About the Sennheiser IE 800

David Brown

Audiophiles, you may now leave the building

Audiophiles no longer have to tether themselves to their home rig for pure sonic bliss. Get the Sennheiser IE 800 headphones and get going without leaving behind the comforts of uncompromised sound quality. You'll enjoy rich detail and a smooth tonal balance with these remarkably small in-ears. Their unique design represents a breakthrough for in-ear headphones. Rather than the multiple armature drivers typically used to drive high-end earphones, the IE 800 uses Sennheiser's specially developed 7mm “extra wide band” dynamic drivers. These tiny full-range transducers are able to cover a wide frequency range with incredible clarity in an extremely compact enclosure that's easy to drive with a portable music player. So load up on lossless files and take your tunes with you, without leaving any of the musical details behind.

Sennheiser IE 800 in-ear headphones

Unique design minimizes distortion and enhances clarity

The drivers aren't the only unique design feature of the IE 800. Check out the dual vented enclosures, which direct airflow away from the diaphragm and out the earpieces for clear, open sound. This reduces distortion to a negligible level, so you hear every pristine plink of the piano or sizzle of the cymbal. Sennheiser's patented dual-chamber absorber further enhances bass detail by preventing loud low-frequency sounds from drowning out the more subtle ones. So not only do the IE 800s deliver deep bass response, but more nuanced bass as well.

Built to last

These certainly aren't your typical in-ear headphones, in design, sound, or construction. The IE 800's scratch-resistant ceramic housing provides the durability you would expect from headphones built with so much care. Two protective meshes protect the IE 800's inner workings from outside contaminants, and the included cleaning tool lets you keep the mesh dirt-free for many years of listening enjoyment.

Find the right fit

You'll need just the right fit to maximize your enjoyment of the finely-tuned IE 800. Sennheiser includes five pairs of silicon ear tips — three round and two oval — so the earpieces are certain to fit your ear size and shape comfortably and securely. The correct-sized ear tips also provide effective noise isolation, so less music escapes your ears while reducing exposure to outside noise. Most importantly, they ensure optimum sound quality, so you can hear all the details of your music everywhere you go with these highly portable, highly revealing headphones.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser IE 800 is a state-of-the-art in-ear headphone, loaded with innovative technology. The headphones come with 5 pairs of earbuds, a two-piece cord (total length: 43"), cleaning tool, and a premium leather carrying case.

Transducers: The IE 800s feature an extra-wide-band (XWB) transducer system with 7mm linear-phase drivers. These dynamic drivers are capable of delivering distortion-free sound, even at high sound pressure levels up to 125 dB (at 1V/1kHz).

Innovative Construction: The IE 800 headphones are designed, developed, and made in Germany. The drivers are housed in a scratch-resistant ceramic enclosure with state-of-the-art dampened two chamber absorbers (D2CA).

Ear Tip Assortment: The headphones come with five pairs of ear tips: two ergonomic, oval-shaped pairs for maximum comfort, and three traditional round pairs (the medium-sized round ear tips come installed on the IE 800s). All of the ear tips are made of soft silicone rubber that provide a good seal to enhance the lower frequencies.

Protective Meshes: Two protective meshes, one in the earbud cone and another in the ear tip help to prevent contamination, and to facilitate cleaning. Dirt particles and ear wax can't penetrate the meshes, so the headphone chambers don't get clogged and block sound waves. The supplied cleaning tool helps you remove dirt from the earbud and tips when necessary.

Customer Q&A

Q
Do you have to have the headphone amplifier with it or is it good on its own?

I have used it both ways and even bought the Sony NW-ZX1 to use as a source. Most of the time I just listen through my iPhone which is surprisingly satisfying. These are the best in ear headphones I've had and I've had most of the IEMs in this price range including the Ultimate Ears custom fitted. Definitely worth the money. You'll love them! Mark E

With an impedance of only 16?, the IE 800 don't need a headphone amplifier to drive it. You may plug it directly to your DAP or mobile phone.

With my experience on my IE-800's The first week or so I did have the amp and they sounded great. A whole lot better than the CX-275's I had for a while. I do have to say the 275's are very good. When the little amp showed up wow there was a big difference in the sound quality with more power to it. And the amp makes even a $20 pair sound much better. I also use the amp for my Audeze EL-8's and they sound great. If you buy the IE-800's and take them to a high end audio store they should have really nice home headphone amps to check out what power can do with the IE-800's. I am not sure on the IE-800's what the max voltage is for it. The teac HA p50 amp max power is 160 millivolts. And on my EL-8s the max voltage is 4 volts. There is no chance that HA-P50 will blow your IE-800's. There are several portable headphone amps out there from 100.00 and more. A plan to also buy a Oppo HA2 another amp with a more power. I want to listen to it with only Frequency Response of 20 Hz - 200 kHz. instead of the IE-800's 8 - 41000 Hz (-3 dB) Frequency Response . Anyway yes they sound great without a amp but check out a amp sometime.

I have used it with Iphones, ibasso dx90, chord Hugo and ak240 player so it is quite versatile and no amplifier is needed as it is low ohm rated earphones. I have more expensive in ear monitors but the IE 800 beats them all.

If you have them in your ears, properly sealed for best listening, I do not think there is much if any sound leak

A
No. They hold the music very very well. In fact the best I've owned. Within 1.5 feet I would say they would hear nothing to maybe a slight murmur at high levels.
