About the Sennheiser RS 135-9

Jeff Miller

Watch TV or listen to music on your own time

As the parent of a three-year-old, I have to pick and choose when I watch my favorite special effects-filled TV shows. It's not like I can turn on Game of Thrones in the middle of playtime. The Sennheiser RS 135-9 wireless headphone systems lets you watch TV with exciting, detailed sound, even when others are asleep. (The wireless transmitter connects to your TV's headphone jack or analog audio output.)

Sennheiser RS 135-9 wireless headphones

Plug the transmitter into a 3.5mm minijack audio output on your TV or a headphone output on your stereo system.

The on-ear headset has an open-back design for spacious sound from movies, shows, and music. Some sound does escape. But they're certainly more sleep-friendly than blasting the volume on your TV or stereo system

Huge wireless range and rechargeable headset batteries

You plug in the included transmitter the same way you would connect a set of wired ‘phones. It connects to your TV's stereo RCA or 3.5mm minijack audio output, and you also get a 1/4" adapter to accommodate a full-size headphone jack on a stereo system. The radio frequency (RF) transmitter has a maximum range of 330 feet and can send its signal through walls and ceilings. The headphones are powered by included "AAA" rechargeable batteries. With the batteries inserted, just hang the headphones atop the transmitter and charging will automatically begin. You'll get up to 20 hours of use with a full charge.

Soft padding and earcup dials for easy control

When you're binge-watching TV or listening to music for long stretches, comfort is key. The RS 135-9's lightweight headset features soft cloth earcups that rest on your ears. Extra padding lines the top of the headband. The volume control is built for leisure, too — it's located on the right earcup, along with a tuning dial to keep the wireless signal strong, so you don't have to get up to make adjustments.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 135 RF Wireless headphone system consists of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 135) and a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TR 135). The system is designed to enhance the sound of your TV or home audio source, and to give you the freedom to walk around your home with the headphones on.

Wireless Headphones: The HDR 135's wireless headphones feature an open, supra-aural (on-ear) design. The soft-padded ear cups and headband provide hours of listening comfort. The headphones have the power control left ear cup, and volume and tuning controls on the right ear cup. Two charging contacts are located on the inside of the headband. With the batteries installed, the HDR 135 headphones weigh 7.9 ounces.

TR 135 Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output via the attached RCA cable (82" length). The audio is transmitted on the 900 MHz band (926.15 to 927.55 MHz) with FM stereo modulation. The extended transmission range is approximately 328 feet (100 meters) with reception through walls and ceilings. The transmitter is powered by a 9-volt DC power supply/AC adapter. The transmitter features a convenient charging stand for the headphones that extends above the top of the transmitter. Two keyhole slots are provided on the back to allow you to wall-mount the transmitter, if desired.

Audio Connections: The transmitter has an attached audio cable with stereo RCA plugs. Two adapters are included: a female stereo RCA-to-male 3.5mm (1/8") plug, and a female 3.5mm-to-1/4" (6.3mm) plug.

Rechargeable Batteries: The headphones are powered by two (included) "AAA" rechargeable NiMH batteries (1.2V, 600mAh). The batteries fully charge in approximately 18 hours when placed on the charging stand. Typical battery life is approximately 22 hours of use. Standard, non-rechargeable "AAA" batteries should not be used in the headphones.

Additional Headsets: The optional Sennheiser HDR 120 wireless headphones, sold separately, can be used as a second set of headphones for the RS 135-9 system. They operate on the same frequency band with FM stereo modulation. Multiple pairs of headphones can be used simultaneously with the RS 135-9 wireless system.

Q
Can two sets of headphones be used at the same time with the same TV? Both my mother and father need them.

I'm thinking that you might be able to--If so; remember that you have to allow time to charge both--you may be able to get a jack that allows 2 plugs that will allow your power source to plug into both transmitters--not sure about this;but it seems feasible to me==worth a try--good luck
mark j  Apr 20, 2020
A
I would imagine the tv would need 2 inputs for 2 sets of headphones.
cherie  Apr 19, 2020
A
I don't see why they cannot be. Just need a couple of. Signal splitters from the tv output. RCA coupler . one input with 2 outputs. Works well.
john  Apr 19, 2020
A
IF TEHY ARE TEH SAME MODEL THEY SHOULD USE THE SAME SAME FREQUENCY AND BOTH RECEIVE THE SIGNAL.. I KNOW I CAN USE THE HEADPHONES FRO M MY UPSTAIRS TV TRANSMITTER WITH MY DOWNSTAIRS TRANSMITTER, AND THEY ARE DIFFERENT MODELS SO MUST USE SAME FREQUENCY. I CAN WALK OUTSIDE 150FT TO GET THE NEWSPAPER AND STILL LISTEN TO THE TV NEWS=GREAT

Does the TV have to be a "Smart" TV in order to use this product?

I don't think so. My TV is an older Sony, about 10 years old, and the headphones work fine. John

I have no reason to believe that this product requires a smart TV. The product works very well. I am 78 and my hearing in not what it used to be. My wife's hearing is much better. This product allows both of us to watch TV shows together and both of hear the programs. Go for it.

