Our take on the Sennheiser RS 180

by Kristen Schaub
Sennheiser

Great headphone sound goes wireless

Sennheiser's RS 180 wireless headphones let you enjoy superb sound that won't disturb family members or housemates. Advanced "Open-Aire" speaker technology delivers clear, natural-sounding detail, while the Automatic Level Control smooths out variances in volume — quiet dialog is easier to hear, and loud commercials and explosions are kept in check. The luxurious velour earpads sit around your ears to seal out external noise. And with a listening range of up to 320 feet, you can roam freely throughout your living area — make popcorn during TV commercials, look through a photo album in another room, or stay up for a late-night listening session while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology

The RS 180s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows up to four people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family. (Add-on HDR 180 headsets available separately.)

Never misplace your headphones with the multi-purpose transmitter

The multi-purpose transmitter keeps your headphones charged up and ready to go. It also doubles as a docking station, so you'll never forget where you put them. Wireless setup is easy — just connect the transmitter to a spare headphone jack or RCA audio output using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser RS 180 RF stereo hi-fi wireless headphone system offers transparent and balanced sound imaging with excellent bass response making it ideal for hi-fi, home cinema, and TV use. The Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphone system is made up of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 180) and a multi-purpose transmitter (TX 180) which also functions as an charging cradle and docking station. The RS 180 features Automatic Level Control which compensates for variances in the volume of program material to enhance speech intelligibility. The RS 180 utilizes Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless audio transmission, offering a range of up to 320 feet, audiophile-grade sound, and reception to four optional pairs of Sennheiser Kleer headphones. The Sennheiser RS 180 offers automatic, interference-free pairing between the headphone and transmitter.

Kleer Wireless Transmission Technology: The Sennheiser RS 180 headphone system features the digital wireless audio transmission technology from Kleer (with a range up to 320'). Kleer technology transmits uncompressed audio over a robust 2.4 GHz digital link (2.4-2.8GHz), enabling you to enjoy your music without the hassle of cables. Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless transmission delivers CD-quality sound.

Note: Kleer technology will not interfere with wireless networks or other 2.4 GHz devices.

Wireless Headphones: The RS 180's wireless headphones utilizes an Open-Air speaker system that mimics the acoustic properties of hi-fi speakers for a truly immersing, hyper-real sound quality. The Open-Air speaker system delivers the most natural sounding private wireless audio experience possible. The over-the-ear design also prevents sound leakage. Velour earpads and an adjustable cushioned headband provide a comfortable fit. The headphones receive their wireless stereo audio signal from the included transmitter. The wireless headphones are powered by two supplied rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries (for up to 24 hrs). You can place the headphones on the multi-purpose transmitter to recharge the batteries (approx. 16 hrs).

Note: The headphones can operate off of AAA alkaline (1.5V) batteries or NiMH (1.2V/600mAh) rechargeable batteries.

Multi-Purpose Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output and then transmits the audio signal wirelessly to the RS 180's wireless headphones. The Multi-purpose transmitter also functions as a charging cradle and docking station. The transmitter operates off of standard house-hold AC current via the included AC power adapter.

Automatic Level Control: Automatic Level Control (ALC) automatically compensates for variances in program material volume for optimum speech intelligibility at all times.

Multi-Receiver Mode: Up to 4 Sennheiser Kleer headphones can be connected to one transmitter so 4 people can listen to the same sound source.

Note: Additional Kleer headphones sold separately (item number 143HDR180).

I purchase these headphones for mu husbands birthday. All I can say is that he is truly amazed. Our son in law has a similar pair and my husband had spoken about how great the sound reduction was. He was very happy to receive them and has told numerous people whom have already purchased them from you.

Sennheiser RS 180

Written By ronnie d., longview, tx on Saturday, August 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love these wireless headphones in every way. My only complaint is I wish I could use them on my stereo while still playing the stereo at a comfortable level for others. I have an Onkyo receiver with Bose speakers for my home stereo system and my poor hearing causes me to want to listern to the system louder than others. I had hoped that these wireless headphones would allow me to listen to music or a movie at a different volume than others, but the only way I could connect the headphones to my receiver was via the headphone jack which shuts down the stereo speakers. Hence the headphones work great when I listen to a movie alone, but do not work for their intended purpose. The clarity of voice is so good, I use them all the time rather than the normal stereo speakers as long as I am alone.

