Our take on the Sennheiser RS 170

by Dave Bar
Sennheiser

Sennheiser's RS 170 wireless headphones make a great choice for movie and TV buffs. Their dynamic bass boost and virtual surround sound processing simulate the spaciousness and impact of a full home theater system. The comfortable, cushioned earcups sit around your ears to seal out external noise. And with a listening range of up to 260 feet, these 'phones let you roam freely throughout your living area — make popcorn during TV commercials or stay up for a late-night movie while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology
The RS 170s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows two or more people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family.

Convenient storage and easy setup
The multi-purpose transmitter keeps your headphones charged up and ready to go. It also doubles as a docking station, so you'll never forget where you put them. Wireless setup is easy — just connect the transmitter to a spare headphone jack or RCA audio output using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

From the review Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphones
"Sound quality was on a par with, or better than, many wired headphones I've used in the past, and they did a solid job getting my music or video audio track to where I was, with no transmission noise or dropouts. Setting [up the RS 170] was easy — a plug and play operation and the form factor of the headphones and their stand almost seemed to invite me to use them."

The Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphone system is made up of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 170) and a multi-purpose transmitter (TX 170) which also functions as an charging cradle and docking station. The RS 170 also features a Dynamic Bass Boost and Surround Sound simulation mode for your favorite music and movies. The RS 170 utilizes Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless audio transmission, offering a range of up to 260 feet, audiophile-grade sound, and reception to four optional pairs of Sennheiser Kleer headphones. The Sennheiser RS 170 offers automatic, interference-free pairing between the headphone and transmitter.

Kleer Wireless Transmission Technology: The Sennheiser RS 170 headphone system features the digital wireless audio transmission technology from Kleer (with a range up to 260'). Note: Kleer technology will not interfere with wireless networks or other 2.4 GHz devices.

Wireless Headphones: The RS 170's wireless headphones utilize audiophile-level transducer systems with powerful neodymium magnets for clear and detailed audio reproduction. The over-the-ear private earcups provide exceptional detailed, full-bodied sound reproduction. The around-the-ear design also prevents sound leakage. Leatherette earpads and an adjustable cushioned headband provide a comfortable fit. The headphones receive their wireless stereo audio signal from the included transmitter. The wireless headphones are powered by two supplied rechargeable NiMH "AAA" batteries (for up to 24 hrs). You can place the headphones on the multi-purpose transmitter to recharge the batteries (approx. 16 hrs).

Note: The headphones can operate off of "AAA" alkaline (1.5V) batteries or NiMH (1.2V/600mAh) rechargeable batteries.

Multi-Purpose Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output and then transmits the audio signal wirelessly to the RS 170's wireless headphones. The Multi-purpose transmitter also functions as a charging cradle and docking station. The transmitter operates off of standard house-hold AC current via the included AC power adapter.

Bass Boost & Surround Sound: The Sennheiser RS 170 features selectable Dynamic Bass Boost to deliver deep bass response. It also features selectable Surround Sound simulation for a private movie theater experience.

Multi-Receiver Mode: Up to 4 Sennheiser Kleer headphones can be connected to one transmitter so 4 people can listen to the same sound source.

Note: Additional Kleer headphones sold separately.

Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.

Just what I had hoped for. I can listen to movies and shows that have loud bass and not have to jump for the remote to turn the sound down. I don't have to wear hearing aides to hear the dialogue!
Pros:
Easy to set up and use. I can sit 20 ft. away in the den and not miss a sound.I can even go to the kichen for a refill and still hear what's going on.

none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding pair of headphones. They are light & comfortable. As many reviewers have stated, the controls are small & hard to use w/ the headphones on, but I use them for listening to music & rarely make any volume changes. The range on these headphones is pretty good. I use them primarily in my woodshop I built in a corner of my automotive shop- my automotive shop is metal building over 120 foot long & these will work all over my shop & in both of my offices. Every now & then they will drop out for a second when I move my head quickly, but it's not often enough to be annoying. They are connected to a TEAC UD-H01 DAC and I stream Pandora from my PC. The charging/base station works great and is very convenient.

