Audiophiles, you may now leave the building

Audiophiles no longer have to tether themselves to their home rig for pure sonic bliss. Get the Sennheiser IE 800 headphones and get going without leaving behind the comforts of uncompromised sound quality. You'll enjoy rich detail and a smooth tonal balance with these remarkably small in-ears. Their unique design represents a breakthrough for in-ear headphones. Rather than the multiple armature drivers typically used to drive high-end earphones, the IE 800 uses Sennheiser's specially developed 7mm “extra wide band” dynamic drivers. These tiny full-range transducers are able to cover a wide frequency range with incredible clarity in an extremely compact enclosure that's easy to drive with a portable music player. So load up on lossless files and take your tunes with you, without leaving any of the musical details behind.

Sennheiser IE 800 in-ear headphones

Unique design minimizes distortion and enhances clarity

The drivers aren't the only unique design feature of the IE 800. Check out the dual vented enclosures, which direct airflow away from the diaphragm and out the earpieces for clear, open sound. This reduces distortion to a negligible level, so you hear every pristine plink of the piano or sizzle of the cymbal. Sennheiser's patented dual-chamber absorber further enhances bass detail by preventing loud low-frequency sounds from drowning out the more subtle ones. So not only do the IE 800s deliver deep bass response, but more nuanced bass as well.

Built to last

These certainly aren't your typical in-ear headphones, in design, sound, or construction. The IE 800's scratch-resistant ceramic housing provides the durability you would expect from headphones built with so much care. Two protective meshes protect the IE 800's inner workings from outside contaminants, and the included cleaning tool lets you keep the mesh dirt-free for many years of listening enjoyment.

Find the right fit

You'll need just the right fit to maximize your enjoyment of the finely-tuned IE 800. Sennheiser includes five pairs of silicon ear tips — three round and two oval — so the earpieces are certain to fit your ear size and shape comfortably and securely. The correct-sized ear tips also provide effective noise isolation, so less music escapes your ears while reducing exposure to outside noise. Most importantly, they ensure optimum sound quality, so you can hear all the details of your music everywhere you go with these highly portable, highly revealing headphones.

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser IE 800 is a state-of-the-art in-ear headphone, loaded with innovative technology. The headphones come with 5 pairs of earbuds, a two-piece cord (total length: 43"), cleaning tool, and a premium leather carrying case.

Transducers: The IE 800s feature an extra-wide-band (XWB) transducer system with 7mm linear-phase drivers. These dynamic drivers are capable of delivering distortion-free sound, even at high sound pressure levels up to 125 dB (at 1V/1kHz).

Innovative Construction: The IE 800 headphones are designed, developed, and made in Germany. The drivers are housed in a scratch-resistant ceramic enclosure with state-of-the-art dampened two chamber absorbers (D2CA).

Ear Tip Assortment: The headphones come with five pairs of ear tips: two ergonomic, oval-shaped pairs for maximum comfort, and three traditional round pairs (the medium-sized round ear tips come installed on the IE 800s). All of the ear tips are made of soft silicone rubber that provide a good seal to enhance the lower frequencies.

Protective Meshes: Two protective meshes, one in the earbud cone and another in the ear tip help to prevent contamination, and to facilitate cleaning. Dirt particles and ear wax can't penetrate the meshes, so the headphone chambers don't get clogged and block sound waves. The supplied cleaning tool helps you remove dirt from the earbud and tips when necessary.

Love them. Read a number of reviews and it was between these and the Shure se846. The Sennheiser's went on sale and I jumped right on them. The only really complaints I read about was about cable length and microphonic noise. To me cable length is fine I use this in a completely listening mode I.e. sitting in a chair and/or on a airplane or even in bed. No Microphonic issues. One reviewer indicated that when she runs the noise is terrible, don't know why you would use this high a quality ear phone for exercising??? I use a pair of in ear Klipsch's for that. Just was on a trip to the Caribbean and the Sennheiser's were fantastic. Easy to carry and worked great with phone and Fire. Does not provide complete noise isolation but close enough. Only an issue while flying. Did I make the right choice ... yes! Do it again in a heart beat. Worth 799.99.

Pros: Size Kevlar cable Sound quality

Cons: Noise isolation on plane ... again very minor issue. Didn't like case that came with it ... too big. I'm using a smaller case that came with my older Westone's that way I can carry in my pocket.

Excellent sound quality and acceptably wide sound stage for an IEM. They are close to an over the ear headphone experience.

Pros: I have many Sennheiser IEMs and Headphones and the IE 800 lives up to the expected Sennheiser quality, with one exception (See Cons).

Cons: My upper cables are beginning to harden after only 1 month of use. A number of Head-Fiers have this same complaint. Given the upper cables aren't replaceable, this can become a headache if they crack. Then you're periodically sending them back to Sennheiser for warranty replacement (up to 2 yrs, then what?). I had a similar experience with Shure before they switched to detachable cables. This doesn't seem to affect most user but still, for the price you pay, more R&D should have been done.

I have the Sennheiser IE80 but wanted to try the IE800 to see if they were really all that much better. As it turns out they are. The IE800 has a smooth balanced sound signature from the base to the highs. The sound is 'clearer' than the IE80's as well. I love the fit, too. They are very small earphones, and can be worn all day without any concern for fatigue or discomfort. I prefer earphones that are designed to be worn with the cable hanging down, not over the ear, which is how these are made. I am pairing them with an AK120, which results in a wonderful sounding portable music system. The only negative I can find on them is the cord. It is a little shorter than I am use to, and when it rubs on your clothes it causes noticeable microphonic noise. But I would not let that keep you from trying them.

Pros: Smooth and balance sound; excellent separation; small and comfortable

Cons: Cord a little short; cord microphonics noticable when moving around

Excellent top to bottom, ultra-smooth with no peaks, dips, or roughness. Strong bass and treble, but very high quality. Some IEMs have difficulty producing the very deep bass below 25 hz clearly - the IE800 does it with ease. Most comfortable IEM I've ever used.

Pros: Exceptional sound quality.

Cons: Very high price.

Amazing sound

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 8/15/2013 12:23:00 PM

I got into an argument with an audiophile friend, recently. He insisted there was no such thing as a good pair of in-ear headphones. I'm sorry I didn't have a pair of the IE 800's with me.

I auditioned these headphones with a series of high-resolution and lossless audio tracks, and the sound I heard was detailed and accurate. I listened to a piano trio (piano, violin and cello), and not only did I hear all the notes clearly, but a good deal of the room ambiance, the decay of the piano notes, and the string overtones. In other words, everything that makes the recording sound life-like.

I also auditioned some rap and rock test tracks. The bass hit — and hit hard. Even streaming music from Pandora® Internet radio and other music apps sounded much clearer than I generally hear it.

Time to have another conversation with my friend.

If you have them in your ears, properly sealed for best listening, I do not think there is much if any sound leak [ ROD  Feb 19, 2014 ]
No. They hold the music very very well. In fact the best I've owned. Within 1.5 feet I would say they would hear nothing to maybe a slight murmur at high levels. [ Aaron  Feb 19, 2014 ]