Better than the RS220s

Written By Meade, Charlottesville, VA on Tuesday, April 29, 2014

I originally purchased the Sennheiser flagship wireless earphones (RS-220s) and was impressed by their build quality, the controls, their comfort, and the sturdy attractive design. Unfortunately, the RS-220s use an awful transmitter than cuts out & pops/hisses about every 20 seconds. For $500 that is unacceptable. So, I unhappily downgraded to the RS-180s. In short, these sound just as good as the 220s and never cut out or pop/hiss. They are well made but certainly a step down from the RS-220s. Overall I'm very happy with them and look forward to years of use. If Sennheiser ever fixes their 220s, maybe I'll give them another look, but until that time, the RS-180s are as nice a wireless headphone as you can buy.
Pros:
-Great sound quality -Very rare for audio to drop out -Good range -Very comfortable
Cons:
-Button layout is horrendous. It will take quite a bit of practice before you can adjust the volume without accidentally turning them off -Quality 'feel' is inferior to the RS-220s for both the headphones and the base

Very good sound reproduction

Written By Music Lover, N E GA on Saturday, February 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is very good, but I haven't worn headsets for years, so nothing to really compare them to. I listen to music several hours a day, I listen for certain instruments and sounds. The Sennheiser 180 s miss very little compared to my speakers...bass has a different sound but I would expect that..These ear phones against 3800 dollar speakers...It s great to be able enjoy my porch swing and my music at the same time.. well worth the money. If you buy, I recommend the attenuation switch be set to no compression, my preference.
Pros:
Easy set up, mobility is great, good sound, and packed by Crutchfield.
Cons:
The ear pads are hot to my ears, I am a hot natured person. I've solved the problem with cloth pad covers. The markings on the headset could be raised a little more making it easier to identify the controls by touch.. that would be it....

Great product

Written By Catherine, Wilmington, DE on Sunday, January 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had the RS 180 wireless headphones now for several weeks. Have a severe loss of hearing in my left ear and a small loss in my right ear. I have been able to adjust the volume so that I am now able to hear with both ears. Music if fantastic and I was surprised to be able to really hear so much. The staff was wonderful in helping us set up the equipment. Not much to it but enough that we had to call and got expert assistance in the set up. I am extremely pleased with my wireless headphones.
Pros:
You can adjust volume to what is right for you or for each of your ears individually. No wires to get tangled up in. Headphones are comfortable.
Cons:
Have to remove headphones if I want to make a change in volume. Since I am the only one using them that is really not a problem.

Seinheiser RS180 - Great Product

Written By George, Rochester, NY on Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones work great. I have a hearing problem especially with frequencies around the female voice. I would have the TV volumn so load it would drive my wife crazy.

With these I turn the speaker volume off, remove my hearing and can hear exceptionally well with RS180's.

Only a few programs with extremely noisy background noise are a problem.

These work for me 95+% of the time.

Love EM!
Pros:
Great sound Easy to use Good value for the $$
Cons:
None that I have found

Wireless 180

Written By Jim, Nipomo, Caliofornia on Sunday, August 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use the set when on the treadmill and sound comes through without interference. It comes through outside on the patio and throughout the house. I haven't measured whether I get 300 or not but don't need that distance. The sound quality is good but could be a little better. The earpiece could also be a little more comfortable. All in all its a good set.

I have had other wireless headphones. This time I decided to spend more money to an upgrade. After reading many reviews I decided to try these. They are everything I expected them to be. I really enjoy the lack of interference. The comfort level is excellent and my, the high and low volume are smoothed our and my wife sleeps well while I am enjoying late night TV. Great product that is worth the extra $$$.
Pros:

Sennheiser RS 180

Written By Anonymous, Henderson NV on Monday, May 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For us with marginal hearing this sytem is top notch. The sound quality is exactly what we were looking for. Unfortunately the engineers did not see fit to consider that people who are hard of hearing, many times are also getting up there in age and don't need the frustration of Multi Function swithches. Maybe a dollar more and they could have made the headset perfect!
Pros:
Excellent sound quality.