This product delivers a fantastic sound, I used the surround sound. It is too bad that neither my wife or I could adjust the feel of the foam ear cups to maintain a comfortable fit. To us, they became very warm during a prolonged usage of 2 to 3 hours of continuous use.
Pros:
Great sound quality.
Cons:
The ear cups became too warm with prolonged use.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these 2 years ago so I could study on-line school in peace since my wife or kids want to be watching TV where I am. The wife was not excited at all to use them at first, now she thinks they are the best gift I've given her. I am ordering a second set of headphones today so we can watch movies in the bedroom at a volume I can hear without keeping the kids awake with explosions, car chases, or language.
Pros:
Long battery life (well over 5 hours usually), great sound, comfortable enough to fall asleep while wearing
Cons:
Could use a second docking station or extension of the main station for charging a second headphone set.

The only real disappointment was the sound quality: while it was clear/noise free, it lacks crisp treble and low freq or bass reproduction. i was expecting a rich FULL sound. the sound i hear is moderate quality
Pros:
Cordless, long range and clear sound at long range.
Cons:
audio reproduction not as rich as i had expected.

Great headphones!

Written By Russ, North Augusta, SC on Wednesday, March 05, 2014

I've used these headphones for about 3 years now. Used to have some Sony ones but they were garbage in their wireless capability. These produce superb sound quality you will not be disappointed with. Excellent range, never had them cut out or lose sound quality. You will not be disappointed. Unless you buy something else... :)
Pros:
Sound quality, works well every time, consistent rock solid. You can connect several headphones to 1 base transmitter!
Cons:
Cups get a little uncomfortable after hours, maybe they all do. Control buttons are way too small with no differentiating symbol to feel. Takes a while to get used to them so you can work them without taking the headset off. Getting extra headsets to work sometimes takes finesse with your timing in "hitting" the power button on the unit and the headsets can have a delay so you might think the 2nd headset is not working. Give it 10 seconds anyhoo before you try the power again.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to replace a less expensive set of wireless headphones and these fit the bill. Extremely good noise cancellation without any hiss. The headphones have a pretty good range, with little drop in sound quality. The surround sound and extra bass features provide numerous variations of sound that are fun to play with.

Pros:
Great style and comfort--excellent sound quality and range
Cons:
slightly more expensive, but worth it

The sound quality is very good so long as your are not hoping to listen to music with soft passages. These are squelched or masked by a buzzy noise. I was hoping to use these several rooms away from my stereo, however even 60ft away I find that there are spots were the rf signal drops out.
Pros:
OK for rock music or TV
Cons:
Not for music with quiet passages. Not reliable for use in rooms other than where the transmitter is located.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After 30 years in the construction and 10 years in the Sound business, I have some hearing loss. I bought these so I could hear and understand the TV with out damaging the hearing of others in the room. The sound is fantastic. Very comfortable. Even the commercials sound good. The range is great. I can walk all over the house and still hear the TV. The only negative is that the controls on the headset are difficult to operate with the headset on. A small price to pay for all the other benefits.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are really good headphones. I had to return them because I am 80 years old and needed phones that reduce bass sounds. The bass in today's phones and speakers block voices so I cannot understand half of what is being said. The phones, as I said, are great. I just cannot use them as I could not use BOSE headset for the same reason. Hookup to TV is easy and sound is good a long distance away. Good wireless headphones.
Pros:
Easy hookup Quality sound in other rooms of the house. As good as BOSE without wires.
Cons:
No good for older ears as bass sounds that are needed for good stereo blocks voice quality with movies or news.

Sennheiser RS 170

Written By Dave, Kalamazoo, MI on Monday, November 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used these about four times now, and may have almost figured them out. They aren't "plug and play" if you have an older TV, but as usual the Crutchfield techs (Allen) patiently worked me through the set up I needed. I'm hearing impaired and wanted to get something that would give me better speech understanding; my 5.1 surround system wouldn't even quite cut it with the volume cracked up to dish-rattling level. Initial efforts with these didn't really provide much improvement for my situation; dialogue was still difficult to understand. As a last resort, I tried to wear my hearing aids with these, hoping I wouldn't get a lot of feedback. Short version: no hearing aid feedback and vastly improved speech recognition. The surround sound aspect of these works really well, the bass enhancement okay. The instructions are sort of sketchy concerning the available adjustments, but that's why I wouldn't consider getting these from anyone other than Crutchfield. They are always there for you. I'm not sorry I bought them. A casual listening experience (which most people want) is a lot different than trying to overcome a problem. At the risk of preaching, protect your hearing folks. When it's gone it's gone for good. It's a life changer, and not in a good way. Crutchfield was the only company that supplied me with intelligent information and recommendations. Not even my audiologist could do that. I'll never buy anything from anyone other than them. Crutchfield is priceless.
Pros:
Comfortable, effective, quality construction.
Cons:
Instructions aren't comprehensive enough. Headset controls are difficult to use,

Works great after some troubleshooting

Written By JPW, Texas on Sunday, July 07, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these for my daughter's birthday. We have 3 pairs of corded Sennheiser headphones in the house so that's the only brand I looked at for wireless. She wanted wireless because she often listens to her TV and iPod while doing activities in her room and around the house. Difficult to do with corded headphones.