Not that I am aware of. It was a gift. My son-in-law LOVES it!! He uses it all the time and said the sound quality is superb.
susan  Feb 14, 2020
A
No - my Sennheiser is connected to an old (pre-smart) TV. All it needs to work is any TV with Audio-Out RCA jacks.
bruce  Feb 13, 2020
A
No, but you might need to purchase an adapter to match the type of audio output connector provided by the TV..
michael  Feb 13, 2020
A
No. My TV is more than 10 years old.

I wear hearing aids and am wondering if these would work good with them? I am looking to mute TV sound when the wife is asleep. I also am undecided on the over ear or the on ear model? One set only is needed.

Yes so do I and this works fine.

MY 96 YEAR OLD DAD WEARS THESE HEARS GOOD W/O HIS HEARING AIDS ALSO WITH THE USE OF HEARING AIDS
ronald e  Jul 17, 2019
A
I also wear hearing aid but don't wear them when using the Sennheiser RS 135-9. The unit volume control is more than sufficient for my needs. I use the on ear model as they are cooler than over the ear. Once the unit is plugged into the external sound jack the TV is muted and your wife will not be disturbed. I very much like the set.

Q
I received an Sennheiser RS 135 headphone set and a Sennheiser HDR 120 set. Are they compatible with one another?
nancy  Feb 20, 2019

A
I bought them for one of my daughters. I can't answer your question. Sorry
frederick  Feb 21, 2019
A
To be honest, I have no idea. I'm sure there is no harm to be done by trying. I'd slip on the headphones opposite the ones that go with the transmitter you're using and dial through the frequencies. if it doesn't work then they're not compatible. If you're looking to use two headphones at once you can buy just the headphone without the transmitter that you already have and save a few bucks. That's what I did.
richard  Feb 20, 2019
Q
Is there sound latency between the headphones and the TV speakers? i.e. do you hear an echo of the TV speakers when someone else is using the speakers?
bruce  Dec 09, 2018
6 answers
A
no
robert e.  Feb 15, 2020
A
There is no echo in the headset when the headset is on and when the sound on the TV is on. Adjust the frequency on the headset, like on a radio.
marjorie  Dec 13, 2018
A
I purchased this as a gift. They turn the TV down when using the head set as this is primarily how it would be used. The head phone listener enjoys the TV viewing while the other or others in the room enjoy their environment too. I purchased the RS175 for myself and have been quite satisfied with them.
mike  Dec 10, 2018
A
There is definitely latency. If you leave the tv volume up while using the headphones it sounds like an echo chamber. Of course there is no point in doing that, and the picture to sound sync while noticable, is not enough to bother me. That said, I'm a musician, and watching the drummer in concert video makes me crazy!
richard  Dec 09, 2018
A
No noticeable latency noticed by me
donald  Dec 09, 2018
A
No not at all

Q
Can you use these headphones with electric pianos?
shirley  Nov 04, 2018
4 answers
A
Wouldn't know. But they are an excellent head phone. My husband is very hard of hearing and he is able to hear everything that is said on tv. And best of all I can keep the sound at a comfortable level for me. Highly recommend them.
shirley  Nov 05, 2018
A
I don't know. They work great with TVs. My husband listens to his favorite tv channels while I enjoy quiet!
susan  Nov 05, 2018
A
If the piano has left and right RCA audio jacks then it will work right out of the box. If you only have a 3.5mm headphone jack then you will need an adapter. Either way they should work great for you.
william  Nov 05, 2018
A
That would depend if your electric piano has a receiving port for the signal???
kathy  Nov 04, 2018
Q
Sennheiser RS 135-9 - Is it possible for others to watch (and hear) the TV when the headphones are in use by one individual?
steve  Oct 29, 2017

A
Yes
robert e.  Feb 15, 2020
A
We do this frequently with the tv
donald  Dec 09, 2018
A
I don't think so, I have mine connected to a Home Theatre set, and have to turn down the sound from the Amplifier/Receiver to use my head phones. Also, the head band on mine does not "fit" tight enough; and if you move your head a little too quick, they fall off!
dennis  Oct 30, 2017
A
Yes, volume directly from the television is independent of the headphones. The headphone wearer can adjust to suit his or her preferences, and the other people in the room can adjust the volume of the television -- one does not affect the other.
j christopher  Oct 30, 2017
A
I purchased these as a gift. They plug into the aux. Not sure if that would shut off the sound on all TVs. If you had more headsets/reievers they should function. An aux adapter would allow a wired. Headset to be connected. Hope that answers your quuestion.
kenneth  Oct 30, 2017
A
YES IT SURE IS.
clay  Oct 29, 2017
A
Absolutely. Most modern TVs have audio outputs (RCA type) that do not cut out the TV's speakers. The headphones have their own volume control.
dr. james  Oct 29, 2017
A
Yes just control the TV volume as normal.
charles r  Oct 29, 2017
A
Yes other viewers can still hear the t.v. while you use your headphones or you can mute the t.v. and just hear it through the headphones
mike  Oct 29, 2017

As my hearing goes, (old hearing), both were acceptable for me. It came down to convenience. If you chew gum get the over the ear cuz the in ear will work it's way out. Ear bone connected to the jaw bone, ha....
stephen  May 05, 2020
A
Over-the-ear phones completely cover your ears so as to seal out external noise and also to prevent sound leakage from inside. On the other hand, on-the-ear phones are smaller and rest on your ears.
