Customer Q&A

Q
When the whole system is plugged into your television, does it cut out the regular sound coming from the TV speakers preventing someone without the headphones from watching the same program on the same television? I am thinking of buying the set for my husband, but I want to watch the same program without headphones. He is hard of hearing: I am not.

This particular system does cut out the TV sound (this is what we wanted). But Sennheiser has another system which does not; their customer service reps are very helpful in answering and advising. BTW, I am very happy with the sound quality, far superior to a previous highly advertised brand.

The person not wearing a loop can listen from the regular speaker. But the good news is that the you can "mute" the TV speakers while someone else is listening through the loop which is great when, for example, someone wants to listen to a sport's prgoram that you do not! This is a great system. Even if you are not hard of hearing, having a second loop is great because you can walk around the house and listen to the TV program from other rooms.

A lot of your question depends on your TV's audio outputs and menu options. I plugged my RR840 into the Audio Out RCA jacks of the TV, and my wife can hear the audio through the normal TV speakers. However, I think that if it is plugged into a TV headphone jack, it might mute the speakers. Warning: The RR840 is a great concept and I really liked the lack of isolation, but the headphone is so flimsily made, that I've had to replace two in a short period. I finally gave up and went to a Sony RF unit with over-the-ear headset. Much more isolation, but they should last a bit longer than a few weeks over the warranty period.

One further point: There is a volume control on each RR840 headset. Thus, when using two sets of headphones with one transmitter, each wearer can set the volume to different levels. You first set the TV volume at a comfortable level before plugging in the transmitter. Them, put on the headphones and set the volume on the headphones wherever you want it.

Plugging in the RR840 does cut off the speakers. There are two ways to handle this issue. First, you can buy a second headphone from Crutchfield for about half the cost of the total RR840 transmitter and receiving headset. Both sets of headphones can receive from the same transmitter. The second headset is listed as a spare part.. The second way is for your husband to investigate hearing aids that Bluetooth into your TV. these are available from a number of suppliers, Widex is one. Your husband should probably have hearing aids anyway. I am such a husband, but I prefer hearing aids without the Bluetooth feature so I use the RR840 along with my wife who is not hard of hearing.

The unit has RCA connections (red/White) that connect to your TV in the back. If you use these connections the sound will still come through the TV speakers as well as the headphones. Some TV's also have a small plug in "mini-jack" for a connection..typically if you plug anything into this jack it will disconnect the TV speakers. So the answer to your question is if your TV is more modern and has RCA jacks in the back you can use these Sennheiser headphones and still hear the sound from the TV speakers as well...simulataneously.