Had I reviewed these the first day it would have been one star. The instructions provided for hooking them up and getting started are just pictures. They also provide instructions via a PDF file on a disk that's included. I don't understand why they don't include printed instructions when they do provide a safety book that's in hundreds of languages and hundreds of pages long (just a slight exaggeration here).

We got them working by following the pictures. At first my daughter was happy with them. Ten minutes later she said the sound keeps cutting out. She was watching a TV show and periodically the sound would just stop. I read through the entire manual online and also searched the web for this issue. The key thing I found is that you need to turn the volume up on your source at least to 50% to avoid this problem. Then use the volume control on the headphones to reduce the volume you hear. Apparently the unit shuts off momentarily if it doesn't detect any sound so by turning it up you avoid this problem.

Now they work great. This is a key instruction that Sennheiser should make more clear. I'm sure it's a problem others have based on other reviews on the web.
Pros:
Great sound. Comfortable. Convenient. Look nice. Great range; my daughter is able to even go outside and hear her music.
Cons:
Instructions included are not clear enough. Even the troubleshooting section of the instructions don't list source volume too low as a possible cause for sound drop outs. I hope this review helps others who buy these headphones to avoid this problem. They really are great headphones once you get past this problem.

Good quality

Overall a good headset. Battery life is good. Setup easy.
Pros:
Great sound. Good bass when boost is on.
Cons:
On/Off button on headset hard to find when needed since it's so close to vol buttons. Easy to turn off when wanting to adjust volume. Needs a auto on/off feature like Sony does w/ micro switch in headband. It knows when it's on your head.

Sennheiser RS 170 Wireless Headphones

Written By John S., Westminster, MD on Friday, March 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The RS 170 is an excellent product. Used with a TV the speech is greatly improved and the music is very good. The unit is also very comfortable and of good quality. The only downside, as stated in some other reviews, is that the volume and mute buttons are impossible to use without removing the headphones. Having done that, the functions are easy to use.
Pros:
Excellent product.
Cons:
Controls difficult to use without removing the headphones.

Same ol same ol

Written By Funkyunkie, Manhattan kansas on Sunday, February 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am hard of hearing and i purchased wireless headphones to help me hear speech on my TV. These headphones are the second pair I have purcheaed, the first ones were the 120, they worked well enough but brok in 6 months. I went ahead and purchased the 170's as I did not want to repeat the problem I had with the 120's. Though the 170's sound much better, they still have the same design weakness as the 120's (cheap plastic connectors holding the headphones on the headband). I would have thought for $280 they would have used metal at least somewhere in the construction. The use of plastic connectors at a majior stress point is stupid, anyone who tries to spread out the headphones wider is asking for a broken product. I know now that if I treat these like they are made of glass, they should last for a few years (hopefully). It is a shame when Sennheiser has such a very good product, and then screws it up by making it very cheaply.
Pros:
Excellent sound quality these makes it easy to understand recorded voices, ease of use, very comfortable fit, excellent range.
Cons:
Very cheap plastic construction. Easy to snap off (break) the earphone when adjusting. Awkward placement of controls on the earpiece, you have to remove headphones completely to make adjustments to the sound output.