Headphones for the home

Written By Great, reliable, surprisingly deep bass, Parker CO on Thursday, March 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start by saying, they are wireless. For wireless sound, this is a phenomenal product. Very nice highs, and lows met. I hear 60% more sound over the television (Samsung ES8000 60" LED HDTV). Dramatically improved over the tv speakers. The only reason for the 4 star is I OWN the RS 220s - FREAKING AMAZING SOUND. The RS 220s cost a tidy sum though by comparison. This is an easy late night tv watching pick up, or to keep the house noise down. Very comfortable too unlike other brands. Sennheiser makes them light, easy to wear, easy to recharge.
Pros:
Comfort and pricing are both exceptional.
Cons:
Just a few dropouts once in awhile.

Incredible Headphones

Written By David K, Saint Petersburg, FL on Sunday, February 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What an incredible headset. I wear hearing aids and when I had an older model of the same headset, the feedback could only be avoided if I wore the headset over my hearing aids rather than my ears. Looked stupid, felt stupid and didn't work all that well. This one...wow, no feed back, wear them right over my ears with the hearing aids on and they work GREAT.
Pros:
Can watch TV or listen to music with my volume setting not my wife's.
Cons:
well the only con I can think of is the price, but I'd pay even more if it were more expensive. I love the quality of the sound.

Originally ordered the RS 170. The vinyl ear pads get hot in winter, I can imagine what they fell like in summer. The 170 is closed and I like the open back of the 180. Comfort is unparalleled with the velour earpads. Can wear for hours and hours. Awesome sound. Worth every penny

G-Rrrrrrrrrreat!

Written By ben s, winston salem nc on Wednesday, January 02, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 2nd set of Sennheiser RS headphones. My previous pair the 120's were discontinued just a few years ago. the difference between those and these new 180's is staggering. Nothing but improvement from volume and balence button locations to the super extended clear sound range to the comfort and extended bass response. a minor incovenence is having to let the phones and base resync before each use but after a week of use that becomes less importent and just a thing to watch as the blue lights flash fastly and then sync into a slow togetherness of harmony.
Pros:
range of signal pickup ability to hear others speak to you even at the highest volume levels softness and breathability of speaker surrounds
Cons:
inability to completely block out surrounding close-by noise

Sennheisser RS 180

Written By Bob, Mineola, NY on Friday, December 28, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent headphones! Very comfortable with good sound, wireless range, comfort and battery life. As other reviewers commented there are some minor cons, however the pros make up for it. The freedom to walk around my home listening to my choice of music, movie, etc at an enjoyable sound level without disturbing anyone else (late night) is great.
Pros:
Great sound quality with excellent spacial sound. I've yet to run the batteries out with regular charging (I've used them up to 8 hrs). The range is very good but I've found it is somewhat reliant on signal strength to the receiver. FM does not have the range that a digital source or satellite radio (with rooftop antenna). The headset does not get static, it merely goes silent until the signal strength is sufficient. Easy to set up and operate. Charges easily.
Cons:
The buttons are not easy to distinguish, very close together. The flashing green light when the headset is active can be annoying if wearing them in bed in a dark room. It's not noticeable during normal movie use, etc. The volume could have a slightly lower minimum for wear when going to sleep, just a notch too loud.

these are not noise cancelling headphones(that's why the low noise cancelling rating), and all head phones look geeky, they are uncool
Pros:
these head phones sound better with new school 5.1 and 7.1 recorded music than 2 channel huge stereo speakers (tweeter, midrange, woofer)
Cons:
old school music that was recorded using a 2 channel stereo e.g. Van Valen sounds better on my 2 channel stereo speakers.

RS 180

Written By Ron G, Cedar Bayou, Tx on Saturday, July 14, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I want to commend my Crutchfield Contact Lee on his excellent handling of my questions and order. The RS 180 has fantastic sound qualities. The only shortcoming is in the volume and on/off switch for the headset. I have not been able to develop a feel for identifying them by touch. If Sennheiser would add a mute button for muting TV advertisement that would probably be the button I would use most of the time. The buttons (other than on/off) would seldom be used. Overall an outstanding buy.
Pros:
Great sound, comfortable, great range
Cons:
Volume buttons on headset too close to the on/off button, could use a mute button

Sennheiser RS180-Good but not perfect

Written By HaroldMc, Austin, TX on Monday, April 23, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The quality of sound is great & the fit comfortable, but my wife tells me that it bleeds sound that she can hear when I turn the volume up. I have to be careful to keep it below a certain level when she's sitting next to me, or she gets an annoying secondary sound feed from my headphones.
Pros:
Great Sound. Comfortable fit.
Cons:
Sound bleeds to adjacent viewers.

