn to hear vinyl LPs and CDs truthfully reproduced, devoid of sound alteration. It's fun to groove to the music I believe the artist intended me to hear. My stereo hi-fi set-up facilitates this proclivity, which makes the HD 700 the perfect complement to what I describe as pure, clean, articulate, and honest "between-the-ears" music reproduction. The sound is not sterile or aloof, it is intimate and true. I feel I have a complete acoustically balanced soundstage in my head, with the vocals and instruments in perfect harmony and spatially precise.
Pros:
Sturdy and lightweight construction; Comfortable; Fully envelopes ears; Sound is clear, honest and intimate. For me, the HD 700 produces private music listening nirvana at a price I can afford. MY STEREO HI-FI SET-UP: Onkyo A9070 amplifier; Onkyo C7070 CD player; Technics KAB-modified audiophile SL-1210MK5 turntable with an AT 440MLa cartridge; Axiom M80 tower speakers. [NOTE: Headphones powered directly by Onkyo equipment; i.e. no separate headphone amp.]
Cons:
None. [NOTE: The HD 700 headphones are ideal for home audio listening and appreciation, and not designed or engineered for sound isolation. My noise reduction rating acknowledges this reality. I seldom listen to music at greater than 90dB, so leaking of sound is not a problem in my household.]

Simply fantastic

Written By TheBrainguy, Ohio on Saturday, May 26, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the GRADO SP500 headphones. Although they produce very accurate and warm sound the soundstage is terrible. So I made the decision to try the Sennheiser HD700. Although the Senn's are more they are worth every penny of the difference. The HD 700's produce the same warm sound in midrange instruments as the Grado's but with a much cleaner and clearer sound. And best of all the sound stage is nothing short of incredible. I listen mostly to jazz, classical, and opera but amazingly they also have better bass than the Grado's. And yes they are much more comfortable than the Grado's even with an upgrade to the Grado earpads. I am stunned. When I listen to Wagner with the SennheIser's I can tell where the singers are positioned. Horns are also absolutely fabulous...I have only had them for 1 day and they are yet to be broken in. Also note, I am powering my headphones with a Bellari headphone amp. I have read that the Sennheiser HD 800's require an amp. I was amazed to find that the HD 700's play louder than the Grado's (which fare rather well without an amp). Whatever Sennheiser did differently with the HD 700 - they did it right.
Pros:
Definition Tonal Accuracy Power Bass Sound Stage Comfort Design Quality
Cons:
They are open phones and can be heard by anyone in the room. I live alone so this is not a problem for me.