Alright Headphones

Written By Jim L, Yarmouth, ME on Sunday, January 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using these for a little over a year now. I bought them to replace my 900 mhz headset, which I was very happy with for many years. I agree with all the comments on having to take headset off to press buttons. I find the surrond sound button ineffective and the bass button doesnt do a whole lot. I use these for movie listening late at night. I find when it comes to action movies the speakers get distorted at a medium volume level...kind of dissapointing for what they cost. Would not recommend to a friend.
Pros:
Comfort, charging, distance
Cons:
speaker quality, operating buttons while wearing

Problem Solved

Written By Judy A, Hamilton, Mi. 49419 on Saturday, December 22, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Absolutely wonderful. Gift for my husband who doesn't hear very well and was always missing what was being said during a movie or tv program. I'm a grateful wife who hears very well and is now never asked what was said and winds up missing parts of the program to explain to my husband what he missed. These wonderful head phones were actually a gift for both of us. People I talked to at Crutshfield were very kind and helpful.
Pros:
Husband can turn sound up as loud as he wants and I can't hear a thing from the earphones. I can now have the tv at a reasonable sound to suit me.
Cons:
So far no negatives at all.

Sennheiser RS 170

Written By springcanyon, Twisp, WA on Friday, December 07, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With just a little more thought, a good headset could have been a great headset. The volume controls and on/off controls are located in close proximity. That makes it very difficult to adjust the sound level by feel. Putting the on/off switch right between the up/down volume controls was a poor choice. This design could have been better.

Sennheiser RS 170

Written By Steve, Benton, AR on Thursday, August 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reviewed many wireless sets of headphones from $100 to $600. I thought I would give the Sennheiser RS 170 a chance. After all I could send them back if I didn't like them. My wife goes to bed early so I thought I would used the headphones then. Well, I wear them all the time. The bass and surround sound is beyond excellent. Comfort, style, and range are too. This is the first Sennheiser product I have bought and I'm very happy.
Pros:
Excellent sound reproduction Great reception range Excellent Bass and Surround Very comfortable even on extended wearing of headphones
Cons:
The only improvement I would like is better tactical feel for the side buttons.

RS-170 Sound Great but with Some Limitations

Written By LR, SD on Friday, July 13, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far they have performed flawlessly and it wasn't to difficult to get two sets of headphones to sync to the transmitter. The big test is yet to come, when we move them into the RV for the trip to Kansas Speedway and the NASCAR race.
Pros:
Sounds good and I think the Bass Boost and the Surround added that extra touch.
Cons:
The Power and Volume switches do leave something to be desired. Like others have stated, you almost need to take them off to make sure you are pushing the right buttons.

This is my third try with this unit. The first failed in the stereo mode sound just dropped out, second unit sound dropped out on one side. This unit so far has worked well except that I am experiencing a cutting out when it is first powered up as though it were going through a seeking mode. I'm hoping the unit continues to work.
Pros:
Nice when it starts working
Cons:
Being as this is my third such unit makes me wonder about quality

Class-leading wireless sound with just a few limitations

Written By Ed, Albany, NY on Saturday, April 14, 2012

I've been using the Sennheiser RS 170 wireless headphones for over 18 months now, and while it took me a short while to fall in love with them, today they're the home theater accessory that I simply cannot live without. They provide clean, enveloping sound when listening to music or movies, with wire-free convenience to boot!

The quality of the RS 170's wireless signal needs to be heard to be believed. Background noise and hiss is all but nonexistent, and I was able to get 75 feet of distance between myself and the transmitter base station before experiencing any dropouts. Battery life is excellent and the charging cradle makes recharging easy and convenient.

It should be stated that while the RS 170 headphones are said to feature a surround enhancement mode, this isn't going to replace an existing 5.1 home theater system nor does it come close to the performance of proprietary technologies like SRS or Dolby Headphone. I found that it was far less fatiguing to turn this feature off, even when watching surround sound-heavy action movies. Dialogue, sound effects and ambient were so much clearer and better defined with regular stereo listening.

My only real disappointment with the RS 170s are their limited connectivity options. I would have loved to have seen a digital input and integrated Dolby Digital/DTS decoding at this price. Still, it's hard to argue with wireless sound that's this clean. I highly recommend them.
Pros:
- Outstanding sound quality - Clean wireless signal - Great range (over 75 feet indoors) - Good battery longevity with convenient recharging
Cons:
- Limited connectivity options - Bass boost muddies sound quality - Surround sound feature not particularly effective - No native surround decoding (DD or DTS)