Great wireless headphones

Written By Chuck58, Maryland on Monday, April 02, 2012

The RS 180 headphones are very comfortable and have very good sound range. Best part is not being tied to a cord. Walk around your home and never lose the music. Avoid disturbing other family members if it is late at night and you want o lsten to some music. The charging station is very appealing. Just position the headphones over the charger and contacts on the underside of the headset connect to the base station. I have yet to have the batteriies run out with several hours of listening. These are not noise eliminating headphones so don't think that if someone is playing a tv loudly you won't be able to Hera it. No volume adjustment on the headphones. Not a big deal, just adjust the source volume. I guess it could be an issue if you were going to buy extra headsets and other people wanted to listen at different volumes
Pros:
Light weight. Wireless. Good sound reproduction
Cons:
Limited adjustments on headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

product came well packaged and protected from damage. pretty easy to set up, headset fits well on different size heads. buttons tricky on headset figure out. but easy to adjust. sound is very good and does go a long way, even outside at least 80 ft away without breaking up or losing sound quality.
Pros:
easy set up; comfortable to wear, not to heavy, adjustable head strap. good quality sound
Cons:
headset button confirguration tricky to figure out- patience but definetly possible; when using mutiple audio and video components in a theater system can be frustrating to figure where the audio leads have to go to get sound from the headsett.

originally ordered the rs170. on sale, but out of stock. got a call a month later to say they are stillout of stock for a few months, but that crutchfield would substitute a better set(rs180)for the same sale price(great customer service)they said that it would ship the next day(weds.). i had it in my hands on friday, by 11:00a.m.(awsome) this set was to replace a "as seen on tv" set that i had for years that had ok sound, but recieved a lot of background noise, and had a very limited line of site range(couldnt leave the room, or move more than 6' side to side).i went to a "box retailer" in town who didnt carry this brand in stock but sold me a pair that "was just as good".i returned them the very next day. they popped, hissed, and had poor sound. the rs180 will recieve without any noise, or static, throughout my entire house, basement & garage. these are excellent- well worth the higher price. very happy with these.
Pros:
comfortable, great sound,long range
Cons:
headset controls poorly designed owners manual/cd poorly written

the Sennheiser RS 180 Wireless headphone is everything it says it is. It is easy to hook up, the sound is truly amazing, very clear with stereo. The distance it reaches is unbelievable,My TV is in the basement and I will go upstairs to the kitchen and never miss anything. The headphone are will made and confront-able. The only short coming is they could have separated the on and off switch from the volume controls.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently moved into a condo from a large single-family home. I had two concerns. One being reducing my enjoyment of movies and music that a cranked up loud enough to blast the stucco off my exterior walls. That concern has been eliminated. My Sennheiser RS180s are everything I expected and more. The sound is crisp, clear and bold. In fact, I can hear clearly everywhere while walking around the condo including the patio and downstairs garage. They're light, easy to use and synced perfectly with the video. Pay the money and get the best.
Pros:
Clear, crisp and bold. acoustics. Light weight. Long range.
Cons:

Instructions are inadequate. Thankfully, Crutchfield's service department researched the problem. Their staff explained how sync multiple headphones and gave me a link to a YouTube video. Headphones now work in multiple headphone mode and the sound and comfort is great.
Pros:

Cons:

Very easy setup. Didn't work very good using the RCA pre-out on my receiver. However they were great using the headphone jack. This also permits you to adjust sound level using receiver or remote. Only had these for 1 day so I will have better idea after about a week.
Pros:
So far music is great and I think understanding what people are saying on TV shows and movies will be very good. Works great usuin headphone jack on receiver.
Cons:
Didn't work very well using RCA outputs from pre-out of my Onkyo receiver.

The headphones worked perfectly immediately upon completing the connection. They are a great assist in understanding TV shows given my partial loss of hearing and comprehension. I'm truly satisfied with the headphones and the price I paid for them. With respect to the price, I received a competitor's email ad yesterday offering the headphones for $100.00 more than Crutchfield's price.

Thanks!

The sound is fabulous, set-up a little confusing but well worth it. Biggest gripe to Manufacturer is please make the headset controls more easily tactile recognized so adjustments to volume, etc. can be made with the headset on one's ears. Can't tell which contol button is which while wearing the device.

Soo satisfied. I had paid over $600 in fines 'cause of a new neighbor. Although I have lived here a very long time and never had complaints this "neighbor" filed many complaints so the cops listened to her. Just think - with those fines I could have purchased two more headphones. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy these head phones. I tune out the world and listen to my music - from bluegrass to opera and everything in between. I move all over the three floors of my home and the music travels with me. Simply awesome as are Paul and Lefty. Come on, gals, who can tolerate this bothersome house work w/o music?

Exceptional Headphones

Written By Holzkopf, Cadillac, MI on Tuesday, November 08, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is absolutely phenomenal. Being a senior citizen, with decreased hearing capabilities, I really did not realize just how much dialog I was missing from todays TV shows, even with the volume turned way higher than my wife likes. The headset is very comfortable and natural feeling. The "open-aire" design allows you to hear ambient conversation, unless your headset volume is cranked way up, while still enjoying the enhanced clarity these headphones produce. The "ALS" option enhances the sound more than I ever expected. Todays TV shows introduce far to much background noise or music which often muffles the dialog. These headphones do an excellent job of restoring that missing dialog. I am using these headphones connected to a Toshiba Regza HD television.
Pros:
Being a long time user of Sennheiser's noise canceling headphones, I was quite sure I could depend on the excellent Sennheiser quality for this set of wireless headphones. I was not disappointed in the least with these headphones. They far exceed my expectations.
Cons:
If I must pick any negative attribute, I would agree with some other reviewers that the control buttons are a bit of a challenge to get used to. It's a good thing that they do not have to be accessed very frequently.

Good Quality Headphones

Written By Tom, New Mexico on Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using these headphones with my Panasonic HDTV. Sound is clear, with no hiss or other noises. Sound quality is excellent. Headphones are comfortable, and can be worn for an extended period. The Automatic Level Control maintains the audio level you set, and enhances the speech, so no more missed dialog when the actors mumble. Being able to charge the headphone batteries by placing the headphones onto the transmitter stand is very nice.

The manual says that the orange "charging" light will go out when the batteries are fully charged. Well, after 6 days, the light is still on. Everything seems to work OK, so it isn't a problem. The volume, balance, and mute controls are located on the right ear headphone, near the bottom, and it is difficult to distinguish them with your fingertips. Making the buttons a bit more distinct would help. I have several times changed the R/L balance when I was intending to either mute the headphones during commercials, or change the volume level. When you remove the headphones from the transmitter stand, you must turn on the power, turn on the ALC, and then turn on the headphones every time. It would be nice if the ALC setting was remembered, and if removing the headphones from the stand automatically turned everything on.

Written By LarryB, New Bern, NC on Thursday, April 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the all of the other reviewers that loved this headset. None of the crackle, hiss, or pop of earlier Sennheisers or my Sony. I also find the range spec overstated. Straight line is meaningless as all houses have walls and doors. I am getting about 50 feet before some cutout. For TV viewing that is no issue for Pandora on the deck, I need to try something different. The battery charging light stayed on much longer than expected but crutchfield tech support told me that would be the case for the first few charges and, sure enough, it is working fine now. Having said all of this, the sound is extraordinary and worth the money.

Comparing to a 3 year old Sennheiser Wireless Model

Written By Dan B., York, PA on Friday, April 22, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the RS- 180 set to replace a 3 year old Sennheiser Wireless Headset. The old headset had a constant background hiss, the range was limited to one room, and sound would drop out easily. Lastly, the headset was not comfortable and didn't allow your ears to "breathe".

So, how does the new set hold up? VERY well. All of those issues are gone: NO background noise, the range covers my entire home (1500 sq ft), no sound dropout. The sound is very accurate and the headset is much more comfortable. An added bonus allows you to add up to 4 other headsets to this system.

The only downside to the design (and this is huge) is the horrible button layout on the headset unit. The buttons are tiny, all grouped together, and placed in an illogical order (the on/off power button is located in between the up and down volume buttons!!!). To make things worse, all of the buttons are located on the headset where a person would naturally place their hands in order to pick up the headset to put them on. This is very frustating in that you have to learn how to NOT touch them when putting these on so as to not mess things up. If you want to adjust settings during playback, without taking them off, good luck.