RS170 - Stunning Wireless Performance

Written By AndyH, Clovis, CA on Saturday, January 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having tried digital wireless stereo headphones several years ago (and they weren't inexpensive!), and not being impressed then, I was a little nervous spending a lot of money to see if technology has improved much since then. Wow, was I amazed at the improvement! I have several wired Sennheiser headphones, and I am glad I tried their wireless set. The sound blew me away, and this is even in a home environment with a lot of wireless devices and an 802.11 wireless netork all of which operate on the same frequency as the headphones. No interference, no dropouts, just pure amazing sound - hard to distinguish from wired headphones for some listening material such as the TV. I highly recommend this product; it's hard to imaging getting any better than this without spending a LOT more money. Note: My LG TV does not have RCA audio out connectors, so I use the optical digital output from the TV and use a GefenTV Digital Audio Decoder (very small and discrete) to convert to connect them and it works flawlessly.
Pros:
Sound, build quality, comfort, ease of use, styling
Cons:
None

WOW! The sound is amazing! I had no idea of what I was missing. The clarity and
detail the RS 170's provide is awesome! I can hear every detail from music and TV
programs. The wireless works well as there is absolutely zero hiss or humming. The
unexpected bonus with these headphones is that I can walk all around the house and
never miss anything from whatever source I'm listening to. The headphones are
comfortable and reduce outside sound well. Thank you to the Crutchfield staff for

Great for Workouts

Written By Bill R, New York on Sunday, February 13, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these headphones to replace an old pair of headphones that I use when
working out in the morning. For this, the ear cups are a plus, it helps block
out the noise of the exercise equipment. I have it set up so that I can listen
to the news or morning shows as I work out, and I turn the TV volume down so I
don't disturb others in the house - plus the ear cups don't block all of the
sound, so it's odd to hear the sound in the background also.
These are much better than my old pair, which was analog. On that pair,
sometimes the signal would drift, and I'd have to readjust and tune in the
signal. Being digital that's not an issue here. Sound quality is great, and
I'm sure they would be great for music also.
One thing I learned from using my old pair; after exercising I wipe off the ear
cups and headset with a towel. Wipe off the ear cups gently and I don't even
try to wipe off the thin fabric that covers the "speaker" part, as that easily
tore on my old set. When you hang these, they will dry out quickly anyway.

Instructions manual is on CD supplied, but you can also download it previously to receipt of headphones from Crutchfield on "Download owner's manual" or from Sennheiser website.
Sound is great for wireless phones, works good around the house with minimal or no notable distortion.
It takes a while to charge it the first time (+24 hours) but subsequent charges take less time (less than 8 hours).
Lightweight headphones so you will not feel then. Bass and surround are great.
Little pricey but a good purchase.

Sennheiser RS 170

Written By Denny, Titusville, FL on Sunday, February 21, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first thing that I do when I get a new product is read the operation manual. This Sennheiser product doesn't have one. They include a CD instead. My PC wouldn't read the CD. Apparently this has something to do with auto start being disabled. I have never had this problem before. Manual starting of a DVD/CD is usually just a click. I found the manual online at Sennheiser's website. Subsequent check of my other PC's with auto start indicated that the CD would load with auto start. The RS170 requires that you assemble the power supply with the correct plug insert depending on which country you live in. You get four choices. Why send me four plug inserts but no printed manual? Further inspection of the headphones/charging unit/control module left me under whelmed. I did not install the product. Reviews of the RS170 on other websites indicate that it sounds great. That is why I ordered it plus I have had good luck with other Sennheiser headphones. My concern is not the quality of the sound; it is with how long will it last. I do not believe the RS170 is worth the price. It has been returned. I will let others test the longevity of the product.

  • Yes. Anything with a headphone jack. I use this set to listen to iHeart Radio on both my iPhone 5 and iPad Air. [ ROBERT L   Feb 02, 2014 ]
  • Not directlly. The headphone charger is also the transmitter. If the transmitter is plugged into the audio outs on the iPads etc the signal is transmitted out all over the house. It is very effective and the quality is outstanding. This works easily, however If you leave your house this would be rather awkward as the transmitter must be plugged into an a.c. power source. I give the audio quality of these phones at 5 stars. The RS 170 is sturdy, solid, and very comfortable. In the picture shown the headphones are in the position of being charged. So the answer to the question is that the headphones are completely wireless. and are never connected to anything. Any source will be heard in the phones if the sources are directly connected to the transmitter charger' [ ROGER L   Feb 02, 2014 ]
  • Hi Steve, Yes you can use the headphones with either an iPad or iPhone. Use a mini stereo cable (1/8") going from headphone base to your Apple device. Mark [ Mark   Feb 02, 2014 ]