Bottom line: excellent sound transmission and reception, very comfortable to wear, excellent features. However, the poor button layout on the headset could actually be the deal breaker for a system that, otherwise, sounds fantastic.

We purchased these because of the reviews and we could not be more satisfied. No more fighting over the TV volume while watching movies and TV. Since we moved into an apt. it is an adjustment to noise level. So no more fighting, these fit comfortably and truly are worth every penny. I think when it comes to headphones you need to get high quality. When you're not using them, they easily store and charge. These conveniences, along with the high quality of the headphones, make this a perfect purchase. I did alot of research beforehand, and hands down, these are the best. And you can't forget the Cruchfield quality for peace of mind.

Santa (aka my wife..) gave me these headphones for Christmas. I'm wondering how we ever stayed married without them, especially since I'm an early riser and she is a night owl. We can now enjoy our favorite programs when the other is blissfully asleep without causing a disturbance, and without missing a whisper of what is being said during the program. Exceptional sound quality and very comfortable to wear for extended periods. I like them so much, I bought a second pair for the basement.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

WOW, if I could give them a 10, I would. I'm getting a little hard of hearing but not ready for a hearing aid though my daughters might disagree. Watching TV I have to turn the volume up beyond what my wife finds comfortable for her and still I might miss some of the dialog. With these headphones I CAN hear every word that is said and even any background noise that may accompany a scene. Everything comes in crystal clear. I have no problems with the volume controls as once set, there's no reason to change. I could not connect the headphone transmitter to my TV as it only has a jack for digital audio output but I was able to tap directly off my satellite receiver box without a problem. These headphones may be a bit pricey but well worth it. Color me happy.

Good sound quality but two complaints.

The on/off and +/- volume controls are badly designed. It's hard to tell which is which by feeling. The buttons should be made much more distinct.

The claimed 300' of range is way off. I don't get much more than 50' with clear line of sight transmission.

Best wireless so far - More progress needed.

Written By Houckster, Clarkston, GA on Thursday, July 29, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The RS 180 is the best wireless headphone I am aware of so far. And if you are using it to watch broadcast entertainment, most likely they will be entirely satisfactory. For more critical listening situations, there is still much progress to be made.

I did my listening tests comparing the RS 180 to a well-used Sennheiser HD600 w/Cardas aftermarket cable which I rate as a higher middle segment headphone. I listened to several types of music. The general conclusion I reached is that either the Kleer system probably has some growing up to do or the headphones just can't deliver the quality of sound that a wired headphone can. My guess is that the Kleer system doesn't yet have the resolution (I'm definitely guessing here.) to completely do justice to more complex music such as the da Vinci Code soundtrack and some classical music. There were instances of some notable distortion that were not there or much less there with the HD600s.

In other cases, the headphones were clearly lacking in dynamics, soundstaging and resolution compared to the HD600s though in fairness, the HD600 phones cost $200 more than the RS 180 system.

I am hopeful that the Kleer system will evolve over time addressing the weaknesses in the sound of the RS 180 system I attribute to it. Once that happens and Sennheiser produces a line of high end headphones compatible with the Kleer system, wireless may become the preeminent standard.

2nd Sennheiser Wireless Headphones

Written By Dr. J, Kingsville, TX on Sunday, June 13, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second set of Sennheiser wirless headphones I've owned. Just like the first set the model RS180 is a great performer. I use my headphones for late night TV viewing so as not to disturb my wife or kids. The sound quality is superb. No static or background hiss. Great range around my house. Fit and comfort are excellent. My only complaint is the volume up and down and power buttons are very close together and not really distinctive to fumble with by feel. This is not a great problem since you pretty much set once and use it. But, if it needs to be adjusted, it takes a some effort to "feel" which is the correct button. All in all, I highly recommend them.

Exceptional wireless headphones

Written By Evangeline, New York, NY on Sunday, May 09, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed wireless headphones and bought the RS180 (a new product) Did not read any reviews or conduct research. I just trusted Crutchfield had a new product and it would be great! I was right! The headphones are exceptional. Sound quality is crisp - filters out any other sound.
I am very pleased with my choice.
I now enjoy watching TV late at night without waking anyone up!

I have the same problem with the third unit. I cannot get sound from the headset. The other two units worked for months before no sound, but this unit after receipt, it would not work. Do other customers have this problem? [ BOBBY J  Apr 20, 2014 ]

  • I have never had a problem with mine and they are about 4-5 months old. They work flawlessly and are the best thing I purchased for everyday TV listening. [ GEORGE   Apr 21, 2014 ]
  • Ours has worked fine, so have no idea. However, the controls are very non-intuitive and non-ergonomic, so I could see how a user could easily make a mistake, as my wife has at times. That seems unlikely in this case. Does seem a shame that company does not consider needs of older users in designing larger, more intuitive controls for an otherwise fine product. [ Rolland   Apr 21, 2014 ]
  • I purchased my first (and only) Sennheiser RS 180 several months ago. Upon setup, I had difficulty following the directions - I think overly complicated. Called the Crutchfield team for assistance. Once I got connected to the right person with some Sennheiser experience, I received the help I needed. Basically, once you turn on the unit and attempt to "pair" transmitter with headset, it takes about 3 seconds to connect. I was impatient and kept button mashing so never got connected. They are very good with one minor inconvenience: you have to push a button on the transmitter. My other units did not require this. [ STEVE   Apr 21, 2014 ]
  • My unit has worked just fine from the beginning and still works, no problem. I'm sorry I can't be of further help. Good luck. [ RICK W   Apr 21, 2014 ]
Whenever I do search for 5.1 and/or 7.1 headphones that i can use for television usage these are always in the search results. the problem is that i can find any documentation stating that these headphones have 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. do these headphones have more than 2 speakers? [ Dae  Apr 19, 2014 ]

  • No they do not have more than 2 speakers (1 per ear). But because they do have an open design for the backing they sound very good (not an in your head type sound). If you want a surround type expereince with these headphones, use the surround processing for headphones from your receiver, if it is available to you. Personaly I wouldn't fret about the amount of speakers or the the surround processing, they just sound great through regular stereo for movies or music. [ MOISES   Apr 23, 2014 ]
  • I wish I could help on your specific question, but I do not know the answer. What I do know is that these headphones have made a remarkable impact on my television viewing and they perform amazingly. I highly recommend them. All the best, Bruce [ BRUCE   Apr 20, 2014 ]
  • I do not know if the system has more than one speaker. But I can say the system is full of flaws. I have returned the unite two times and still have the same problem. No sound from the head set. After returning the unit two times, the third set has no sound. I would look for another system Bobby J. Wade [ BOBBY J   Apr 20, 2014 ]
  • Two speaker only... [ DON   Apr 20, 2014 ]
  • No, there are only two total speakers, one each side. My wife and I love the RS 180's for watching TV. We think the sound is great. They are very comfortable and can be worn for hours at a time. The battery life is amazing. They will last all day. I am one that does not use them with the volume very loud. If you use them you do need to turn the TV volume off because you will get a slight sound delay from the headphones. We only bought one set so I cannot speak for multiple sets with one base. Many people talk about the buttons being too close, but it is really not an issue when you get used to it. We are very pleased and we would highly recommend them. They are fairly expensive but well worth it to us. [ DANNY   Apr 20, 2014 ]
  • Just two speakers-left and right. For true surround mix, you need 5-7 real speakers mixing the audio in the room. [ MICHAEL   Apr 20, 2014 ]
Moving my recording studio to an apartment. No more boom boom in the room, so I need accurate wireless headphone monitoring. I have used Sennheiser wired in the past with acceptable results. Will these headphones add sweetening and compression to the audio to make them sound good? I need to hear exactly what is there in my mix, not what sounds sweet. A few hundred dollars in difference wouldn't matter if it is worth it. Input anyone? [ Trevis W.  Jan 20, 2014 ]

  • I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ON THIS I LIKE BEAT,S PRO BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT A GREAT SET OF CAN,S GET THE GRADO STATEMENT SERIES HEADPHONE,S JUST UNDER A GRAND. (BUT THIS MIGHT BE WORTH THAT GRAND TO YOU) ALSO IF YOU ARE IN THE STUDIO GO DIRECT NOT WIRLESS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. [ ROBERT P   Jan 27, 2014 ]
  • Trevis, I bought the RS180 headset & also the DR180 for my wife and I to use. We are rather hard of hearing and these made all of the difference in the world. No question we hear everything now. Associating the headsets to the transmitter is another story. I am constantly having trouble getting them to associate but in all fairness this could be an age problem, we are up there in years. It all has to do with the multi power switch and the touch it takes to do it right. Sennheiser has a good UTube vidio on how to do it and I am getting better but it is frustrating!! [ ART L   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • I only use my RS-180 with my TV. It provides excellent sound -- INFINITELY better than the TV speakers (Panasonic plasma). I have not used it with my (music) sound system so I can't offer comments for that type of application. [ DANIEL A   Jan 20, 2014 ]
  • in my opinion, these baby's have a raw, true sound. nothing is glossed over. for the money I think they're hard to beat. I like them better than my [wired] Bose. they are also very lightweight and can be worn for a looooonnnnng time. peace out [ DAVID L   Jan 20, 2014 ]
Will I have a latency problem with these if I leave the tv speakers on? [ Ray d  Dec 14, 2013 ]

  • Will the open air design of the RS180 be too loud as to bother people ie: like at a Starbucks etc.? [ Steve K.   Aug 08, 2014 ]
  • no [ evilyn   Dec 16, 2013 ]
  • I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but I use the headphones with the speakers off. Another words, I plug into the front of my Denon Receiver which is where the headphone jack is located. It automatically turns off the sound of the front speakers and produces the sound through the headphones. You can't have both at the same time unless you plug into the back of the receiver output. That didn't work for me. I think the sound is excellent through the headphones, very crisp and clear. I hope this helps. [ RICK W   Dec 16, 2013 ]
  • Ray - I'm not sure I know what a "latency problem" is, but if it means a delay in the sound coming from the earphones as compared to the sound from the TV speaker, the answer is no. There is no delay; the phone sound is in perfect sync with the TV speakers. I do have two problems with my new headphones that you should know about: 1) the ear pieces are very UNcomfortable. They do not sit well over my ears. I will have to modify them to make them comfortable. 2) The controls are awkwardly located on the right ear piece. To adjust anything, it is necessary to remove the headset from my head. Vern [ Vernon   Dec 15, 2013 ]
  • I typically don't have both the speakers and head set on at the same time. Either way the audio seems in sink with the video. I would have to say there is not any noticeable latency. [ CHARLES   Dec 15, 2013 ]
Will this device interfere with the wi-fi network in my home? Netgear. [ gary v  Dec 10, 2013 ]

  • I have purchase this (Sennheiser RS 180) with an extra set of headphones and I have had no interference with my wi-fi network ( which includes 2.5 ghz and 5 Ghz). [ MOISES   Dec 17, 2013 ]
  • We stream Netflix, use two laptops and a wireless printer, and recently acquired a ROKU. The Sennheiser's are used daily, and we've never experienced an interference problem. [ RICHARD L   Dec 11, 2013 ]
  • gary, I have had this model since February and another Sennheiser model for several years. There is absolutely no interference with wi-fi networks. The sound is extremely good on these and there has never been any loss of signal or sound quality, regardless of where I go in the house. [ ROBERT   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • I don't know - I don't have wifi , but I can't imagine that they would. they sound really really good. be aware that they are made in China, not Germany like my old ones. [ DAVID L   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • No [ RALPH   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • I have no problems with them,love them [ RICHARD   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • I haven't noticed any interference with my Wi-Fi. I love the headset--comfortable and the sound is great! [ CRAIG R   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • There is no issues / interference with the WIFI system(Linksys EA4500) or other systems (cell phones, etc.) I use. These are excellent headsets. [ ROGER   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • No.I have this unit in 2 homes with wi-fi network. [ DIANNE   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • No, it won't interfere with your wifi. These are awesome headphones that I highly recommend. The buttons that control volume are a little tricky because they're very close together, but they sound great! [ PAM   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • I have had mine for quite a few months now and it has not interfered with my wi-fi network - you won't be disappointed in this product - it works very well. [ Charles   Dec 10, 2013 ]
  • Not directly, no. It has RCA and mini jack inputs only. [ MICHAEL   Dec 10, 2013 ]
